Here’s the latest out of Milwaukee…
- Khris Davis and Jean Segura could have been building blocks for the Brewers rather than enjoying big seasons for the A’s and Diamondbacks, though GM David Stearns tells Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he doesn’t regret dealing the two players last winter to pick up younger talent. “There are going to be times when you trade a player and he has a good year, and that’s OK,” Stearns said. “These are challenging decisions but we make them with a great deal of confidence. If we continue to follow this approach, we believe we’re going to amass the critical amount of talent at the major-league level that’s going to allow us to compete consistently.” Both Stearns and owner Mark Attanasio said are committed to continuing the team’s rebuilding plan, and are pleased with the Brewers’ progress in 2016.
- Attanasio hinted that manager Craig Counsell will receive a contract extension this winter. Counsell’s original three-year deal expires at the end of the 2017 season. Counsell has a 131-162 record as Milwaukee’s skipper, though wins and losses on a rebuilding team aren’t necessarily as important as how Counsell has handled several challenges in his first full season as manager — keeping the Brewers prepared and competitive amidst a losing season, preparing younger players getting their first shot in the bigs and handling the trade rumors swirling around Jonathan Lucroy and Ryan Braun. As it is somewhat unusual for a new GM to step into a job with a manager he didn’t originally hire, Attanasio said he has been impressed at how Counsell and Stearns have worked together.
- Today was the Brewers’ last home game of the season, and it could potentially also be Braun’s last time wearing a Milwaukee uniform at Miller Park. The slugger told reporters (including Haudricourt, via Twitter) that he didn’t think there was “a great chance” he would be traded this offseason, though there is a “higher chance” at a deal this winter than there has been in past years. “On a day like today, it’s impossible not to think about it [a trade] at least a little bit. You try to stay focused,” Braun said. Several teams were rumored to be interested in Braun around the trade deadline, and the Brewers and Dodgers seemingly came rather close on a potential deal that would’ve sent Braun to Los Angeles for a trade package including Yasiel Puig. Braun will have quite a bit of control over his future, as his contract allows him to block trades to 23 teams every season. The Dodgers were one of three teams (along with the Angels and Marlins) who weren’t included on his no-trade list in each of the last two years.

That segura trade was great for both teams.

Davis is still a total butcher defensively, and with no DH in the NL there’s simply no spot for him there.
Segura was dealt from an organization surplus, and Brewers got value back.
Don’t understand why anyone would chastise those trades, they’re hardly in the Josh Donaldson realm of meaningless trades of great players.
VillarFan5
Yeah and isan Diaz is already in MLB.com’s top 100 prospects!
mustangpat7
Davis is also a high strikeout guy always chasing the the breaking ball away. Not wanted in Milwaukee with his noodle arm. Chris Carter is enough by way of strikeouts.
daveinmp
Premier power bats don’t grow on trees, and Davis’ weak arm isn’t that big a deal in LF. He offset that by being able to cover a lot of ground for a LF. The problem isn’t so much that they traded him, as when they traded him. He’s worth a heck of a lot more than they got in return now than he was last winter after a 40 HR, 100 RBI season. They got one questionable catching prospect who didn’t hit at AA and a single A pitcher with a very miniscule track record heading into this year who did nothing in 2016 to indicate he’s any kind of prospect going forward. Look Stearns has made some good moves but let’s stop drinking the Kool-Aid and realize the Davis trade was a lousy deal for the Brewers.
thebfr21
Cover of a good amount of ground. LOL slowest black guy I have ever seen in my life with the worst arm I’ve ever seen in my life
BoldyMinnesota
Brewers notes and there’s nothing on Tim Dillard’s promotion? Come on

When does Braun get to change his no trade teams each year?
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Yes it appear so it’s been different before. That being said he earns 10-5 at the beginning of the year so he’ll have full control if it gets that far.
jmi1950
Braun did not get credit for the time he was suspended so his 10yrs do not accrue until after the 2017 trade deadline.. The reason I asked about when he can change his no trade teams is to find out if there is any time left to trade him to the 10 teams he left off for 2016.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I should have probably elaborated he’ll need 54 days to reach 10-5 so it’ll kick in towards the backend of May. To me that’s still beginning of the year. He’s accrues his 9 years and 129( out of 183). Usually those lists are turned in after the World Series.
jmi1950
So he can now name the LAD’s as one of his no trade teams and the brewers will be very motivated him trade him over the winter to avoid 10/5 issues if he was injured this spring, like what happened with Ethier.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Well after the season yes he can change his list. Those lists are turned in pretty quickly. But yes all that can happen. That being said the Brewers aren’t in the best of bargaining positions due to the teams on his list. The only two teams that makes sense would be the Giants and Dodgers. In the end unless there is a bidding war it might make more sense for them to hold him until he wants out to a playoff team.
jmi1950
If they wait until Braun has 10/5 rights they will be in a worse position. Look at what happened with the Phillips to the Caps trade last year. The Red Sox could use him at DH and have prospects plus Rusney Castillo’s bad contract. Castillo is a very good CF and has never had a real chance — only 300 AB,s in parts of 3 yrs with an .695 OPS — many current bad “D” OF’s did a lot worse in there first 300 AB’s. Baltimore could send Ubaldo’s bad contract and a couple of prospects. Toronto has 3 big FA bats to replace. Tampa Bay could send a very good pitcher if the Brewers ate a chunk of $$$$. I am sure there are other teams who would like that bat at DH or LF.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I don’t know if Castillo is good. A .695 doesn’t inspire greatness he also hasn’t performed well in the minors and he’ll be 30 next year so that doesn’t really fit the rebuild mold.
TB that’s just not their MO. The pitchers they will look to move will provide more value in the anemic FA pitching market.
Baltimore’s main problem is pitching so Jimenez’s reemergence after being sent to the pen will probably stop them from making that trade.
The main problem the Brewers will run into is who is on his trade list. Those right now are warm weather cities and really the only two that are competing or close to it are Dodgers and Giants. To trade for bad contracts doesn’t make any sense unless they are obtaining high upside young major leaguers with control and prospects.
So no it doesn’t make sense for the Brewers to trade for bad contracts unless they receive considerable young talent. If the teams stay as constructed the Brewers have to hope the Giants and dodgers try to outdo each other. That being said Braun knowing he can dictate where he goes it’s pretty clear of his preference.
jmi1950
Braun has a bad contract for the team. The Brewers won’t get any talent back unless they eat $$$ or take back a bad contract.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
But it doesn’t hurt the Brewers with the salary cap and their young players making the min. He’s also making the money value of his production.
jmi1950
It doesn,t help the Brewers rebuild to keep Braun . What it does do is set up 5 more years of being losers. They have to get the best deal they can ASAP.
ib6ub9
If they won’t get anything back for Braun with his “bad contract ” why would you trade one of the top players in baseball for nothing. They don’t need to unload him for nothing they have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. They will only trade him if they get high end prospects without eating money.
jmi1950
Braun has negative defensive metrics and 76 MM for his age 33-36 seasons is a bad contract. Nelson Cruz with bigger HR/RBI numbers could only get 4 yrs 52 MM for his age 33-36 seasons. Ortiz only got 16 MM on 1 yr deals the last 3 yrs because of his PR value. (OK he also put up 25++ MM numbers)
LAD were only willing to give up 2 prospects (not top) if MIL took Puig with a contract LAD considered” a cancer”..
If MIL wants to rebuild they have to eat $$$ to get top prospects.
Ruben Amaro refused to eat $$$ to trade Ryan Howard and went from PHIL GM to 1st base coach in Boston. If Braun is not traded before he gets 10/5 rights a similar fate awaits the MIL “brain trust” after a couple of more 4th or 5th place finishes.
angelsfan1391
Because that’s what both sides agreed to when they signed the contract.
aknott1
I’m pretty he’s asking when the next time he gets to change his list.
strike4
Brewers would be CRAZY to trade for Puig. The ultimate chemistry killer.
davbee
Yeah, he certainly held the Dodgers back this year.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Or maybe he was signed at 21 and took a took a little bit of time to grow up. And now he’s finally starting to get it.
Sports
Red Sox should trade for Braun to fill DH / LF next year. If he would allow such a trade
