The Pirates reportedly spent the bulk of the Winter Meetings fielding offers on center fielder Andrew McCutchen, but GM Neal Huntington said at the end of yesterday’s Winter Meetings that it’s now unlikely that McCutchen is moved this winter, as MLB.com’s Adam Berry writes.
“Our intent coming in here was to have Andrew McCutchen in our lineup going forward,” Huntington explained. “No one changed that. It’s unlikely that someone changes that going forward. We’re not going to close the door, but we’re not going to be making calls.”
That’s not a definitive statement that McCutchen will be in Pittsburgh’s Opening Day lineup come April, but it certainly casts further doubt on the possibility of a McCutchen trade. The larger question surrounding the former NL MVP may now focus on where he’ll play in 2017, as there have been multiple suggestions that the Pirates prefer to play Starling Marte in center field while moving McCutchen to a corner slot.
Both the Nationals and Rangers were linked to McCutchen over the past week, with Washington in particular reported to be in heavy pursuit. The Nats, though, shifted course and opted to secure a younger, more controllable piece — and one that enjoyed a markedly better 2016 season — in picking up Adam Eaton from the White Sox. Texas, meanwhile, re-signed Carlos Gomez to a one-year deal (though the team could still fit McCutchen into the lineup, from my vantage point). Huntington acknowledged that he did speak to other teams about McCutchen, but the GM also labeled his asking price as “significant,” Berry writes.
The decision to hang onto McCutchen may well prove to be shrewd. He’s still controlled for another two seasons by way of a $14MM guarantee in 2017 and a $14.75MM club option for the 2018 season. McCutchen’s .256/.336/.430 batting line represented the worst full offensive output of his exceptional career, and he turned in the highest strikeout rate and lowest walk rate he’s posted as a Major Leaguer. Questions about his defensive performance have been chronicled at length. That made it difficult for the Bucs to secure the premium return they sought for the longtime face of the franchise, but a rebound in 2017 could allow the Bucs to land such a return if McCutchen is marketed either next July or next offseason, depending on the team’s performance next year.
Huntington admitted that he listened to offers on multiple players with one and two years of team control remaining, which is an unfortunate but often necessary course of action for small-market clubs like the Pirates. As such, it’s certainly plausible to expect that the Bucs could yet make a deal later this winter, even if McCutchen isn’t the player that is shipped out. Tony Watson’s name came up in rumors this past week, for instance, and others fitting that description on the Pittsburgh roster include Juan Nicasio, John Jaso, Jordy Mercer, Jared Hughes and Antonio Bastardo (as can be seen over at Roster Resource). Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported earlier this week that the Pirates were willing to pay a portion of Bastardo’s $6.25MM guarantee in 2017 in order to facilitate a trade.

If Nationals can still trade for him, I don’t mind giving up prospects (not Robles) for him. He could play LF and put Werth as primary back up at 1B/LF/RF. I know Werth is making tons of money but it is his last season and he has earned his contract already as far as I am concerned.
stryk3istrukuout
Yeah! Let’s trade every prospect in the system!
fs54
might as well if we are dealing.
padreforlife
He’s earned contract? Team can’t get past 1st round
McGlynnandjuice
And that’s his fault, how?
fs54
if you followed the team before he arrived and after, you would know.
I hope we give him a standing ovation his last game at Nats park.
npalley98
Lol if the nats still want cutch they would almost certainly have to add robles.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
If the best offer was the Eaton package, then I’m glad that Huntingdon passed.
Around this time last year, another Pittsburgh superstar athlete was struggling: Sidney Crosby.
A coaching change later, all Crosby has done is be the best player in the world (which he already was but now at an even higher level) win a Stanley Cup, playoff MVP and a World Cup and lead the league in goals this year despite missing a few weeks.
Not saying Cutch will be the MVP level player again, he probably won’t, but you don’t sell low on a guy because of a bad half year.
The Pirates were ALWAYS going to trade Cutch. I knew this years ago. It has nothing to do with him having a down year.
The plan was always going to be to trade him to replenish the system after their many vaunted prospects become big leaguers and Marte and/or Polanco became stars and made Cutch expendable.
The problem is even if they are in contention, the best thing will still be to trade him and the yinzers heads will explode.
metseventually 2
Except McCutchen is liked throughout the league.
arcadia Ldogg
And doesn’t cry.

oh hi 2006, i didn’t know it was you.
ronnsnow
You don’t think the Eaton package would have been good enough of a return for Cutch? Thank you for proving you’re just another Yinzer who knows nothing about baseball. Go have another IC light and one of those overrated French fry coleslaw sandwiches.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Giolito isn’t what he’s billed to be, the Nats came out and admitted it yesterday. Dunning is a low ceiling prospect. Lopez is very good, but not enough for Cutch.
thor would look better in red
giolito is better than anyone else in baseball according to the prospect list. the nationals were stupid to say that bc they could have traded him for more.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
The Nationals know a lot more about him as a player and a person than the people who make the prospect lists.
If it was even 50/50 that he’d be a future ace, they wouldn’t trade him at all, let alone for a slighter better version of Brett Gardner.
justinept
It’s irrelevant what the Nats think of Giolito. The mark of a good GM is to find the team that thinks the world of the guy and is willing to pay a premium price for him. Given that he’s a top-5 prospect in baseball, I don’t think it would’ve been too hard to find that team.
Chromimw
Of course the Nats are going to downplay to their fan base what they gave up because they don’t want their fans flipping out if Walton struggles. That package CHI WS got was insane, and more than worthy for a player of McCutchen’s talents as well.
Chromimw
Eaton*
KermitJagger
If I’m the Bucs I would have been asking for a package of Ross, Lopez, and Glover and maybe another smaller piece. Giolito and Lopez are both fine prospects but I think the Pirates need an established rotation arm for 2017 given how lousy our rotation is today. Why they were so insistent on Robles is beyond me considering how far away he is, unless they were planning on spinning him for someone like Archer.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I wanted Ross and Lopez and a third piece, as well. Joe Ross would have been a perfect trade target. Long term control but he could slide into the rotation right away.
I would have offered Watson with Cutch to see if I could have gotten Robles as the third piece.
The Nats could have Cole Tucker or Connor Joe, if they like.
virginiascopist
IMO, if the Pirates had originally asked for Ross and Lopez when this all started, a deal could have been struck. I don’t think adding Watson wouldn’t have brought back Robles
jpg610
Robles is absolutely the guy that makes most sense. What good does Joe Ross do? The division isn’t winnable and likely won’t be for at least a few years. Like it or not but the best course of action is to get younger and prioritize upside. A high floor solid starter like Ross isn’t what Pittsburgh needs. A guy like Robles who could be a superstar in four years is.
jimmyz
They wanted robles to have an in house replacement for when martes and polancos contracts are close to expiring so they could be flipped for more blue chip prospects.
sngehl01
Anyone who thinks McCutch carries more value than Eaton just isn’t all that sharp.
Eaton 2 years younger
Eaton .284 career BA vs ..292 for cutch.
Eaton .357 career OBP vs .381 for cutch.
Eaton is coming up on the best years of his career. Cutch may have already seen his.
Cutch is signed thru 2017, with a 2018 team option. Eaton is signed thru 2019 with options for ’20 and ’21.
If anything, Eaton should have commanded MORE trade value than Cutch due to age, recent performance, and contract status.
McCutch is an overrated defender, Eaton is great in right, but poor in center.

Did you read what you wrote?

What the heck is a Yinzer? I’m from Texas, my wife is from East Stroudsburg. We speak different languages.
Kershawshank Redemption 2
A yinzer is a slang term for someone who is unabashedly biased toward Pittsburgh and the Pirates, Steelers and Penguins, often to the point that their view of the rest of the world is distorted.
East Stroudsburg is a lovely town.
davengmusic
Thank you. I’ll add that to my other new words: Mummer’s Parade, dippy eggs and scrapple.
CaliWhiteSoxFan
I think Patrick Kane is better than Crosby.
mdbaseball05
Still wouldn’t mind seeing Seattle make a run for him to play LF and hit between Segura and Cano. I don’t know that we have the prospects to do it now after sending guys like Walker, Marte, and Jackson away, but we’d still have guys like O’Neill, Drew Jackson, Peterson, and a few others.
I think the Pirates damaged that relationship with Cutch over the course of the meetings.
ronnsnow
The Pirates damaged their relationship with Cutch when they asked him to bat second. Now it’s damaged even further because they want him to play a corner OF spot. Cutch is a baby and expect him to sulk in 2017
KermitJagger
The Pirates’ relationship with Cutch was strained last offseason when he was vocal that the team needed to add pieces (while they were trading Walker). His struggles further strained things and I think his comments on twitter after the Liriano trade didn’t help. Now they are asking him to switch positions and from Hurdle’s comments earlier this week, it doesn’t sound like he is 100% agreeable with that move. I don’t think the trade scenarios swirling affect much since the Pirates were asking top dollar for Cutch which shows how much they value him.
I think his willingness to move to a corner OF spot is critical for next season and his ongoing relationship with management.
KermitJagger
Everyone on that list is expendable aside from Mercer. His defensive skills have started to slide but we don’t have an obvious replacement until Kevin Newman comes up. Mercer is our ss in 17 and probably splits time with Newman in 18 and then hits free agency. Would be great if he could stick around as a utility guy after that but unlikely.
phillies012tg
I think it’s worth the gamble. Is Mccutchen AND meadows show improvement this season. The the pirates can get more back from Mcutchen at the deadline and call up meadows.
Meadows needs more seasoning in AAA before the commit a full time role to him.
KermitJagger
Could cause a dilemma though, albeit a good one. If Cutch comes back to prior form and the team is competing for the playoffs, you can’t trade him at the deadline. Good dilemma to have as a fan but one that the FO probably doesn’t want to encounter given their penny pinching ways. So the three scenarios are:
1. Trade him now
2. Trade him at the break if the Bucs are out of contention (which may mean he has been struggling)
3. Trade him in the offseason next year knowing that return will be greatly diminished with only one year left.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Polanco Marte Harrison or Polanco Marte Bell are fine outfields if he needs more time.
The Pirates are reportedly intent on keeping Bell at first, which is the right move. Even if he’s better in the OF this year, his future is at 1B.
Between that and the Kang situation, the Pirates really need to keep Harrison.
KermitJagger
Don’t forget about Adam Frazier in the OF too. I wish his defense was better because I really would like to see them spin Harrison to someone like the Dodgers for Kazmir. We’d be OK at 3rd since we have Freese, no matter what happens to Kang.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I think Frazier is going to be the 2B. They like him leading off. Freese at third.
Harrison can go back to super U duty. Backup at 2B, 3B and RF. He seems more focused in that role.

nrd1138
Im guessing there will be a lot of vet players ( with sizable contracts or contracts with only 1 year left on them-or both) hanging around their clubs to start the season, but will likely be traded in the middle of the season with teams in the playoff hunt desperate for a ‘plug in’ piece.
Cuso
What a way to treat the face of the franchise. Cutch is a professional, and will work hard as always and will bounce back.
But the way it was handled sends a message to the Bucs’ younger stars. Unfortunate.
KermitJagger
I think the fact that they held out for maximum return shows how much they value him. And this is how teams outside of the biggest markets have to do business. Cutch has no reason to feel slighted in any way.
TC06
The Pirates are well on their way to becoming the next team to take a hundred or more years to win another World Series. Unless we could trade Nutting! Ha Ha
steelcitybucc0s
Andrewwwwwwwwww mccutchennnnnnnnn
Call me a homer all u want but the team goes as he does
1 sucky year and he goes from ‘one of the best to one of the worst’
People r funny as hell… only time cutch sucked=no playoffs
Is this a sign of a huge decline at age 30? Lmao… naaaaaaaaa
Hope the dude stays and crushes it… hell I hope he even stays in CF and wins a gold glove so every1 shuts up bout it
KermitJagger
I don’t think he can stay in CF when you have one of the best defensive OF in the game in Marte waiting to take over there. Cutch’s CF defense has declined pretty steadily over the last few years. He’s lost a step or two which is also why is SB numbers have dropped. These are things that happen to most speed guys. He can still be an MVP caliber hitter regardless of these things but I don;t think he can stay in CF.
bjupton100
At TL just agreeing, with you . They should have a like. Button. There is no reason to play him in cf when there is a better cf ready to step in. Move him to left to help keep him fresh while giving him days off. It also shows the team what to expect from the team w/out him. In a couple months in it or not he should be traded for the best package regardless of who (cubs, cards, national, or American, best package. Mo
Niekro
One thing you will learn is baseball fans in general are very fickle, Greinke went from being called the next Greg Maddux who will pitch into old age to hes a total bust the first year of his new contract, but when both McCutchen and Greinke have bounce back years everyone will claim they saw it coming. Just take fans opinions with a grain of salt basically.
Mikel Grady
Fowler out cutch in for Cubs?
greg91305
The Bucs MUST trade McCutchen sooner then later. As a small market team you have to move pieces like Cutch to bring in more young talent. Billy Beane and Mark Shapiro will go down as some of the best GM’s of all time because they understood that formula better then most.
riffraff
I think Mets should make a run at him. Lugo,Montero and Bruce for McCutch and Cruz. Mets get cf and BP help for when Familia is suspended. Pirates get stopgap corner OF until Meadows is ready plus 2 young starting arms. Close enough to fair?
greg91305
No thanks. I believe the other New York team could put together a much better package.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Let me qualify this by saying I didn’t pay attention to him in 2016, so I’m going on what I saw in 2015, but I’d want Matz.
Matz and Bruce for Cutch.
jpg610
I’m a Mets fan and can tell you that Huntington would laugh hysterically at that offer before hanging up the phone. Montero looks broken and isn’t the prospect he was a couple of years ago, Lugo was good last year but it was a small sample and he has no pedigree, and Bruce apparently can’t fetch us a half decent reliever. It’ll take much, much more than that. Conforto + stuff.
hojostache
I agree that the original package of Lugo, Montero, and Bruce is very light…though I wouldn’t want to trade what PIT would want for Cutch. He doesn’t profile as a great CF anymore and him in a corner isn’t enough of an upgrade to warrant moving Conforto/Matz+…which is what it’d take unless PIT drastically reduces their expectations.
steelcitybucc0s
Keep him…
Polanco, cutch, marte
Yesssssss sirrrrr
A trade just didn’t work out this offseason… they will be near the phone but it will prob get hung up with nothing to give until trade deadline unless they r overblown with something they can’t refuse
And that has yet to happen and prob won’t bc teams r scared over 1 bad half of a season
Gonna love it… all this gonna burn a fire under his ass and he’s gonna come out crushing it
greg91305
He tried to do to much this year. He didn’t have Walker, Pedro and a healthy Marte hitting around him. When Freese is hitting behind you in the lineup you’ll go out of the zone to make things happen too.
bjupton100
I agree with light a fire under him. They should have traded him Harrison liriano melancon, and a catcher, maybe Diaz or the prospect they traded with liriano. There were several teams we could of pulled off wsox type of deals with, plus saved 50 million to put into extensions international players. It also could of been spent on someone like Chapman who no one wanted, and could of been flipped like the cubs did just for “believing in him”.
BoSoxs4life
There has to be more to the Bucs wanting to move him. I wonder if he is going backwards in his career. Me personally I think he still one of the best at the gm. Bucs will move him during the yr that’s my guess.
markmc1235
I don’t think Cutch is declining quite yet, he just had a bad year last year. It happens to the best players sometimes. He’s only 29 and I believe he was battling injuries last year as well. He’s got a lot of baseball left in him.
bjupton100
Like. Eaton is a stud all of the sudden and has had worst years and more injuries. They waited to long to try to trade him, trying to convince their fans they were going for it instead of date “we know where we are and what we’re doing, that’s why we have jobs doing this. McCutchen will win comeback player of the year instead of jump-starting a retool that would make the central the division of baseball.
jkim319
Agree
padreforlife
If you’re right then Pirates were smart if not they goofed not getting best offer and moving on
norcalblue
Every year in the Fall/Winter there are a few organizations that make the call to go “all in” (Boston, Nats, Stros). These organizations combine with teams (Marlins, Nats this year) that throw stupid money around to appease restless fan bases and/or their filthy rich, arrogant, stupid owners. These two groups of teams overpay for FAs or in trades. The players association, agents, and mainstream media love and encourage all of this free spending lunacy because it drives up salaries and makes for great ratings and readers. Teams like CWS, Pirates, Royals are the other beneficiaries as they can exploit the market and sell off players and replenish talent and organizational depth.
Unfortunately for the Pirates, the Nats saw Eaton as having more value than McCutcheon and overpaid the CWS instead of the Bucs.
For teams that need to rebuild there is never enough stupidity to go around. Hence, AM stays put for now.
mdbaseball05
Did you just say the Nats throw stupid money around? None of what they did this year should make anyone think that. They tried to pry away an Ace in Sale, who is controlled for 3 years for around $38M and did trade for Eaton, who is controlled for 5 years at a max value of $38M. Those are both massively under market value.
If anything, the Nats went cheap by not spending on one of the big closers or big bats. The Marlins throw stupid money around, yes. It doesn’t make any sense for them to throw $80M on a closer when you are 79 win team. Saying the Nats throw stupid money around because of arrogant, stupid owners is just dumb. The Nats are the best team in the NL East and have been for some time. You don’t get there by being stupid.
norcalblue
Stand corrected on putting Nats in the category of stupid money. As of now, they have not done so. If they sign Jansen for anything close to 5 yr/$80 m, given the quality they already have in their pen, I would consider that stupid money. I do consider the deal for AE to be unwise/stupid. They have traded away a considerable amount young talent to get a ballplayer (admittedly a cheap one) that I don’t think provides that much upside for them.
bjupton100
If Adam Eaton gets a lot of value from defense at RF and mainly for ob, running bases, youth, and years of control then Souza should of been worth 75 percent or so of Eaton. They also want him to play cf which I believe he’s been average at, I don’t understand what they are looking at. Can’t wait for Souza to stay healthy, take a few more singles (as opposed to swinging for the fences everytime) we can get a good half season off him and name our price. I didn’t like the trade at the time, (I thought Souza could of been picked up later. Personally I thought they could of found another trade to off-load a couple pieces and found room for Turner and Ross, I thought Tallion could of been gotten for Ross and little more after (if anything more) Ross flew through the minors and KK could of been traded before last year and re-aquired. It’s crazy how a small trade can change a franchise. TB could be a top team this year but I think they will go for it in 2018, with a couple pitchers and b type prospects being all that is traded/lost this season. Curious of others opinion.
bjupton100
Agreed but it isn’t necessarily dumb move to go all in to win the Ws’s. That is the goal. The tigers traded a future Hof player to win it all. The pitcher they got was lights out but they still didn’t win and are still ridiculed even though had they won it would of been worth it.
norcalblue
The decision to pursue Jansen from the Dodger perspective is quite different than the Nats or the Marlins., The Dodger call is complicated by the fact that there are no in-house replacements that appear ready to assume the 9th inning role that has been covered by Jansen for the past 3 years. If the Dodgers had the equivalent of a Seager, Urias, JDL or Bellinger to take over the 9th inning, this would be an easy call. If the Dodgers had an AJ Ramos (Fla) or Blake Treinen/Kelley (Nats), they would be stupid to try and re-signing Jansen at this price. They should be investing these dollars elsewhere (2B,LF). Unfortunately, they do not and the trade market will not yield anything near what they need. If the Dodgers do not resign Jansen, they will will be chasing after bullpen help all season and it could be a real liability for a team that otherwise is positioned to compete again for a WS. The Nats and Marlins, on the other had, really do not need Jansen and if either team spends what it will take to get him…they will be wasting scarce resources.
npalley98
And this relates to cutch how?
1e828d29
That locker room is going to be a wreck this year after something like this lol
Solaris611
Huntington: “Can we all just pretend this never happened? Something like it MIGHT happen at some point, but Andrew McCutchen is TOTALLY our guy – always been and will be going forward……..ish. And that’s relatively official, more or less.”
Solaris611
Cubs should have signed Fowler to the same terms and trade Heyward to STL for future considerations.
1e828d29
Can’t do it. Jason Heyward is the best defensive RF in baseball. Have to have his glove with schwarber in left.
jkim319
Pirates blew it… had ‘real’ buyers for Cutch (the dodgers should still want his RH bat, but now there is no real competition for him and they know it).
Maybe July 31 (value ‘might’ be higher .. a team might be desperate for a RH bat) .. maybe next summer (but by then only 1 year of control left)..
bjupton100
Oddorizzi cedeno, Farquhar, Miller, for McCutchen, Tallion, and Bell. Maybe a couple lower end player/prospects from TB. Close?
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Not even close to close. But, why would the Pirates trade Taillon? They have 6 more years of him and he’s going to be a real good two, maybe a one.
Cole is the guy who will be traded before too long.
BoSoxs4life
Now the package should be Cole, Cutch together then I bet nats would listen as any team would ,
steelcitybucc0s
I’m sure NH didn’t have any intention of trading cutch… unless he got a crazy offer he couldn’t refuse…
And these r professional athletes… they know it’s a business… one they shouldn’t be in if they can’t deal with trade rumors
Either way cutch is going to be poised for a bounceback season… the trade rumors r a good way of NH laying into cutch without going to the media and saying he was bad.. kind of just another way to fire him up
Cleviski
They should trade, for better prospects. They have Meadows in the minors, and should get a new fielder, pitcher, or slugger.
smrtbusnisman04a
I don’t think McCutchen’s best days are behind him. He’s only 29 and he playing through injuries earlier in the year. He hit much better in the second half.
That being said, I don’t blame him for being bothered by the trade rumors. We already knew last year the Pirates would not be able to extend him; a trade at this point seems inevitable.
If the Pirates do move McCutchen, maybe then can move Josh Bell back to the corner outfields (his natural position) and pursue a young first basemen.
