The Rangers are still pushing hardest for White Sox ace Chris Sale, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports (Twitter links). Chicago is holding out with a high asking price, per the report, demanding Nomar Mazara and Joey Gallo as headliners. Presumably, the club is looking for more to go with that pair, though the full demands from the Sox remain unknown. Texas will obviously be hesitant to part with Mazara, in particular, since he’s not only an important future piece but has played a notable role on this year’s roster. On the other hand, he seems like a perfectly reasonable request; there simply aren’t very many pitchers out there that combine Sale’s track record and contract situation.
Here’s more on the market for starters:
- The Athletics and Dodgers have discussed trade scenarios involving both lefty Rich Hill and outfielder Josh Reddick, per ESPN.com’s Buster Olney. It seems that the sides have batted around concepts involving both players in a single swap, as well as scenarios involving each player separately. It’s not hard to see the interest here from a Los Angeles organization that not only desires to add a starter and a left-handed-hitting outfielder, but has exhibited more injury risk tolerance in acquiring starting pitching than any team in baseball.
- Other teams may be looking at Mariners righty Taijuan Walker, but Seattle GM Jerry Dipoto says that he’s not interested in offers, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. “We’re not currently discussing Taijuan with anybody,” said Dipoto. “He’ll stay right where he is.” Dipoto says that the same holds with regard to lefty James Paxton, as SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo tweets.
- At this point, the Twins would need to be “overwhelmed” to deal away righty Ervin Santana, according to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag (via Twitter). Minnesota is still said to be open to dealing relief assets, but apparently is rather committed to keeping the veteran righty in its rotation over the final two years of his contract.
- While the Blue Jays’ tough call on whether to keep Aaron Sanchez in the rotation, or instead to move him to the pen to limit his innings, has long been building as an important decision. ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark takes a look at the subject with the trade deadline seemingly forcing the issue. While GM Ross Atkins says the club won’t let Sanchez’s status impact its plans, and stresses that the organization is looking at far more than a simple innings tally, Stark reports that rival executives see Toronto as an aggressive pursuer of starters. He suggests that Jeremy Hellickson could make a nice target as a back-of-the-staff rental that shouldn’t cost too much.
- Before striking a deal this morning for two starters, the Marlins tried to work something out with the pitching-rich Rays, according to multiple reports. Per Stark (Twitter links), the sides weren’t seeing eye to eye on Miami’s interest in Jake Odorizzi and Matt Moore. One source suggests that Tampa Bay wanted Christian Yelich and J.T. Realmuto — which would obviously be a non-starter — while another suggests it never got that specific, with Tampa Bay simply not interested in the Marlins’ farm.
- Moore seems now to be the Rays starter who is most likely to be traded, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter). Always regarded as a highly-talented pitcher, Moore has looked more like his pre-Tommy John self of late. His last poor outing came on June 24th, leaving him with a 5.04 ERA to that point on the year. Since that time, over seven starts, Moore has allowed just nine earned runs in 40 2/3 innings. He only has a 25: 14 K/BB ratio in that span, which isn’t all that exciting, and doesn’t have a velocity bump or increasing whiff rate to support the improved results,
- The Mets have chatted with the Pirates about a possible Jon Niese return, SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo tweets. New York has previously been suggested to have some interest in the lefty, who was dealt from New York to Pittsburgh over the winter. As before, though, the Mets don’t appear to be prioritizing starting pitching, given that the club has reasonable back-of-the-rotation options at hand with Zack Wheeler still working toward a return
batman
Walker for Niese? Lol
joew
shhh.. they might do it.. .217/.303/.296 slash line since june first..
shame we dont’ have a place for him now anyway :-/
1tav
They should trade Niese for Bastardo. The money fits and both have had more success with their former teams.
BucSox
The Niese to the Mets conversation probably went:
Pirates – You guys want Niese back?
Mets – Not really but what would it take?
Pirates – Um do you have an extra stapler? I lost mine.
Mets – 3 Paperclips is our counter.
Pirates – We will take it. (Hangs up) Suckers.
PhilliesFan012
Yelich and relamuto seems very unrealistic for ether of those rays starters
karnij
That’s way to much to give the Sox for Sale. This the most i would go for.
Rangers get:
Chris Sale
Nate Jones
White Sox get:
Lewis Brinson (#2 Rangers Top Prospect)
Luis Ortiz (#4 Rangers Top Prospect)
Dillon Tate (#3 Rangers Top Prospect)
Jurickson Profar
Ryan Rua
Steven P.
you’re joking if you think the rangers will get sale and not include Gallo or mazara at an absolute minimum
metseventually 2
I’d rather use guys like Verrett, Gilmartin and Ynoa than Jon Niese.
ExileInLA 2
Gilmartin is on the DL in AAA…but that probably doesn’t change your opinion!
ImDaBaron
I think Daniels will cave to Rick Hahn’s demands. Only thing is they cant stop at Sale. They need lineup help if they trade Mazara.
karnij
If he does pull the trigger on that trade, then I won’t ever have his back again.
RunDMC
They don’t have anyone to fill-in the short-term if Lewis Brinson isn’t ready? Mazara went cold until recently, and only hits southpaws moderately-well, certainly compensating with almost a .300 AVG vs. RHP.
ImDaBaron
They really dont…even though the White Sox wouldnt want both anyway they cant trade Profar and Gallo.
twrimmer21
I don’t know…he didn’t budge on not including Gallo in the Hamels trade last year, and he got Jake Diekman in the deal. He could probably still come up with a good haul of solid prospects without including Mazara. Pretty crafty that way.
bsteady powers
Add Melky
karnij
That’s the most i’d give up for Sale.
Rangers get:
Chris Sale
Nate Jones
White Sox get:
Lewis Brinson (#2 Rangers Top Prospect)
Luis Ortiz (#4 Rangers Top Prospect)
Dillon Tate (#3 Rangers Top Prospect)
Jurickson Profar
Ryan Rua
chound
lol Twins. “Overwhelmed”… lol
bravesred 2
I’m with you on that.
RunDMC
That gave me a chuckle as well. If you can get a stiff breeze back unloading Santana’s deal, do it. Maybe it’s time for Berrios once again.
Francys01
The Rangers should not include Mazara in a trade for Sale. I believe that if the Rangers offer Profar, Gallo and other prospects it would be okay. But, Mazara has played super well with an average of 300 to be traded ,please no. Rangers should look for other options but never trade Mazara, he can be the right fielder for years to come or can play in any other position in the outfield.
ImDaBaron
White Sox wouldnt accept that. Profar’s deal is up in 3 years.
madmanTX
So Sox wouldn’t want him unless he was what? 10 years away from free agency?
ImDaBaron
Mazara is what 6 years away? That’ll be fine. It’s about the long term future if they trade Sale.
chound
They absolutely shouldn’t. Lots and lots of other options to make that deal a steal for the WSox. Make no mistake though, the Rangers absolutely SHOULD trade for Sale.
Overbrook
Profar and GAllo isn’t close to enough. Frankly Gallo and Mazara is questionable as well, and would have to include a couple of other strong ones.
madmanTX
It probably would be a 4 for 1 swap with 2 headliners and 2 AA guys. That’s a good haul for a guy who is at odds with his club’s management everyday.
hojostache
I think this is the most reasonable framework, though I’m not sure Sale v. Management is a huge concern right now. Clubs deal with day to day drama with players, this one just came out. If there was a scorched earth scenario (Sprewell choking his coach), then it’d be a different story.
comebacktrail28
lol
Thronson5
If I was the Dodgers I would stay away from both of those guys. Last thing we need is more players on the DL. These guys both seem to be injury prone. Need to get Jay Bruce and a starter but only if it’s a top of the line starter.
baseball lifer
Sale and Duke for Odor, Gallo, Luis Ortiz, Ryan Cordell, and Jario Beras.
madmanTX
How did Odor get into this? Sub Elvis Andrus for Odor and maybe.
baseball lifer
Odor has more control than Profar… Not to mention Odor is a bit more established than Profar is at this point (due to Profar’s health). It also creates a every day position for Odor at 2B.
Nobody wants Elvis with that contact – Elvis has no real value outside of what he brings to the Rangers.
Aflurry88
First off, Odor will not be traded during the season if at all. Secondly, the Rangers would not in any way shape or form trade both their future first base prospects (Cordell and Gallo) for a Sale. Honestly Profar, Gallo, Tate, and like 2 A ball players should be enough to get it done because that’s probably the best the white sox are gonna get from any team.
TennVol
Toronto skipper John Gibbons reported to have confirmed that the Jays are heavily in on Rich Hill per Sportsnet.
baumer16
Obviously a lot depends on the secondary pieces but I would do Gallo and Mazara for Sale in a second if I was the Rangers.
knolln
awful lot of people willing for the rangers to cast two pre arb 6’5 mash monsters away for one arm. i’m trading neither and getting moore or odorizzi, maybe even 1 in an archer deal. I wouldn’t approach that price for sale. that could be a cheap 70 homers for years. not to mention the rangers lineup would be horrible instantly if you trade both.
baumer16
A cheap 70 hr’s huh? Just like that. The expectations of prospects who have never played a full single season in the bigs is truly baffling to me. Listen prospects are great no question but the fact that Rangers fans wouldn’t trade those two guys for Chris freaking Sale is insane to me. What has Gallo proven so far? Almost nothing, he has probably one of the biggest bust potentials of any of the top prospects. And I like Gallo. Mazara started off hot but cooled down considerably. He should be good too in the future but I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to trade him and some other guys for Chris Sale.
Also how much do you think it would cost to get Moore and Odorizzi? The answer is probably Profar plus. So you would do that before giving up Mazara and Gallo for Sale? Makes no sense to me but whatever.
Any pitcher you get before the deadline you’re most likely going to overpay for. So would you rather overpay for Chris Sale or Matt Moore is what it comes down to for me.
knolln
yes I do profar + for one of moore/odorizzi. . gallo is huge bust potential definitely correct. mazara has high potential and i’d say a very high floor. I would never deal a potential middle of the lineup that can potentially play 3rd and RF reasonably for 6 years. position player over the arm every time. and that’s still not addressing what the rangers lineup looks like without gallo and mazara. beltre, desmond, and pray choo comes back or moreland doesn’t disappear. that’s not close to playoff caliber. but whatever. I think its an asinine starting point in trade discussions. think it makes them a couple feet better in 2016 and miles worse in the long run. 3 starter, bullpen arm, call it a day.
baumer16
Look at what you’re saying, you would never trade a POTENTIAL middle of the order bat for a pitcher that is a true ACE RIGHT NOW? Like Brian Billick would say, your potential is going to get me fired. There’s is no hoping with Chris Sale. You’re getting a legit ace. And he’s signed for just two years less than Mazara. Thats insane. Mazara might need 2-3 more years before he’s even a stud outfielder, it might take Gallo more.
And as far as miles worse in the long run you’re like most people on this board that think all your great prospects now will turn into studs immediately and should be taking time out now to prepare their hall of fame speeches. Not me I’m taking the true ace right now, you can have your potential.
knolln
not 1, but 2 potential middle of the lineup bats. one already a solid 2 or 6 hitter, the other a question mark with power that only a handful of major leaguers have. you’re ignoring the part about the 2016 lineup for obvious reasons. no one would even pitch to beltre or desmond in the playoffs. and you vastly underestimate the impact in the long term when desmond is gone beltre is retired, and chris sale is 29 and pitching with a declining cole hamels and no offense. not like its a franchise or anything. team has a few good months made largely of smoke and mirrors (and i’m a rangers fan) and you’re going to cash in all the chips.
baumer16
I’m not ignoring anything. And ya maybe nobody pitches to Beltre and Desmond in the playoffs but honestly what has Mazara done so far that makes you think he’s so good RIGHT now? How about Gallo? Now imagine your 2016 playoff rotation of Sale, Hamels, Yu. I would take that over anyone in the AL besides maybe Clevelands. But even then your offense is better than theirs. And honestly you’re probably then the favorites I would think in the AL if you picked up a relief pitcher or maybe even a platoon bat.
I’m a firm believer in going for it when you have a chance. You have a 3 game lead and Sale would be an enormous upgrade. You never know what the next year might bring with injuries and free agency with other teams. You might be out of it by May. So when you have a shot go get it. And there might be a lot of growing pains with Gallo, and Mazara and Beltre is getting pretty old so he might began to regress.
knolln
all of those things are possible and i don’t disagree with any of them. and sale hamels darvish is best in the game come october. but still gonna say there’s not enough offense there to put the trio together and make it worthwhile. years gone by I might have bet on, I’m just not betting that enormous potential value on this club this year. you end up in a couple years with prince and choo and hamels mega deals and having to make decisions on sale or darvish if either. and those mega deals on offense are generating zero offense with a now depleted reservoir. i’d love to watch sale and the team down the stretch, just not a deal i’d make. i’m done. have a good’n.
coffeeaddict
2 outfielders for Chris Sale? The White Sox need a catcher that can hit and bullpen help.
Baseballholic
The way the Jays’ team has relied on every stat available to twist, scream and shout during each game they have recently broadcasted over their owners’ network,( which blocks the showing of any other game being played because it is under their dictatorship), and, as Stark states, as the 2016 way they gauge a baseball player’s value to his team, I’d say Sanchez had better have more than just a say in the way he is exploited by these manipulators: it is his career.
lastly, I know I may only one of the very few who are losing interest in following this Bluejays team because of the above reasons, and even more sadly ( as a lifelong baseball fan) I am only able to ‘see’ what their ownership allows me and ergo, wants me to ‘see’ up here
stormie
What on earth are you talking about? What is Sportsnet “blocking” you from seeing?
Baseballholic
Thank you for the question, or maybe the interr-bang (?!). I am trying to think of what I was thinking, and I must say it is an outrageous, over-the-top, even noir-ish statement..
It was the game before Buck”s returned. I only watch tv when a baseball game is showing. There are other factors, but the Jays’ announcers were rolling off their pretentious, factitious stats, and I wanted to see another ballgame….. there were only the usual watching-grass-growing tennis, golf, or darts being shown over our channels.. Usually, the Cubbies or the Yankees games are shown, but not that particular time.. I think that is the what to which I was referring.
Oh, btw, Buck’s return has certainly changed the nature of the broadcast, a return which shreds the substance of the former part of my statement!!
Have a great day, a day on which the Jays are in first place, eh?
Hank Murphy
The Blue Jays have 2 pitchers, both young, both are above their career highs in IP. Why does one have an innings limit while the other doesn’t? It makes me think this whole innings limit thing is nonsense if Aaron Sanchez has one but Marcus Stroman does not. If it was so vital to the future of a pitcher why not also shut down Stroman? He has never pitched more than 130 innings before this season. Sanchez’s high is 100 IP in the minors. Are you telling me that those 30IP make Stroman immune to an innings limit, because that’s the only difference between them in track records of innings thrown in a year.
If it is really important, than both need to be shut down, and if it isn’t that important, why shut down your ace?
jtmorgan
Stroman threw 166.1 between AAA and the majors in 2014 so he has a much higher baseline he has worked in the past. It does help that Sanchez threw more innings last year.
dontknowmuch
Can’t see the Ramgers including Mazara, especially if they have to include 3 or 4 more top prospects. Their offense isn’t good enough with Mazara, and to trade him creates a huge long term hole. Gallo, Brinson plus 2 more. If the Sox say no to that, then move on. And, yeah, I know how good Sale is.
baumer16
And I think that is what the Rangers would offer which isn’t a bad offer but if I’m the White Sox I would turn it down immediately.
sfu13
“Gallo, Brinson plus 2 more” Sure, for Miguel Gonzalez or James Shields sure, but that package doesn’t even get Hahn interested for Quintana. Sorry Rangers fans.
xwhyz
Gallo Profar Mazzaro plus two top prospects for Sale and Melky
johnb8510
Not likely, ,
TennVol
Using innings to judge how much a pitcher should pitch is a fallacy. There are tons of pitchers who had big jumps in innings pitched without any issues at all in their careers. I care more about stressful innings and pitch counts. If you look at Sanchez, he has had very few stressful innings this year and they have been very good at limiting his pitch counts. Also, the Jays have almost every Thursday off until the end of the season so there will be MANY weeks where he pitches with an extra days rest.
Jeff Todd
That’s what the post says. The cited article goes into it in detail. Innings are a short-hand reference … and fwiw I don’t think any of these teams that have been in innings situations with MLB starters (Strasburg, Harvey, etc) have ever just looked at it as just adding up frames. It’s just how people discuss it.
CFish96
Profar, Mazara, and Gallo for Sale.
Texas LawDog

Love reading all the “armchair” Managers and CEOs of MLB on here. Folks, its opinions of everyone and that’s just like a butt hole… everyone has one and it stinks. If the Rangers get Sale, good for them, all is fair in trades today. If not, will line up and play everyday regardless. Good Luck to all you smart managers that are sitting at home behind your computers 🙂

As a I think the Sox should trade Sale to my team for .
Trading an established Ace with this many affordable years left on his contract, more often than naught gets you nothing that matches in return.
I can see the Sox trading Sale in 2 years when only a 1 year is left on his contract, and still likely getting a similar if not the same type of haul then, but not now. Not when he is arguably the best and the best chance of the Sox at least being competative (which they HAVE to do if they want anyone to come to the park)
nwh2787
This is what I would offer teams like the White Sox or A’s
If Sale and/or Eaton is available what about:
Dodgers get: Sale and Eaton
White Sox get: Puig, Urias, De Leon, Stewart, and Bellinger?
or Quintana:
Dodgers get: Quintana and Eaton
White Sox get: Puig, Urias, Bellinger, Stewart
or to the A’s for Hill or even Gray???
Dodgers get: Hill and Reddick
A’s get: Puig, Urias, Stewart and (O’Koyea) Dickson
or …
Dodgers get: Gray and Reddick
A’s get: Puig, Urias, Stewart, Abdullah.
I would like to see if the Dodgers can pull a Sonny Gray trade off but Chris Sale sounds better. Rich Hill is risky but logical because of Hill’s age and injury history. He has done pretty good this season. Reddick is a good buy for the Dodgers. However, he is a free agent but I think if he becomes an impact player the Dodgers need, they’ll resign him during the offseason. Or just go with Howie Kendrick in the outfield?
impaler
I don’t understand this fascination with low avg home run hitters that the White Sox have. Give it a break. I want no part of Gallo. He’s a strike out machine, which reminds me of Adam Dunn.
In fact I would think their would be a few other teams in the mix here. Boston and Washington have plenty to offer and better prospects that would be better for us then what Texas has.
Let’s go BOSTON & WASHINGTON step up to the plate and make it work.
gammaraze
There’s not a team out there that would say no to a guy that would be guaranteed to give you Adam Dunn’s production.
OCTraveler
Urias, Puig, Deleon and anybody on the roster whose name is not Seager, Kershaw or Maeda
pullhitter445
Really hoping the white sox trade sale for a big haul. If they want even more high impact prospects or mlb ready prospects they could include a few bullpen pieces (Robertson or duke), position players Jose abreu, melky Cabrera, or Todd Frazier. There are some teams who could use multiple sources the sox have available.
nrd1138
Do not forget Shields, and Navarro as trade chips. Sale should go nowhere. All those other guys though can go and should. Sale and Quintana stay, but only if the Owner gets his head out of his @#$ and realizes the problem lay with the front office and the manager more than the guys on the field. 4 years of mediocrity is more than enough to realize Robin is not the next LaRussa and that Williams has no clue what he is doing in hiring Robin (his latest gaff) and not fixing the minor league system like he said he could when he was ‘promoted’ And other legitimate organization would have cleaned the exec offices about 2 years ago, but not this one. Gee I wonder why they are typically a .500 club?
nrd1138
If the Sox trade Sale then expect no one at the ballpark, and more comparisons to the white flag trade of the late 90’s (which really cause fans to go ape, especially for the lack of quality players the Sox got back, which I can see occurring again here).Sale is just far too valuable right now to ever get back what he is worth. The White Sox owner (JR) should just sell the club now and let someone come in willing to fire Williams for his ineptitude (I mean Mr ‘im going to fix the minor league system now that Im not GM’–well in 4 years I see no improvement in the system-remove Bell as well from player development)) and Robin for his incompetency and give everyone else, including Hahn, a stern warning that if you mess up you are gone too. Enough is enough. The Sox have wasted 4 years of Sale and Quintana because of having the wrong guy as manager and being way too proud to admit to it. Clean house in the org and then MAYBE trade Sale in two years if nothing improves after that.
