Facial hair policy may not typically be at the top of the list of considerations for free agents, but Marlins righty Andrew Cashner says it’s a matter of concern to him, as Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. The recently-acquired starter says that he “still hate[s]” Miami’s policy forbidding beards and intends to weigh that when he reaches the open market after the season. “That is a big deal to me in free agency,” he said. The 29-year-old seems unlikely to be more than a rental for the Fish anyway — his 4.78 ERA with the team is a near match for the 4.76 mark he put up before he was dealt — but if he sticks to his guns, it would seem that he also will be unlikely to sign with the beardless Yankees this winter.
Here are some more notes from the National League:
- Diamondbacks center fielder A.J. Pollock left tonight’s action with what the team announced as a groin strain. The severity of the injury is not known at present, but it represents another turn of bad luck for a player who missed the vast majority of the year with a broken bone in his elbow. The 28-year-old hasn’t quite been himself at the plate since returning, though returning to health is the primary consideration and he has only had a chance to accumulate 45 plate appearances thus far in a star-crossed season.
- The Giants have elected to remove Santiago Casilla from the closer’s role, skipper Bruce Bochy told reporters including Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle. San Francisco intends to play the matchups for the time being, but Bochy suggested both that Casilla could still see save opportunities and that rookie Derek Law may get some chances once he’s back from the DL. Law, 25, has posted a 1.94 ERA over his first 51 MLB frames, with 8.3 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9, and could set himself up as the team’s closer of the future. As for the 36-year-old Casilla, the move mostly represents an acknowledgment that he’s more a sturdy reliever than a lights-out presence at the back of the pen. He still carries a solid 3.52 ERA with 10.2 K/9 against 3.0 BB/9 in his walk season.
- By releasing Hector Olivera, the Padres forewent any chance of avoiding salary obligations that his jail time would otherwise have freed them from paying, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports (Twitter links). It’s important to note, though, that he is only slated to spend ten days in prison after his domestic violence conviction, and the team would only have been able to recoup salary if the time ended up being served during the season.
- Nationals lefty Sammy Solis has encountered a “roadblock” in his efforts to work through a shoulder injury, manager Dusty Baker told reporters including Dan Kolko of MASNsports.com (via Twitter). Washington still hopes that the 28-year-old will make it back by the end of the year, which could represent a nice boost as the club enters a highly likely postseason berth. Solis has had quite a nice season when healthy, posting a 2.35 ERA in 38 1/3 frames while compiling 10.3 K/9 and 4.7 BB/9.

cashner sucks with or without the beard
dstuart
Not nearly as much as Santiago Casilla.
pitnick
Casilla has a 2.40 ERA over 400+ appearances with the Giants. He’s one of the best relievers in team history. Just for context.
dstuart
lol you literally are defending the worst closer in the league this year. I don’t give a sh– about his career stats when he’s blown 9 games and lost another 4. He’s been trash, he shouldn’t be closing.
dstuart
What you have to say about Casilla now?
pustule bosey
Casilla madea great setup man but has been more than problematic this year as a closer, the giants haven’t been short of issues in the second half but casilla’s blown saves alone would put the giants back in first place.
disgruntledreader 2
Olivera is headed to jail, not to prison.
BronxBombers14
Hahaha. This bum is going to take team’s facial hair policies into consideration when hitting the FA market this offseason. He should be more concerned about team’s we’re not signing you because you suck policy.
pustule bosey
Why does he need to take that into consideration? Teams that think he sucks won’t offer on him
Ray Ray
That “bum” is going to make more money next year than you will in your entire life.
BronxBombers14
But he’s still a bum.
BronxBombers14
But he’s still a bum. Money isn’t a top priory for me. I’m not as much as a prostitute as you seem to think I am. Happiness is much more significant.
Ray Ray
Cute.

This is the same team that for YEARS forced it’s MiLB kids to wear those UGLY looking black sox pulled up to the knees.. They all looked like escaped convicts in those pin striped suits, rather than ball players…
Facial hair? I am as much, if not more to going back to old style game, but forcing players to keep hair trimmed up and no beards has been ALLOWED by most teams since the 60’s.. It’s the YANKEES that need to wake up.
Deke
Maybe he wants to look like every other lemming with the “FakerJack” look?
A'sfaninUK
Cashner to Oakland, book it! lol
bkwalker510
I agree. He’ll be the Billy Butler of the pitching staff!
TDKnies 2
I mean I seriously doubt Cashner would say no if either one wanted him enough to pay more than everyone else, but all else the same why go someplace that does stuff you don’t like?
bleacherbum
As petty as it might sound on the surface, Cashner does have a point. It’s 2016 & you look around the league and only two teams have this ancient rule in place that is ridiculous.
This isn’t the military. It’s a game. A game that less than 1 percent of the world gets to play professionally, who cares if they have facial hair or not? Especially in a day and age in which Cashners colleagues like Yadier Molina have neck tattoo’s exposed, Johnny Cueto & Hanley Ramirez can barley fit their hats over their du-rags and Dread-locks. Albert Pujols, Mookie Betts & Chris Sale all wear chains that look like they are best friends with Mister T.
All I’m saying is that it looks funky for two franchises to hold up a rule like facial hair when the league as a whole allows so much other expressions of freedom. Just my two cents, I know a lot of people won’t agree with me and will be quick to bash & puff their chests out because that’s what people do on this site but I like the fact that Cashner is speaking up about a stupid rule.
brandons-3
I get the Yankees because they have the tradition and all
davidcoonce74
Exactly. I mean we saw a player retire this season because of a rule about kids in the clubhouse. Knowing who the owner of the Marlins is I don’t doubt there are other, more odious rules.
MiggyCabby24
I agree, get rid of these old archaic rules. Beards and mustaches don’t effect how someone plays the game.
rocky7
27 World Championships says it all… A Home and Away uniform that has consistently been their trademark, and the last time I checked, i don’t think the Yankee franchise value was at the bottom of pro sports lists for total value.
I’m not disagreeing with you necessarily but its their choice as to rules if you wish to play for the team.
And if I were this guy Cashner, I might worry more about pitching with a 31-53 career record and a 4.7ish ERA, than whether i could have facial hair or not.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Get that “31-35 career record” out of here! A pitcher’s record is COMPLETELY irrelevant!
adamontheshore
Well, in the case of LaRoche his kid shouldn’t have been in the clubhouse for every game, none-the-less half the games. As far as Cashner is concerned I think he is acting a bit entitled. Besides doing some random construction jobs, every job I have ever had has had some form of a dress code. I prefer not to wear ties, but if I got offered a good job with a good salary I would wear five ties around my neck and be as happy as a drunk baby.
Sometimes I have to remind myself that most athletes are fairly uneducated, even those that went to college, entitled, young, and immature. Because any intelligent and mature adult wouldn’t think twice about taking a job that made them shave daily (as most of us have to do). There is nothing wrong with having rules about appearance so long as they are not unreasonable, and shaving is hardly unreasonable.
bleacherbum
Shaving is not unreasonable. But then again it does have different effects on people, I know for myself no matter what razor company I go with, shaving cream I use or after shave I put on, I will always get razor burn. I have sensitive skin & it sucks. I know the art of shaving and how you are taught to shave & it doesn’t matter, my skin doesn’t take to it. So I like to have stubble & not have to have the uncomfortable irritation all day at work.
Now couple that with competing on the highest stage of a game where you want to feel confident and comfortable at all times? Yeah that would effect my play for sure. Not to mention if you hate the way you look with a baby face, why does it matter how much you are getting paid? You are unhappy with your appearance. Having a fat wallet doesn’t cure not liking what you see when you look in the mirror.
adamontheshore
Now if you truly do have sensitive skin, I understand that and I would think that most teams, including the Yanks would compromise to a certain length. I have a friend who has told managers who were about to hire him that he has really sensitive skin, and also grows hair like a chia pet, and cannot shave every day. They have always been understanding.
If you want a beard, and not have a baby face, you can have one half the year. But, to say that it impacts where you will play is just entitled. I mean seriously, is a silly beard that important to you that you would potentially turn down playing for a team you like, in a city you like, and for a good salary? If so, I would say that your priorities are not in order. And, once again, he can have as bushy a beard as he wants throughout the winter, and probably into the fall if re-ups with the Marlins.
Ray Ray
When it takes a beard a couple of years to get to the length of Cashner’s, no he cannot have it through the winter and be happy.
I think we should turn this around and say that a stupid policy that has no effect on whether a ballplayer can compete at his job is causing the Marlins to potentially lose out on free agents. Even if you don’t like Cashner as a ballplayer, who is to say that he is the only one? Especially now that it is public. Yes some people won’t care if you give them enough money, but some do. So that lessens the free agent market for yourself automatically. Why keep a policy that will give your opponents an advantage over you?
rocky7
That may be the case with the Marlins as although they have won it all, they aren’t consistently in the hunt.
With the Yankees…..27 World championships and always in the hunt wrecks your theory Ray Ray.
I guess getting paid to play on a losing franchise but being able to have a beard is worth it???????
Ray Ray
Yeah I am pretty sure that their payroll had a lot more to do with winning those championships than a facial hair policy. The other 28 teams have won a total of 82 championships while allowing beards.
BTW, 22 of those championships happened before Steinbrenner adopted the facial hair policy.
Ray Ray
David Price openly stated that he wouldn’t join the Yankees as long as they had their facial hair policy in place. They gave Boston the advantage because of a beard policy. That’s their choice, but I think it is stupid to lose out on a free agent because of image.
rocky7
27 is still 27 buddie! And I think the rest of the league is catching up with the payroll defense big time.
chesteraarthur
27 is 27 is indeed a fact. But the majority of that fact does not support your point. Learn basic reasoning.
adamontheshore
And, if I was a manager and/or owner I would not even want a player who held his facial hair, or lack of, that high on his list of prioritize. If he cared that much about a beard, I would assume that he was not wholeheartedly committed to his art and pass. Players that say it should not be an issue might have a point, but so do teams who tell players to grow up and not let it be an issue. These aren’t dime a dozen minimum wage jobs.
davidcoonce74
It might be more comfortable not to shave, though. I have a job in which I must be clean-shaven, and I really don’t like it, because I get razor burn and irritation easily. I would be much more comfortable with a beard. Cashner has 28 destinations he can go to this winter and why not pick one that makes him most comfortable.
Ray Ray
He is entitled. He is entitled to his opinion. I’m sure he wouldn’t publicly have a problem with the policy if all 30 teams instituted the no beards policy, but it is just 2. If I am planning on applying for a job with 30 companies, I will eliminate several of those companies based on my personal beliefs/conflicts if they differed with the others even slightly. But then again I am not as much of a prostitute as you seem to be. Money is not the top priority with a job, unless you choose to make it your top priority. Happiness is far more significant.
BlueSkyLA
You’ve said it best. Ballplayers, even marginal journeymen like Cashner, will make more in one year than most of the fans will earn in a lifetime. Yet he (and fortunately not many others) feel they are entitled to take a firm stand for their own personal grooming rules? Silly doesn’t even cover it. Honestly what annoys me more are the fashion monkeys in baseball. The current fad is for beards; in a couple of years, the players will be onto something else. And guess what Andrew Cashner, if you shave off your beard, it will grow back. Something else you’ve lost probably never will.
rocky7
Well said BlueSkyLA
When you are employed by somebody, you work by their rules.
If you don’t like them, then work elsewhere. But, don’t make a big deal about it when you 20 games on the wrong side of the ledger.
Deke
THANK YOU!!! BlueSkyLA!!! Well said…
He can totally make whatever douchey choice he wants, if he wants to look like every other late model hipster with a fakerjack beard then he’s totally entitled to do that. What I find weird is that he said it out loud… I mean really…. WHY?
Firstly it makes him look stupid… it’s not like he’s standing up for some kind of civil rights issue or religious persecution… for him it’s fashion… if he doesn’t like it, sign somewhere else and shut it.
Secondly, now he has one less team to bid up his price. The more competition for his services the higher his value becomes. Then let’s say the Marlins do have the highest bid he can either:
1. Ask a BFT (Beard Friendly Team) to match the offer (which NOW they don’t have to because they know he won’t go back or go back to the Marlins)
2, Decline it and go to a BFT or
3. Tell the Marlins in private “Hey I wanna stay but you gotta be a BFT or I’m walking”
Just saying it out loud does him no favors.

Get rid of casilla now
stymeedone
Comparing shaving to prostitution seems a little extreme. Why not have the agent throw in a clause that pays him extra for shaving. That way the Yankees and Marlins can decide how much their policy is worth to them. I have no problem with teams having the policy. They do it in the armed forces as a way to emphasize/enforce discipline. I would love to see my team play with more discipline. Watching Kinsler get picked off, or thrown out at the plate because he slowed down, because he didn’t realize there was a play doesn’t seem very disciplined.
Ray Ray
I wasn’t comparing shaving to prostitution. I was saying that doing anything for money regardless of your feelings is comparable to prostitution.
BlueSkyLA
It helps to start with sensible feelings.
giants51
Giants need to revamp there bullpen…… Many new faces next season….. Casilla is crap…..
SixFlagsMagicPadres
What a silly man Cashner is.
deadmanonleave
From over the Atlantic, I find it hard to look at a wonderful sport and see that owners can tell people if they can have a beard or not. Land of the free? Must have misheard that bit.
BlueSkyLA
Misunderstood or misrepresented it, more like. I doubt very much that in whatever county you live in a bank employee could show up for work in shorts and a t-shirt and not get sent home. Thanks for your appreciation of the American pastime from abroad, though. Quite sincerely.
bleacherbum
You are bringing up two different points. Dress code & Personal Grooming.
I have walked into a bank hundreds of times and seen guys with a nice full beard that is properly edged and cleaned up. There is nothing wrong with that. Your comparison to them wearing a t-shirt & shorts is over the top and is apples to oranges, nobody in baseball shows up to a game in a t-shirt & shorts expecting the manager to put them in the lineup like that. C’mon man.
If the Yankees are going to discriminate against a guy who chooses to wear a beard then they need to tell C.C. & Gary Sanchez that they need to wear long sleeves and hide their tattoos. They need to tell Starlin Castro that he can’t have his chain dangling around while he runs around the field. Don’t pick & choose what rules you want to apply and those you do not. Getting tattoo’s and choosing to grow out your beard are both personal choices a guy can make that effect your appearance. Why is one allowed but the other is frowned upon? Riddle me that BlueSky?
bradthebluefish
That’s understandable. For myself, I always have a stubble for a beard because I hate shaving and nicking myself but I also want to look as professional as possible. I’d shave if necessary, but if I’m starring at similar job offers, the shaving rules will definitely be playing a factor.
chesteraarthur
dbacks 96 wins—woooooh
chesteraarthur
Who gives a fk? If the dude has multiple offers (which he will, even tho he sucks), why would he not consider that one makes him comfortable and one does not.
Why do people constantly go to how much these athletes are paid? Guess what, “in my job…blah blah blah” doesn’t apply here. These people are the 1% that is capable of succeeding (I use this term LIGHTLY for Cashner). They don’t follow the rules of “your” work place.
He never said, “beard or i retire from MLB”. He said he’d consider it in his decision. Never “beard before money, or beard before anything”, Just that he’d think about it.
People need to worry more about their own sh**
Deke
I think most Giants fans are well over Casilla as a closer. Sounds like the Giants were trying to replace him before the trade deadline anyway and I don’t think there would be too many fans who would shed a tear.
For me the way he acted when Bochy pulled him that game was the nail in the coffin. That shows a sense of arrogance (which I guess closers feel they need) but more so a sense of entitlement. He has had a below average season and he needs to be humble enough to acknowledge that and accept it so he gets better. Instead of being delusional and thinking he’s the greatest.
He’s gone next year for sure.
