The Angels’ bid to put together a stadium deal in Tustin has not panned out, leading the team to resume talks with the city of Anaheim, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports. While teams like the Braves, Rangers, and D-Backs are in various stages of replacing their still-serviceable ballparks, the Halos are still playing in Angel Stadium, which opened in 1966. The current lease runs through the 2029 season, but includes a provision allowing the club to opt out before 2019. That, naturally, spurred talks of renovation work and a new agreement, with the Angels exploring alternatives when discussions didn’t proceed as hoped.
Here’s more from out west:
- Angels righty Garrett Richards could be cleared to throw next week if his check-up on Monday goes as hoped, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports. The 28-year-old is attempting to avoid Tommy John surgery despite a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He has been ramping up his workout regimen as his PRP/stem cell treatment has continued to show promise, and the next step may be to build up toward throwing and then full-blown mound work. The outlook remains uncertain, but Richards expressed loads of optimism. “I literally feel like my arm is just refreshed,” he said yesterday. “Everything feels great. My shoulder feels nice and loose. I feel zero discomfort in my arm. Nothing even close to what I was feeling when I was put on the DL.”
- Rockies first baseman Mark Reynolds left today’s action with an injury to the hamate bone in his left hand, MLB.com’s Thomas Harding reports. It has actually been a problem for some time, per the report, but Reynolds felt heightened discomfort after a swing. The expectation is that he’ll require a DL stint, though the severity isn’t yet known with an MRI scheduled for tomorrow. Colorado is already in a bit of a bind with Trevor Story likely out for the year. The team had avoided a sell-off at the trade deadline in hopes of making a post-season run, but the odds against it continue to build.
- The Mariners’ trade deadline tightrope walk has paid off thus far, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports writes. GM Jerry Dipoto ultimately settled on a few relatively modest moves to tweak the club’s roster and set of contractual obligations, but the M’s have responded by pushing to seven games over .500 — putting them right in the thick of the Wild Card hunt. The veteran executive suggested that the team looked at more significant transactions. “I’m a big fan of trying to pounce on opportunity,” he said. “We talked with a variety of clubs about acquisitions that maybe would have been more notable — I don’t want to say star quality, but more household-type names. We also talked about the possibility of moving players out who were more household names. … In the end, the best moves we could make were holding steady.”
- Meanwhile, tough-luck Mariners lefty Danny Hultzen isn’t yet ready to give up pitching, Jon Heyman of Fan Rag reports. He has undergone another shoulder procedure in hopes of making it back to the hill. The former second overall pick, now 26, threw 124 innings back in 2012 but hasn’t even cracked fifty total in the four seasons since.

Angels stadium is fantastic, just update a few things “new videoboard” and it’s one of the best.
halos101
Angel stadium might be old, but it’s still a beautiful stadium. They do a great job of keeping it in good shape

Angel stadium may be one of the oldest, but it’s a very beautiful park. they do a great job in making sure it looks great, it doesn’t look old at all

oops, sorry for repeating it lol

Always wondered how the Mariners would be if they had traded for Cozart (SS)… or had kept Mark Trumbo.

Very true! I’d say better for sure!
bigkempin
Probably not much better as Trumbo only has a .437% slugging for his career at Safeco.

Angel stadium is nice and clean but other than that it is horrible. Big obstructed views from RCF to LCF, the video board is trash, the food is stuff I could get down the street from my house, and most of all the team playing in it sucks

Threaten a move to Las Vegas. I hear it’s all the rage nowdays

if MLB gave in and allowed it the Ray’s would be happy. They would no longer be last in attendance. The 51’s have a 9,000+ seat venue that is barely more than half full. If the wait about 5-6 years though a new team will be able to build on the site of what will be a vacant NHL stadium. Sports on a regular basis just won’t work.
Ray Ray
You can’t judge MLB attendance based on AAA attendance. Going to a big league game is a destination for a lot of people. Going to a minor league game is something locals do. People are not going to drive over an hour to see a AAA game, but I (and I am sure many others) have done that regularly to see a big league game. The southeast and the west are both sadly underrepresented in the majors. Yes another NY or LA franchise would probably sell more tickets immediately, but you wouldn’t build more fans, you would just convert fans of other teams or worse be considered the “little brother” in the town like the Angels or the White Sox.

The SE isn’t a baseball area. If it’s not college football or NFL, it doesn’t matter.

I judge it on having lived there and watched team after team fail. I judge it on the fact that people go to LV foe one thing…to gamble. A large # of people that work in Vegas work the evenings when casinos, clubs, restaurants and other venues are full. Gambling fuels Vegas. In a town where there are poker machines in every 7-11 and grocery store major pro sports will fail. There isn’t the interest to support a team despite what the Goodman’s have said through the years.
angelsinthetroutfield
I was being a little facetious but I really think LV could support a MLB franchise. Gambling is on a downward trend and entertainment is on the rise in Vegas. Locals are way less involved with gaming (from a consumer standpoint) that many think.
angelsinthetroutfield
I have no doubt they could generate good attendance numbers but I’m not sure they’d have a strong “home crowd”. With the number of tourists in the City the team may suffer from similar issues as Arizona and Tampa

The Boulder Strip, Station Casinos, The Orleans, Rio, may of the Boyd properties all are fueled by locals and most market them selves for locals. They are in fact referred to as “local’s casinos”. The Boulder Strip alone did over $784M last year. Every local’s bar (and there are thousands), every convenience store, grocery store and many other businesses that cater to residents all have slot areas. Ray Ray said that many people drive over an hour to see MLB games…I agree., but look at a map…there is not that big a population within an hour. Even 2 hours. There are a little over 1m people in LV, Henderson and North LV and after living there a decade and a half, having family and friends that still lives there a MLB team in Vegas would be jealous of 16,000 the rays draw.
Locals are way more involved with gaming (from a consumer standpoint) that many think and without local support…….

How can Richards pitch with a partially torn UCL, it has to hurt, hell it hurts to think about. He’s just delaying the inevitable

Just give Angels Stadium a TJS and one year of recovery time and it should be back to full strength for 2018.

Lol

Even if angel stadium is still nice, at least there’s is old enough to be replaced, which I don’t think should. Texas or Arizona replacing there’s is just dumb and a waste of money.

The Rangers stadium issue is a political one more than anything else. If Arlington gives them a new stadium now before the lease ends then Dallas can’t swoop in an take the team there. That and a roof with A/C finally for the summer heat.
frg214
Heat index was getting close to 110 degrees outside for yesterday’s day game with the Rockies. There was hardly anyone in the outfield seats. I think we can all agree no one wants to sit in near 110 degree heat 9 innings not to mention the players. And they say it would cost near as much to design a roof to place on top of the current ballpark so might as well get a new stadium haha.
bradthebluefish
New Rule: No more new stadiums until the A’s have their own stadium. Period.
robidebd
So we r Never going to build a New stadium in baseball??! LOL
