Twins upper management told Terry Ryan a month ago that he wouldn’t be retained beyond the present season, and allowed him to choose his own method of departure, Phil Mackey of 1500 ESPN reports (links to Twitter). Ryan, obviously, asked to be let go rather than hanging on the rest of the way, as reflected in today’s announcement. Looking ahead, Minnesota intends to look outside the organization for a permanent replacement, but didn’t commit to that route. Notably, owner Jim Pohlad said that the new GM will not have a chance to replace skipper Paul Molitor.
Here’s more from Minnesota and the rest of the American League:
- The Twins have engaged in talks with the Red Sox, with Boston keeping an eye on righty Ervin Santana, according to Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press. But the teams do not appear to be lining up at the moment. Meanwhile, Minnesota still needs to decide if it wants to keep useful veterans around its talented but not fully realized core, and Berardino wonders whether it will end up making sense to part with the final two years of Santana’s deal now that he’s pitching fairly well.
- One factor in the Twins’ decisionmaking will obviously be related to the financial ramifications of any deals, but now-acting GM Rob Antony says that there isn’t a mandate to trim payroll. As Berardino tweets, Antony says that the organization doesn’t “have financial problems” in need of resolution at the deadline.
- Despite losing Yan Gomes for a lengthy stretch, the Indians aren’t prioritizing the addition of a backstop, per Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). The club is relatively bullish on both Roberto Perez and Chris Gimenez, it seems. Presumably, that assessment is also informed by the club’s view on other needs.
- Outfield would certainly be one area where the Indians could stand to improve, but relief pitching is likely the most pressing. Per Rosenthal (Twitter links), Cleveland is focused on adding a lefty to the team’s right-handed-heavy pen mix. Andrew Miller of the Yankees is “probably” at the top of the club’s wish list, says Rosenthal, though you could certainly say the same of many other organizations that are looking for relief upgrades.
- Whether the Yankees shop Miller or fellow power lefty Aroldis Chapman remains to be seen, but it’s a fait accompli in the view of Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News. He argues that the club shouldn’t stop at dealing away pending free agents, but should be willing to deal most any players who draw interest — with Miller among the possible exceptions. Feinsand also notes that New York is taking a close look at the Indians’ Triple-A affiliate.
- Even if he’s traded away, Chapman says that he’d remain interested in re-uniting with the Yankees as a free agent, Feinsand tweets. “I would love to come back and be part of the team again,” said the fireballing southpaw, who matched his own record tonight by launching a ridiculous 105.1 mph heater.
- The Angels announced that catcher Geovany Soto is headed to the 15-day DL with left knee inflammation. That seems to take him off the table for pre-deadline dealing, though Soto could certainly end up being dealt in the revocable waiver trade period. Los Angeles selected the contract of Juan Graterol to take his place on the active roster. The 27-year-old will receive his first major league opportunity after opening the year with a .292/.331/.357 slash in his first full year at the Triple-A level.
- Astros GM Jeff Luhnow says that he expects to be busy over the coming weeks, as MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart writes. But that doesn’t mean the club will be pushing the action; Luhnow says “there’s no real sense of urgency on our part necessarily.” Rather, he explained, “as teams pick up the pace, we’re certainly going to be involved in the conversations.” It’s possible to imagine Houston targeting a starter, as McTaggart notes, but Luhnow says that he’d only be interested in a certain kind of arm. The ’Stros would be looking at starters who are not only healthy and effective at present, but who are capable of slotting into the team’s hopeful post-season rotation.

I know the guys are good but by the time the east coast media gets done hyping up Chapman and Miller to every team the Yankees will end up asking for Trout in return
User 4245925809
Teams just don’t go out and acquire #5 starters and pay them 13.5m over a several year period like Santana, it makes no sense. the guy is not even a young and reliable innings eater any longer.
Hopefully this is just some Twins reporter inventing things and wishing to get some young kids back for a useless and over paid veteran.
Sky14
How is he not a reliable innings eater? He provides about 6 innings of league average baseball a night and has been around 200 innings a year for years now. I know that couldn’t crack the vaunted Sox rotation but it’s certainly useful particularly with a thin FA crop in the upcoming offseason.
The writer is merely mentioning that the Twins have quality young players but lack consistency in the rotation so they shouldn’t just dump one of the only reliable starters they have even if hes a bit overpaid.

Greatest response ever.

First off, you’re an idiot. Clearly you are not privy to MLB salaries. Plenty of 5th starters are making that kind of cash. Second, Santana is not a 5th starter. He is a 3rd, maybe 4th starter on most contending teams. Granted, he has fumbled out of the gate with the Twins, he’s starting to settle down. He was signed to bolster a weak and young rotation after a Twins losing season. Why would the Twins trade him now? What purpose would that serve? Zero purpose, unless you get something substantial in return. Given the Twins need pitching, I don’t envision any teams giving up pitching to get pitching. The Twins are having a bad season, but they are not a rebuilding team. They are a maturing team. At this point, they need to fill gaps next season, not fire sale and create more gaps. Do your homework holmes.

Ervin Santana to Boston
Cuevas and Merrero to Min.
He shouldn’t command anything more then that or a A-AA prospect that’s not too 25. I don’t think Santana’s worth that anymore

More then that.*

Ha, laughable. Not worth anything more? Boston’s rotation is horrible. Santana has been excellent recently. Boston should pony up.

Sorry, Santana for Betts.
TheMichigan
I hope molitor stays, he’s trying his best with a a crapshoot team, a trash bullpen that lost Cody Allen and it’s all down hill but Molitor is trying as hard as he possibly can
nattytom
They informed Molitor that he’s safe through 2017.

I think the Cards should pursue Chapman. If they get him, they have a good chance to resign him because they missed out on everything last offseason.
Sure, outsiders would hammer them for signing someone that has had domestic abuse history. But STL haters, no matter what, are going to dislike the club, which is fine.
Also I don’t think Chapman would cost as much as Miller or any other Closer on the market. I think a package of Luke Weaver/Luke Weaver and Edmond Sosa would get it done.
MB923
I’m sure the Cards (or any team for that matter) don’t mind being hammered by outsiders. Cards got hammered when they signed Peralta. And who of course can forget the hacker just sentenced.
I’m not familiar with the Cards farm, but those 2 names you mentioned are in their top 5 (Weaver 2, Sosa 5). Isn’t that a bit too much to give up for Chapman? Or is the Cardinals system poor that their 2 and 5 top prospects would be in the 10-15 or 15-20 range on most other teams ? Yeah I’m over exaggerating a bit there but I think you get my point
Seems like that proposal would be for Miller. Maybe Miller and Chapman together. Assuming the Cards have a good or at least decent farm system

As an outsider without a horse in this race, this is the type of package I would expect it to take to get Chapman. Maybe if there ends up being a bidding war, you have to throw in a sweetener like one of the low level, live arms of Alcantara or Williams, but this seems like a very fair offer.

Astros, the Braves have the Ace you are looking for plus bullpen help. Make the call….

McCullers > Teheran
Polish Hammer
Last night debacle proves to Cleveland they need a lot of help in the ‘pen and need to pursue Miller.

Astros Get: Julio Teheran, Nick Markakis, Jenkins, and Vizcaino (who is hurt now but will be back by late August)
Braves get: Springer and Bregman
MC77
Maybe the Astros would do Bregman for Teheran, but Markakis would cost the Braves a prospect to dump and Vizcaino plus Jenkins is no where near Springer’s value.

Hahahahah

Markakis has absolutely no value, throwing him into a trade lowers the cost of the trade. Example, Teheran might cost 2-3 top prospects (or one really good one like Bregman, with a couple of more pieces flying around here and there). If the Braves were intent on attaching Markakis to a Teheran deal, you’re still probably looking at 2-3 prospects, but at least one of them is going to be a low end (think 15-30 range for an organization’s rankings) prospect. The only way the Braves get a little bit of value for Markakis is if they eat his entire contract, but even then Markakis isn’t exactly a guy who is going to be a difference maker and a team could probably find another OF putting up similar numbers at a cheaper cost.
Connorsoxfan
Well if they aren’t paying Markakis anything, it doesn’t get cheaper than that…
angelsfan4life
How about Fernando Sales and Carlos Perez for Markakis? Gives the Braves a young solid catcher, who is under team control. A relief pitcher to help them get the #1 draft pick next year. And the Braves get rid of Markakis’s contract. And the Angels get the left fielder they desperately need
bobhutt99
I’m at a loss as to why strictly a business move Brian Cashman of the Yankees doesn’t lock up Chapman at $15 million per year for 3 years or $45 million. If he signs him he could get a King’s ran some from some team that desperately wants him. It would not cost the Yankees a single penny but get them blue chip players from the acquiring team. Am I missing something rather selling him off as a rent a player for a month which will get the Yankees nothing.
