The deadline to tender 2017 contracts to players is tonight at 8pm ET. We’ll keep track of the day’s non-tenders in the National League in this post (all referenced arbitration projections courtesy of MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz)…
- Departing the Rockies’ 40-man are righty Matt Carasiti and infielder/outfielder Stephen Cardullo, the club announced. Neither was eligible for arbitration.
- The Braves non-tendered righty Chris Withrow, David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweets.
- The Pirates non-tendered lefty Jeff Locke, as had been increasingly expected, as Stephen Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette tweets. Catcher Eric Fryer was also dropped; he was not eligible for arbitration.
- The Cubs non-tendered four pre-arb players to clear 40-man space, MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat tweets. Lefty Gerardo Concepcion and righties Zac Rosscup, Conor Mullee, and Christian Villanueva were all taken off the roster.
- Righty Louis Coleman was not tendered a contract by the Dodgers, per a team announcement.
- The Reds have non-tendered three players, as C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer tweets. Catcher Ramon Cabrera, righty Keyvius Sampson, and outfielder Gabriel Guerrero were all dropped from the roster.
- As expected, outfielder Ben Revere has been non-tendered by the Nationals. (The non-tender was first reported by the TalkNats blog on Twitter.) The club’s other eligible players — including shortstop Danny Espinosa — have been offered contracts. Revere projected to earn $6.3MM despite an abysmal 2016 campaign, his first in D.C. The 28-year-old still offers speed and defense, but will need to improve quite a bit upon his .217/.260/.300 slash. He has been a near-average bat in prior years, so there’s reason for some optimism, but at that rate it proved too costly.
- The Cardinals have cut ties with righty Seth Maness rather than tendering him a contract, MLB.com’s Jenifer Langosch tweets. St. Louis has tendered all its remaining players with arb eligibility. While Maness, 28, has been a steady pen presence for the Cards, he underwent surgery on his UCL in mid-August. He did manage to avoid a full ligament replacement, and comes with another year of control, but evidently the price was too high for the Cards to roll the dice. Maness had projected to receive a $1.6MM salary and would have commanded at least that again in 2018.

The Cardinals can lose Maness and still not miss a beat. Watch the Cubs sign him. They seem to love to sign ex-Cardinals
jdgoat
Maness will likely sign next offseason anyways
kaido24
He served us well in St. Louis while he was here.

Hoping the Cubs learned their lesson with Motte lol
PixelMelonz
Motte was decent just had control issues
KB R.
That’s like saying a guy was a decent hitter….. he just had contact issues.
thebare
Only tithe few good ones you know the Cub way lol
cardsfan1
Don’t believe that Maness had TJ
STLCards33
Yes he did
STLCards33
Him and zach duke both underwent tommy John
cardsfan1
Duke did, yes. Maness wasn’t TJ. Matheny had said he could be back by next spring
Outlaws12
Madness was originally scheduled for Tommy John surgery but they decided to just repair the UCL instead . He could be back by spring training actually depending on how he heals and his work ethic to get back on the field with his rehab.
frontdeskmike
It’s a conspiracy.
markmc1235
I heard he was abducted.
MacK Korris
Maness actually only had UCL-repairment surgery, not Tommy John surgery as originally scheduled. His timeline of return, as of last time I looked, was early next season.
cardsfan1
Meaning he won’t be out all of next season. Just had ucl repaired not replaced I believe

Ben Revere makes perfect sense for the Mets bench. The need speed and would be the perfect pinch runner for Conforto, the catchers and Duda.
cheftay
Revere IMO makes more sense for the Jays.
Larry David's Joe Pepitone Jersey
Revere doesn’t do anything that Nimmo can’t
metseventually 2
Revere is a MUCH better runner than Nimmo.
cardfan2011
Well that was unexpected (kidding)
dwilson10
I really want the O’s to go after Revere. He would fit them great and wouldn’t cost much for a 1 or 2 year contract.
Phillies2017
Why did they even waste $20k on Guerrero?
datrain021
Didn’t make any sense to me either. Why not DFA him and try to outright?
skipstephens
Revere to the Cardinals for a chance to start.
Backatitagain
Ramon Cabrera, Switch hitting catcher from Cincinnati was non-tendered, MLB in parts of two years. Above average hitter and receiver with one year service. Would be back option for Braves. 0.658 career vs. lefties.

So, my understanding is that all non-tendered players become free agents automatically. Does anyone know if this applies to players who do not have enough service time to decline free agency if waived?
wrigleyterror37 2
Zac Rosscup is a LHP. he should be a good bounce back candidate he pitched alright for Chicago in 2015.
since the players for the cubs are pre-arb does that mean the cubs still control them? Or does this mean they are free agents?
guinnesspelican
There was a stretch of time when nobody could hit the ball in the air against Maness. That comes in handy when a defense behind him can field those ground balls.
petersdylan36
Can someone explain to me the difference between non tendering someone and DFA?
davidcoonce74
DFA means a team has ten days to trade, release or outright the player to the minors. A player not offered a contract immediately becomes a free agent.
GareBear
DFA gives the team 10 days to decide what they want to do with a player on the 40 man roster. In those 10 days they can trade him, release him, or expose him to outright waivers. Non tendering is essentially when a team has a controllable player that is without a contract for the following season. The non rendering deadline is when a team has to offer them a contract. Otherwise those players become unrestricted free agent.
rayray14
Didn’t the Reds just pick up Guerrero a few days ago? Now there releasing him or is that a 40 man roster move and he’ll clear waivers?
KB R.
So I guess the Cubs will be signing at least one free agent left handed reliever then. I was thinking they might give Zastryzny and Concepcion a shot at the job(s). Oh well. With Rzepczynski signing for $11M over 2 years though, I don’t know if I’d be overly anxious to spend that kind of money on mediocre at best LHRPs. $5.5M per season for Rzepczynski who has averaged less than 50 IP/season over his 8 year career, has a 3.80 career ERA, and a career 1.40 WHIP. THAT translates to $5.5M???? Really? Man, the Cardinals really fu**ed the market up by giving an even worse LHRP in Cecil an even more retarded contract. Cecil averages 51 IP over the last 4 seasons as a full time reliever. Has a career ERA of 4.20 and WHIP of 1.34. THAT’S “worth” $7.625M/season over 4 years???? Really? The Cardinals made Cecil…… CECIL the 8th highest paid reliever in the game. Pathetic. He’ll drop a few spots once Jansen, Chapman, and Melancon sign, but still. He’ll be a fringe top 10 reliever in terms of $$$$ being spent on him.
It’s actually a catch 22 for me. 1) it is great seeing the rival Cardinals blow money on crap players like Leake and now Cecil. But it also sucks because they’re screwing with the market prices of pitchers. I think the first dilemma for me outweighs the second. It’s always a good day to see the Cardinals desperate and grasping for straws.

The Tigers should take a look at Revere. Cheap, left handed CF with speed. At the very least, he could platoon with JaCoby Jones out there
