The Orioles announced today that they’ve claimed outfielder Adam Walker off waivers from the Brewers. Milwaukee claimed Walker off waivers from the Twins two weeks ago but designated him for assignment last week when they claimed right-hander Steve Geltz from the Rays.
The 25-year-old Walker fits a profile that has become somewhat of a trend in Baltimore, as he possesses enormous power but brings little defensive value to the table and strikes out in abundance. The former third-round pick has received 60 and 65 grades for his raw power (on the 20-80 scouting scale), and has homered 58 times across the past two minor league seasons. However, he punched out an incredible 202 times in 531 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this season (38 percent) and whiffed at a 34.8 percent clip at Double-A in 2015. He also lacks any true defensive position, as he’s played left field recently but is projected by most to ultimately function as a first baseman or DH if he ever breaks into the Majors. The addition of the right-handed-hitting Walker gives the Orioles 37 players on their 40-man roster.

The more I read up on Walker the more I want to see him succeed. I can’t really explain why other than he reminds me of those 1980’s all or nothing sluggers like Steve Balboni, Pete Incaviglia, Dave Kingman and Rob Deer. It’s the same reason I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for the Mark Trumbo’s, Chris Carter’s and Mark Reynolds’ of the baseball world.

I thought of Incavliga as soon as you said prior days sluggers. Those guys were legit tough guys though so its not as easy. I don’t think u can get that massive power from just the gym. Guys like Jack Cust or Carter are worth little because they bring very little else. The Sheriff and Davis bring some awesome defense too. I hope he succeeds but that seems like way to high a strikeout clip at that level. He will get owned once major leaguers expose him.

I doubt he ever lands an everyday job as well but his profile just screams throwback and I love it lol

I have come to accept that the Orioles aren’t going after the big names this winter but are moves like this what I should prepare myself for?
zapotter
This is what they do every offseason. Why would this year be any different?
randomness lez
It’s true, the Orioles never seem to win the offseason.

Look for this years Ubaldo or Gallardo and that’s who they’ll sign

Or Nelson Cruz.

While I’m always okay with bringing in more power it seems they are wasting their time with these guys. Davis is locked up for years and Buck likes versatility or experience at DH. I’d rather see them target a zero power high obp lots of steals guy to have quality base runners, speed, and bunt ability on the bench where these 4 A guys will be at if they are lucky. IMO DD should be giving Cincy the Os best real young prospects for Billy Hamilton. I think like 3 out 5 Orioles top prospects were drafted in last two years. Cincy is looking at a few years so it works out perfect. They need really good prospects that will be ready in 2-3 years and that’s all the Os have in prospect quality. Maybe Cory Sedlock, DJ Stewart, and one more lower guy for Hamilton? Sedlock is their #2 prospect behind Sisco.
