The Blue Jays were among the teams that chased then-Yankees designated hitter/right fielder Carlos Beltran prior to the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline, Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News reported earlier this month.
“We saw Beltran over the years with the Yankees, and what a great hitter he was,” said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. “A clutch-type perfomer.”
Deals between the AL East rival Yankees and Blue Jays have been rare, with Brendan Kuty of NJ.com noting that the teams’ most recent trade came when New York acquired Raul Mondesi in 2002. Beltran ended up going to the Rangers, who sent three right-handed pitching prospects (including 2015 fourth overall pick Dillon Tate) to the Yankees for the 39-year-old. Along with the Rangers and Blue Jays, at least three other AL playoff contenders – the Astros, Indians and Red Sox – pursued Beltran in advance of the deadline.
Even though their summer interest in Beltran didn’t lead to a deal, the Blue Jays still went on to vanquish him and the Rangers in a three-game ALDS sweep. Toronto, which then fell to Cleveland in the ALCS, is now facing an offseason in which three of its most important offensive cogs could depart as free agents. With Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista and Michael Saunders all potentially on the way out, the Jays circling back to Beltran as an affordable stopgap in free agency seems possible.
Considering his age and declining defense, Beltran’s a strong bet to remain in the AL as primarily a DH, where Encarnacion, Bautista and Saunders saw action in a combined 121 games this year. Beltran won’t come cheap after slashing .295/.337/.513 with 29 home runs in 593 plate appearances in 2016, but he should appeal to offense-needy teams on a short-term contract.

The Yankees were problay asking for Reese McGuire and Harold Ramirez.

The same day the jays got them? don’t think so .. they need pitching they are looking everywhere even when we got some few guys capable of throwing some innings in the minor … they like tate stuff.
yankees500
The jays got those guys at the very last couple minutes before the deadline. I say they had some time to trade them to the Yankees. Also, other than Reid-Foley who probably wasn’t available, what pitcher would the blue jays have sent the Yankees?
BoldyMinnesota
Connor Greene was our top pitching prospect going into the year, but he faltered and was passed on the depth chart. Maybe Jon Harris? He was a first rounder last year and had a good debut season. Im guessing a deal with Toronto wouldve been more of a quantity over quality trade since we dont have a Tate type pitcher

They could’ve been talking about a three way deal at the time that would’ve shipped those players before the deadline, so it is possible, though it never materialized.

The Jays also tried to get Beltran when he was a free agent a couple years back, or so they say. Apparently the field surface was a major issue for Beltran.

Don’t see the Jays going after Beltran, I can see them signing EE or going after a player like Goldschmidt.

Votto
MatthewBaltimore23
What are they going to trade for goldschmidt?
ivanivan
Lol…no, the price for Goldschmidt will be astronomical, and Diamondbacks will also look to compete next year, so its likely they won’t even entertain the notion of a trade in the offseason.
They are better off going for Votto given the Reds look light years away from being competitive and will likely eat some salary due to his age..
He’ll also be a local favorite due to being a star Canadian player. .
Boo79
Votto has been rumoured to the Jay’s for sometime now, if that deal was something the Jay’s really wanted it would of been done by now. As for Goldschmidt no way, the cost for him would be way more then the Jay’s would part ways with. You have to remember Arizona needs to rebuild the farm system since there donation to Braves last season.
Wainofan
Weaver, flaherty, adams, leake (eat alot of his contract and he’d also waive no trade cause arizonas his first choice) bader and sierra from cards for Goldy
Phillies2017
Or you could just sign Ryan Howard for $2 million. His stats at Busch have to be through the roof.
BoldyMinnesota
No way you get Goldschmidt without involving Reyes
ivanivan
If they don’t want to make a large commitment on Encarnacion, Beltran is likely the best shortgap option. Napoli and Morales are probably the next best.
stymeedone
I could see Boston going after Beltran to replace Big Papi for 2017. Short term commitment for a veteran leader, who has always hit in the postseason.

What’s a guy like Beltran going to get? He’s 39, I can’t see him getting more than a 1 year deal for 8-10 mil. If u can get him at that number he’d be a good fit for everyday DH. He can still hit and he’s a switch hitter. Something the Jays really need.
