Right-hander Colin Rea, acquired by the Marlins alongside Andrew Cashner in Friday’s seven-player trade with the Padres, left his Marlins debut last night in the fourth inning with soreness in his right elbow, as MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro tweeted at the time. The injury was ominous even last night, and it hasn’t gotten any better, as the Marlins have placed Rea on the 15-day DL, and MLB.com’s Jon Morosi has tweeted that he’ll undergo an MRI tomorrow.

If the injury proves to be relatively minor and requires only a minimal DL stay, the Marlins can probably patch things together in the short-term. If it’s a longer-term injury, however, the Marlins could be forced into trying to scrounge up one more starter to round out the rotation before Monday’s non-waiver deadline (or, perhaps, via trade waivers in August). That’s not great news for a Marlins club that has depleted what was already a thin farm system in trades to acquire Rea, Andrew Cashner and Fernando Rodney from the Padres. Reporters have already begun to speculate on possible alternatives for the Marlins, with USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweeting that Jon Niese would make a good low-cost (in terms of prospects) rental, and FanRag’s Jon Heyman suggesting Ivan Nova (Twitter link).
While the injury to Rea, who was in the midst of an excellent debut (3 1/3 innings, one hit, no walks, four strikeouts), is an unquestionable stroke of bad luck for the Marlins, the misfortune goes both ways. Right-hander Chris Paddack, who went to San Diego from Miami in exchange for Rodney, has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament and is likely to require Tommy John surgery, per Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune (on Twitter). Paddack has been nothing short of sensational this year and has rapidly elevated his prospect status, but he now stands to lose a full year of development. Given the late stage of the season in which he has incurred the injury, Paddack could conceivably miss nearly all of the 2017 season as he recovers from the injury.

Marlins may have gotten damaged goods here.
Raptors Rampage
Marlins know about this when they traded for him or this happen after?
baseballjunkie68
He had to pass a physical. It happened during the game.

That doesn’t necessarily mean there wasn’t anything shady going on, during the events leading up to the trade. I remember in 2006 when the Reds and Nationals did that big swap of players which included Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez. The Reds tried to file a grievance because one of the players they received, Gary Majewski, had an injury and apparently had an undisclosed cortisone shot by the Nationals prior to the trade. The Reds tried to allege that the Nationals knowingly traded a damaged player and I guess try to cover up any signs of an injury prior to him being moved.

Rea has had issues with his elbow previously. Knowing the Marlins, they dismissed whatever was probably on the medicals b/c they only care about looking like they’re trying, and getting salary relief. Biggest thing in the trade for them was Loria not having to pay Cashner $2.4 million. They also think they’re smarter than the rest of the industry, which shows in the ridiculous moves they’ve made in the last 3 years. You’d think they’d learn from their mistakes, but they apparently prefer doing the same things over and over and over again, for a decade

Wtf r u talking about,JackA** ?! Hop off the marlins sack..dumbest sh*t I’ve heard
luwhoo91
About that time for the Marlins to start fading

Both sides end up with injured pitchers… what are the chances?

Any argument is a moot point because it’s happened to both clubs now, Paddack who the Padres acquired for Rodney is having Tommy John and will be out until 2018 at the earliest now.
It is just a strain for Rea but if it is more serious than that it is basically a wash because in the last two trades each team has a damaged good to show for it.
Ray Ray
Not really a wash because Paddack is just a prospect, so him being out for an extended period of time only sets HIM back. Rea being out for an extended period of time sets the whole Marlins team back, because he was being counted on to help win games for the big league club.

You’re like clockwork. Every single MLBTR post even tangentially related to the Padres, you have something negative to say.
youknowit
Paddack had a sub 1.00 era in two leagues and probably won’t be rated top 100 or even in Padres top 10. It’s a set back but right it doesn’t change his ETA too much. Rea looks to have a short DL stint if at all. Anyone who watched the start of yesterday’s game knows he wasn’t damaged goods. Injuries happen. Best for Marlins to give him 15 days vs rushing him? Team still has two years of control after this pennant run.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Rea has 5 years of control after this one.
Steve Malik
They can have Locke or Niese from the Pirates for a dozen of BB’s !!!!
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
There was some of talk of Rea being a Tommy John risk after he was shut down with elbow/forearm soreness last September. Surprised nothing came up in the physical.
Cam
Potentially did – but who knows, maybe the Marlins brushed it off or decided to roll the dice.
I’d be interested to know if there are many pitchers in the league right now with clean physicals, at all.
sweetmarie
I feel sorry for Rea, I just hope he’s not taking heat from anyone about getting hurt. Injuries happen, but he’s gotta feel awkward right now
SupremeZeus
Reminiscent of the David Wells to Chicago/ Mike Sirotka to Toronto “damaged goods” trade? Selling wouldn’t overturn the trade.
frankthetank1985
No team would purposely trade a player they knew would be hurt. They want to make future trades in the league so why would they want to ruin their name and do this for an average at best pitcher. He got hurt during the game. As a mets fan, I have seen this happen way to many times…should I be mad at the Giants cuz the mets got “damaged goods from them”. It doesn’t matter if it’s one start a season later. Trades are risky sometimes for this very reason. It’s not like fantasy baseball where u want to get the upper hand on a team. Mlb trades are only done if they benefit both teams in some way and that is because all teams want to be able to trade and not have their reputations stained.
