Ervin Santana is the “most likely” member of the Twins to be traded this summer, per ESPN’s Jayson Stark. However, executives that have spoken to the Twins about trades tell Stark that Minnesota is willing to talk about virtually anyone on their roster. Per one exec to whom Stark spoke, the Twins are telling potential trade partners, “If you’ve got any ideas, throw them out there.” Santana is far from the only trade candidate on the Twins’ roster; Fernando Abad, Eduardo Nunez, Ricky Nolasco and Trevor Plouffe are all free agents at the end of the 2017 season, and Kurt Suzuki is set to hit the open market following the current season. MLBTR’s Jeff Todd has listed several Twins among the game’s top trade candidates over the past few weeks. As for Santana, who tossed a shutout yesterday in Oakland, he’s earning $13.5MM this year and in each of the next two seasons, so he’d be considerably more than a rental piece for an interested club. However, that remaining salary might mean that some interested parties would want the Twins to include some cash in a deal to make the trade more financially palatable.
A few more notes on the trade market…
- The Red Sox have been scouting Phillies right-hander Jeremy Hellickson lately tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports and MLB.com. Per Morosi, Hellickson is one of many options that Boston is considering as it seeks to upgrade the back of its rotation. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said tonight on the conference call to discuss the Aaron Hill trade with the media that the fourth and fifth spots of his rotation are indeed areas of focus, as ESPN Boston’s Scott Lauber writes. Hellickson could indeed fill one of those spots, as he’s delivered a solid 3.92 ERA with 7.9 K/9, 2.3 BB/9 and a 42.4 percent ground-ball rate in 105 2/3 innings. The Phillies can probably get more for Hellickson than they surrendered to acquire him at this point, and as a free agent at season’s end it seems likely that he’ll be wearing a new uniform by the time the non-waiver deadline passes.
- Infielder Yunel Escobar and left-hander Hector Santiago are getting hot at an opportune time if the Angels wish to shop them, writes MLB.com’s Alden Gonzalez. However, he also notes that it’s difficult to envision the Halos parting with either player. The Angels have a desperate need for rotation pieces in 2017 after losing Andrew Heaney to Tommy John surgery while Garrett Richards faces the possibility of the same fate. Santiago is controlled through the end of the 2017 season and doesn’t figure to be overly expensive, as he’s earning $5MM this year. Moving Escobar would mean that the Halos need to find a new third baseman for the third time in four years, Gonzalez points out, though he lists the Royals, Mets and Giants as possible suitors for the versatile infielder. Escobar, of course, comes with a questionable clubhouse reputation, but Gonzalez spoke to Santiago about Escobar’s presence in the clubhouse and received a positive review. Santiago admitted that he disliked Escobar when playing against him but enjoys his passion and enthusiasm now that they’re teammates.
- The Royals are continuing to monitor the market for starting pitchers, reports Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star. The Royals are moving Chris Young to the bullpen and have seen both Kris Medlen and Mike Minor suffer setbacks in their rehab, leaving a very thin supply of starters from which to choose. Either Dillon Gee or Brian Flynn could get a start this weekend, but Dodd cites a source in stating that the Royals have expressed some interest in the Rays’ available starting pitchers. Tampa Bay starters Jake Odorizzi and Matt Moore have each seen their names pop up in trade rumors as of late.
dylanp5030
Phillies could easily hang on to Hellickson and extend a qualifying offer to him to recoup the pick.
adyo4552
But is he in that echelon of players to warrant a sandwich pick or would it be something less appealing?
mookiessnarl
You assume he wouldn’t accept the QO. He made 7 million dollars on a one year deal last season. You think he’d turn down a one year 16 million dollar deal?
ThatGuy 2
I’d take that amount
BarrelMan
That’s pretty risky though.
dylanp5030
It’s not risky. Phillies can afford to pay him the 16 million. It really depends on how he finishes the year.
TCaron19
unless he cashes in on a career year and accepts the offer… he isn’t worth a first rounder on the fa market
olereb
Don’t think Phillies would risk extending a qualifying offer
Eric D.
Why dont the Twins trade Dozier? Plenty of teams should be looking for middle infield upgrades, and I imagine he would bring a nice return.
Sky14
Well the article mentions they are willing to talk about anybody, which would include Dozier. Most people are not going to speculate trading Dozier because he isn’t a free agent until after 2018, so there are other more obvious trade candidates.
angelsinthetroutfield
Wonder if the Angels could package Escobar and a pen arm for the recently demoted Conforto. Probably wishful thinking but maybe a pairing of Escobar and the hot hitting CJ Cron could drum interest. Mets do have a need at 1B and 3B and the trade would open up a spot for Cowart to test himself in the show. Plus the Angels would be better off with a lefty swinging 1B.
Also, I wonder if the Cards would be interested in giving up Kolten Wong for Huston Street and some $ for next yr. I’ve read rambling that they are looking for pen help and though Street hasn’t been great this yr he has a long track record of dominance. Likely another stretch though.
Vogelbach for Joe Smith? I get that the dude rakes but he was a mid 20s organizational prospect at the dawn of the season, is completely blocked in Chicago, and is truly limited to 1B/DH. It’s probably more likely that they package him for a bigger/better pen arm but Smith is another guy who has a stellar history as a late inning stopper.
halos101
Great ideas. I’m not sure if Mets would do that Escobar trade, but I think it’s worth a shot. As far as street, I agree that we should trade him. And kolten Wong is a high potential player and his contract is 5 years 25 mill if I remeber right, which is great. Good ideas, and I sure hope arte and eppler actually make some news this deadline
davidcoonce74
Actually would make some sense as the Cards had tired of Wong but he’s now replacing Matt Carpenter on the roster, so he probably won’t get moved. But Street looks cooked and he’s expensive. He’s always had a risky skillset for a closer – non-elite velocity and very injury-prone. All those injuries may have finally caught up with him.
pgmitchell
good trade do it!
Chris815
Finally some one likes one of my trades like said it help all 4 teams
WAH1447
You can trade players the same year they get drafted you just have to wait till the season is over. Man there are just so many high end prospects plus a couple 2016 all stars I see on the move in this trade. Your ideals are brilliant man maybe you should be the gm of the braves, then again maybe the owner of the braves, or maybe even the commissioner of baseball, especially after you win the Nobel peace prize and Arthur Ashe courage award nah I think you should just re create the game of baseball and start a new league I think your brilliance can do this I have total faith in you!
Sasha C. Handelman
Like the idea of sox acquiring Johnson in previous posts I’ve said he’d be a great bullpen addition with his “heavy ” sinker would be the replacement for Smith we’ve been lacking!
I don’t see sox acquiring Teheran since they most likely will not pay the price that the braves are requesting.
A trade for Johnson or Vizcanio is more likely
tc22 2
tl;dr version: the Red Sox, Indians, Rockies, and Braves (and any other interested team, really) throw all their players into a fantasy redraft and start over.
EbenezerBatflip
There is no way in hell that AJ Pierzynski is ever coming BACK to Boston. He played for us once and he was the WORST!
NEVER AGAIN!
GaylordPerry
You got that right!
HallOfFame128
That’s all you took from that nonsense? AJ peirzynski? Lmao
EbenezerBatflip
You can’t trade Groome, you can’t trade players who were just drafted. Do you even know how any of this works? Like the rules for how trades are allowed to work? Mother of god…
Chris815
They would half to be player to be name later, they can be officially traded once the season is over
Chris815
Yes I know how the rule works .Groome , Pinter, Tyler, and Abreu can be traded . They just can’t be traded during the season. They have to be player to be name later. Just like the way the Braves got Swanson . And way the national got Turner. Ok
EbenezerBatflip
I’m pretty sure the MLB updated that rule that specifically says players drafted cannot be included in trades as a PTBNL unless they are eligible to be traded at the time of the actual trade, not at the end of the year.
Anyway, your trade idea is crazy. I don’t know why you think Boston values its best prospects so little to give them away for cheap. The only way Boston ever trades Moncada, Benintendi and the entire farm is for Mike Trout and only Mike Trout.
Please, don’t be crazy. You sound like the Braves version of bigpapi4ever saying all that crazy stuff.
EbenezerBatflip
I’m just going to reply to myself, I did some digging and I was right, I remember reading this article over a year ago,
mlbtraderumors.com/2015/05/all-drafted-players-now…
“In order to prevent any further loopholes, MLB has explicitly stated that any PTBNL must be eligible to be traded at the time the trade is agreed upon. In other words, draftees cannot be included as PTBNLs between their draft and the completion of the World Series.”
So unless they changed the rule again since May 2015, I am pretty sure this is no longer allowed in trades.
shorthop
Possibly the most ridiculous trade idea I’ve seen…..ever
captaincoop17
There’s just no way this trade idea happens in real life. Too many moving parts and GMs just don’t take that risk. No point in the Braves or Rockies giving up Albies or Rodgers when both teams covet them and already have them in their plans for the near future.
R.D.
Sano and Gonsalves for Teheran and Viz. Really would help both teams especially with Grossman and Kepler playing well.
adshadbolt
U must be a braves fan to think that u can get sano for Tehran. I’m not even a twins fan either.
CoryM
As a Twins fan, no thank you. Sano has a ton of potential. I like Teheran but I will gladly keep Sano
olereb
I don’t know everything, Chris I can promise you, you will never see a trade like the one you propose
olereb
I like tc’s comment, just put all 4 teams and just let each team take a time choosing
dmoyer31
I have to say, Chris, what a pleasure it is to read your trade ideas. What a fantastically ridiculous mind you possess.
WAH1447
This is great Chris I absolutely think there is 99% chance of this trade or a trade of this caliber going through. I mean I can’t think of the last time a trade like this has gone through but man this seems to be the most realistic one. Maybe you should take over as gm for the braves and see if you can turn the team into the right direction!!!
EbenezerBatflip
People told us the same thing when we wouldn’t trade Mookie Betts for Cole Hamels. Guess what, we were RIGHT to keep MOOKIE.
Please, stop telling us its a risk to keep our very best prospects, the same prospects GMs and fans all over the MLB are desperate to try and pry away from Boston.
Prospects are a risk, yes, but not all prospects are equal. Some prospects are incredible and worth keeping because they have a very high chance to succeed.
I’m not sure why you think other teams should be so happy with Julio Teheran. Or why other teams should be so desperate to win now that they give away their future. Boston wants to win in 2016, 2017 2018 2019 2020 etc..
We aren’t just trying to win now, we are trying to win FOREVER. please, stop being so greedy.

You read them?
adshadbolt
All of these trade proposals for Tehran are ridiculous. Yes he is a solid player but he’s not the #1 or #2 people think he is. Tehran is a strong #3 but a weak #2 and I understand that people are going to say “oh look at his numbers and he’s a #1” but he is a #1 in the NL east which is one of the weakest divisions in baseball on the worst team in baseball. Tehran not a power pitcher like he was when he first came up he sits 91-93 he can touch 95 but he doesn’t do it often enough and in the AL east or NL west which is we’re all the proposals have him going he will struggle. And before people say look at his numbers against the teams in those divisions look at the lineups he faced, teams did not field their top lineups because it’s the braves and their the worst team in baseball so teams rest their guys when they play them because they think their easy to beat. So all of these trade proposals saying the Red Sox have to trade Benitendi AND Moncada for him are ridiculous at best the braves should get Devers, swihart and a prospect pitcher not named Espinosa, groome. And don’t even get me started about the CHRIS guys trades where teams swap minor league systems for this guy.
WAH1447
NL east is not the weakest division in baseball it’s probably the Al central
Priggs89
The AL Central has 4 teams that will most likely finish over .500 this year. They definitely aren’t the weakest division. They just don’t have one team that will run away from the rest. I’d argue the NL Central is weaker. Outside of the Cubs, they have 2 pretty average teams and 2 that are god awful and actively trying to lose.
Also, the NL West is awful this year outside of San Fransico and Clayton Kershaw.
olereb
Adshadbolt, you said something very important, Teheran sacrifices speed for location. When Teheran first came up he was throwing 95 plus, but the last two years he consistently throws 91-93. I don’t know how Tehran would perform in the AL east, but I hope I never find out. One reason is we know what we have with him, and if we did get two of the sox best prospects, I am sure you will agree not all turn out the way the experts expect
olereb
I also can’t believe you are a Chris hater, I think Chris is out there, I mean really out there. I guess you could call me a hater also
Sam.rhodes16
You must be joking to think you’re getting Teheran without giving up one of moncada and Benni in addition to one of espi and devers and then two guys on the level of ockimey and chavis or raudes. One top tier, one second tier, two third tier guys.
Only way a deal gets done.
chesteraarthur
Then the Braves will keep him and continue to be a miserable team for the foreseeable future.
sandiegorocker1104
I will applaud you for creativity, however from a logical and logistic stand point I don’t see this flying at all. There’s just too many moving parts IMO.
dsteig
Trade Terry Ryan. He is not a free agent. He is just stupid. Santana is our best pitcher. Pay him and keep him Ryan. The worst GM in the league Ryan is
Eric D.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it here. Sandoval and Kopech for Kemp and Pomeranz makes a whole lot of sense.
olereb
II am a Braves fan so I don’t have a dog in the race, but that is an excellent trade for both teams, just tilted a little to the Padres,

WAH1447
Thank you for saying it for the 3rd time some people on here are just so difficult and do not understand they also bash all your mega team and player trades they just don’t understand the game or the rules like you do. I think you have made vast improvements to your trade proposals and I think a deal like this will get done in the near future. Do you think the braves couple possibly pry away David Ortiz and an international pool bonus slot for the Hank Aaron statute and Hector Olivera. If not international bonus slot atleast a comp pick?
WAH1447
Chris? What type of value does the braves farm system have? Do you think we could trade our entire major league roster and flip the lower end prospects and other minor leaguers to get proven major league stars, I know this might be a stretch but I think if we can do this I think we might could possibly make a run at the NL east crown this year or maybe a wild card spot
staypuft
Seems legit.
WAH1447
This is so true that’s all the red sox care about is making sure they send big papi off the right way and will deplete the farm system and not care about the future to do it. I just think this is spot on you nailed it on the head with this trade
WAH1447
Chris?????? I need a response from you, you are ignoring me, did you like my Hank Aaron statue for big papi trade idea?!? What about trading the entire major league roster and lower end prospects for proven stars and bring up Swanson Newcomb and Albies. Can we win the east?????

I’d give Nolasco to the first team to ask about him. Maybe getting back to the NL or something would help him. He’s been better this year than in the previous few but I for one am about exhausted of him.
captaincoop17
Let’s break this bad boy down…
Boston Receives:
SP Julio Teheran
MR Jim Johnson
CF Ender Inciarte
3B Hector Olivera
C AJ Pierzynski
RF Nick Markakis
2B DJ LaMahieu
SP Jorge de la Rosa
SP Alec Grosser
C Joseph Odom
Analysis: Of everyone listed here, only Teheran and Johnson would be realistically moved. The Red Sox already have Jackie Bradley in center field, no reason to replace him with a weaker hitting Ender Inciarte. Hector Olivera is untradeable and would be a PR nightmare for the Red Sox because of the suspension he received for domestic violence. Red Sox are gonna part with two of the best catching prospects in the game for an old washed up AJ Pierzynski? Not happening. The Braves signed both Markakis and Pierzynski to lead their young team during this rebuilding transition, would be very surprising for them to trade them and disrupt the clubhouse. As for LeMahieu, why would the Rockies give up their young all-star second basemen? Where’s he gonna play in Boston with Pedroia locked up long term? De La Rosa is washed up garbage and will play out his contract in Colorado, the only place that seems to like him.
Cleveland Receives:
MR Ian Krol
RF Jeff Francoeur
RF Carlos Gonzalez
CL Jake McGee
CF Jackie Bradley
C Christian Vazquez
3B Travis Shaw
2B Daniel Castro
CF Conner Lien
LF Willie Abreu
Analysis: While the Indians could use another outfield bat, the Red Sox aren’t parting with Bradley. CarGo is a realistic option, but only at the right price. Highly doubt the Rockies move McGee after the price they paid for him last offseason. Daniel Castro is a future backup infielder at best and those are a dime a dozen. Like I said above, why would the Red Sox give up on Vazquez? Travis Shaw being dealt doesn’t make sense either, especially with Sandoval’s injury history and struggles in Boston.
Colorado Receives:
SP Mike Foltynewicz
MR Matt Marksberry
SP Williams Perez
CL Arodys Vizcaino
SP Chris Ellis
1B Sam Travis
SS Devon Marrero
SP Joe Kelly
SP Trey Ball
C Blake Swihart
CF Abraham Almonte
3B Rio Ruiz
SS Ozzie Albies
CF Andrew Benintendi
Analysis: I see a bunch of junk coated with some elite prospects. Foltynewicz, Marksberry, and Perez are all average at best. Vizcaino doesn’t make sense in Colorado when they already have McGee as well. A flip flop of Albies for Rodgers just isn’t happening, neither team is gonna give up on their guy, nor would I. Joe Kelly throws hard, that’s about it. Devon Marrero is a wizard, but can’t hit… Backup infielder, no point in giving up anything of value for that. Benintendi isn’t leaving Boston either, unless it’s for a top flight starting pitcher.
Atlanta Receives:
SP Clay Buccholz
3B Pablo Sandoval
SS Brendan Rodgers
3B Tyler Nevin
SP Riley Pint
SP Robert Tyler
SP Jason Groome
CF Clint Frazier
1B Bobby Bradley
C Fransisco Mejia
CF Brad Zimmer or 1B Will Benson
SP Justus Sheffield
2B Yoan Moncada
Analysis: I’m guessing you might be a Braves fan? They seem to be the winners of this deal with all the high upside guys in the deal. Like I said, Rodgers for Albies ain’t happening. Rodgers is the Rockies next Tulo. Groome, Pint, Tyler can’t even be traded, so we’ll ignore them. Though, if the Braves liked Groome they coulda got him with the 3rd pick in this years draft lol. Indians have no reason to part with all these top prospects for Jeff Francoeur, Ian Krol, and Daniel Castro lmao. Just like Benintendi, Moncado won’t be going anywhere unless it’s for a top flight ace, which doesn’t appear to be on the market this year.
In total, maybe just maybe, the Red Sox make a move for Teheran/Johnson. It won’t include Benintendi or Moncada, but the Red Sox do have a pitching need and would likely part with a Devers, Kopech, or Johnson. CarGo might be dealt this year too and the Rockies would get a decent package for him. Nationals, Dodgers, and yes the Indians would all make sense.
If you’re gonna make up trade ideas, think them through and don’t just trade guys to trade guys. Each team has their own view of its prospects and knows the most avoid their guys. They won’t take a risk on another organization’s prospect unless they have a good read on him and like what they see. Teams very rarely part with prospects and that’s why.
I get it, this deal would theoretically fill the Red Sox and Indians’ holes, but a deal like this has and likely never will happen. You also need to consider more than a players position and prospect ranking when coming up with deals. Team control, age, and cost are also very important things.
eturner0601
Please put this in a format that is easier to read. You continue to do this and it is very difficult to understand. Thanks.
eturner0601
Chris, I am a Braves fan, but PLEASE STOP!!
AndyM
Very creative but a large trade of that caliber just has too many variables to work. And I can’t remember a four team trade. But great ideas.
Connorsoxfan
I love how all the Braves fans leave ultimatums demanding no trade will be done with the Red Sox for Teheran that doesn’t include Moncada, Devers, Espinoza, Kopech, Chavis, etc. It’s really amusing because it’s like they have enough responsibility given to them from the Braves organization to demand certain trades.
jd396
And Red Sox fans are really easygoing?
davidcoonce74
This is fantastic. Look at all the players with zero or negative value trading hands: Pierzynski, Olivera, Sandoval, Krol, McGee (injured), Almonte, Francouer, Markakis, De La Rosa, Buchholz, Kelly, Johnson, Groome isn’t even signed yet and can’t be traded until after the season if he does sign, ditto Pint. Can’t quite imagine what Boston wants with LeMahieu. Again, though, this is amazing. a 40 player trade involving 4 teams….you don’t see that everyday…or ever.
jtm2889
Hahahaha!!! I am laughing hysterically at my house. I assume that Chris is a local troll, and for that should be applauded for his latest effort! Suggesting this ludicrous trade proposal and then setting it up in this difficult to read format is hilarious! It’s so difficult to follow the trade that I can hardly comment, but from what I did see the Red Sox would acquire Teheran and trash for Bradley Jr, Swihart, Travis, Benintendi, Moncada, Shaw, Vazquez…LOL!!! Trading their whole lineup for a SP with less than ideal splits.
Fenway North
A 4 team 40+ player trade….yep I ran the numbers this should be easy.
chesteraarthur
You should spend more time learning how to read and write and less time posting insane trade proposals.
adshadbolt
But why would they trade away all of there top prospects for other teams prospects when they don’t need to
ThePriceWasRight
in this trade though you are trading every prospect. teams will trade and I expect Boston to trade a prospect but your scenario is nuts.
lazorko
Challenge for you Chris, can you come up with a plausible 18-team, 284-player trade?
I’ll give you until Sunday.
Extra credit if you can get Kershaw, Trout, Harper, and Machado all involved.
BigPhan
How does Tehran measure up to Cole Hamels last year? Established pitcher (World Series MVP) signed to under market deal and controlled for multiple years. Phillies got nice bunch of tier two prospects; none of Texas’ top three.
Connorsoxfan
Exactly. Although you could also consider Betts and Bogaerts to be the top two even though they aren’t prospects anymore as spoofed to Moncada and Benintendi.
Connorsoxfan
Sorry, autocorrect… Apposed, not spoofed.
