TODAY: The report on Blackmon “is not accurate,” Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said this morning in an interview with 106.7’s The Sports Junkies (via 106.7’s Pete Medhurst, on Twitter).
YESTERDAY: The Nationals are showing interest in Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon, according to Jon Morosi of MLB.com (via Twitter). While it’s not yet clear whether Colorado will deal the center fielder, we heard recently that the club was open to fielding interest on players such as Blackmon and Carlos Gonzalez.
It’s not difficult to see the connection here, as Washington has received marginal production out of center fielders Ben Revere and Michael Taylor. Both are controllable for 2017 — Taylor for much longer — but neither have performed to expectations, leaving the Nats with a unit that is playing at replacement level on the year.
The Nationals recently gave top shortstop prospect Trea Turner some time at center at the Triple-A level, and he is currently on the big league roster, but it doesn’t seem that he’s the first choice at present. Otherwise, the organization seems mostly set in terms of its lineup, with the bullpen representing another key area of need.
Blackmon, who just turned 30, is performing at career-best levels. Even after adjusting for the effects of altitude, his .305/.368/.481 batting line checks in at a 110 wRC+. While his glove has never rated particularly well up the middle, that could be due in part to playing at Coors. Plus, strong baserunning helps to make up any lost value in the field.
As a controllable asset, Blackmon won’t come cheap. He’s playing on a $3.5MM deal this year and is eligible for arbitration for two more seasons to come. Though a hefty raise is surely in the cards, Blackmon will no doubt remain quite affordable for a solid, everyday player.
If it’s easy to see why the Nationals would open talks on Blackmon, it also isn’t tough to guess at what the Rockies might target in return. Colorado has been stockpiling young arms, and could certainly look to further bolster the pitching ranks. Baseball America’s just-released, updated prospect ranking for the Nats includes several notable hurlers. Lucas Giolito is surely unavailable; it’s less clear whether that’s the case with regard to high-upside youngster Reynaldo Lopez, though he is now set to make his big league debut as well. Other names that could hold appeal include Erick Fedde, A.J. Cole, and Austin Voth. It seems fair to note, too, that the addition of a new center fielder could make Taylor expendable; other organizations might like a crack at refining his obvious talent.
krillin
Wow, that would be a huge add for them.
metseventually 2
His splits say otherwise. It would be like adding a second Revere
Ray Ray
OPS+ accounts for park factors. Revere’s OPS+ is 51. Blackmon’s OPS+ is 108. Blackmon wouldn’t adding a second Revere. He would adding two Reveres in one body.

Not sure I’m following … so the stories are all up to date regardless, but you’re only seeing all the comments if you are logged in? Is that accurate?

My problem is the comments are blank. I have to reload the page, and sometimes that doesn’t always show the comments.

Your latest articles were not updating either but it is all working now getting same thing logged in and logged out. This article here would only show when logged in earlier, other wise the Profar showed as the most recent story when logged out.

Would cost most of our A prospects

Have you seen Blackmon’s splits? This would be awful for Washington.
Ray Ray
Did you see Matt Holliday’s splits in Colorado? He must have turned out awful for St. Louis. Splits are the absolute worst way to judge a Rockies hitter.
metseventually 2
Tell that to Corey Dickerson and Tulo.
Ravens_Last_Place
How did Holliday do in Oakland?
Ray Ray
You mean in the 3 months in Oakland compared to the 8 years in St Louis? I guess if you want to look at it that then, yes, I guess he is just a horrible player. Coors Field should be demolished, the wreckage should be burned and the ashes shot into the sun. Then all records of the Rockies ever having existed as a franchise should be deleted. Would that make you feel better?
Ray Ray
How about Noah Syndergaard? His home ERA is 2.39 with a 10.44 K/BB rate while his road ERA is 3,72 with a 3.85 K/BB rate. Does that make him a bad pitcher?
What about deGrom whose home ERA is 1 run lower than his road ERA?
Same with Mark Prior 2.0…oops I mean Matt Harvey.
YesWeCano
His stats away from Coors shouldn’t be the indicator of how they’ll produce with a different home ballpark. Players tend to play better at home than away no matter what ballpark you play in.
nattytom
Yeah, I like this idea. Even though I’m a big Ben Revere fan, Blackmon would be a big improvement, even over a good Revere. Plus, how cool would it be to have two of the most epic beards in baseball in the same outfield?
I don’t know enough about what Washington would be willing to offer but I’m intrigued.
virginiascopist
My guess is they would offer A.J. Cole and probably either Eric Fedde or Austin Voth. Maybe another throw-in.
Ravens_Last_Place
Blackmon and CarGo for Bryce Harper. Straight up. 2 for 1, fair deal.
krillin
At this point I think Harper is an equivalent to what Jeter was to the Yankees, in the fact that he is kind of the staple for the team. Harper, I think, truly is an untouchable.
Ravens_Last_Place
Untouchable once he’s a Rockie. Right?
Ray Ray
I wouldn’t like that at all. For me, Harper is a much better villain than a hero. He’s like LeBron James, I have no desire to see him on my favorite team no matter how good he is.
hcs
I’m with you.
krillin
I am not much a gambler, and I am more of the type of person. But if somehow they could get Blackmon to guarantee to sign an extension, I personally would trade Giolito for him straight up. Simply because Blackmon is proven. I know many will probably disagree with good reasons. But, That is a deal I would try to swing if I could guarantee an extension.
krillin
* I am not much of a gambler. I am more of the type of person that takes sure things.
Sorry about that guys.
chieftoto
I see where you are coming from but I take Giolito over Blackmon every day.
krillin
Yeah, and I couldn’t argue against that either.
Ray Ray
Since Giolito is a starter and needs his rest, you should at least take Blackmon 4 out of every 5 days.
krillin
lol, that was good.
adyo4552
I think its important to remember that Giolito is as yet unproven, and Washington may have a window of opportunity to win right now. If Blackmon can get them over the hump, I’m not sure why you don’t just ride the Scherzer-Strasburg-Roark-Gonzalez train with Ross in the bullpen straight through the playoffs. Giolito is a luxury for a team trying to win right now.
How about: Blackmon + McGee for Giolito?
Ray Ray
I could go along with that if there were 2 or 3 lesser prospects added to the Nats side. I’m not a big fan of the Padres style of putting all your eggs in one prospect basket.
Jeff Todd
The biggest reason is that you don’t need to trade Giolito, because you can use other assets to get what you want. He’s a pretty rare pitching prospect and isn’t going to go in a deal that doesn’t bring back a top-flight, current MLB player with extensive control.
adyo4552
Like an all-star center fielder who is controllable for 3 years during the prime of your teams’ biggest star’s careers? =P
chieftoto
This would be monumental… Probably fedde and Robles for him.
virginiascopist
Robles isn’t going to be part of a deal for Blackmon.
koz16
Looking at his splits, I’m not sure how valuable Blackmon will be away from Coors field. I think the Nats need to find a way to get Trea Turner some more playing time, if not this year then make some moves in the off season. Traditionally, Dusty is keen on the young kids, so maybe they should look at trading Turner in the near future.
Bob Smiley
i hope the hype of Robles does not keep the Nats from adding Blackmon…remember what the innings limit of Stras did for them years ago….missed the playoffs. i’d deal Robles in a heartbeat for Blackmon.
krillin
I would probably have the same mentality. However, I am not going to claim to be an expert in this area.
Jeff Todd
For whatever it’s worth, they made the post-season in the year of the great Strasburg debate. Lost in the NLDS.
Ray Ray
That’s the whole point of the Stras debate though. If the Nats had missed the postseason, no one would have blinked at their shutting him down. It was the fact that they were pretty much a cinch to make the playoffs well before he hit his innings limit and they did nothing to save him for the playoff games. They were very arrogant and seemed like they just assumed that they would be there year after year. You would think that 1 of 2 franchises to never play the WS would understand how hard it is to be in that position.
Jeff Todd
I was just correcting a minor point. But if we must revisit this …
Calling them “arrogant” makes no sense whatsoever. Please go find where Rizzo said “eh, we’ll be back every year anyway, so we don’t care if it hurts us this fall,” or some such. Didn’t happen. He said that it was the decision that they made at the beginning of the year, and nothing had changed from a medical perspective to alter the team’s decision. I guess it’s debatable, but at the very worst it was akin to a team that decides not to give up a major prospect for a rental player at the deadline — certainly nothing morally questionable (quite the contrary).
I find it hilarious, too, that everyone now ignores what has happened to other pitchers who have been compared to Strasburg. At the time, everyone lauded the Braves for their plan with Medlen, but he has had major arm problems every since and has never been remotely the same guy. And last year, Harvey pitched through it. Hard to know if there was a true causal relationship in their cases, but anecdotally it sure doesn’t seem like it worked out in the long run for those pitchers.
Also, fwiw, I’d say it would have been harder to do the shut down had it not been clear that the team was going to make it to the postseason. You always want all your guns at any given time, but the playoffs are a crapshoot.
Ray Ray
I said it seemed like, I didn’t say they came right out and said it.. The reason they made that decision at the beginning of the year is that no one expected them to make the playoffs that year in the first place. Once it became apparent that they probably would make the playoffs, Shutting him down for June and July would have been preferable than the way they handled it. Of course the playoffs are a crapshoot, but having a pitcher like Strasburg in a short series is like owning a pair of loaded dice.
Jeff Todd
And yet, had they shut him down in June/July, who knows if they’d have run away with the division? How would people have reacted if they had saved innings for the postseason and then never made it? Talk about hubris …
brothbart
They won the division by only 4 games. They needed Strasburg to help get them there. They needed to shut him down as it was the best for him and for the team. Also he was not pitching well late in the season. It was always what they were going to do.
BorgDevil
Long-time Nats STH here. Completely agree with Jeff on this. As someone who watched every inning of the Nats that season – and DESPERATELY wanted to long into the playoffs/WS – the decision on Stras was spot-on. If you watched closely his last 3 starts before his shut-down, it was quite clear he was hitting a wall. He’d become very inconsistent even before that – 10K’s/2H/1BB in one start, and 9H/7R/3K in the next – after having pitched at an all-star level thru the first half. This is rarely talked about, but should be. It’s one thing to have a theory, but it’s other to have evidence to back up that theory.
The Management had a plan, saw evidence that supported the plan – and stuck to it. Maybe the Nats would have won the WS that year with him, but we might very well have a ruined Harvey/Medlen now. IMO, Rizzo looks like a genius and the Mets brass look like imbeciles now.
Yet another reason why the Nats won’t deal Giolito: (potential) top of the rotation guys are very hard to come by, and are a volatile lot.
Ray Ray
It could have been disguised as a “tired arm” in June and July. No one says you have to be 100% honest about why he is DL’d. That’s a much better PR move at the very least. They would have reacted the same way the fans of any good team that loses a player in summer reacts. They would have been sad, and then gotten over it. The fact that it still comes up in debate (not just this one) 4 years later, proves it hasn’t been gotten over.
I guess there is not much point in arguing anymore because my mind is the same as 4 years ago and I assume yours is as well.
BorgDevil
RayRay, are you saying Stras sandbagged starts to appear tired?? Or are you saying the Nats should have DL-ed him to save his innings/stretch him out? If the latter, they would have had to decide that much earlier in the season, as they shut him down right at 159 innings (saying his limit was ~160). They would have had to manage him pre-all-star break to stretch him into the postseason.
Ray Ray
I’m saying they should have DL’d him or moved him to the bullpen much earlier to save him for the playoffs, which to be honest are far more important games than a random July start against the Padres. They went into the season with a completely defeatist attitude and didn’t bother to change their minds when it became apparent that they had something going that year. It was a slap in the face to all of their fans.
Jamespfunk
I’d think Fedde and Taylor get it done. By the time blackmon’s contract is up Robles should be MLB ready.
Ray Ray
I don’t think there is much interest in Taylor. Moving Blackmon would only happen to make a spot for David Dahl in the big leagues. Getting back Taylor would really defeat that purpose.
I would rather the Rockies pick up Fedde along with possibly both of the Kieboom brothers. I am so feeling the marketing prospects of hitters named Kieboom playing in Coors.
As an aside, the Nats have a prospect named Joan Baez? Are Bob Dylan and Arlo Guthrie in the system as well?
brettmar21
0According to Rotowire
Avg/OBP/Slg
Home – .329/.393/.523
Away – .284/ .346/ .444
While there is no question he is better at home a guy hitting. 284 with a 34% OBP with pop is a welcome addition to any top of the lineup, especially the least productive in baseball.
On the surface we match up well. The Rockies need power arms and the Nationals have a bunch. I’m sure Lopez will be mentioned. I would go something like Cole and Michael Taylor for Charlie Blackmon and would consider doing Lopez if I had to.
Maybe
Aj Cole
Michael Taylor
Abel de los Santos for
Charlie Blackmon
adyo4552
Well he has to play in Dodger Stadium, Petco and AT&T park when he is on the road, so his road numbers aren’t exactly field-neutral either.
I stand by my Blackmon+McGee for Giolito swap. I don’t think either side could be unhappy with that.
virginiascopist
I think the Nats would love that deal (Cole, Taylor and de los Santos for Blackmon), but not sure the Rockies would go for it.
bhambravesfan
You can’t call Cole who works in the low 90’s a power arm. You also have to look at that offer from the Rockies side of things. Trade an all star CF for the Nats 7th ranked prospect with a 4.50 ERA and a failed OF
brothbart
Hopefully if they do this trade it is to flip him to the Yankees or another team for Miller or Chapman.
BorgDevil
de los Santos was just waived to clear room on the 40-man for Lopez… and was claimed by the Reds. So, that trade certainly ain’t happening!
brettmar21
Shoot, I didn’t catch that, I feel dumb haha
BorgDevil
just happened, so don’t beat yourself up! 😉
brettmar21
Rockies Get
EricK Fedde
AJ Cole
Drew Ward
Taylor Hearn
Nationals get
Charlie Blackmon
+ Cash
Ray Ray
Why would the Rockies send cash? Blackmon is making $3.5 million this year. I think that is what Jayson Werth and Max Scherzer tip their mailman at Christmas. I think the Nats should be able to cover that.
brettmar21
True but there is usually cash going back at some point in these deals. While I agree the Nationals can cover the contract. It just seems that these kind of deals usually have some sort of cash going back. Besides, ownership is loathed to add payroll midseason. This will ease the Lerners heartburn
ncbravesfan95
How bout a trade for Ender Inciarte and Matt Lipka for Pedro Severino and Steve Lombardozzi
CubsFanFrank
Gotta love the some guy said something/other guy denies it news and rumors of mid July and the GM Meetings.
Barrybonds25
why would anybody risk overpaying for Blackmon? Career BA on the road as a last checked was .249 with a sub-300 OBP, although some decent power. That does not sound like an upgrade for the Nats. And just a little additional info, DJ lemeheiu has a sub-300 OBP and something similar in BA on the road as well…. Can’t imagine Lemeheiu would come cheap either, although I don’t see the value there either.
Dookie Howser, MD
Nationals just want to make sure they keep their quota of dirty outfielders once Werth leaves
gobraves46
Blackmon for Roark straight up? Nats get their ideal fit for both CF and the lead off spot, And the Rockies get a proven innings eater to ease their young pitching (Gray, Hoffman, Anderson, etc) into coors field. Roark is expendable for the Nats because they have Giolito, Ross (coming back from DL), AJ Cole to fill in the rotation.
Nats get Blackmon, rotation becomes Scherzer, Stras, Gio, Giolito, Ross (on DL)
Rockies get Roark, replace Blackmon in CF with David Dahl (who from everything I’ve heard is ML ready)
brettmar21
IDK if Roark is that guy, I would think Colorado wants a power guy. That is not Roarks game.
BorgDevil
As a Nats fan, I don’t think the Nats do that deal – nor do I want them to. I like Blackmon and I think he’d be a great get for the Nats in CF. but Roark is our #3 starter right now, will be for this – a likely playoff-bound – season, and may be for the foreseeable future. Giolito and Lopez are potential middle or top-of-the-rotation arms, but they’re FAR from that now. I don’t know that either one pitches meaningful games late into this season, or makes the playoff roster. I’d be very comfortable with Roark as my #3 in the playoffs, based on his starter’s stats from this year and 2014. But not any of the other 4 guys (Gio, Ross, Giolito, Lopez). Not at this point, anyway.
halos101
jeez the home road splits for every Rockies player is getting lol. I think Blackmon would be a nice add for the nats and idc what his stats are on the road
