At least three other organizations are currently showing interest in wooing outfielder Yoenis Cespedes away from the Mets, per Mike Puma of the New York Post (via Twitter). With four suitors (including New York) presently in the hunt, Cespedes’s representatives believe he could reach a deal by early December.
That would represent a much quicker end to the open-market experience than Cespedes experienced last year, when he did not re-sign with the Mets until late January. But this time around, he’s the consensus top-available free agent with lesser competition and another superstar campaign under his belt. While there aren’t a lot of teams that make for perfect fits, the expectation remains that Cespedes will draw some concerted bidding that drives his price north of $100MM.
The Mets have made no secret of the fact that they are interested in a reunion with a player who had a huge role in generating two consecutive postseason appearances. It remains to be seen whether New York will be willing to go to a length and total value that it prefers not to in order to bring him back, but it’s also possible that the price tag won’t go out of the team’s comfort zone.
In an appearance on 710 WOR (audio link), GM Sandy Alderson suggested that it’s all still very much up in the air how things will turn out with Cespedes. The club is “in one sense in a better position” than it was last winter, he noted, since Cespedes is “much more familiar” with the organization. The 31-year-old has personally indicated his interest in returning to the Mets, said Alderson, and there has been extensive communication with his agent.
Among other topics, Alderson also chatted about the alternatives in the event Cespedes heads elsewhere. He suggested there are other “significant” right-handed hitters who could conceivably be pursued, noting Jose Bautista as one of several free agents and possible trade targets who may be available. There are also “complementary piece[s]” who could be had; Alderson noted Steve Pearce as an example of a player who’d at least hypothetically offer another option. It’s still an open question for the team, said the veteran executive, whether it’s truly necessary to add another right-handed-hitting outfielder given the team’s other lineup options.

Sandy Alderson also stated that Cespedes has texted the organization and said he expressed interest in returning.

He is gonna go with who pays the most. Lol

4 yrs/$110mm now, after his opt-out, is like he had 5/$137.5 total. I don’t think 3/$90 gets it done, but would rather do that.
Otherwise, Encarnacio for 1B means they can cut Duda.
hojostache
Cut Duda?
He’s averaged 121OPS+ over 7 years. Yes he is coming off of an injury shortened ’16, but his prior two years were solid:
2014: .253/.349/.481/.830 30HR, 137OPS+
2015: .244/.352/.486/.838, 27HR, 130OPS+
If healthy, he is a top 10-12 1B. Yes he is streaky as hell, but his bat plays and he is at least average if not a bit better as a 1B glove.
theruns
In 2014 and 2015, Duda finished in the top 10 in the NL in OPS and OPS+.
Thronson5
I really think either the Dodgers, Angels and Giants will sign this guy. I don’t know which one but I feel like it’ll be one of those guys. As a Dodgers fan if it’s not the Dodgers I hope it’s the Angels if it does come down to those 3 teams lol.
kwasdog10
It would make no sense for the angels to pay up for him right now. They are at minimum 2-3 years away from being competitive again. There will be plenty of OF free agents to pursue down the line. I.e. A trout Harper outfield in a few years, among other options, if they can pry Bryce away from the yanks.
bigkempin
The Angels and Harper? They have an owner who refuses to cross the luxury tax limit. Trout and Pujols will make a combined $61M that year. So let’s call it $90M if you add Harper. That would leave about $80M to fill out the rest of the roster…..
GeoKaplan
I don’t disagree that the scenario is unlikely, but there will be new CBA by then, with higher luxury tax limits expected.
I guess I’m not sold on Harper as Trout’s peer. He strikes me as streaky, injury-prone, and surly. He is Goofus to Trout’s Gallant in many ways. He figures to score a huge payday from someone but I think there are other, better young players than Harper.
jackdunovan
Giants, willing to spend big and go all in now as they have one of the weakest farms in all of baseball especially since they as that embarrassing losing streak due too no offense wouldn’t be surprised if they go after a dexter fowler or Justin turner as well
bonquisha
Makes more sense for LA to focus on 2nd and 3rd base since they have more stopgap options in the corner OFs such as toles, thompson, ethier and possibly puig or whatever trade return he nets.
pseudostats
I like Yoenis. Not a Mets fan, but I do enjoy watching them and I hope he stays there.
cxcx
I’ll throw out a team I just thought of that I haven’t seen mentioned for him- the Rangers.
They like big moves/star players, they don’t have a lot of position players locked in long-term (just Choo, Andrus, and Odor I think; Fielder done, Lucroy one year, Beltre two and old, Gallo never established himself), and they have open outfield and DH spots. (NL teams should really avoid this guy- look how bulky he is- he won’t last more than another year or two in the field.)
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
Sandy doing what he does best, Slowing Smoke out of his azz and hoping that the problem goes away.
theruns
yeah, that’s exactly what he’s doing lol.
Man, that must have been a rough day last year when he won MLB Executive of the Year, huh? You probably had to just unplug and get away for a bit. Maybe take a long walk and think about things.
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
He lucked into it. If this azzhole had spend some dollars before that year started the Mets would have run away from the pack. Terry is the reason they have been competitive every year.
By the way most of their great pitching came from Omar’s drafts. Bet you didnt know that, did you?
hojostache
I don’t blame Sandy, I blame their small market spending POS ownership group. The only blame I have for Sandy is when he gets a bit too arrogant thinking he can out-think every GM on every deal. He isn’t great at FA signings, but he has always had a very limited budget with which to work.
theruns
Sandy doesn’t make the financial decisions, the owners do. In that regard, on some level, he doesn’t even answer to the owners, he was placed into the position by MLB to keep the Mets doofus owners afloat after the Madoff mess. (Not sure if you knew that…)
As somebody who works in minor league baseball, I have met Omar several times, he is a true gentleman, a good baseball man and one of the nicest people in the game. His backround is in scouting, and while he was sound in that regard he was a bit overwhelmed by the other demands of that job. I know dudes like you think the GM is on the back fields with a clipboard scouting players but that’s not the case. It is an EXECUTIVE position. Alderson is an executive, and a very good one despite your incoherent babblings. He took over a train wreck… no money to spend, bad contracts he had to wait out, and horrible, meddling owners with no clue what they are doing. The notion that he “got lucky” is beyond laughable.
He does what he does… he is extremely patient, methodical, and persistent in everything he does. He’s an Ivy League ex Marine, that’s how he runs things and he’s good at it. He has turned them into a team set up for long term success that is financially sustainable despite the father son idiots than own them.
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
Calm down, I know you have a Mancrush for Moneyball GM’s (try Billy Bean if you go that way). Sandy is a pompous and overrated. GM. 2/3rd’s of his moves are busts or the mets lose on it (getting Eric Young Jr, letting Justin Turner go because he was going to get $800,000/yr and the big one letting a great Daniel Murphy go, a player with more heart and soul than any player on this roster). Of-course Sandy’ s Brilliant Software and great Intuition lead him to believe he was smarter than everyone else. He is a Pompous Condescending azz. Sorry to hurt your feelings.
theruns
He’s not really a “Moneyball” GM at all. I’m not even sure what that means any more…. is Theo Epstein one too?
He is a methodical, patient GM who builds from the ground up, (just like Epstein) which is why they have a roster that they can keep together for quite a few years coming up.
They have an entire, elite young pitching staff signed until like 2020. They continue to draft well too, they have quite a few recent draft picks (Rosario, Smith, Nimmo, Cecchini, Gsellman) who are really going to help them in the next few years.
And I love how you cherry pick the mistakes, (every GM makes them, BTW….100%) and gloss over the really good trades/draft picks/signings he made.
The proof is in the pudding, he built an annual playoff team that will continue to improve so you may want to hide your eyes for the next few years. It’s going to be rough.
takeyourbase
The Mets had money to spend then?
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
Yes his picks have been great…Cecchini? He was drafted as defense first but cant get out of his own way (close to 30 errors per year three years in a row). The genius Sandy wants him to play second (yeah he’ll be much better over there). Nimmo? Was he worth a first-round pack? (I believe Jose Fernandes was available before him)…Sandy lucked in this thanks to Omar’s very shrewd scouting and picks). Otherwise, Sandy is an OVERRATED JOKE.
theruns
I don’t know which is funnier, using errors (OMG DEREK JETER HAD 56 ERRORS IN ONE YEAR HE CANT FIELD!!!) to judge a minor league defensive player or cherry picking the MLB draft which is the biggest crapshoot in all of sports. For the record, 14 other GM’s passed on Fernandez too.
Oh, and while we’re on the subject of/cherry picking the 2011 draft, can I play too? The Mets drafted some dude named Michael Fulmer in the second round. They used him to get Cespedes, and he was AL ROY last year.
Also not sure if you actually watch the games, but he drafted another pitcher in the 13th round. Some guy with a funny name. Gsellman? Rings a bell. Did you actually watch him pitch last year, up at the majors at age 22 and dealing? Looked pretty good to me. Guess he got “lucky” with that one too lol.
You left out the part where Cecchini, at age 22, hit .325 in AAA after hitting .317 with an .819 OPS in AA as a 21 year old.
Nimmo hit .352 in AAA this year, almost won the PCL batting title. He has a solid career ahead of him as an OBP based outfielder who can show some pop and play all three OF spots well.
Oh, and if you scroll further down the page for the 2011 draft, you’ll see the Mets also drafted Seth Lugo in the thousandth round.
Another lucky strike!
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
You claim to know the Minor leagues, correct? Well if you did you would know that everyone hits .350 in the PCL. The numbers mean nothing there or at the very least are skewed. As go Gsellman I have been following him for 2 years and knew he would be very good (although to read the ‘experts’ he is nothing more than a back-of-the-rotation guy). As for Lugo, the jury is still out (I see him as a very Good version of Eric Goeddel). Anyone with a brain would have known not to draft Cecchini.
I like Nimmo but I see him as a 4th or 5th outfielder.
Just to reiterate Sandy is overrated as a Genius. He isn’t and his arrogance is nauseating.
theruns
No, not “everybody” hits .350 in the PCL.
Nimmo finished second in the league in hitting among qualifying players, and in the top 10 in OPS as well.
The only player of a similar age (the rest of the leaderboard is mostly veterans..) who was near the top of the league in those categories was Willson Contreras of the Cubs.
Nimmo has limits to his game but he should be a productive major leaguer. A 4th or 5th OF is his floor, his ceiling is as a solid, starting player who can OPS .750-.800 and play solid defense.
BrodiesHairisGreezy!
For the record I like Nimmo also but do not see him as a first-rounder. This was another move done to save the Mets $$$ (drafting a high-school kid who no one has ever heard of)
stratcrowder
I’m wondering how Steve Pearce made it in the same paragraph (or article for that matter) alongside Cespedes and Bautista!?! I mean, REALLY?
