Veteran Athletics outfielder Coco Crisp says that he believes the team is artificially holding down his playing time to prevent his option from vesting, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Crisp says that he’s “extremely hurt” by the team’s “shady” handling of the situation. While GM David Forst and manager Bob Melvin have stated that Crisp is sitting against lefties to afford younger players more exposure, he sees more to it — particularly since he is not being used much off the bench. Crisp’s $13MM option vests at 130 games played; entering today’s action, he had appeared in 93 contests, meaning he’d need to take the field for most of the club’s remaining 43 games to reach the threshold. “I’m healthy, I’m playing hard and this has surprised me,” said Crisp, who noted that he has loved playing in Oakland. “This calls their integrity into question, it’s very sad.” The 36-year-old, who owns a .239/.307/.410 slash on the year, indicated that he may not be interested in playing after this season, adding: “The business side sure makes it hard to love the game, and I’ve loved the game since I was six years old.”
Here’s more from out west:
- The Padres seemingly intend to give just-acquired infielder Luis Sardinas a good run late this year, as Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets. Though he hasn’t hit much at Triple-A or the majors thus far in 2016, Sardinas has a solid pedigree — as club GM A.J. Preller well knows having signed him as an amateur. “I don’t think we [acquired] him to relegate him to Triple-A the rest of the year,” said manager Andy Green.
- One Padres player who has thrived upon receiving an opportunity is 26-year-old outfielder Alex Dickerson, who entered the day with a .280/.319/.528 slash and seven home runs over 135 plate appearances. Lin writes that there’s more concern over Dickerson’s glove than his bat, though Green also suggests he has been better than the defensive metrics might suggest. Still, the exciting element of Dickerson’s game is his work on offense. “The way he sees the ball, his plate discipline, he’s a guy that could easily have a 10 percent walk rate to go along with the way he hits, the power numbers he puts up,” said Green. “I’m very pleased with what he’s shown early in his major league career and have every expectation he’ll keep improving.”
- It was reported recently that Major League Baseball is looking into the Padres’ provision of medical information in a pair of recent trades. The initial review, at least, is expected to wrap up this week, Lin tweets. It remains largely unclear whether there’s any possibility of punitive measures being taken against the team, or whether the review is focused more on arriving at a standard approach to swapping health documents for all teams.
- Mariners lefty James Paxton has been scratched from his next scheduled start, as Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports, and could be headed to the DL. Though Paxton wants to pitch, and the team no doubt wants to give him the ball, manager Scott Servais says that the prudent course is further rest. Forearm soreness is almost always scary, but in this case it resulted not from a throwing injury but a line drive. Regardless, Seattle will hope to get the southpaw back in action as soon as reasonably possible. The 27-year-old appears to be harnessing his talent at an opportune time for a Mariners team that is trying to make a run at a Wild Card, if not the AL West title. Over his 81 2/3 innings on the year, Paxton owns a 3.53 ERA with 8.0 K/9 against 2.0 BB/9, and he has been even better of late.

Paxton is a tough loss for the Mariners but I must admit that it will be good to keep them at bay in the West. Hope it’s nothing too scary.
whereslou
He got hit in the elbow with a line drive last week. Looked ugly at the time but they said was just a bruise afterwards. I am sure they don’t want it messing up his mechanics and causing something worse so they are sitting him until he is 100%.
davidcoonce74
I live in Bloomington, where Dickerson played in college, so I got to see him a lot. He has a very nice swing, but probably not the athleticism to play in the outfield. But the Padres should run him out there just to see; they’re a 95-loss team anyway so no harm.
Grey Suit
Might make sense to put Myers in LF and play Dickerson at 1B.
scogan
Why displace your best player who has said that 1B is his favorite position?
Atlanta Braves Fan 4 Life
You know Crisp, as a 36 year old not really producing, it’s difficult to disagree with the A’s. Younger players getting a chance to prove themselves and team saves a few dollars.
James7430
Yeah, it’s hard to be legitimately offended when you’re hitting a blistering .239 on the year. Saying you’re “trying hard” is a ridiculous excuse IMO. I’ll gladly sign a contract for a cool $5 mil and can guarantee I’ll “try hard.” Unfortunately for me, that won’t cut it and it shouldn’t for Coco. As sad as it may be, the run is over and you played a game (professionally) for 18 years. Congrats for doing something millions want to do but most never achieve. Now time to move on and enjoy life post-baseball.
stymeedone
When you are hitting like a utility infielder, you shouldn’t be saying a whole lot about your playing time.
josc2
^^ hasn’t exactly earned playing time with his performance
Matt St.
It’s must be really hard for players to admit to themselves that they no longer have what it takes to play pro ball. Most of them must be like Crisp who have never done anything else in their lives.
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
He seems like a decent human… Still, it IS a business at the floor of it all and he has to know that. “The 36-year-old, who owns a .239/.307/.410 slash on the year, indicated that he may not be interested in playing after this season…” Regrettably for him, that may be less his choice than MLB’s… Those numbers just won’t warrant a $13 million option.
arc89
Last year he was fine cashing those same checks playing in only 44 games. So Coco it goes both ways.

Dickerson is the first of what should be an impressive young crop of position players the Padres will be graduating from AAA El Paso. They have nothing close in terms of pitching but next years lineup could be very intriguing.
1. CF- Manuel Margot
2. 1B- Wil Myers
3. 3B- Yangervis Solarte
4. RF- Hunter Renfroe
5. LF- Alex Dickerson
6. C- Austin Hedges
7. 2B- Ryan Schimpf/Carlos Asuaje
8. SS- Luis Sardinas
9. Pitchers spot
Jankowski -4th OF, speed off bench. + defender
Spangenberg -Utl, speed off bench + defender
Bethancourt – backup C
Blash – Young Power bat off the bench.
davidcoonce74
Blash, Dickerson, Solarte and Schimpf aren’t young – each is way closer to 30 than 20.
A'sfaninUK
Yeah, thats still a very last place looking team, but then again I’m not entirely sure Padres homers even know what good baseball players look like anymore.
One Fan
I agree the Padre homers would not know what a good baseball team looks like. They will probably be excited with that new garbage lineup
A'sfaninUK
“could be very intriguing” – nope, thats what a 65 win team looks like. Just clueless. Seems like they’re just treading water until Tony Gwynn’s ghost rises from the dead and starts hitting liners everywhere.
padresad
FOH bro. Go troll some other fans of teams that aren’t among the worst, the Padres suck and we all know it. Its full tank/rebuild for the next 3 seasons.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
I agree with you that the potential 2017 lineup is probably not going to be very good. However, I know this because I like to think of myself as a common sense Padres fan. This team is bad, and they are rebuilding, so it makes sense that they won’t be going anywhere over the next few years. Maybe by 2019 or 2020, things might start changing for the better. Perhaps some of the prospects will turn out to be solid contributors at the big league level, while others will be busts. Only time will tell.
There are “homers” in every fan base, not just the Padres, because that’s just how they are structured. But there are also many other types of fans that know the reality of the state of their respective teams. When it comes to the Padres, these fans know that it’s still going to be a while before this team starts to become a significant contender.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
How is that a last place team? Every position has a good player except 2nd and SS. And Jank and Bethancourt are certainly passable as a fourth outfielder and backup catcher. The Padres won’t contend next year because of pitching. Most of their pitching help is still a few years out.
Raptors Rampage
Dickerson is 26 and blash is 27. Thats young in a baseball world considering guys typically dont hit FA till their 30s and play well into their early mid 30s.
Raptors Rampage
Id go jankowski renfoe margot outfield.
Infield id go
Solarte at 3rd if traded try bethancourt at 3rd hes got try arm try it out in spring.
Sardinas or trade dickerson in a package to acquire a young controllable ss
Asjuae or schimpf at 2nd
Myers
Hedges at catcher with bethancourt the back up.
Spangenberg the utility inf for 3rd 2nd ss.
They have micahel gettys who should be ready by 2018 and nick torres who should be ready by 2017. They have plenty of outfield depth coming up through the minors so parting with dickerson to fill a need wouldnt be the worst. Plus theyd have jankowskis speed on the bases and outfield to go with margot.
1738hotlinebling
Second Base is questionable ,
whereslou
Might as well take it slow with Paxton no need to rush him back and potentially cause more damage. He has been very good lately. Let one of the new guys take his spot I think I think it is Miranada and keep us in the game. The BP is getting healthy so 7 innings would be a plus against the Angels. Keep winning those games and make me wrong but at least so far we haven’t given up any players that will really hurt us down the road at the deadline or Aug trades.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
So is Major League Baseball going to be looking into the Marlins’ provision of medical information in the Fernando Rodney trade?
davidcoonce74
What, Paddack? I’m assuming all the medical info was provided. Otherwise we’d have heard about it by now, right?
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Haha I’m just saying you don’t see the Padres complaining about a player getting injured a few weeks after they traded for him. Pitchers get hurt. It happens. The Sox and Marlins knew that when they traded for Pom and Rea.
Preller only traded back for Rea because he never wanted to trade him in the first place and likely still thinks Rea can contribute to the team at some point down the road.
tigers1968
Coco, The Athletics are doing you a favor. You can now go on the open market in 2017 and find out what you are really worth .
A'sfaninUK
Crisp has the same neck issue as Prince Fielder, only he figured out that playing the game at 75% is keeping him healthy, unfortunately that also means he’s horrible at playing at the big league level, to the tune of a -0.4 fWAR this season.
The A’s integrity is not in question: they are rebuilding. 37 year olds do not belong on rebuilding teams. They really should just release him before that option vests.
Francisco
Oh yeah that Padres lineup next year looks like the 27 Yankees…LOL
nyy42
It’s funny how .230 hitters feel like they deserve to start every game. He should have split time most of his career anyway.
He has played 130 games in a season only 5 times in 15 seasons.
mike156
I’m usually sympathetic to players who think management is manipulating their playing or service time for financial reasons, but Crisp isn’t earning it on the field, and the team is going no-where anyway. You need to see youth out there, and no time like the present, when the games are meaningless, to find out.
SupremeZeus
Easy solution, release Covelli. He will find out real quick if he “deserves” playing time.
notagain27
Did Coco have any problems with management last year when he made 11 million for 44 games? It is a business and you shouldn’t air your dirty laundry to the media.
A'sfaninUK
THIS THIS THIS THIS
CelineDijon
Yes. This. Loved coco. Dude was fun to play and I do think gives it 110%, but the injuries have taken their role. Sort of bummed out he took this public. A’s did him solid, and up until now, everything from both sides seemed super positive.
Really surprised.
