JULY 31: The Orioles and Mariners are currently in talks regarding Miley, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
JULY 30: The Orioles are “taking a hard look” at Wade Miley, reports Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. Baltimore has been in the market for a left-handed starter for more than a month, and Miley would function as something of a buy-low candidate for GM Dan Duquette if a trade is ultimately reached.
Seattle acquired the 29-year-old Miley in an offseason trade that sent right-handed reliever Carson Smith to the Red Sox, but the southpaw hasn’t performed up to expectations in spite of the move to a larger, more pitcher-friendly setting. Miley entered the day with a 5.23 ERA, 6.3 K/9, 2.8 BB/9 and a 45.9 percent ground-ball rate. A massive uptick in his homer-to-flyball rate has been the root of Miley’s ERA spike, though it should be noted that he dominated the Cubs today, holding Chicago to just one run on one hit and a walk with nine strikeouts in seven innings to drop his ERA to 4.98. Miley, in fact, has quietly begun to right the ship after his early woes, as he’s now logged a 3.80 ERA with a 33-to-15 K/BB ratio across his past 47 1/3 innings of work (eight starts).
Adding Miley does come with modest financial risk, as he’s owed $2.1MM through season’s end plus a guaranteed $8.75MM in 2017 and at least a $500k buyout of a $12MM option for the 2018 season. Of course, if he’s able to sustain his recent run of solid results, then that price would be a relative bargain for a 30-year-old innings eater.
The Orioles have received virtually no production out of the third, fourth and fifth spots in their entirely right-handed rotation this season, so the pursuit of an arm to help support Chris Tillman, Kevin Gausman and the club’s slugging lineup and strong bullpen certainly makes sense. Miley has reportedly emerged as a semi-likely candidate to be moved, as the Mariners have been open to dealing underperforming veterans in order to swap them out for younger options with the hopes of remaining afloat in the American League playoff picture.

Gosh we are pathetic. As soon as a guy has one good start, we immediately place a call because that one good start is more than we’ve gotten from Ubaldo and Gallardo combined this season.
Michael Macaulay-Birks
I’m a Red Sox fan, and I can tell you you do not want him…..I don’t think pathetic is the right word, maybe a little desperate for pitching just like the rest of us
gomerhodge71
Running joke in my area is that, even with Carson Smith out for at least year, Boston got the better of the deal. Miley is little more than a southpaw Clay Buchholz.
dwilson10
This could be a good pickup. He looked excellent against one of the best offensive teams in baseball today. He is used to the AL East since he pitched with Boston and could help the O’s struggling rotation.
rivera42
Oh please. Miley is a fifth starter at best. As far as him looking excellent against the Cubs, as that saying goes…”Even a broken clock is right twice a day”.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Samardzija is a 5th starter and the giants have him 90 mil dollars. That’s literally like what the Miami heat did with Chris Bosh. Gave way too much to an average player. Guarantee shark doesn’t finish that contract with the giants.
rivera42
I don’t disagree, but what’s your point? That at least Miley is not making too much? Lol, that’s true…It’s pretty much the only positive you can say about him.
User 4245925809
Agree. Think Miley was a decent starter at both Arizona and Boston as well and in small parks to boot, what went wrong in Seattle? Who knows, but as expensive as it is to acquire SP’s right now, if it’s cheap enough prospect wise, Duquette is the man to find a bargain and believe Miley could be another guy and one who needs out of Seattle, tho I do like both teams.
B-Strong
Miley was not decent in Boston. At least not for a long while. Him and Masterson were almost a sure thing for 5 runs by the 5th every time out. I was so glad the Sox moved him and even with Smith having had to have season ending surgery, i still think we made out. Miley is not a good pitcher imo.

Wade Miley led the 2015 Red Sox in starts, innings and wins despite his 4.46 ERA.
ZiPS, Steamers and FanGraphs Depth Charts project Miley with 0.6 to 0.7 fWAR over his final 11 starts.
Miley is no ace but the lefthander represents value.
Cam
The fact that he led the team in wins despite the bloated ERA, is all you need to know about the value of pitcher wins
BoldyMinnesota
This is an “excellent pickup” only because one of ubaldo, gallardo, Wilson or wright will be dfa’d for him. It’s litterally replacing trash with trash
dorfmac
Exactly. At least Wright and Wilson are young and have some upside remaining. Most important – they’re free. Duquette has traded a few decent prospects for rentals, namely ERod and Davies. I’d hate to give up another one for a marginal upgrade at best.
MatthewBaltimore23
Me too.
rivera42
Is anybody surprised that Miley is having a bad year? Bad pitcher is bad.
TD272
Might as well save whatever prospect it would take to get him. He isn’t going to make a difference, especially with the offense looking like it has. O’s have been doing it with smoke and mirrors and their weaknesses have caught up to them,.
24TheKid
Never would this ever happen, but might as well because I’m bored, Seattle trades, Miley, Hernandez, Marte, Oneil and or Gohara for Machado and Bundy.
dorfmac
Yeah, you’re right with the first line. I can see the O’s trading Machado, but not for another season or two.
Young Angelos has already hinted that there’s a chance he won’t be signed long-term. I feel like any owner who has the intention of keeping a young stud – even at the expense of a $300million contract – would not be making these insinuations.
In the meantime, the Os will squeeze whatever they can out of Machado and our fans will deal with it when the Angelos family pulls a classic Angelos move and low-balls him, forcing him to leave.
BoldyMinnesota
In true oriole fashion, they’ll announce an 8 year extension with machado, only to back out of it a day later due to his medical in the biggest troll job of MLB history
Seattlehof24
We already have a really good 3rd baseman… and I think Seattle fans would tar and feather Dipoto if King Felix were traded.
ayrbhoy
Exactly! Trade Felix after he signs consecutive (very) team friendly contract extensions- ain’t going to happen! Jerry has proved he’s creative and somewhat ruthless in his FO decisions but he’d be daft to trade the face of this franchise. Felix has endured so many seasons with little or zero run support the M’s from office owes him a chance (w Seattle) at the post-season.

I was getting pissed wade Miley was throwing a perfect game vs the cubs. He’s terrible. Cubs have never been able to hit bad pitching. And they lost on top of it. Chapman showed hes not unhittable giving up 3 hits and 3 runs.
bigdog330 2
Chapman was far from perfect today, but he didn’t give up 3 hits or 3 runs. He only pitched to two batters. He gave up a big two run double to Martin (Arrieta walks), but that was the only hit off of him. He did have a high throw to 3rd and a wild pitch that let his buddy, Martin score a run against him.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
They weren’t his runs but he still allowed them to score his job was to protect the lead he failed. He’ll get the day off tomorrow. Personally I think Rondon and Chapman should share the closer role. Rondon can’t pitch every day neither can Chapman. 2-3 in a row max. If one has a day off the other one closes.

Compared to Ubaldo & Gallardo, Miley would look like Randy Johnson next to those 2.
whereslou
All you guys taking bad about Miley stop it. He is the pitcher you saw today and the O’s can have him for a decent OF prospect. Besides don’t you feel you owe us a little for the Bedard Jones Tillman and the other pitcher that went to the AS game the next year whose name escapes me right now? Come on that deal alone you should give us a top 20 prospect just out of decency. I know Miley sucks but our last 2 GMs have made trades like that throw us a bone. Who knows maybe he might throw a couple more gems like today for you.
dmv2mbsc
FULL DISCLOSRE: I’m a die hard O’s fan….I love machado’s game both off. and def. He’s one of the 5 best pos. players in the game today. Balt has to let trade him. He’s eventually going to command a kings ransom. With his history of knee problems, prob not a prudent long-term signing. Swap him with Sale, straight up, and let’s try to do it now. ’83 was forever ago.
greenmonsternews
After he pitched a great game- who wouldn’t want him?

I’m not sure why so many O’s fans are down on Miley. Over the past eight starts, he’s had a 3.80 ERA including QSs against CHC and TOR. He held his own pitching for BOS last year. Sure, there are also drawbacks (but given the quality of the O’s farm system, we aren’t getting a stud so we have to temper expectations) – his FB velocity has declined from 90.9 mph in 2015 ro 90.4 mph in 2016, though his wFB has been better this year per fangraphs. Saber doesn’t like him as much due to below average k/bb and HR/FB, but he’s had success with a similar k/bb rate in the past and his HR/FB is a career high, and some regression to the mean is expected. Not to mention he’s under control for two more years and given the dearth of quality SP on the FA market this upcoming offseason, Miley could prove to be a much better value than anything out there. .
