Here’s the latest from Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe:
- The Red Sox are in reasonable position to welcome David Ortiz back to the fold if he chooses to delay retirement. Cafardo points out that there could be many factors getting in the way of an Ortiz return, like the fact that Ortiz retired in the first place, or that his return would have luxury tax ramifications for the club. But the team has avoided substantial commitments to players who might get in his way, and even Mitch Moreland, recently added on a one-year deal, might be more of a replacement for Travis Shaw’s work at first base than Ortiz’s at DH. And Ortiz, of course, recently penned a provocative Instgram post expressing excitement at the Red Sox’ acquisition of Chris Sale.
- The Red Sox would prefer to trade Clay Buchholz, but they would generate more interest from other teams if they were to make Drew Pomeranz available instead, Cafardo writes. Buchholz is set to make $13.5MM next year, while Pomeranz will make about $4.7MM, as MLBTR projected. (I’d add that Pomeranz is also controllable through 2018, while Buchholz is not.) The medicals on both pitchers “probably aren’t that great,” a rival executive says. Buchholz missed time in 2015 with an elbow injury, and Pomeranz had a forearm issue last year.
- It doesn’t sound like Jonathan Papelbon will pick a new team anytime soon. According to his agent, Seth Levinson, Papelbon is dealing with a family matter, and wants to be dedicated to that issue until it’s resolved. “We hope that people can respect his privacy during this time,” Levinson says.
- The Diamondbacks recently added retired righty Dan Haren as a “pitching strategist,” but D’backs manager Torey Lovullo says not to expect Haren to be in the public eye. “I think he’s going to be somebody behind the scenes, and that’s by his choice,” Lovullo says. “He wants to just remain behind the scenes and help our pitchers be successful. I think he has an attachment to Arizona. … So I think there’s a good starting point for him to come in and come up with a game plan as to how to reach some of these guys and how to help them as quickly as possible.”
- Rival front offices have been careful in making trades with Padres GM A.J. Preller, who recently served a 30-day suspension over a failure to disclose medical information. “I think it’s just human nature to keep your eyes open when dealing with him at least for a while,” says one executive.

Ortiz is NOT coming out of retirement
Pedro Cerrano's Voodoo
If, mind you I realize that’s a monumental if, he were to try it I could see maybe a September return to warm up for postseason heroics. Or maybe I hope.
Txlonghorn1
If Ortiz comes back then the Red Sox are insanely good.

Preller fired in 3…2…1
realgone2
I’m thinking if he hasn’t been canned by now. Then it isn’t going to happen any time soon
mrpadre19
Preller isn’t going anywhere.
Or maybe you haven’t been paying attention to how he’s rebuilt the Farm in a year and a half?
Once the International kids hit the US the Padres Farm will be top 3 if not #1.
By his time next year.
Yes…. the swing for the fence didn’t work…. but hey,as a Padre fan I appreciated the effort.
bradthebluefish
And this is exactly why Preller went big at first. He wanted to see if the Padres could make a push for the playoffs. And if they don’t make it, their efforts would be appreciated regardless.
rivera42
Once the international kids hit the US, the Pads will be top 3? Oh please. Stop spreading lies, dude. There are far too good of farms(White Sox, Yankees, Braves, etc.) for the “international kids” to push the Pads in the top 3.
theo2016
They got a lot of interesting kids but only a few will even be stateside next year, less succeeding. not to mention succeeding is short season or a ball for most of them.
Martin H.
Well the White Sox just have like 8 prospects that are good, while the Pads have some interesting DEPTH (a ton of depth) – I think that’s why they were regarded as a top 3 farm. It may change now. I think in a couple of years, the Pads have the most potential. Just my opinion
rivera42
Yes, the White Sox have like 8 prospects that are good. No wait, those prospects are actually some of the best in the game, including arguably the best in Moncada. But hey, they’ve also got this guy called Giolito, and Lopez, and Kopech, and Fulmer, etc. You get the idea. And if you want to talk about depth, no one is touching the Yanks’ system when it comes to depth. The Pads haven’t been regarded as a top three farm. Where in the world did you hear this?
Martin H.
Never said that the Yanks didn’t have depth. I would personally have them in my top 3 farm. Just seems like top farms are ranked by depth. But maybe those 5 prospects you mentioned can make them a top 3 farm, who knows. They are ranked super-high.
Ohh and I think I saw Pads at #3 (I think) in Keith Law’s farm. That’s why I mentioned the depth part – kinda looks like Keith cares more about depth than the amount of “Top Prospects” one has. I would too, personally. ATL at 1, and BOS at 2 in the midseason update. But the list obviously needs an update. Just saying this because you asked. I would still have the Pads up there in top 5 tho.
Martin H.
Changing my mind, maybe I’ll have the Pads at like 7? Hard to get used to the new trades
MB923
I doubt Boston gets to #2 in the prospect rankings mid season. At this point, they’re probably in the 10-15 range after all these trades. I also don’t see Atlanta passing Milwaukee for #1. But hey ya never know, hence why I just said I doubt it as opposed to saying that definitely will not happen.
chesteraarthur
Please explain to me how the padres international kids will bump their farm system up that much.

Preller isn’t getting fired. The Padres are bad and are going to be bad for at least next couple of years, why does it matter if he can’t trade with anyone right now? The Padres don’t even have anyone to trade. The names that are being speculated like Solarte, Jankowski, etc. don’t need to be traded, they are just the only ones of interest but no need to be dealt. So what’s the problem?
Preller was able to net a top 20 prospect for Norris who was absolutely horrible last year, so even though other teams are “being careful” dealing with Preller, they still will. Like Jed Hoyer said on an interview on XX 1090 in San Diego a few months ago, there are only a handful of teams in this league and to elimate one if you are interested in one of it’s players is foolish. The league has a hawk-eye on the Padres & the way they are operating now more than ever, so if anything it would be smart to deal with them now because you know that the carfax report on the players you are receiving will be very thorough.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Preller can deal with whoever he wants. If he has something that other teams like they aren’t going to not make the trade just because it’s Preller.
filbert10 2
I don’t give Preller any credit for how he handled Norris. Preller could have traded Norris (and Ross, for that matter) for something of real value a year ago. Instead Norris nets a very borderline prospect, by selling low. He’s made some solid moves, but blew a lot more.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
If he was getting fired it would have happened already
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Preller’s job is safe, as they’re going to make sure he leads the rebuild all the way through. To fire him during the middle of it would not be the smartest move.
YourDaddy
The Padres ownership fired Preller’s boss and gave Preller more control over baseball operations. I don’t think he is going anywhere until after his contract is up. If the rebuild doesn’t work he may not be renewed, but his job is very safe at this point.
chuckymorris
Maybe Ortiz could just play home games if he comes out of retirement. (I don’t think he will) but he would be a lot more rested if he doesn’t play games on the road, especially those west coast trips. Hanley and Moreland could platoon at DH at home. Moreland plays first and Hanley DH’s on road

Fake news fueling Ortiz comeback rumors
A'sfaninUK
David Ortiz’s personal instagram account that only he posts on, is not an example of fake news.
Nice to be vigilant about it though.
Connorsoxfan
It’s a joke bud.
dudefella
I’ll lose any respect I have for Ortiz if he plays again. The whole idea of a “farewell tour” and constantly being honored wherever you go is ridiculous to begin with but to come out of retirement after that year long ego trip would be pathetic.
jaysfan77
I agree.
realgone2
Agree 100%
natsgm
Not his fault they did that though is it?
gronk
I’ll start by saying I’m a die hard Boston fan, but not a delusional one. Papi’s not coming back. But let’s talk fantasy. If he did we can’t knock him for that so called retirement tour. He didn’t put it together. He just said thank you very much and posed for some pictures. That’s just my opinion.
JT19
Didn’t Ortiz say he didn’t really want a retirement tour? Like Jeter and Mariano Rivera got gifts from every team they played. Didn’t Ortiz only get one from the Sox (obviously), and the Twins/Mariners since he came up with them?
MB923
No. Ortiz got gifts from every team as well.
bravesfan1998
His legs are in too bad of shape Ortiz is done
okaybluejays
I’d like to see the Jays pick up Buchholz if the price is right. He loves pitching in Toronto as a visitor and it would allow Liriano to be a spot starter or pen option. Seems like a good fit.
jaysfan77
Absolutely no way.
okaybluejays
I get the resistance. And I don’t want the Boston version of Buchholz. I want the guy who prior to his last start in Toronto was 11-3 lifetime with a 2.18 ERA at the dome. He’s a different pitcher in Toronto, for whatever reason. If they can pick him up inexpensively then I wouldn’t be against it.
TennVol
You rarely see trades happen with a division. No one wants to see a player they just traded, who spent 10 years in your organization, suddenly turn it on and dominate. Just isn’t going to happen.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Teams should be careful when they make trades no matter who they are dealing with. If anything trading with Preller is probably safer than trading with anyone else because he knows MLB is keeping tabs on him. The Red Sox (the team that filed the complaint that got Preller suspended) tried to trade him for relief pitching even after the Pomeranz trade (the trade they were mad about) and he was able to trade Derek Norris already. Preller will not be hindered from making any deals in the future because of this, nor will he have to overpay in every trade because of this.
mike156
Oh, bring the the man back, and let baseball fans across the country have a second chance to just drink up his wonderfulness. He’s a team oriented guy, so would likely be willing to take a modest salary to increase the Red Sox flexibility–possibly even the MLB minimum if asked. If there are concerns about deferring Hall of Fame eligibility, I’m sure an exception can be made….gives them more time to build a separate wing for him. I’m feeling like Les Mis….Bring Him Home, Bring Him Home.
jaysfan77
Cafardo’s columns irk me so bad I can’t wait to read them.
TheGreatTwigog
This Ortiz thing is dumb. There’s joc chance he comes back, and the only reason people are really talking about it is because Ortiz made a joke on instagram. I don’t know if people get the joke or not, but either way it’s a crazy idea and will never happen.
TheGreatTwigog
“No”, not joc, autocorrect
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Pomeranz is cheap and controllable, you say?
“Mr. Dombrowski, Neal Huntingdon is on line one.”
That would actually be a pretty good fit. He could slot in behind Cole and Taillon. And if Searage really fixes him, they actually get him for two years instead of the month or two the Pirates usually get out of the deal.
chuckymorris
Yes please. Pomeranz does not belong in the AL east. I was angry about the Red Sox giving up their top pitching prospect (Espinoza) for him. I knew he wouldn’t succeed with the Red Sox. He’s made for the NL
gronk
I say give Pomeranz till the trade deadline. Im still hoping like hell we didn’t throw away A. Espinoza.
angelsinthetroutfield
I wonder if the LAA/SD 2B rumors were hung up on the reliability of medicals. Spangenberg has an injury history so maybe Eppler was scared off by having to trust Preller.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Not a chance. Preller knows MLB is keeping tabs on him so he will be sharing reliable medical records from now on. And you don’t have to see Spangenberg’s full medical records to know that has been injured almost every year. If the Angels don’t want to trade for Spangenberg because of his injury history that is fine but they have all the information they need on him.
Anyway, it’s not like the Angels have anything worth trading.
flipper3333
Anyway, it’s not like the Angels have anything worth trading.–OUCh
DeadliestCatch
The angels barely have enough for solarte and as other teams have better offers and schimpf and spangenberg have their own issues. Spangenberg comes with injury history- if the angels dont wanna take a risk thats on them.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
I don’t think it’s a question of the Padres medical records, since like Ryan was saying, they are probably taking extra care to not let that stuff happen again. It’s more likely because of the fact that Spangenberg’s hamstrings come apart easier than the cotton candy they serve down at the ballpark.
BaseballisLife
The Angels really don’t have any prospects that would be a fit for the Padres. It was the Padres that said no in this case.
start_wearing_purple
The Ortiz thing was a joke that some people have decided to take seriously. One big reason why he won’t and shouldn’t come back is it would be an insult to 29 other teams. He got a retirement tour. Returning would make him seem like he’s a celebrity milking it.
One final reason why he shouldn’t return, he left having a great season. It make it a great exclamation mark on his claim for HOF status.
SDFriars
Boston and it’s executives are still hung up on something that happen over 6 months ago. They keep using Carfardo to post these pieces to try and put pressure on SD owners to fire Preller. Execpt, its obvious Preller is here to stay. Get over it Dumbrowski! These hit pieces are destroying Carfardos reputation. Might as well be paid by the Red Sox.
bosox117
You’d think that a farm system that produced 7 of the 9 offensive positions on a team would rate the best in the majors. I know that they’ve traded the absolute top of their farm system but seriously at what point does track record factor into prospect rating…the top end executives have changed but the scouts and coaches are the same. Not to mention the 2 other positions are the best prospects in the minors.
Outfield: Benintendi ( favorite for 2017 AL ROY), Bradley ( 2016 All-Star), Betts ( AL MVP runner-up)
Infield: Panda ( hopeful comeback player), Bogaerts ( 2016 All-Star), Pedroia (if healthy solid All- Star level producer…lately a big if), Hanley ( drafted/developed by the Sox)
Never mind Vasquez and Swihart at catcher and Travis at first and Devers at third.
Isn’t there a confidence factor for the Sox to reload in the 3 years (minimum) they have of contention? Granted they SUCK at developing pitching, but aren’t they the best at developing position players short of the new Cubs? Don’t forget Riddick and Rizzo. The Sox can develop hitters…
While I wish we held on to Kopech, I can only hope the new focus is on developing pitching…

A little off topic here but can someone tell me what happened to Delmon Young
