Blue Jays Triple-A first baseman Jesus Montero has been slapped with a fifty game suspension after testing positive for a banned stimulant, dimethylbutylamine, the league announced. Montero was once a hyped prospect, but has been trying unsuccessfully to revive his career in recent years.
Montero, 26, never panned out with the Mariners after he was shipped to Seattle in exchange for Michael Pineda in rare swap of high-end young talents who had each reached the majors. All said, Montero owns a .253/.295/.398 big league batting line in his 865 career plate appearances.
This year was the first since 2011 in which Montero failed to earn any MLB action. He did post a strong .317 batting average over 518 Triple-A plate appearances. But he only walked 23 times, resulting in a .349 OBP, and didn’t show much of the power that he had long been expected to provide (11 home runs, .438 slugging).
Of course, Montero was originally a catching prospect; now that he’s limited to first base and DH duties, the bar is raised for his bat. It’s not clear what kind of opportunity he’ll have in the future. For one thing, he’ll need to serve his ban at the start of 2017; for another, it’s not his first, as Montero also took a fifty-game hit after he was caught up in the Biogenesis scandal.

I thought a Second Offense was more than 50 games???
jd396
His first suspension wasn’t specifically for a positive test.

This sounds like it’s for some booga sugar rather than PEDs
firstbleed
Maybe MLB differentiates between PEDs vs. Banned Drugs (stimulants in this case)? The first time was PEDs, so my guess is that they are treated separately.
24TheKid
Thats what I thought.

It’s a nasty drug. Originally made under a different name that was banned by the FDA. Honestly I think someone gave Montero a supplement containing the drug and didn’t tell him. You gotta know who your friends are… especially the ones that will try to kill you with a drug that causes heart problems.

Let’s face it… dudes career is over. Say sayonara Jesus.

Man did that trade not work out Pineda has been injured much of his time in NY and Montero has been nothing all of his time in Seattle. Not sure if Z was afraid Pineda was going to break down so they shipped him out but it was another fail on his watch. I know it at the time was supposed to be a good trade but so were so many others. Montero turned into an ice cream eating joke.

Meant had been nothing

It’s to bad he never got good in the MLB, I would of liked hearing the Ice Cream Man nick name more. Even tho nobody really knows where that name is from, or I could just be wrong with how it came to be.

So the independent leagues or Japan?

Gary Sanchez is the real deal. This guy was a ho ho eating monster…

Did he do coke or something? Other than some prescription medications, it has to be an illicit drug

Don’t make up false rumors — suspension would be for “drug of abuse” if it was anything like that.
24TheKid
He did not make up any rumors, he asked a question.

RIP
He did drive in the only run in Felix’s perfect game though.. Grateful for that at least
That 2012 team still gives me shivers.. A .230 clip was considered above average that year

If anyone needs a change of scenery, it is this kid!!
Professional sports, nine times out of ten, always will give a guy another shot. With that being said, typically the opportunity for another chance stems from two main aspects: the player’s age and respective talent level and the severity of the offense made by the player.
Either way, obviously, Montero being in Seattle does neither party any good. Maybe if they release him and he gets signed by another team, after his suspension is served, then he can try to regain some of that once highly sought after talent.
In the meantime, if he stays in Seattle, it will unquestionably just be more of the same from Montero. The only other possible outcome I see is that this incident may finally light a fire under his rearend and he gets his act together there, but I HIGHLY DOUBT Seattle keeps Montero around after this latest failed test and resulting suspension.

He has already had the change of scenery…he was with Toronto
Michael Macaulay-Birks
didn’t the first paragraph of the article say that he’s a Blue Jays minor-leaguer?
El Duderino
I gave him the heckling of his life. AAA rain delay game left 20 people whispering in his ear when he was behind the dish. Just kept saying he was a first baseman pretending to be a catcher. He had 5 passed balls.
Michael Macaulay-Birks
I bet that made you feel like a big man, What with that crusty nacho cheese on your T-shirt….i’ve never understood assholes that go to minor-league games to heckle players that make 10 times your Walmart salary

Want to impress us? Wait till after the game by the team bus and heckle him there, face-to-face
