Chicago Rumors: Reddick, Robertson, Sale, Quintana, Duke

By Steve Adams | July 21, 2016 at 11:50am CDT

The Cubs are showing some interest in Athletics right fielder Josh Reddick, tweets Jon Morosi of FOX Sports and MLB.com. Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein drafted Reddick while serving as GM of the Red Sox, and the two sides were loosely linked by Morosi earlier this season. Of course, outfield isn’t necessarily a primary need for the Cubs, who have been more tied to bullpen help of late. However, the Cubs did cross one item off their wishlist with yesterday’s pickup of Mike Montgomery, and the Chicago front office/field staff clearly place a high value on harboring a deep roster that is tailored to allowing manager Joe Maddon to play matchups. Chicago is currently deploying Kris Bryant, Jason Heyward and Willson Contreras in the outfield with regularity, although Dexter Fowler will soon return, which could push Contreras back behind the plate and Bryant back to the hot corner more frequently. Reddick has long handled righties better than lefties and would provide a solid defensive option in the outfield. It’s a similar skill-set to that of Jason Heyward, though Reddick’s been the more productive of the two this season, slashing .301/.380/.445 in a season that’s been shortened by a fractured thumb. Reddick initially slumped upon activation from the DL, but he’s hit well more recently.

A few more notes out of Chicago…

  • The White Sox are now at least considering changing course to act as sellers this summer, reports Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. In particular, David Robertson is generating quite a few calls for the Sox, who have lost five of their past seven games and dropped below the .500 mark. Robertson is owed $29.45MM through the end of his contract in 2018, so he comes with considerable financial considerations. Then again, he’s also pitched quite well outside of a pair of disastrous meltdowns that saw him yield four and six earned runs this season, and the demand for impact relievers is high.
  • The ChiSox are also getting quite a few calls on outfielder Adam Eaton, says Heyman, though he’s controllable at a much more affordable rate and for considerably longer than Robertson. Eaton is owed just $21MM through the end of the 2019 campaign, and his contract includes club options for the 2020 and 2021 seasons that are respectively valued at $9.5MM and $10.5MM. For a player with his offensive profile and defensive wizardry in the corner outfield, that’s an enormously valuable deal that would require a huge haul for the White Sox to surrender.
  • While most who eye the White Sox will be hopeful that the club will part with ace Chris Sale or No. 2 starter Jose Quintana (who would be the top pitcher on many teams), Morosi tweeted this morning that there’s still great doubt within the industry that the Sox would part with either left-hander. The Dodgers, he notes have the prospects to make an overwhelming offer.  I should point out that the Rangers do as well, with Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News recently speculating that they could be a fit for Quintana if the Sox decide to sell.
  • Morosi tweets that the White Sox will have opportunities to move lefty reliever Zach Duke, who is controlled through 2017 and earning $5.5MM next year. That’s probably an understatement, as Duke boasts a 2.97 ERA with 10.5 K/9, 3.8 BB/9 and a 58.1 percent ground-ball rate this season. If the Sox do sell off some veteran pieces, I’d wager that they could get a nice piece for Duke even if they understandably hang onto more core pieces like Sale, Quintana and Eaton.

Chris Sale is one of the few guys I’d be fine giving up Moncada for as a Red Sox fan. Throw in Swihart and there could be a deal there, although I highly highly doubt the White Sox would part with Sale before the season is done.

We want either Moncada or Benintendi not Swihart. Keep him, he’s not a catcher going forward and we have enough of those unless he’s a throw in.

It’s so wild to me that Boston doesn’t even need Moncada or Benintendi, Bradley Jr and Pedroia are CF+2B long term.. That’s a farm to be jealous of. Sale for both of them is probably about right, but CWS will never trade him.

Neither Benentendi or Moncada is blocked this is such a silly statement that people are saying. Benentendi is going to play left field and They will find a spot for Moncada if he can hit probably third base. The only Sox prospect that is maybe blocked is Devers but he could shift to first base assuming his bat is as good as advertised. He is still very young and has a lot more risk then Benentendi and Moncada.

A package is going to start at 3 great players + you look at the Trio each team could offer with out deconstructing their teams,

          Profar, Gallo, Brinson
          Bregman, Reed, Martes
          Moncada, Devers, Benintendi

The Rangers have the best 3 blocks, The Astros offer the highest ceiling player and have extras like Musgrove,Tucker that the Red Sox could not match the Red Sox system is top heavy, and both other systems can match them at the top plus have more depth. The Rangers depth is also greatas they can put Tate or Ortiz on top of those 3. Quite simply the Rangers and Astros can match the Red Sox top 3 and then some.

The Dodgers would blow all 3 teams away in terms of pitching prospects with Urias, Deleon,Holmes also having Montas, Bellinger,Verdugo and Diaz in the Chamber and the added wild card of Puig.

The Red Sox could not really even contend with any of them if it was a bidding war, unless Betts or Bogaerts were put on the table which wont happen.

If the Red Sox didn’t make the deal for Kimbrel they would obviously be right up there but the craziest thing about the Rangers and Astros is they both already made huge package trades too, and their system remains stacked it really is a testament to their scouting, player development and talent acquisition.

I don’t know the other Farm systems well enough to know how they would be looked at but if the Sox traded all of their big three Kopech and may Shaw that would be a pretty big haul but maybe some other teams can beat that by going into there everyday players but pure prospects doubt it.

I completely disagree I think the Sox prospects are actually higher rated but I am a fan. Every publication that I have seen has the big three as higher combined rating then any other system players and that Moncada has as high a ceiling as any prospect in Baseball including Bregman.

It is a moot point though because it appears that no way they are trading Sale or Quintana they have the makings of a solid rotation so they will build around that. Fun to think about it though.

I’m a Cubs fan and in my opinion I highly doubt that the White Sox would ever trade a player of Sale or Quintana to the Cubs. We could try and may succeed at making the best offer but I think if one of the other teams make an offer close they will go with the other team.

White Sox should aim for depth if they do deal either Quintana or Sale. The system truly lacks depth. The Astros if they are willing to let with Bregman can give quite a package. A package that can include another ceiling guy and then 2 more major league ready players.

      Still doubt Bregman is traded.

Ridiculous and ignorant comment. The White Sox system is rated 18th, while not great and in need of a boost, it is RICH in pitching like Spencer Adams, Jordan Guerrero, Brian Clark, Zach Thompson, Alec Hanson, Zach Burdi, among others plus some intriguing bats like Jake Peter, Corey Zangari, and Micker Adolfo. And an Angels fan mocking ANY farm system is ludicrous, but from your posts, I bet your an angry Cubs fan.

No when you are trading a top 3 SP and another one who is borderline top 10-15 in the league, you don’t go for depth. You go for impact players. In the White Sox case they need offensive players who are or almost major league ready.

This. If they had to choose one thing, it’d definitely be quality over quantity. That being said, trading either one of their top 2 pitchers would only happen in a deal with a lot of quality AND quantity.

Reddick would be a fine fit for the Cubs, he’d practically replace schwarber completely. Reddick can play 3/7/9 so when the cubs go up against a righty they can go with Reddick/Fowler/Heyward and against a lefty (not knowing Reddicks career splits but assuming he’s better against Righties than lefties.) they could opt to roll with Soler/KB (Javy at 3rd) Fowler and J-Hey. And Reddick provides cover for Rizzo if anything happens (really hope not)

I think a closer evaluation of his Value from the cubs end would be Matt Scezur, Corey Black and maybe a lotto ticket throw in.

Totally agree! Moncada plus Benentendi plus kopeck another top 30… The Red Sox (and now the rest of the league) already know Swihart has too many flaws at ML level … White sox should out for ‘kings ransom’ (they don’t have to move him at all), whereas The Red Sox barely have enough pitching to make playoffs (you cannot assume Baltimore and Toronto will stand pat).

Sale is game changing for the Red Sox (allowing price to slot to #2). Sadly the reality is that the Red Sox will still need to get another starter …

White Sox need a complete rebuild. Hold Sale and Quintana until the offseason, dangle them to everyone (not just current contenders in need of TORs) then move them. Trade anyone not named Eaton, Anderson or Rodon at the deadline if there is interest. A’s aren’t going to move Reddick to the Cubs unless it is a complete overpay by the cubbies, Billy boy got depantsed in the Russell trade and pride won’t allow it.

Cubs don’t really need OF long term with Schwarber-Almora-Heyward the opening day 2017 OF + whoever else they can mix in (Zobrist, Bryant). I’d think it would depend. If a team takes on the whole contract they’d potentially be looking for a lesser return (assuming they are even in the market to dump his salary) but if they have to eat some or most of his salary, then they’d want a good prospect, because it’s hard to sell ownership on the whole “we are sending 5 mil to gain a nobody” especially when Robertson isn’t performing too poorly at the moment.

If the white sox want to trade Quintana to the Cubs I’d be ok with that!!! It would be costly but it would be well worth it

As a White Sox fan if we HAD to trade Sale or Quintana, I’d prefer it to be to the Cubs so I could at least still watch them; and hey, the Cubs would probably score Q some freaking runs!

Any GM worth his pay should be willing to listen about every player including Sale. With starting pitching being non existent on the market you would get twice the deal Braves got from the Diamondbacks for Shelby Miller. Hahn should at least put out the for sale sign and let all bidding begin.
If they use there assets properly they can completely replenish their minor league system and get some major league ready players to boot.

I think the Miller deal was more bad business on the side of the Dbacks than future precedent for the value of youg pitching on the trade market. But I do agree that the CHISoX should listen on everyone, but Sale is a tricky asset to trade, because teams are afraid to look like the Marlins when they traded Cabrera. They don’t want to look foolish 5 years from now if that top prospect fails. Sale shouldn’t be moved for a package less than a top 10 prospect (in all of baseball) an organizational top 5, and then a near MLB ready player to boot.

That package you described got Miller. Sale will pull in far more.

The Miller deal is such an outlier that it can not be used as a precedent for any player. Sale is one of the best pitchers and has tremendous value, but will not bring in more than the Miller deal.

Considering some team offered a “King’s Ransom” for Sale and was shot down, your claim of “Sale will not bring more than Miller” is wrong.

Define King’s Ransom, then we will know if it is more.

Wow to get Sale I think Red Sox would have to give up at very least Moncada, Beneditti, Groome, and Swihart

This would have to be a package or something similar because he is the best starter in baseball. I think red sox should do that trade and I think white sox should also consider it.
Maybe white sox throw in DRob if Red Sox willing absorb remaining money.

That’s probably too high, Groome can’t be traded for a year (even if they did the Trea Turner thing, that’ll hurt their respectability to future draft picks (specifically HS guys who have strong college commitments)) and I feel like all of those guys are far too much. I think Swihart, Bendetti, Henry Owens, maybe Basabe, and maybe Kyle Martin.

I’m pretty sure that teams can’t use that PTBNL loophole that was used with Turner. That would preclude Groome from any deal.

When trading a player the caliber of Chris Sale, there is no such thing as “too high of a price”

For any deal to happen it would require the White Sox to hand select EXACTLY the package in return that they want from the team that gets him. His contract alone makes him an extreme bargain

Your offer of Swihart, Bendetti, Owens, Basabe and Martin is not even worth picking up the phone for Sale of Quintana

Let’s not call him the best starter in Baseball when there is someone named Kershaw pitching. He is one of the best though.

He would be worth a ton on the open market and if the Red Sox could get him I’m sure DD would open the floodgates. Doubt that the White Sox will trade either him or Quintana though not there style to go in full rebuild mode.

The Red Sox aren’t trading Benintendi or Moncada (yes even for Sale…not saying he’s not worth it…they just wouldn’t do it). And LOL at people putting Groome in their proposals. The ink is still dry on his contract…

Don’t see the point in acquiring Reddick. With Fowler coming back from injury this weekend, Soler not far behind him, and with I assume Coghlan is close to being healthy again, they have Fowler, Almora, Heyward, Soler, Szczur, and Coghlan as OFers. That’s too many OFers right now. Why add another one who isn’t exactly a “must have” and is only a rental. Pretty sure Reddick is a FA at the end of the year. Also, isn’t Reddick injured? And isn’t he ALWAYS injured? Cubs already have a guy like that in Soler. Why get the white version, haha. I REALLY hope this “Cubs tied to Reddick” nonsense is just stupid media speculation. With Fowler coming back tomorrow supposedly that gives them Fowler in CF, Heyward in RF, and either Almora or Szczur in LF……… or Bryant…… or Contreras. IMO Bryant in LF makes the most sense. He’s shown he is capable out there. Make him the everyday LFer and make Baez the everyday 3Bman. Problem solved. Having Szczur, Almora, and eventually Soler as your backup OFers……. pretty sure this team is pretty solid OF-wise…… crap, and they have Coghlan who isn’t going to be on the DL for forever. Why the f*** would you add another? They just pissed away two solid prospects on a reliever, why throw away more for no good reason? Making trades for the sake of making trades is how GMs get fired.

Archer to LAD>..huh. He has been down, but LAD is in bad need. They better be paying a premium bc being able to get Archer at a discount would suck for the other 28 teams.

Chris sale is one of a kind talent it’s gonna require a huge haul to get him. I doubt the white sox trade him though.

A’s have a lot to offer the Cubs. Is it possible the Cubs try to package a relief pitcher with Reddick? A’s have 4 guys who would be good additions to the back end, Ryan Dull, Sean Dolittle, Marc Rzepczynski, and Ryan Madson all have put up good numbers this year and could prove valuable to the pen. Dolittle a lefty is owed 7 million the next two seasons and has a club option in 2019 for 6 million. Rzepczynski another lefty is a rental and is gone at the end of the season, so he won’t be as expensive as Dolittle, and he will be a lot cheaper than Chapman.

Madson a righty with a ton of experience is owed a ton! I don’t see the Cubs going after him, and if they do they would have to come up with something creative to keep from paying the 15.5 million owed over the next two seasons. I think Dull would be someone that would peak Theo’s interest. Dull has put up GREAT numbers this year and is young and controlable. Two more years pre arbitration after this year and then three years of arbitration, not a free agent until 2022.

What do you guys think? Do the Cubs try to land another relief pitcher in a package deal with Reddick?

Don’t be silly, the White Sox don’t sell. They prefer to go all in with some strange ‘look what we did’ move, like trade for the carcasses of Sabbathia and A-Rod.
