By re-signing Yoenis Cespedes, the Mets have already accomplished their primary offseason goal before the Winter Meetings have even begun, Joel Sherman of the New York Post writes. That doesn’t mean, of course, that the Amazins will be sitting back for the rest of the winter, though a team executive tells Sherman that without a long list of needs, the Mets have added flexibility to explore more creative upgrades. Here’s some more from Citi Field…
- In that spirit of creativity, that same Mets executive tells Sherman that the team is open to discussing trades for any of their young players, except for top prospect Amed Rosario. This doesn’t mean the Mets will necessarily shop any minor league or controllable talent, though they’re at least willing to hear what other clubs have to offer. The Mets will even listen to offers about Michael Conforto, if for no other reason than to gauge his value, even if Conforto is considered to be close to untouchable. Dealing Conforto would be another way the Mets could solve their outfield logjam, and Conforto would net a much larger return than either Jay Bruce or Curtis Granderson.
- The Mets’ plan to stick with Travis d’Arnaud as their primary catcher in 2017, and those plans haven’t been changed by other catchers (such as Welington Castillo) coming onto the market, ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin reports. The injury-plagued d’Arnaud was limited to just 75 games last season, and he was reportedly included in trade talks the Mets held with the Brewers last summer involving Jonathan Lucroy.
- In another item from Rubin, the Mets are looking to sign middle relievers to one-year deals, as GM Sandy Alderson has said that the team isn’t looking for closers. If or when Jeurys Familia is suspended, New York already has Addison Reed to step in as the ninth-inning man. If the Mets aren’t willing to commit to more a single year, however, it could limit their list of choices on the open market to second- or even third-tier options.
- The Mets could also turn to internal choices for the bullpen, as Alderson told reporters (including Newsday’s David Lennon) that the club would “definitely” thinking about using Zack Wheeler, Robert Gsellman or Seth Lugo as relievers for the start of the season.

I wouldn’t expect the Mets pitching to be as good as they expect next year. Too many pitchers coming off injury and some like Gesselman and Lugo coming back to earth. I don’t see them in the playoffs next year with the improvement in the NL East.

I agree, but it doesn’t have to be as good as they expect for them to win. They do need offense and bullpen improvements.

the Mets will be contenders ..all teams will have injuries. it will just depend when those injuries happen and the hot streaks in between.

Made me the wildcard without the pitchers healthy this year. Watch out for the Mets

The injuries to Matz and deGrom were fairly routine clean ups, they shouldn’t impact their season at all. Harvey should be ok but you never know. His is a legit concern, but if he’s back, watch out.
Lugo is your classic two pitch reliever, he pitched well as a starter but that power curve is stupid good and if he’s in the pen where he could dumb it down to two pitches he could thrive. Gsellman should be a solid, if unspectacular middle of the rotation guy. He has great natural sink on his fastball and he keeps the ball in the park. His success last year was because his off speed stuff started to come together, it was supposed to be average but looked a little better. That will determine what he is.
Their pitching will be well above average at worst, dominant at best. They are due for some luck in the injury department, if they get it, look out.

Slider, Wheres the improvement in the division ? Miami’s lost Jose Fernandez which is sadder than sad. The Braves got Dickey and Garcia two mediocre pitchers. The phillies have made no significant moves yet ? Their close to signing Joaquin Benoit. The Mets and Nats are the two best teams in the divison in my opinion. My opinion may mean a pot of beans lol But its my take lol I respect your take though i disagree that the mets will not be a playoff team. Time will tell which of us is right. But barring another injury plagued season i see my Mets as contenders.

Catcher is a mess for the Mets, and there isn’t a silver bullet on the FA market.
D’arnaud is 28 this year, and my optimism for his performance is pretty low. And Rivera is not a starting catcher, though I agreed with retaining him.

You may indeed be right about the Mets pitching staff this upcoming season. But i think that Gsellman and Lugo will strenhten the staff and they should be alright. I think the lineup will be better. We have to see what potential Jay Bruce and or Curtis Granderson trades bring in. Atlantas aquisitions of Garcia and Dickey are not impressive to me. Check their stats. I see it as a two team race between the Mets and Nats again.

Sorry this comment was for slider.

They made the playoffs with 3/5 of the starting rotation out and numerous injuries to the lineup including cespedes playing with a bum quad for a lengthy period of time. I think they’ll be ok for the playoffs. I would like to see some quality depth to the bullpen tho.

I wouldn’t count on the wild card winning in the mid 80s again, and their division is getting stronger as we speak with the Braves and Phillies rebuilding.

I am telling you Bruce to Toronto, Reece McGuire & mid level prospect (10-15) to Braves and Vizcaino to Mets
Doc Halladay
I have an incredibly hard time believing the Jays would part with any decent asset to get Bruce. If that’s the route they end up taking, may as well go with the known commodities and re-sign Jose or Saunders. They’ll provide similarly bad defence while having a much higher ceiling with the bat while costing just money.

It’ll be nice to see what Sandy

and Company can do at the Winter Meetings, now that they appear to be in the driver’s seat.
The Mets have some expendable assets
and young controllable pieces all over
the diamond.
They may have another big move
on the horizon.
I’d like to see them
1. Sign Boone Logan
2. Trade for Andrew Miller
3. Call the ChiSox about Jose Abreu
He’s a clear upgrade over Duda.
And a friend of Yoenis.
jleve618
Trade for Miller makes no sense, was critical to Indians PS run and no way they get back what they gave up. With him Indians pitching is solid in every aspect.
jbj54
Your spot on about Andrew Miller jleve.
adshadbolt
Andrew Miller? why would Cleveland trade him? And even if they did the would have to trade conforto, Rosario, and a pitcher like Montero just to get them to not hang up the phone and laugh.
jimmy2times
I keep hearing people talking about Conforto, grandy and gsellman for cutch and as intriguing as that may be for some people I’m not about to give that much especially factoring in Conforto’s ceiling, age and contract benefits. And which mccutchen are you getting? 2015 or 2016? I say stick to the obvious move and get relief help for Bruce. Trading for mccutchen would mean lagares would most definitely go and having someone like gsellman (from what he showed last year) is great insurance for a starting staff who sneezes and pulls their back out.

Not to mention buccos could put Marte in center but what about polanco?
solid71
Please dump D’arnaud, Sandy. Willson Ramos?
Watch out for the Braves. they are out for blood this year.. they snuffed us, the Nationals, and most everyone else that last month. General von Ted Turner is playing war games and building up Der Army for ze attack on the Mets!

Getting rid of Comforto is like repeating the trade of Nolan Ryan all over again…the kids a natural but needs to put his head straight FAST
