Jonathan Lucroy stunned fans and many in the industry when he exercised his no-trade clause and vetoed a trade from the Brewers to the Indians. There are varying reports on the reasons behind Lucroy’s decision (which are examined in further detail here), but suffice it to say, talks between the two sides appear to be dead. Lucroy, of course, still can be traded to a number of other clubs, as his no-trade clause reportedly consists of the Indians, Tigers, Twins, Angels, Athletics, Padres, Mariners and Nationals. It should be noted that, as was the case yesterday, Lucroy has been held out of the Brewers’ lineup to eliminate the risk of an injury that would torpedo his value.
With Lucroy back on the market, we’ll run down all of the Sunday rumors pertaining to him in this post…
- Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star Telegram tweets that the Rangers and Brewers are discussing Lucroy and a reliever, with Gallo indeed likely involved in the talks. However, he notes that nothing is imminent between the two sides at this time.
- MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan reports that slugging third base prospect Joey Gallo is “likely” involved in talks between the Rangers and the Brewers (Twitter link).
Earlier Updates
- MLB.com’s Jon Morosi tweets that one scenario being discussed has one of Yohander Mendez or Luis Ortiz going to the Brewers (obviously, among other pieces).
- FanRag’s Jon Heyman tweets that the Mets are out on Lucroy, but the Rangers and “others” are still in the mix.
- ESPN’s Jayson Stark tweets that the Brewers and Mets are no longer discussing Lucroy — an indicator that the Rangers could becoming an increasingly likely landing spot.
- Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram characterizes talks between the Brewers and Rangers as “serious.” (Twitter link)
- Mets officials are focused on trying to get a trade for Lucroy or Jay Bruce completed by tomorrow’s 4pm ET non-waiver deadline, writes ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin. They’re back in the mix alongside the Rangers as well, it seems.
- The Rangers are “strongly in the mix” for Lucroy, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Grant, meanwhile, tweets that the Rangers are having “productive” trade conversations, which he presumes pertain to Lucroy.
- The Dodgers expressed interest in Lucroy recently, per FanRag’s Jon Heyman (on Twitter), but the talks were part of a larger deal that would have involved more teams. FOX’s Ken Rosenthal agrees with Heyman, tweeting that the Dodgers were likely to spin him elsewhere if the deal had been worked out. In addition to Lucroy, Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes is drawing interest from other clubs, tweets Yahoo’s Jeff Passan, so there could be a wide array of moving parts. Speculatively, Barnes could be a near-MLB-ready fit to head back to the Brewers in a potential three-team deal.
- Heyman also reports that the Cubs were in the mix as one of the aforementioned “mystery teams” on Lucroy, but talks never got especially far, as Chicago felt that the Brewers were factoring an “in-division” tax into talks (Twitter link).
- ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick tweets that the Tigers have lingered on the fringes of the Lucroy market and have a slight chance of jumping back into the fray, but they’re more focused on starting pitching upgrades at this time. Additionally, it should be noted that Detroit is one of the other seven clubs on Lucroy’s no-trade list, so similar issues could arise if the Brewers engage the Tigers in serious talks.
- The Mets are holding internal meetings to discuss whether they should jump back into the Lucroy mix, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. That could mean changing their offer, coming up with a new package entirely or simply deciding to step away altogether. There are at least some indications that the latter of those options is the likeliest, as Sherman’s colleague Mike Puma hears that the Mets are out on Lucroy. Passan tweets that in addition to Travis d’Arnaud and outfield prospect Brandon Nimmo, the Brewers asked the Mets to include another MLB-ready player.
- Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News writes that he believes the Rangers would prefer the Brewers to add a reliever to the deal if talks regarding Lucroy are to become serious. For the time being, the Rangers’ primary focus remains on adding an impact starting pitcher to the rotation, though the club figures to remain involved in Lucroy talks to at least some extent based on previous interest.
Thronson5
What is with my Dodgers and always trying these 3 team trades? Lol. I wonder is this goes anywhere. Seems like we went from pretty much being s matter of time before we got that deal done for Jay Bruce to not happening.
BlueSkyLA
The word coming out of the clubhouse now is the team is wondering if the FO intends to make the needed upgrades.
jbkelly33
I would have to agree.
BlueSkyLA
As does most of the fan base. Bill Shaikin on this subject today::
latimes.com/sports/mlb/la-sp-baseball-shaikin-2016…
I think he’s being a bit too kind to Walters and Friedman, but at least he points out the differences in philosophy between this FO and the others.
jbkelly33
where’s Ned when we need him? he always have us hope at the deadline!
Thronson5
I really hope we do something. We need starting pitching and we don’t need another injury prone pitcher or another 5th in the rotation type of guy either. We need a #2 type starter and even if there aren’t many out there I think we have the depth to make that happen. As a die hard Dodgers fan I’m really getting sick of saying “next season” it’s getting old, especially when the Giants have won a few in recent years. We didn’t really do well in free agency so they gotta make up for it here at this trade deadline. I personally would like to see them get Jay Bruce and a Starter. Who do you guys want them to get? And sorry if I’m being a bit dramatic, I know it’s not the end of the world if we don’t make any moves but I’m kind of bummed out with all the injuries we have year after year and watching the front office really not do too much when we need them to.
BlueSkyLA
So much depends on something we don’t know, which is whether Kershaw is going to pitch again this season. It’s news when he even shows up in the dugout to watch a game so I am leaning towards season-ending surgery being announced after the trade deadline. The FO totally blew the trade deadline last year, and the offseason, and they don’t seem willing to part with any significant prospects to pick up the moving parts they’d need to compete down the stretch and into the postseason. So they are stuck sifting around for dregs and maybe fixing none of the team’s glaring weaknesses. That may actually turn out for the best in the end, if Kershaw really is gone for the season, as I am beginning to suspect he is. It sure is getting old but this is the approach being followed by “Stan Pat” Kasten and his band of overeducated minions.
jbkelly33
i think any trade involving lucroy to la would also require trading grandal.
AGAVE
Not necessarily.
Barnes could be included in that.
Lucroy would offer the potential catcher tandem to the younger arms coming up

If you’re the smartest guy at the table in a 3 team trade, you can win it easier with all the talent swapping around
BlueSkyLA
Only if you really are the smartest person at the table instead of just thinking you are.
agentx
Excellent comments as usual, BlueSkyLA. And thanks for posting the Shaikin link!!
gammaraze
Not really. The smartest person at the table can tell the future no better than the dumbest one. It still takes some level of talent evaluation, negotiating skills, and some small amount of luck… The Cardinals lost their best prospect in a tragic accident.
Simple example… who would most likely win a 3 team trade… Einstein, Steven Hawking, or an MLB GM?
aff10
Depends on the GM…
chound
Mets are really going to have to up that lame offer but they absolutely can! And, the Dodgers can pretty much have anyone they want… My two favorites.
Sportfeen69
Tf u talking are u dumb ?

Not sure what you said but I bet you are.
Sportfeen69
Ok crack head
johnny53811
Wouldn’t it make sense to talk to Lucroy before getting that deep into trade talks? The whole thing is moot if he has no interest in going to a team for whatever reason… I would imagine they will now start talking to teams not on the no trade list.
mikeyst13
Some reports are they did talk to Lucroy and he said he’d waive the no trade if Cleveland gauranteed the plan wasnt just to flip him in the off-season so it’s not a matter of him not wanting to go there, but rather seeking some stability for his family.
johnny53811
Got it. I hadn’t heard of that. Thanks for the info.
User 4245925809
Had to be something weird like that going on. Francona is/was one of the easiest to get along with managers ever. Sure.. He might have his pet players and the like and prefer veterans over rookies, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t friendly and chatty towards everyone, just like his dad was.
Out of place Met fan
Can’t talk to another team’s players without explicit permission from the team a player is under contract with.
SD Speak For Myself
MLB Network is reporting this deal is done. MLBTR are you behind?
ThatGuy 2
No, you’re behind
ray_derek
So instead he’ll get dealt to Texas and get traded in the off season anyway. What a dink, thanks Milwaukee, here’s your crappier package for me, it was a good run
padnastikador
And who was it that gave him the no trade clause?
mech13
Doubtful the Rangers would do that. He’d be providing premium performance at bargain, especially with the expectation of losing Moreland’s power and the possibility of losing out on Desmond to a team with a bigger checkbook. Factor in Choo and Fielder’s perpetual inconsistency/injury, and it makes even more sense to capitalize on that bargain in 2017. Also worth mentioning….we have lackluster plate performance across the board with our backstops, with no high performance successor in the minors since we traded Alfaro in the Hamels deal last year. I can see the Rangers vying for a chance to keep Lucroy after the 2017 season if he keeps it up.
charles stevens
Rangers are finding the price of pitching to be very expensive. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them jump back in on Lucroy.
mikeyst13
They could try for a package with one of the relievers or even Junior Guerra (whom they’ve apparently been scouting). Would probably allow them to get 2 pieces for cheaper than 2 separate trades.
villariousfind
Lucroy and junior Guerra to rangers for Pitchers yohander Mendez, Connor sadzeck, Tyler Ferguson and outfielder leody taveras and maybe catcher Jose Trevino. Most of rangers top prospects and those closest to MLB, were not included with exception of Mendez. Helps rangers on 2 ways w/o robbing near ready MLB talent. Brewers get younger and get some pitching prospects and another catcher option
gbp4ever
Replace Taveras and put in Guzman and you might have something there
padnastikador
Joey Gallo, Yohander Mendez, Ryan Cordell, Jose Trevino, and Anderson Tejeda For Jonathan Lucroy, Will Smith, and Junior Guerra
WetPaint
If you take princes’ contact lol
padnastikador
Joey Gallo, Ariel Jurado, Josh Morgan, and Jose Trevino for Jonathan Lucroy and Jeremy Jeffress
Braves.Eagles.92
Braves offer Lucas Sims, Braxton Davidson and Luke Dykstra for Lucroy. Too much or not enough?
brandons-3
Not enough certainty there, even as a Braves fan. When you trade a Lucroy type player, you’d like at least two guys who, worst case scenario are going to at least play well enough to hold a major league job for a while, even if it’s not at their projected levels. Maybe if you add John Gant, who at the very least will be a part of somebody’s pen. Braxton is still young and plate discipline is hard to learn, which he struggles with right now mightily. Sims goes on stretches that make people think he’s one the best in the most loaded pitching system in baseball, but he goes on stretches that make you wonder if he’ll even pitch well enough to earn an MLB promotion.
JT19
Not enough. I understand the Braves have a somewhat deep farm, but three guys who don’t even crack their top 10? The Braves would need to give up at least one top 10 prospect (and possibly two) depending on the rest of the haul.
brandons-3
The Braves system isn’t somewhat deep, it’s the deepest in the majors. Their system isn’t topped ranked because it’s heavy on impact talent. It’s topped ranked because they have a lot of guys who probably will be major leaguers.
dwilson10
I’d like to see the O’s try to get Lucroy. They could include Wieters and another prospect or 2. Then extend Lucroy a multi year contract. I don’t see the O’s trying to bring back Wieters since he’s struggling this year.
mikeyst13
Why would the Brewers take back Wieters on an expiring contract?
1tav
Does anyone know if the CBA would allow the Indians to kick Lecroy another million or so onto his contract to get him to waive his no trade clause. This may open up some sort of Pandora’s box, so may not be allowed. I believe they are allowed to guarantee to pick up an option though, so I don’t know.
gbp4ever
Yes they can give Lucroy a signing bonus to come there but Lucroy wants the 2017 option year voided to go to Cleveland which they won’t do.
darenh
That’s not what I read.
Luc wanted guaranteed starting C job in ’17 heading into Free Agency to keep his value at its peak. CLE said they wanted Luc to C, DH, 1B in ’17 with Gomes back.
He said no and instead asked them to void the team option to which obviously CLE said no.
dhud
Do you just refuse to spell his name right out of principle or what??
Ray Ray
Why in the world would the Cubs want him? Don’t they have enough catchers playing left field?
mikeyst13
Would make sense for the rest of this year. Contreras is up for his bat, but they still want him to work on his pitch calling and game management, which is why he only catches once a week. Lucroy would be a vast improvement over Montero and Ross the rest of the time. They would probably have to flip him in the off-season though as next year would be a huge logjam.
Ray Ray
Of course he would be an upgrade, he is a top 5 catcher in the league. But what do you with Montero? This isn’t a video game, you can’t just flip a guy because you need to move him. Do you just release him? How much do you hurt team chemistry if you do release him? They aren’t going to release Ross because he is Lester’s personal catcher. Just a horrible idea all the way around.
mikeyst13
Wouldn’t worry too much about team chemistry if they released him. Ross is beloved, Montero you never hear much about. He’s been a sub-par catcher who probably has no real spot on the roster next season. This is a team that wants to win this year and it would fill one of their few holes.
Douggy44
I definitely agree… The Cubs are going to be using Contreras and Schwarber next year. The Cubs probably should get Jonathan Lucroy if they are going all out this year I mean they h have gone for AroldisChapman so why don’t they just take him away from other teams I mean after all Lucroy has always been a Cubs killer
causality
Dilson Herrera Brandon Nimmo and Travis d’Darnaud. Get it done Sandy.
pdubs2907
Not enough. Nimmo and D’Arnaud are blah.
darenh
D’Arnaud isn’t an asset.
Oft injured, old, once-prospect has no place in a deal for Stearns. throw him in as filler to the deal, sure, but he’s worthless to a team like MKE trading it’s too players in a full tear down.
Francys01
Again with Lucroy’s news, I thought that it was going to be over once he was traded to the Indians.I was glad for the Indians to have a high qualified catcher, but he did not accept. We are starting again to hear the latest news about the Lucroy’s trade, I would be glad if Lucroy gets traded to the Rangers.
1tav
With the tailspin that the Mets are in, and the high prices that teams are getting in this sellers market, I think they should consider selling off a few specific players. Much like the Yankees are doing. I don’t know if Alderson has the ability to make that adjustment in 24 hours in him or not.
angelsfan4life
I am wondering, why has no one pointed out the obvious? Maybe he didn’t want to go the Indians, because he knows he won’t be the starter there. He would be riding the bench in Clevand.
Ray Ray
He wouldn’t be riding the bench. He would probably be DH or 1B a lot of the time though and he had no desire to do that. I respect that.
mlbscout6 2
I’m not sure he would DH or play 1B all that often on team that has both Napoli and Santana. I’ve heard that his agent to him to reject any trade to a team on his restricted list unless the aquiring team agrees to let him become a free agent in the offseason.
Ry.the.Stunner
Cleveland’s #1 catcher on the depth chart is hitting .165 and is currently on the DL. It’s idiotic to suggest Lucroy wouldn’t be a starter.
stymeedone
The Indians wanted him because the current group of catchers can’t hit. That’s not going to change in the future. I can’t believe they had any hesitation in telling him he would be their starter. Fools.
brandons-3
That bird doesn’t fly. No MLB team, let alone with one that has pretty respected management in Cleveland, is going to flat out tell a guy of Lucroy’s caliber that he might not be the full-time starter. I’m sure they told him they’d reduce the wear and tear by playing him at first and DHing in addition to catching. Lucroy balked because a lot of his value is as a catcher that can hit. He’d rather wait a year to get the fat contract and then he’ll be cool with the less wear and tear deal once he’s got his money. I don’t blame a guy for wanting his money. I do blame him for spending the past several months clamoring to be on a contender and then vetoing a deal to the AL favorite.
padnastikador
He had Cleveland on his limited no trade list for a reason. Maybe he just didn’t want to have to watch Browns games in the off-season. Nobody deserves that.
mike156
Lucroy had a limited no-trade, and decided to exercise it. I don’t see a problem, especially because he’s got a cheap option and the team acquiring him wants to utilize him in a way that might reduce his value.
Weighed
I wonder if the Indians knew he wasn’t coming so they put a large piece in the trade like Frazier. Puts the trade value right up.
dhud
I may be missing the point you’re trying to make, but Frazier went to the Yankees for Andrew Miller
One Fan
I think we are all missing his point. Is he saying he thought Frazier was included in the trade offer to the Brewers and that somehow the Indians “knew” Lucroy was not going to come? Huh? So he is suggesting they put that “large piece” in the offer because I guess it was safe? Since Lucroy would veto it? So they then would not lose Frazier??
I guess Weighed thought that was the plan?
Hey weighed, maybe if they did not want to part with Frazier in Lucroy trade they would just not offer him in the deal!
hanks1hammer
Tough hit for the Brewers. Now the world has the information that Luccroy will want his team option for 2017 waived if you are on the no trade list and as it is, I wasn’t impressed with what the Indians were sending the Brewers. The value of the package was increased a LITTLE with Meija but it still was less than I thought he would attract and you cant say it was because he would be a one year rental because this was the offer BEFORE the team option issue came out.
bradthebluefish
You really cannot blame Lucroy. Indians should have at least committed to him be their starting catcher on Day 1 and if not, trade him where he can be a starting catcher. Glad he stood up for himself.
11Bravo
As a Brewer fan my knee jerk reaction was about him demanding more money. But as I read that they wanted him to be the backup catcher and play 1B and DH I completely understand why he rejected the trade. He’s still looking for that big contract and he’ll get it if he’s the starting catcher, not a glorified utility player.
One Fan
Why would Lucroy approve a trade in exchange for a promise the Indians trade him where he can be a starting catcher day 1? So he should approve a trade to somewhere on his no trade list and allow that team on his no trade list to just trade him again? So his family can just pick up and move again? Assuming they even honor the promise?
Or
Lucroy can say no to the deal. Keep control of his career as a starting catcher for now. Keep his family in the same city for now as he is still not a free agent until after 2017 for now.
hanks1hammer
I don’t blame him. I just sympathized with the Brewers issue at that moment. I find Lucroy’s decision completely understandable
Ray Ray
Not really about Lucroy, but just wanted to point out that Jay Bruce is not in the Reds lineup today.
One Fan
Why would Bruce be in the starting lineup? If he is not traded today he will not be in the starting lineup tomorrow either. In fact I would be stunned to see Lucroy jn the starring lineup or anybody being dangled in trade talks in the starting lineup.
Everyone and their mothers know Bruce is being dangled in trade talks. The news would be if he actually was in the starting lineup. Not the other way around.
MB923
Him Not in the lineup is still news. Just like how Lucroy was not in the lineup yesterday
One Fan
How is that news. Anyone in trade discussions will not be in lineups
chound
Well, the Rangers can absolutely go out and get anyone as well (Said Dodgers above), so good on them if they can pull it off!
ArmChairGM-
I wonder if Luis Ortiz, Ryan Cordell, Andy Ibanez, Jose Trevino and Bobby Wilson could get the lucroy deal done.
I’d then look to trade Gallo, Brinson, Tate, and Brett Martin for another TORP.
Schroeder
Dear Jon Daniels,
RANGERS NEED PITCHING, MOST NOTABLY STARTING PITCHING
mikeyst13
Of course they do, but where are they gonna get it? Starting pitching market is very thin and very overpriced because of it.
rich5344
I agree Rangers need SP more then position players. Although Lucroy is a nice upgrade at C for them, they really should be using prospects for sP.. Their SP isn’t going to get them through the playoffs.
southi
Well if the Rangers are sending Gallo to the Brewers as part of the deal for Lucroy then I feel saddened for the fans in Texas. They will surely miss that extra breeze Gallo creates.
Sorry, I just couldn’t resist.
rangersfan18
As a Rangers fan this is quite comical
Danthemilwfan
Joey gallo and a pitcher and I’m happy
chound
Looks like a good get for the Brewers! (I mean through the rumor pipeline).
cbf82
I highly doubt Texas pulls this off. The Lucroy rumors to Texas have been goin on for years! Besides, our biggest need is pitching!
jaa182
The Brewers already have Joey Gallo, except his name is Chris Carter. I’d much rather see a deal involving Ortis and Mendez.
GoPackGo23
Did you just compare Gallo to Carter? I’ll agree with you in terms of power they are similar but you can’t tell me a fully developed Gallo won’t hit over .215…not to mention he can play 1B and 3B both which the Brewers need and is a lefty power bat
mikeyst13
If he can’t hit more than .250 in the minors what proof is there he’ll hit more than Carter’s .225 in the majors? Obviously he’s still only 22 and can develop at the plate, but he’s starting to remind me of Mark Reynolds.
MilwaukeeBravesFan 2
Agree… I feel like he’s going to be Mike Olt 2.0
mikeyst13
Don’t get me wrong, I’d still love to see him in the return on a deal and hope his swing develops into more than just a power hack. I just am not convinced he’s the next Kris Bryant like some people want to believe.
AidanVega123
He’s hit over .300 at Double A, he just needs to time to adjust. Last year, he batted under .200 at AAA, but this year is batting like .246 or something. You’ve just gotta be patient with the kid.
mikeyst13
Over 34 games, that’s a fairly small sample size. Then when he got called up to AAA he hit .195 in 50+ games.
MilwaukeeBravesFan 2
True… Texas kinda rushed him to the MLB level this year.
jaa182
Yes, I did. It’s possible that he will develop and become the next Jim Thome or Adam Dunn but if he doesn’t, he’s basically Chris Carter. Gallo apparently has a rocket arm, but isn’t likely to stay at 3B long term. Isn’t it telling that the Rangers seem to be willing to trade him? I’d rather have some quality pitching prospects, but maybe the Rangers have taken them off the table.
mikeyst13
I don’t think the pitching prospects are necessarily off the table even with Gallo included if the deal really would contain one of their relievers or Junior Guerra (or even both) as rumors seem to indicate.
billysbballz
Hey Dodger fans, your in wild card hunt and lost another pitcher. You call the Yanks and ask for Tanaka and Pineda plus Beltran or Gardner. What are you giving back?
rich5344
Lucroy makes sense to Boston! They could use him make there pitching better, and they have a loaded farm system to get him and wouldn’t even hurt the farm system
rich5344
anything new out there the last hour or two with Lucroy?
drewm
Everything went quiet. Apparently the Brewers and Rangers know how to negotiate in confidence.
pdubs2907
It did go quiet all of a sudden. I think if a deal gets done it’s definitely with the Rangers. Hopefully for Mendez or Ortiz and Brinson and another prospect (maybe both if a MIL pitcher is involved). Gallo may very well be a bust. If it doesn’t work with TEX, I think Stearns will just keep Lucroy and trade him through waivers or in the off-season.
AGAVE
Norris’ injury doesn’t concern me.
Hey the necessary treatment, stretch him back out and get him back into his rhythm
Danthemilwfan
I think the trade may be done for Gallo and whoever else. The Brewers AAA 2 catchers who also play first base to keep their .330 batting averages in the game did not start or pinch hit tonight so I’m guessing at least one is coming up tomorrow to replace Lucroy.
Danthemilwfan
Gallo, Ortiz or Mendez and maybe a third or 4th player too for Lucroy and whoever the Rangers want out of our bullpen(smith probably). I think that’s what we’ll hear by tomorrow morning
pdxbrewcrew
For Lucroy and Jeffress/Smith, the Rangers package would have to at least match the package the Indians were willing to give up for just Lucroy. If Gallo and Ortiz/Mendez are the start, a pitcher like Brett Martin or Connor Sadzeck and someone like Josh Morgan would seem reasonable.
