The latest on the Orioles, courtesy of Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com:
- At last check, Baltimore and free agent outfielder/first baseman Mark Trumbo had agreed to a four-year framework, but the sides remained far apart on the slugger’s worth. Despite that, the Orioles likely have the best offer on the table for Trumbo, according to Kubatko. If they’re unable to re-sign Trumbo, the O’s could bring back free agent designated hitter Pedro Alvarez, but he’ll probably end up elsewhere if Trumbo returns to Baltimore. And contrary to an earlier report, the Orioles are not in on free agent first baseman/DH Chris Carter, per Kubatko.
- While the Rockies could trade one of their outfielders this offseason, they’re unlikely to reach a deal with the Orioles. No matter which Rockie the Orioles have shown interest in, Colorado has consistently pressed for right-hander Kevin Gausman in trade talks. The Orioles aren’t going to move Gausman, though, as he’s arguably their top starter and has four years of club control remaining. Gausman, 25, led all Orioles starters in innings pitched (179 2/3), ERA (3.61) and K/BB ratio (3.7) last season.
- The Orioles are in the lead for free agent catcher Welington Castillo’s services, writes Kubatko. Baltimore is willing to give a two-year deal to Castillo, who has been seeking a three-year pact since the Diamondbacks non-tendered him Dec. 2.
- Moving to the outfield, the O’s haven’t closed the door on re-signing free agent Michael Bourn. The club acquired the fleet-footed Bourn from the Diamondbacks at the end of August, and he then proceeded to hit .283/.358/.435 with two home runs and a pair of steals over 55 plate appearances. Meanwhile, the Orioles haven’t discussed a contract extension with fellow outfielder Hyun Soo Kim, who’s entering the final season of the two-year, $7MM deal he signed as a free agent from Korea last winter. The lefty-swinging Kim accrued 346 PAs – 323 against righties – as a major league rookie in 2016 and held his own with a .302/.382/.420 line.
cplovespie
Let Kim show him everything he’s got, against lefties, in a starting role, at DH whatever and find out if he’s keepers or leavers
A'sfaninUK
Kim went 0-17 vs lefties last year, pairing him with a lefty-mashing OF/DH type should be a big offseason target.
IndianaBob
This is correct. He more than “held his own” vs right handers.
realgone2
So with Davis signed to that ridiculous contract already if then sign Trumbo does that mean Machado is a goner in 2 years? Damn shame.
Brixton
Machado is probably gonna make 400M+, so hes likely a goner either way
donniebaseball
I think you’re over exaggerating with the 400+ million. At 30aav, that’s 12 1/3 years. I could see a deal in the lower 300Ms though
bronxbombers
Stanton got 325 a few years back machado is a better more consistent player and adjusting for inflation for two more years I have no doubt 400 million is very plausible for machado
donniebaseball
Inflation on 2 years does not bump it up to 400, plus the contract the Marlins gave him was well over market value at that time. Very likely he doesn’t get that now. Don’t get me wrong, I think manny will get paid, but I can’t see more than 350 M, and that’s for like 12 years or something crazy. Much more likely he get 275 with opt outs, no trade, etc.
brentupham
Yeah but Stanton’s deal was 13years for $325 which is an AAV of $25mil..
Machado will command $30mil per year.
I could see him getting 9/$300-320mil.or (33-35mil per year)
bootstrap
I agree. Trade Machado and Britton to the Dodgers for Puig, Urias, DeLeon, Verdugo and possibly more. Or swap Puig for Pederson in the deal. All thise players are MLB ready and would be able to contribute and help the O’s compete for years. Dodger like to make a big splash they would love it.
mstrchef13
Machado and Britton would help the Orioles compete for years better than that lot of Dodgers kids.
Doyers23
Ha ha! That would never happen!
xD2V
This is by far the worst trade scenario I’ve ever seen. That wouldn’t even come close to getting Machado. Corey Seager would most definitely have to be included in a possible Machado return.
bronxbombers
Disagree the orioles have never had trouble with offense the problem is pitching and obtaining 2 or 3 young pitchers with high potential would be huge for the orioles
bronxbombers
Plus machado is free agent in two years and we all know he’s not gonna be an oriole
donniebaseball
I don’t think anyone would give up much for puig at this point
bootstrap
Seager at this point has equal value to Machado because of the added team control that wouldn’t work. As an Orioles fan i agree get Seager but it won’t happen, but Pederson, Urias, DeLeon, Verdugo, and additional prospects would be an amazing trade to get for the Orioles. Young talent with many years of team control. O’s are not going to spend what it will take to keep Britton and or Machado because if it doesnt work it will cripple the teams budget.
bootstrap
Yes 2 more years then what?
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Which in no way will ever happen. The dodgers aren’t trading Urias they’ve made that quite clear.
bootstrap
Im sure Machado and or Britton would unlock a lot teams willingness to trade players
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
This is where the trade fails the dodgers have two comps on the FA market that will be extremely cheaper comparative to both Machado and Britton in terms of prospects and money. In the end on the Dodgers side it doesn’t help them. Now not only do they need to find a CF and 2b now they have no pieces to do it with. Now their rotation looks like complete crap. In essence they become the O’s. But hey we got two shiny stars who we gutted our farm for and who will not be retained. I know this is a format to share ideas but let’s be realistic.
bootstrap
The Dodger have have one of the deepest SP rotations in MLB, injured as it may be. I agree its a steep price but Machado and Britton are the best at their positions in MLB and the Dodger have OF depth to trade from. They need and want to win now, and the Cubs are getting better the Dodger like to make a splash, Turner is available but i sure he’s looking for a long-term deal 18 aav, Jensen is going to cost a record deal. Machado and Britton are total about 22mil a year. Both have 2 years of control remaining.
chesteraarthur
Corey Seager is more valuable than machado. You’ve managed to propose a worse trade scenario.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
They’ve made one splash. That was the Gonzo trade to draw fans to the stadium because they needed to. That was also under the Colletti regime. Splashes don’t win you championships unless you a piece away. Sure yes Jansen and Turner are going to be expensive but it’s offset by the young talent they have. The rotation might be deep but deep doesn’t equal quality. Beyond Kersh, Maeda, and Hill it’s all innings eaters with an inability to count on them to eat innings. So no this trade makes no sense except from the O’s perspective. As a Dodgers fan prospect are earmarked for Min or TB as they should be. Their major need is 2b. Gutting the farm for two pieces they can easily reup does not speak to sustainability. Sustainability always being the key word to the FO. It kind of funny but at some point this FO is going to have to spend money to keep their FAs. They are starting to understand that.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
So if you’re suggesting that saving 12M is so imperative. They’d be better served looking to shed 12M in payroll from the Kaz, McCarthy, Puig tandem. Seems more than logical. Not to mention the 45M coming off books next year and 60M in 18.
thetruth 2
Arenado > Machado.
Chapman/Jansen > Britton
WAR says so,
bootstrap
Lol, please look again. Because its not thetruth, You’re wrong on both players. Also according to WAR Tanner Roark’s WAR was higher then Lestor, Syndergaard, Porcello, Hendricks, and Sale. WAR is not always an accurate stat.
Check your stats WAR doesn’t say so.
masnhater
I wonder what it is like for Kubatko and other Orioles reporters to have to report all this non-news. I mean with Angelos as the owner, nothing ever seems to go on, and since he has been the owner, the O’s have arguably the worst farm system in all of baseball. How can you be a reporter and talk about the 1,000,000th best prospect in MLB as someone who might make an impact for the O’s or other teams might want in a trade and still retain your dignity?
realgone2
They have to report about something I guess. Otherwise they’d be unemployed. hahah
stl_cards16 2
Have no idea what you’re talking about? I don’t see where any prospect was mentioned in any of this.
tim815
Worse than the Halos?

Don’t pay any mind to this dolt…and don’t let his handle fool you. It’s Nestor the irrelevant Orioles basher. His 17 watt, part time radio station fails to help spread his obsessive bitterness for the Orioles ownership since they deemed him a joke and pulled his press credentials. Sad to see him use a baseball forum to continue his anti Angel is crusade.

I’ve never even heard of Nestor the loser, but I understand why his press credentials would be pulled based on his lack of knowledge of grammar or structure. Who is this Guy? I’m picturing some fat Virgin broadcasting from his mom’s basement.
P-Rad
He had an AM sports talk station that was good once upon a time…Now, he’s irrelevant. He got into an ego contest with Angelis and lost so now he spends his days “broadcasting” from his spare bedroom. Sad that he offers nothing but one sided criticism despite the team being more than competitive the last 5 years…
steelerbravenation
Doesn’t necessarily mean he is gone. In 2 yrs those contracts will be closer to being over and baseball is making money hand over fist there will be plenty for Machado when the time comes. Whether he wants to stay will be another story entirely.
bootstrap
Does anyone really believe the O’s will give a 300million dollar contract? And why would Machado take a discount deal to stay? O’s will try to win this year and at the trade deadline or next offseason they’ll look to trade Machado and Britton. Both will be traded for MLB or MLB ready players.
mitt24
I believe he will look for a 12 year/ 400M deal. Anything less would be a steal for ball clubs. Yankees are reluctant to give anything longer than a 2 year deal to third basemen so they will be players. I wouldn’t be suprised at all if he signs for life with a 13 year 450M deal. Tack on another year and he would surpass $500M. It’s not worth the risk but the 26-32 age years will make it worth it
arc89
He will not get that type of a deal because those deals do not work out. He will get a deal more in the 7/200 range which will be one of the best deals ever.
bootstrap
Workout or not a team will pay. Jason Heyward got 185 million. Machado will be over 300 million.
ThePriceWasRight
too bad you aren’t an owner. mlb players would flock to you.
no mlb player who isn’t 25 or younger is signing a 12 year deal at a 30+million dollar figure per year. owners saw AROD and are watching Stanton and see a guy can easily go downhill quick. I can’t understand this talk of harper and 400 unless it’s a 15 year deal and then whoever signs him will be done finished compete for maybe 5 years of that contract and then be screwed for the rest.
stymeedone
How the Orioles can be so fascinated by their own FAs is scary. They go out and pick up failures from other organizations (offensively), and then believe that the smaller ballpark is NOT the reason for the uptick. Then they insist on paying them top dollar, instead of letting some other sucker have them. How they cannot see that Chris Carter is this year”s Trumbo is beyond me.
JimBmore
Nelson Cruz wasn’t resigned…and has continued to hit.
pd14athletics
And he had a PED history… I’m not convinced he isn’t juicing again. Having been caught before he deserves that skepticism. The Orioles were in on him as well anyways just didn’t win the sweepstakes
nicklauth
Orioles still interested any in Adam Duvall?
Matt Galvin
Edwin E, to DH would cost money but get the Bat they need?
JimBmore
stymeedone- Nelson Cruz completely eliminates both sides of your comment.
baseball0021
Steve Pearce hit well in Tampa this year after scuffling in Baltimore the year before then got traded back and scuffled again
pd14athletics
Only if you completely throw his PED suspension out the window.
stymeedone
Not really. Yes, he has hit, since signing elsewhere. But they did try to sign him back. Instead, they picked up Trumbo, and he provide what they needed on another relatively cheap contract (If they had waited, he would have been non-tendered and they could have signed him cheaper). They need to keep doing this. Having Cruz or Trumbo at top dollar, after refusing to let Chris Davis walk, would hamstring Baltimore’s payroll even further. These are one dimensional players and there are better places to spend your money.
Solaris611
Harper and Machado hit the free agent market after 2018, and only 3 or 4 teams in MLB will be able to shoulder the burden of the enormous Stantonesque contract each will get. Both WAS
mitt24
I know this is an oriole’s post, but what would you guys think of Rockies signing hammel? Good fit?
pd14athletics
As an A’s fan Hammel to the Rockies sounds like a disaster.
benharvey26
I am really digging the Rockies aggressiveness to become better. I think they have an incredibly talented lineup and with some more pieces and more seasoning, they could be a solid ball club.
Dannydeman
He will name his price. Absolutely going to be coveted by at least a dozen mlb teams. And first Stanton got 325 and he was still still on a rookie deal, he never even hit free agency. The absolute floor for machado is 325 and bidding will take it from there. I’d estimate a 12 year 360 million dollar contract with a 4 year opt out and full no trade.
bootstrap
That not a deal the O’s will offer. Im sure they will expect a “home town discount”. By the way i hate that term because of the Orioles. But he gone in 2 years either way, trade him and get back young MLB talent.
plyons
FYI: Gausman is from Aurora, CO. So, I could see the Rockies having added interest in him. It could take Blackmon and a low-level to get back Gausman.
A'sfaninUK
O’s should grab both Carter and Trumbo, combined with Davis, Machado, Schoop & Jones thats SIX 30-50 homer guys! Earl Weaver would approve!
spartyon
That’s also a lot of Ks and a questionable defense
Richard 3
If Angelos wants to sign Manny to a medium term or lifetime contract, he can. In addition to his MASN money, he has mega bucks from his lifetime in law and his personal fortune. Maybe he will get a man crush for Manny like he had for Davis, and pony up. Just depends how much the team means to him and his legacy.

In my opinion, we already know Manny is gone so next off season trade him before you lose him and get some serious prospects. Yea its gonna suck losing him but we could land some good players instead of just loseing him
Msemetis2228
The Orioles should address other holes and not worry about bringing back Trumbo. Yes, Trumbo had an excellent year but they should use the money to address their holes in the rotation, LF, RF and C. They really don’t need any more power. They should add more speed to the lineup to compliment the power they already have. Why would the Orioles want to sign Carter? He is just another hitter (Chris Davis) who will hit .220 and strikeout 190 times. The Orioles should sign Rajai Davis to at least platoon with Kim in LF. He was a platoon player for Cleveland last year and hit 12 HR and stole 43 bases. I think Castillo would be a great addition behind the plate and the Orioles should try and sign Lind, Saunders, Suzuki, Avila, Davis, or Pagan, to name a few. Tyson Ross would be a nice addition to the rotation as well as Nova. I think Jon Jay and Mitch Moreland were two players Baltimore should have considered. Finally, the Orioles should address the bullpen too. I understand they had the third best bullpen in the MLB in terms of ERA with a 3.40 but if you take out Britton and his 0.54 ERA, the Orioles bullpen isn’t good. The Orioles really need to address these other problems before trying to bring on more of what they already have.
