The Diamondbacks have claimed outfielder Jeremy Hazelbaker off waivers from the Cardinals, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (via Twitter). He represents the first player acquisition for new GM Mike Hazen.
[RELATED: Updated Diamondbacks Depth Chart]
Hazelbaker debuted last year in St. Louis at 28 years of age, breaking onto the scene with an unexpectedly hot start. He ultimately came back down to earth, though, and ended the year with a cumulative .235/.295/.480 slash and 12 home runs over 224 plate appearances. Hazelbaker’s sub-par on-base percentage and 28.6% strikeout rate raise questions about whether he can produce consistently at the big league level — particularly if he isn’t able to maintain a lofty .245 isolated power mark.
While there is cause for pessimism in a player who has never really been seen as much of a prospect and wasn’t able to crack the majors until his age-28 campaign, there are also some reasons for hope. Hazelbaker has abused Triple-A pitching since coming to St. Louis in the middle of the 2015 season, and has shown some pop at times in the past. Plus, the lefty hitter was much better against right-handed pitching, suggesting he could have some platoon function.
It’s not yet clear just what Arizona intends to do with Hazelbaker, but he could certainly share time in a corner outfield spot or play off the bench. David Peralta is the team’s only established, southpaw-swinging outfielder, though youngster Socrates Brito also saw a good bit of major league time last year and players like Zach Borenstein may be ready to challenge for an opportunity.
calikid13
Good claim. That should progress the Cardinals to move Lord Bader up by the end of next year. Mags Sierra slated for the following year.
dbacksrs
The guy definitely has some pop. Looking forward to seeing what he’ll do for the D’Backs.
STLCards33
He can stroke it a little bit but don’t go thinking he’s a significant addition
dbacksrs
Yeah, don’t expect this guy to win an MVP anytime soon, but looks like he can be a decent enough bat off the bench.
gojira15
Seems like a guy with pop that should play well at Chase. Terrible plate discipline. Below average fielder with above average base running. He will be a good bat against righties most likely. Not sure what the Cardinals are cooking up with cutting Kiekhefer and Hazelbaker.
tim815
It’s not a plan. They only have 40 spots on the 40 Man, and they have to clear room for guys that are Rule 5 Draft-eligible.
See below.
vtadave
I think his nickname is Mr. April
cba93
Hahahahahaha
cardfan2011
Noooo! I liked him 🙁 oh well so long Hazel-Raker. He’s a good ballplayer D-Backs
tim815
The Redbirds had some tough roster choices, with Kiekhafer and Hazelbaker. Would have liked more than surrender value from either/both.
makaio6
Hazelbaker was a great bench player. Pinch-hitting. Just depth, etc. Part of the best bench in baseball. Would’ve liked to see him back in that position.
AddisonStreet
Best bench in baseball? Maybe they should have started those guys instead haha
petrie000
he played for the Cubs? i did not know that
/end trolling
Solaris611
I’m still trying to understand why STL released him.
tim815
The 40 Man roster.
The Cards can only have 40 on the 40 through the winter. The same thing with Kiekhafer. They didn’t want to run him through waivers. They kind of had to.
They need space for Mags Sierra and others.
That Zach Duke has to take a roster spot all winter doesn’t help.
BoldyMinnesota
Can’t they just 60 day dl him?
tim815
Only two problems. He’s not hurt. And it’s the off-season.
Every off-season, teams have to trim to 40. This prevents teams from “hording” talent. Teams with less talent/depth get to claim guys on the cheap this time of year.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
There’s no 60 man dl in the offseason.
montanalevi
Good player in the field with some pop and SPEED, but MM didn’t like him. Unbelievable that he played Faceplant in the outfield instead. JH will help the D-backs. Cards just got EVEN SLOWER.
Wainofan
Who is on our 40 man roster that we lost kiekefer and hazelbaker? Or is something else going on?
tim815
I was noting StL was looking at a roster crunch in August, or so.
C- Molina/Pena/Kelly
SP Wainwright/Garcia/Leake/Lynn/Martinez/Reyes/Wacha/Weaver/Gonzalez
RP Bowman/Broxton/Cooney/Duke/Lyons/Maness/Mayers/Oh/Rosenthal/Siegrist/
Socolovich/Tuivailala
IF Carp/Diaz/Peralta/Adams/Wong/Gyorko
OF Garcia/Grichuk/Moss/Pham/Piscotty
That’s 35. Need room for guys added to keep them from getting Rule 5’d. Possibly a few more moves soon.
By the way, guys added soon (like Sierra) can’t be kicked off the 40 to make a spot for a free agent.
Serious decisions to make.
EndinStealth
I’d give Kelly the backup spot and let Pena walk.
tim815
Pena has guaranteed money, either way. Letting him go costs $2.5 million. Probably a bit less, as someone would sign him for league minimum.
But not many easy releases.
Wainofan
Why would moss and duke be on there? I also would not have Pena on there, kelly should stay in aaa where he can play everyday, but a backup as good as Pena is a dime a dozen
tim815
Yeah. Moss should be off. (It’s tough to find a current current list.)
Duke kind of has to be. The Cardinals used him to the point of injury. You can’t injure a guy, then release him before he’s healthy. Unless they come to an agreement that Duke would approve of.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Just go to baseball prospective. Cardinals cots. And yes you can cards just have to be willing. Duke will end up getting released because of his TJS. He will be DFAd when they need his spot.
tim815
Not sure on that.
He seems of less value than Hazelbaker.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Luckily for Duke he has a 5.5 major league contract. He’ll also have the 18 full months of rehab but there is no reason for the cards to keep him on the roster. So DFAing will be the only option especially with valuable roster spots needed.
tim815
If I’m at a job, and in the course of my job, I get injured, the employer can’t necessarily fire me for getting injured. They’re supposed to give me a period to rehab.
MLB has a strong players union.
If I recall correctly, the Marlins Brian Morris suffered a back injury in May. He was disabled. He was placed on the 60. Then, once healthy, he was run through waivers.
I’m not convinced a team can release or DFA a player who was injured while as a team participant.
I could be wrong, but the Cardinals _might not be allowed to_ release Duke until he’s healthy.. I guess if you have a specific case or three of a team promptly releasing an injured player who wants to rehab his injury, there would be precedent.
I’ve asked people who should know.
Nobody has answered.

No mention in the article about Hazen being the Director of Player Development when the Red Sox drafted Hazelbaker in 2009. Doesn’t make Hazelbaker any better than a 5th OF and/or an organizational depth piece but this site usually catches connections like this
higuys
Nice catch, thanks for adding that info. I enjoy seeing that kind of stuff
stl_cards16 2
Hazelbaker us a really good 4th OF. Just needs to be used properly.
billydaking
Not really. He’s a AAAA player who had a great year…and that meant a .238 BA with a crap-ton of strikeouts. After his hot start in March (when he hit 5 of his 12 home runs), he pretty much fell off a cliff.
