Andrew McCutchen trade rumors have understandably dominated much of the offseason talk in Pittsburgh, though here’s some more buzz on other potential Pirates moves…
- The Pirates are one of several teams who have shown interest in reliever Daniel Hudson, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette tweets. As many as 16 teams have checked in on Hudson, including his former team in Arizona. Hudson posted a 5.22 ERA over 60 1/3 IP with the Diamondbacks last season, though advanced metrics (3.81 FIP, 4.12 xFIP, 3.84 SIERA, 8.65 K/9, 2.64 K/BB rate) hint that the hard-throwing righty had a better season than his ERA would indicate.
- Jorge De La Rosa and Doug Fister have received some “due diligence” check-ins from the Pirates, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports (via Twitter). Nothing appears to be in the works between the team and either pitcher at the moment.
- The Pirates have been very successful at turning reclamation projects into successful arms in recent years, though finding such pitchers is becoming more difficult, GM Neal Huntington tells Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and other reporters. “There doesn’t seem to be as many (pitchers) that we’ve been able to identify,” Huntington said. “The traits we’ve liked in the past, they’ve been more difficult to acquire because teams are paying for them. They recognize we’ve had some ability to return some value on some guys coming off down years or injuries. There is a higher competition level, and supply is down, and as a result cost goes up.” Huntington hinted that the Bucs may have to acquire something other than its preferred target of a ground-ball pitcher in order to land a veteran arm, though the GM said that adding a veteran isn’t a must. “We’d be comfortable adding nobody if it’s just not there,” he said.

Translation: We’d be comfortable just not adding anyone and losing if it doesn’t come at a cheap and price financially.

Do you own a business? Have you ever staked millions into a business? Your ignorance suggests no. EVERY business owner whether it be a sports team or a gas station has a right to control his costs to maximize his return. It’s how you make MONEY! If you don’t like how they do it then stop watching and reading about them.

And as a fan (customer), we have a right to criticize, complain, talk about, use or not use (feedback) a product of the ballclub (company) whether we “understand” the way the “business” is run.

No, most people don’t have millions to invest in a business.. People also have seen this cheap “can’t afford what we want” act from the pirates for a few decades now. Can’t blame people for getting sick of it. Look at the pathetic rotation they tried to pass off as a major league rotation just one year after winning 98 games. Winning isn’t the goal for the Pirates. You get what you put in to it.. Also, what happened to all that financial flexibility Neil Huntington talked about? Where did it go? People shouldn’t blame McCutchen for not being happy in Pittsburgh.. He has very valid reasons for being disgruntled. How many of those MILLIONS did he make the team? For them to dump him after a 1/2 season of “subpar” play. Meanwhile the guy still hit 24 HRs.. They ran Neil Walker out of town as well.. yeah he regressed quickly… to the best season he’s ever had. Mismanaged from the top to the bottom.

pretty much hit the ball out of the park with this comment…..it starts to make Pirate fans insane. 2013-2015 it was about building a core by signing guys to team “friendly” deals, which most are expect maybe Harrison. Now they have one bad year and lets sell off the team. I don’t understand why they ran out Walker and it’s the same thing they are doing to McCutchen, only they “might” get more in return, which they should. Walkers return was pathetic. I don’t care how bad your defense is, people that hit .200 get paid, whats the big deal? Since 2015 offseason, this FO has had issues and I think we all know who it stems from. The man at the top, Bob Nutting! Cheap!

As a lifelong pirates fan I have the right to my opinion! Ownership has made money off the back of us fans even during the losing seasons, we deserve better than that. Nutting has destroyed this team.
TC06
Sports team shouldn’t be run like any other business. Yeah you have to make money but if your team wins you will. Nutting is never going to totally commit to putting together a World Series team. As long as he is the owner the Pirates will have to get lighting in a bottle and hit on every move they make in the same year. This guy frustrates the hell out of Pirates fans!

I agree with pretty much everything you’re saying. I do think they probably traded Walker more because of being injury prone than because of cost. At least, that was always what I was thinking when he played for us. He just couldn’t stay healthy. Back injuries are tough.
Last season for the Mets he only played in 113 games. That, I believe, was his lowest since becoming an everyday player. And he STILL had a career year. Which just ended up making the trade look worse than it already was.
But yes, the trade was very bad. I agree.
ironcity1980
Pirates are in the top 10 in profit every year. Also nutting is a top 5 of wealthiest owner, they get money from other teams through profit sharing they should have to spend twice what they do.
moviemang80
Yup, they’re frugal and greedy. And that’s why many of us Pirates fans are disappointed. We’ve been loyal. And we are sick of it.

McCutchen also struck out 160 plus times

Reclamation project…
so sick of hearing this term that has become so trendy when speaking about Pittsburgh front office moves. As if they are miracle workers.
The reclamation of these pitchers probably had a great deal to do with pitcher friendly PNC park. And a change of scenery that helps a lot of players mentalities if they are unhappy in their current environment.
Also.. I believe our past year’s pitching successes may have had a good deal to do with Jim Benedict, an unsung hero in his own right who we never heard much about, and is now gone to Miami. I just know that when he left, many of our pitchers, bullpen included, started to dip.
But now Huntington is gonna sit there and say it’s because of supply and demand to save some face. Um, no. It’s probably because you don’t actually have your guru anymore, if you ever did have one.
The argument could be made that Nova is an exception to that argument, but I really don’t believe Nova’s end of the year run had anything to do with the Pittsburgh staff discovering the “reclamation” of his talent.
Could be wrong. But it just sounds like a bunch of bull. Makes them feel like they’re doing something right. And tells good story.
righton77
They’re comfortable adding nobody because that’s what they’ve done best lately. That scenario allows for them to say they were “in on” this guy and that guy… but since they “miss out”, they never have to prove that they were doing anything other than calling and saying hi.
And I wholeheartedly agree that when Benedict left.. so did the team’s sorcery over bargain bin pitching. I can’t tell you how tired I am of reading (in nearly every article) about this team’s success in reclaiming pitching talent.. It’s been on a very obvious downward trend since Benedict left.
Nova pitched well here because of switching leagues, as well as pitching in a much less hitter friendly atmosphere. I too doubt it has much to do with master wizard Searage.
Oh and what do you know.. as I type this i read at the top that Jeff Locke is signing with who else… the Marlins.. Good luck Jim. Ray’s wand is broken.

Yup, agreed

It sounds like many of you that post on here listen to the slob Mark Madden. You guys all parrot his lies. Neil walker was not run out of town.
He has terrible back issues and is not worth the ammount of money he gets under the Pirates financial constraints. The trade with the Mets was God awful but our Gm has made many bad trades.
Cutch is at his lowest value. Maybe he will keep going down hill, maybe he won’t but it’s worth seeing what we can get.
Josh Harrison flat out sucks. He is a slap hitting utility man who makes more mental mistakes than Pedro Alverez. He is also a egomaniac.
The Pirates have a great farm system. The Pirates actually draft guys based on talent now, unlike under the worst owner ever who is truly cheap Kevin McClatchy. It made me sick to hear fans give him a standing ovation in 2013. I guess his lifestyle choices get him a pass for running this team into the ground. I would take the nuttings over McClatchy any day of the week.
TC06
So you think ownership is doing everything it can to win? Please!
righton77
Would’ve rather just hung onto Neil, and let him walk,, than have him forced out of town for that terrible return.. Technically he was run out of town.. The FO with their actions, said “here’s what we think of you”, and threw him away like trash, and received hot trash in return. This front office does not like it when a player feels he deserves a raise. Look how they treated Cole. He probably can’t wait to leave. And I know all about the back issues. I think I would still rather have him for 100 games a year than Harrison for 162.
But we are in agreement that the trade sucked, and on a few other things as well. Madden has nothing to do with it. (My comments at least.)
I mean Huntington actually even said something along the lines of “that was the best we could get” in regards to the Walker trade..
So instead of doing what was best for the team (keeping Walker for another season) They tried to “act” like a real MLB team and trade an expiring contract for a need.. and we see what usually happens when the Pirates try to act like a legitimate team.. they half ass it.. They threw in the towel before the season even started. And it looks like Neal may be ready to prepare us for the same this year.
moviemang80
… um no. I’ve never listened to mark madden in my life, actually.
And if you read my earlier comment, I mentioned trading walker was wise because of his lingering back issues, however the return was atrocious.
Additionally, my buddy listens to madden and relayed to me that madden felt like they trade Cutch. I don’t know if that’s true.. but if it is, that entire statement of yours makes no sense…
As a loyal fan of baseball and if the Pirates since I can remember, it has been disappointing more often than not, to see their reluctance to spend. Not overspend, but just spend. Try. Get in the damn game a bit. Be smart about it, sure, but take some calculated risks.
They built a team that could contend, and over the last two years, instead of improving upon it, they’ve been dismantling it with poor decisions. Their pockets are still be lined, and the fans lose. That sucks.

Nutting should sell to someone who actually wants to win. 3 straight years hosting the wildcard game and not a dime invested into the team.
