The Mets have “some interest” in Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez, according to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag. Martinez would reportedly be viewed as a “fall-back option” in the event that New York isn’t able to bring back free agent Yoenis Cespedes.
Martinez, 29, could be on the block as Detroit seeks to streamline its roster. Though he’s young and carries an outstanding recent track record of offensive production, he’s also entering his final season of team control. The Tigers say they aren’t interested in pursuing a new contract, possibly making Martinez a nice trade chip.
Certainly, it’s far from clear that the Mets will be willing to meet what’s likely to be a fairly lofty asking price for Martinez — assuming, of course, that Cespedes lands elsewhere (which is no sure thing). Though the organization would surely like the idea of avoiding a lengthy entanglement while maintaining the same kind of middle-of-the-order threat, it has already dealt away several important pieces of the farm for short-term gains in recent years. (That includes, of course, the swap that originally brought Cespedes to New York, which came at the cost of talented righty Michael Fulmer.)
What’s most interesting about the report, perhaps, is that it reinforces the idea that New York will look hard for a right-handed-hitting power bat in the outfield even if Cespedes does not return. That was far from clear last summer, when the Mets traded for the left-handed-hitting Jay Bruce, who joins Curtis Granderson and Michael Conforto as southpaw-swinging corner outfield options. While Juan Lagares remains on hand as a righty bat who can play center, it seems the organization sees it as a rather high priority to add some pop from that side of the plate.
To be sure, that’s not exactly a new concept: the Mets have been linked previously to players such as Jose Bautista as theoretical back-up plans to Cespedes. Heyman also notes that there are other theoretical trade candidates who could hold appeal, including Ryan Braun and Andrew McCutchen. The seriousness of the pursuit of a Cespedes alternative could be a critical component of the offseason for GM Sandy Alderson, who could also look to deal one of the lefties (Bruce, in particular, has been tied to trade chatter) to clear roster and payroll space.

Could trade a starter for him
afenton530
Ryan Braun is best fit imo. They can take his contract, and could trade conforto whoever tf is in their farm for him
thunder12k
I wouldn’t move Conforto for Braun. Would probably cost Dom Smith + another top 10 prospect, which I’d be fine with.
cxcx
Mets don’t really add deals like Braun’s very often. Really only Wright in recent memory right.. Plus Conforto is well like to produce more than Braun over their current runs of control, at like a third the cost or less.
jakec77
What would McCutchen cost coming off the year he had? If it doesn’t decimate the future, he’d be a potentially solid replacement for Cespedes, especially since he still can play CF.
Dmalsch22
I like the cutch idea but I’m guessing it’s still going to take quite a bit to get him. Pirates don’t need to trade him so they won’t unless they get exactly what they want in return
AddisonStreet
Except, he can’t really play CF anymore. He was absolutely atrocious on D last year.
joew
Part of that can be attributed to the team making changes on how they had their out field lined up. One thing the pirates out field has is a lot of speed they changed the depth at which the OF played and it back fired.
Just by eye balling it (watching the games) it looked like Cutch and the OF did better later in the season after they tweaked and mostly reverted back to previous years.plans.
Cutch still has some deficiencies in center but that will probably be where he will stay if he stays in Pittsburgh.. if the pirates didn’t’ have Marte and Polanco at the corners he would probably move to right.
Given that Cutch was starting to rebound as the season went on and still had decent power.. i’d expect his cost to still be very high.. maybe not what it was after an MVP season but still up there… one down season and only 2 years of a cheap contract with a reasonable buy out on the second year gives whoever has him an out. makes it easier to take if i’m wrong and he completely falls apart.

Forget Braun.. Too problematic and costly…I see the Cheapons and Sandy going for some up-and-comer (i.e. Pre-Arbitration and did I mention ‘cost-effective)) like Colin Cowgill (is he still in the bigs?). MoneyBall reigns supreme!!!

You don’t have much to contribute here, do you?
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
A lot more than you. What have you contributed lately, Donald?
thunder12k
Do you get tired of posting the same comments everything there is a report on the Mets?

Yeah, this guy is so super cool.

$5000 says Braun will not end up a Met.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
His no No trade list says he will not end up as a Met.

What could the return for JD be? Perhaps an outfielder like Lagares or Nimmo?
hojostache
They’d want a lot more than that. I’m not saying it’d be a good trade, as I hate most rentals….but they’d want a solid arm or two top-end prospects. No thank you. Ces is still the play.
vvadnala
Maybe Gsellman as one of those arms?
Sokane
They’d want a near ready outfield prospect plus another prospect is my guess
vvadnala
Sounds reasonable. These two teams did match up for Cespedes so there’s some familiarity and recency there
Sokane
I’m not opposed as a tigers fan. I really like JD, but reality is that the Tigers can’t likely afford him with Upton, Cabrera, and JV eating up so much payroll.
So, Detroit needs to retool(not rebuild). It’s fine to carry 2-3 big contracts… but can’t do more than that.
Not sure what NYM farm looks like, but detroits needs are CF, RF(if JD is moved), backup/platoon C, and some pen help.
I’m sure there’s a match somewhere
vvadnala
Yeah. That’s why I pointed out Brandon Nimmo as an option.
hojostache
Gsellman + Nimmo for JD would be interesting. It’s selling high on Gsellman, but DET did pretty well with the last pitcher the Mets gave them….
Nimmo is still a work in progress. Pretty good contact hitter, though it’s unclear if he is a 4th OF or if he can play himself into a starting role at some point. The Mets OF is full, so he probably won’t get a ton of chances this year anyway.
RedFeather
How are the St. Louis Cardinals not kicking the tires on J.D.? Seem like a great fit.
Dmalsch22
I don’t think they want to give up what it’s going to take to get him. The tigers are going to ask for more than he’s worth and who wouldn’t, they dont seem like a team who would give up a significant piece for a rental who isn’t a great outfielder
gofish 2
Too bad the Mets traded Dilson Herrera at the deadline. He could have been included, then Tigers put him at 2B and unload Kinsler.
beto
Now that they have Cespedes, JD is going to LA of SF
vvadnala
Not that it matters anymore, but apparently the Tigers asked for Michael Conforto in return for JD Martinez. The Mets had no intention of moving him
