DEC. 7: FanRag’s Jon Heyman tweets that the Mariners are more than simply open to the idea of moving Smith and are actually shopping him around. Seattle would like to free up some money to further invest in its rotation, per Heyman, who also reports that Smith nearly went to the Red Sox before Boston agreed to a deal with free agent Mitch Moreland.
DEC. 5: The Mariners are listening to offers on outfielder Seth Smith, reports Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times. Indeed, the M’s have long been willing to consider moving the veteran, who’ll earn $7MM this year after his club option was picked up, according to the report.
Smith, 34, could certainly hold appeal to other organizations. Teams such as the Orioles and Blue Jays have been tied to left-handed-hitting corner outfield bats, and surely would like the idea of taking on a more limited commitment than might be found on the open market.
In all likelihood, rival teams would view Smith much in the same way the Mariners have — as a lefty platoon piece who might see 400+ plate appearances. He slashed .249/.342/.415 with 16 home runs over 438 plate appearances last year. That production fell a bit shy of his work over the prior two years, but is largely in line with his career numbers.
24TheKid
Please trade him, for anything.
gorav114
Please trade him…to anybody but the Orioles. DD loves these players but fortunately 7 mil is to much for the Os
Manny6
Why 24? He’s very solid
24TheKid
He is very solid, but does not fit our team. He’s not very athletic anymore, so all he is is a good bench bat but he’s way to expensive to be just a bench bat.
myaccount
For “anything” is crazy to me. Yes, Seth would be an expensive bench bat, but all indications are that he would continue to be a platoon bat on this roster which is just fine. He’s not an excellent defender but he’s capable and we could do a lot worse. The monetary issue… it’s $7M. Sounds like ownership is willing to raise payroll with or without Smith on the roster, and it’s not your money, so I don’t see why we should be so eager to ship him out.
wazzuhawk
I don’t have an issue if they keep Seth Smith or trade Seth Smith. He is an okay bat versus RH pitching but his baserunning and defense are below average anymore. I can say that for what he provides, I’d rather have the $7M to spend on a starting pitcher.
burger king
What about panda castillo
mack22 2
I don’t get this guy is a stud, at least was when he was on San Diego
Manny6
He still is a stud..those two posters above don’t know what they’re talking about
jdgoat
Probably the low average, which is a dumb reason not to want someone when the obp and slugging is good
Cam
A sub .800 OPS when you’re already shielded as part of a platoon, isn’t “stud” material. Add into that being a rather mediocre defender..and you have a serviceable guy.
But not a stud.
slund24
Not sure if you can call a platoon guy that only bats vs RHP and does so at about a .250 clip a stud. He’s a good player but by no means a stud.
wazzuhawk
Seth Smith is NOT a stud…goodness. He is a solid bat versus RH pitching but is below average in the field and on the bases. In fact, he is so bad in the field and on the bases anymore that he only had a 0.5 WAR last year. He was worth -8 DRS and -1 on the bases. He is clearly in decline but he is useful in the right role, the question is whether he’s worth $7M on a team that clearly needs athleticism/defense in the outfield.
The Oregonian
Why didn’t they keep Aoki if they were planning on dumping Smith? The O’s seem like a good fit for him now.
docmilo5
Because Aoki is even worse than Smith. Aoki doesn’t bring an arm or power to the game and he’s a corner OFer. As a 4th OFer or a CFer his bat would be ok. Unfortunately, he can’t play CF anymore… well. Aoki was terrible to watch last year in Seattle.
What I would like to know is who starting the conversations. Are the M’s shopping him or are other teams asking? If someone is interested, take the first offer.
whereslou
Don’t let the Astros Fans hear you say that. They just signed an All Star according to them. One even said he had 2 video clips from 2015 of him hosing runners at home. I said we will see what you say after watching him half the season.
If we can get anything decent for Smith trade him. I didn’t understand picking up his option in the first place just a bat off the bench not good in the OF. I don’t think it is money I think the roster spot is more valuable find someone that has more value as a bat and in some position.
davbee
I see your two videos of Aoki “hosing” runners at the plate and raise you two videos of Aoki misjudging two 9th inning fly balls in left field that singlehandedly lost an August game to Milwaukee.
Sid Bream
@davbee Really, where are those videos, there’s no link to them. Furthermore, in 5 years of baseball at MLB level he has 9 errors and 31 assists, yet you want to assert he’s a ‘poor outfielder’. He’s also just 14 points off being a .300 hitter in 5 years. Oh yeah, he’s such a poor player. In one game on 21 August 2016, a home run went over the wall in a daytime game with the sun in his eyes. He’s 5’9, what do you expect him to do, leap like Michael Jordan? But do post your ‘videos’ up…His stats prove your claims to be wrong. He’s an above average player that has never hit under .280, and 9 errors and 31 assists in 5 years is hardly poor play…I suppose you’ve never seen Cano make a misplay on an infield fly.
Sid Bream
@docmil05 @whereslou I doubt either of you have ever played baseball. You keep saying Aoki is a poor player. That’s laughable. Try and fault these plays; You guys just don’t know what you’re talking about, that’s a fact.

No, really, ‘he can’t play the outfield’…..Thanks for the laugh though.
Safecosam
he fits in perfectly with our OBP idea but not in the athletic outfield idea. that’s why he doesn’t have a starting job. I would be disappointed if he is gone. he is a solid part of this team
sellers6
Get rid of Smith and put Valencia in his place. Let Vogelbach get 400-500 at bats
sellers6
Besides, we only would use him for the first half of the year in all likelihood since O’Neill should be up by then
wazzuhawk
Valencia is RH and I think they are looking to go with Haniger in RF from that side of the plate and they also have Heredia they could use from that side. I think that Valencia will get some time in LF/RF/3B but will play primarily as a compliment to Vogelbach initially. Hopefully Vogelbach does take the job and run with it.
I wouldn’t expect O’Neill to be more than a September callup. He did very good at AA, especially considering his age, but he still has a very large K rate. Hopefully he forces their hand come July but I don’t think extended time in AAA would be bad by any means.
Benjamin Isaac Davis
I still see value in Smith. He definitely lengthens a lineup and against righties is above average at the plate. While he does have his limits in the OF, I’ve definitely seen a lot worse. I could see Smith bringing in a late inning arm, nothing major, but definitely something to free up some salary for the team. He’s not garbage. Somebody will value him, it just depends on how much. If we roll into the year with Smitty still on the team, I’ll still be happy. He’s a clubhouse guy and is a very good and smart hitter.
O’Neill will have to ball out next year if he wants to make it to the big’s before September call-ups. Ever since Servais and Dipoto started preaching about earning promotions, I’ve felt that the time table for Tyler would be at the earliest, mid July 2018. You just never know in this sport.
sellers6
If he continues hitting like he did last year, I can’t see any way he isn’t up in July or August unless Gamel is tearing it up
Weighed
Adam Eaton could be a target for Seattle. Or that McCutchen fella from Pittsburgh.
Curtis Granderson.
Jay Bruce.
Gerardo Parra.
sellers6
The question is how much would a guy like McCutchen or Bruce cost.
hojostache
For Bruce…solid 7th/8th inning RP or a couple of lotto ticket type prospects. I’d guess the Mets would kick in $$ to get back a better return.
For Cutch…a lot more, though I don’t think he’d be worth it…definitely on the decline.
24TheKid
The pirates were asking for Diaz, O’Neil, Paxton and more for Cutch.
skrockij89
Source? Never heard about those rumors
24TheKid
It was from the Mariners reporter Ryan Divish, you can choose to believe him or not but I will.
mdbaseball05
Cutch would take a lot more than I think we have to offer. Maybe if we still had Walker, but after giving up him and Jackson, I don’t think we have enough. They wanted Giolito and Robles from the Nationals which is two top 10’s.
Dogham
Everyone conveniently forgets Seth’s ability to work an 8-10 pitch AB every time he comes up. His contributions at the plate helped push starters to early exits many times throughout the season. Yes, he is a liability in the field and should be replaced late in ball games, but he fits a need on this ball club with the new “control the zone” mentality. Unless they are looking to move his salary to facilitate another big move i.e. McCutcheon then that makes sense, but those advocating dumping him for “anything” or willing to take next to nothing clearly do not watch baseball like the majority of us.
24TheKid
Where do you get 8-10 pitch at bats? He may have had 1 or 2 of those all year, he may have averaged 4 or 5 pitches an at bat but it all gets washed away when he can’t get a pop up hit to short right field.
whereslou
He did have some ABs that he saw a lot of pitches. And remember this is the guy that would just like him to go away. He has a good eye and will get a few hits and a few clutch hits but not enough. He is awful in the field and is exact opposite of Dipoto says he wants in the OF. I still am confused why we picked up good option unless they thought they could flip him then good for them.
commercecomet7
He is adequate in a lot of ways, but just chews up at-bats. Usually 7-8 pitches per AB , very underrated skill.
Ad-Rock
4.22 pitches per plate appearance, so not quite 7-8. Still, if he qualified for the batting title, he would have been 14th-15th in the league.
itsalwaysrainyinseattle
I think he belongs on a rebuilding team with young players to play the older vet role. They did call him ‘Dad’ this year in the clubhouse
mdbaseball05
I wish the Mariners would actually make some good off-season moves for once and stop going at it 3/4 of the way. If you are going all in, go all in.
I hated the trading away 5 years of one of the best relievers in Smith along with Elias for half a year of Miley. I hated sending away Walker for a mostly unproven Segura when we already had Marte and could have gotten someone like Cozart a lot cheaper. I didn’t like them trading Alex Jackson for pitchers that likely won’t help much this year. I just feel like he is making a lot of bad moves. I feel like we could have gotten better help for Walker than we did.
Dark_Knight
I think he’d be a great fit for the Phillies to take Asche’s roster spot. Platoon him with Altherr. Adds much needed left handed power behind Franco
oldyank55
Hey Cashman Seth Smith looks like a better fit than Aaron Hicks. Admit to yet another mistake, and move on.
sellers6
This might be a crazy idea but I want the Mariners to trade Smith to free up salary space and get a decent prospect. Then trade that prospect and Daniel Vogelbach and maybe one more if necessary to the Red Sox for Steven Wright. Then sign Edwin Encarnacion to play first and put Valencia in the outfield.
24TheKid
I’ve been trying to say that but it just doesn’t seem likely but I’d love for that to happen.
