The Padres have designated outfielder Patrick Kivlehan and infielder Nick Noonan for assignment, the team announced. Their 40-man roster spots were needed for the team’s wave of prospect call-ups, which were also made official.
Though he earned his first MLB promotion, hitting well in just five games of action, Kivlehan will presumably find his way to another club after a year of constant change. (San Diego was his third team in 2016.) Kivlehan spent most of the season at the highest level of the minors, posting a .254/.302/.416 slash with a dozen homers in 397 trips to the dish.
Noonan, 27, received only brief major league time this season — his first as a member of an organization other than the division-rival Giants. Over 374 plate appearances at Triple-A, Noonan has posted a .301/.338/.427 batting line.

I mean, why not just put Christian Bethancourt and Colin Rea on the 60-day DL?
Slinkinlip
They did
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
No they didn’t!

Going to need 40 man spots this winter anyway. 48 guys currently on 40 man. I would think they will need to eliminate at least 13 of them to protect players, claim players and participate in rule 5 again.

Kivlehan was playing well and could have been a solid bench piece. I dont get it.
zippytms
He’s a deep bench piece. A righty hitter who can play below-average defense at 1B/3B/LF/RF. He’s stuck behind Myers, Wallace, Solarte, Schimpf, Dickerson, Arcia, Blash, Renfroe, Bethancourt, Pirela, and probably a few more. If he clears waivers and accepts minor league assignment I’m happy to keep in El Paso, but there isn’t room on the 40-man for him.

Padres fans have come to know a fire-sale, or 2, 3. So holding out hope in San Diego is futile. During the John Moores ownership era. Now, those were the days. The players got the fans excited. And, it was worth the money to spend the ticket prices.
mrpoe87
That is such BS, John Moores era was filled with low spending and awful draft choices, Bochy did what he could with teams made up of castaways and mediocre talent, the Moores era is a big reason why the Padres haven’t done crap since 1998,

I’m kind of bummed about Kivlehan. I thought he was productive in his role
disgruntledreader 2
He was 8th on the depth chart at this point. He’s a poor man’s version of Alex Dickerson, with more service time.
beauvandertulip
Yeah, why dfa a guy that has time on his contract when you could have just dfa’d Rosales or amarista. That was a terrible GM move
davep-3
Rosales is having excellent season – 2nd on team in WAR at 2.2 and has .809 OPS
disgruntledreader 2
Kivlehan is pretty likely to pass through waivers and remain in the organization.
“Losing” Noonan is totally irrelevant.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Pretty sure Kivlehan can elect free agency if not on a 40-man roster at the end of the season.
disgruntledreader 2
He would not become a minor league free agent until after next year.
davep-3
I thought a player can be a free agent if DFA’d twice in same season.
disgruntledreader 2
A player with enough service time can. He’s nowhere near the threshold.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
That’s if they clear waivers. Kivlehan never cleared waivers.
Phillies2017
He has to be outrighted twice and Kivlehan won’t be a minor league free agent until after 2018 as he was drafted in 2012
TheIncident
Anyone upset over dropping Kivlehan needs to stop. He would be behind Margot, Renfroe, Jankowski, Dickerson, Blash, Arcia, plus Schimpf, Asujae, and Myers can play OF in an emergency.
whereslou
Maybe Kivlehan can come back to Seattle for the third time this season. I was a little surprised they dfa’d him last time it’s not like we are busting at the seams with guys to play the OF or 1st when they dfa’d him. It is a little different with Vogelbach now but we could still use the OF help.
