We continue our series of roundups of this week’s trade activity with the NL West.
- The Diamondbacks traded veteran reliever Tyler Clippard to the Yankees for righty Vicente Campos. They also attempted to deal reliever Daniel Hudson, but were not able to complete a trade.
- The Rockies did not make any significant moves, notably holding onto Carlos Gonzalez, Charlie Blackmon and Boone Logan.
- The Dodgers struck a significant deal with Oakland, getting lefty Rich Hill and outfielder Josh Reddick for young righties Grant Holmes, Frankie Montas and Jharel Cotton. They also picked up Jesse Chavez from Toronto for fellow righty Mike Bolsinger, and they acquired reliever Josh Fields from Houston for young first baseman Yordan Alvarez.
- The Padres sent Matt Kemp to Atlanta for Hector Olivera in an exchange of bad contracts, then quickly designated Olivera for assignment. They also sent pitchers Andrew Cashner, Colin Rea and Tayron Guerrero to Miami for pitcher Jarred Cosart, injured hurler Carter Capps, first base prospect Josh Naylor and minor league pitcher Luis Castillo, although they sent Castillo back to Miami in exchange for Rea after Rea had an elbow injury. Finally, they sent outfielder Melvin Upton to Toronto for pitcher Hansel Rodriguez and cash.
- The Giants got young starter Matt Moore from Tampa Bay in exchange for third baseman Matt Duffy and prospects Lucius Fox and Michael Santos. They also picked up lefty reliever Will Smith from Milwaukee for catcher Andrew Susac and pitching prospect Phil Bickford. Finally, they snagged infielder Eduardo Nunez from Minnesota, giving up lefty Adalberto Mejia.

And…. Derek Norris is still a San Diego Padre. Sigh
petersdylan36
I’m surprised no bites. Brewers, Braves, and Indians, maybe Mets all could have used him
anonymoususer
Brewers have Susac now
Matt Galvin
Could still be moved in August along with Jay,Solarte,Bullpen pieces.
Rockies could still move guys this month if fall back. Diamondbacks could move Hudson and so on.
Dodgers could try and add another Starter.
The Padres could have just send another SP to Marlins.

Yeah, I think Jay will be dealt through waivers. I’m not to sure about Norris or any of the relievers though however mainly because of the contracts. Jay is a free agent in 2 months so keeping him serves no purpose to let him just walk for free. Buchter, Hand, Maurer & Norris all have team friendly contracts and years left of control.
Maybe Preller waits to see who gobbles up Weiters & Ramos when free agency begins and then sells off Norris to the highest bidder, hoping that he does regain some value throughout the rest of this season.
bbatardo
Norris killed his value in July with his slump on top of hitting around .200 most of the year.
Raptors Rampage
Could trade him over the winter.

Norris still a Padre, that is “mind blowing” but then again so is Colin Rea being a Padre. LMBO
I mean wow San Diego is just something to talk about so much drama and bad contracts.
Raptors Rampage
Bad contracts?
They dumped kemps contract completely, thanks braves
If shields opts out they arent responsible for money owed.
And bj turned his bad contract into an asset.
Preller got rid of an old bad contract in gyorko. Only being responsible for 5 million.
Yeah, the teams only bad contract long term is paying olivera thats about it LOL. Its like you knew none of this.
Upton is off the books in 2017.

Colorado’s inactivity doesn’t make much sense. They missed a great chance to stock the farm and give themselves actual hope of competing in the future.
Seems like the front office continues their blind faith strategy.

The Rox are in limbo aren’t they, not all in to win but not really selling either. The Rox are just being……like .500 ball.
Ray Ray
After the past few years, I would be thrilled with an 81-81 record for the Rox this year. Yeah selling could have gotten a higher draft pick, but they have plenty of high draft picks, it’s time to win. Or at the very least it is time to not lose.
Cam
Is there much point in an 81-81 season if that’s the ceiling for this team? That’s still playing golf instead of postseason baseball.
I would like to think most fans would take 2 or 3 bad years for a proper shot at building a team capable of being above .500, over .500 for a couple of years and never being any better.
The Cubs and Astros set the blueprint for rebuilding, and the Cubs especially are in a great position for many, many years because of it.
The Rockies have been stuck in mediocrity for years, and refuse to bite the bullet and change it. What’s the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing but expecting a different result?
Each to their own, though.
Ray Ray
Yes there is a point. Not everyone wants to be the worst team in MLB. Not everyone gets to make the playoffs, that’s a fact that will never change. But yes there is a big point to getting the Rockies playing some meaningful games in September. Other than CarGo and Jorge de la Rosa, there is no one on the team that has actually experienced a winning Colorado season. If they get to the last three game series at like 79-80, I really want to see the guys fighting for a winning record rather than just playing out the string because it doesn’t matter anyway. Besides 81-81 is not the ceiling for this team. It is the starting point. The majority of the Rockies team is very young and need to learn to win.
The Cubs and Astros set A blueprint, not THE blueprint. There are many ways to build a successful team. The Giants didn’t follow that strategy. Neither did the Blue Jays. Neither did the Rangers. Neither did the Cardinals.
And BTW, I took 2-3 bad years as a Rockies fan. Actually I have taken 17 bad years since I started following the Rox in 1993. However, it has been 5 bad years in a row now. They traded Ubaldo. They busted almost everything up in the 2011-12 offseason trading Iannetta, Smith, Stewart, Street and more from the playoff teams. They traded Tulo last year. Where do see refusing to change? I see not doing a Marlins style fire sale as a good thing.
But like you said, to each their own.
Ray Ray
It makes perfect sense. They have gotten back in the race after a really good two week run against some bad teams and the Mets. This week brings two series which will define the Rockies 2016 season, the Dodgers and the Marlins, the two teams directly in front of them in the WC race. If they can go 4-2 or even 5-1, they have a shot this year. If they don’t, then they don’t. I am just happy that the Rox are making an attempt at making the playoffs without going all in. They are not good enough for a major buying spree, that would be reckless. However, they are playing well enough for a hold. Not every team needs to be buyers or sellers. There is the third option of holding, which more teams should probably do.
chuckn9ne
Actually the Padres sent Melvin upton and cash for hansel Rodriguez

From a Dodgers fan perspective the Giants getting Moore hurts from two perspectives – first it helps the Giants and second Moore was someone that the Dodgers wanted. Somewhat pleased with the Dodgers trades but wish someone would have bit on Puig
pustule bosey
From a giants fan perspective, these moves were helpful in the short term but it looks like the fo was thinking more about the future since the pitching staff – both the pen and rotation are in for some major losses in the next couple of years and the prospects spent now prevents overpay on the books come free agency in the next couple of years
slogar1
The giants did well, addressing their need for another quality starter, LH reliever, and an all around IF in Nunez. All 3 are above average, controllable, and in their prime while SF didn’t give up alot (IMO). Nunez made Duffy expendible and now Christian Arroyo has a clearer path to the majors. Susac was expendible as Brown has done a great job as backup to Posey but the Giants have a catcher in the minors people are raving about and deemed untouchable. The loss of Bickford hurts but they still have Beede, Crick, Blach, etc. We’ll see how the losses of Mejia & Bickford play out but these moves made the Giants a very solid team, well done!
eellis2
mlbtr, you linked the wrong matt duffy! You have the one that used to be with Astros, not Giants!
iamandygibb
Cash went to the Jays in Melvin Upton Jr. trade.
