Yankees GM Brian Cashman recently spoke to MLB Network Radio (audio link; some transcribed quotes are also available via Chad Jennings at the Journal News) about his team’s strategy heading toward the non-waiver trade deadline. The Yankees are currently 44-45 and 5 1/2 games back in the Wild Card race. Cashman notes that the team’s ultimate approach could be dictated in part by how the team performs in the next few series. For now, the Yankees are “having both conversations,” meaning that they’re considering both buying and selling. He lists the starting rotation and the front end of the bullpen as areas he’s already tried to improve, although offensive upgrades appear unlikely. Here are more notes from the East divisions.
- The Phillies have Jeremy Hellickson’s turns in the rotation lined up with those of prospect Jake Thompson’s starts with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, as CSNPhilly.com’s Jim Salisbury notes. That’s potentially significant in that Thompson could slide into the big-league rotation if the Phillies deal Hellickson in the next couple weeks. Thompson, one of the prospects the Phillies acquired in last year’s Cole Hamels deal, has posted a 2.42 ERA and 2.6 BB/9, albeit with just 6.2 K/9, in 111 2/3 innings with Lehigh Valley this year. Hellickson, for his part, says he isn’t focused on the trade rumors surrounding him. “I’d love to be here the rest of the year, but obviously I’ve been through it before and know that side of the game,” he says. “But, yeah, my focus is on here and my next start right now.”
- The Rays are attracting plenty of interest in their starting pitchers, as SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo tweets — the Cubs, Rangers, Dodgers, Pirates, Yankees, Astros, Blue Jays, Orioles and Tigers have all inquired. Representatives from the Pirates and Dodgers, along with the Nationals, Red Sox and Marlins, were all on hand yesterday to watch Chris Archer’s start against the Orioles, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin (Twitter links). (It is perhaps worth noting that those teams might have been scouting the game for other reasons, not purely to watch Archer.) Archer seems perhaps less likely to be dealt than fellow Rays starters Matt Moore or Jake Odorizzi. Various recent reports have indicated that the Rays aren’t currently interested in trading Archer, who has struggled a bit this year and is under control for the next several seasons.

Yanks will be DOA at the TD. It’s going to be pretty enjoyable to watch my Sox destroy any dreams of the playoffs they have left for this season. Get out the brooms baby!!!
MB923
Hi BigPapi. Do you have the 2016 WS trophy yet?
Twinsfan79
Hmm, he does have a ring to his text.
Bosox1968
I’m a die-hard Sox fan as well “cityof…” But those declarations of championships with half the season still to play, is one of the biggest reasons that people jump all over you (and by default all Sox fans). Not all Sox fans are like this, I’m certainly not. I have no illusions of us winning it all with all the ???? we have…rotation, closer off knee surgery, most of all, the unknowns!! Yes, I’m a Sox fan
BadCo
I’m right there with you … Like our team but this thing is far from over and any reasonable fan does not crowing at the half way mark… Seen way too many teams fold in Aug and Sept
seamaholic 2
Your team isn’t even in first place! And that’s with pretty decent luck with injuries and sequencing. They might not even make playoffs.
whitemule70
A thoughtful Red Sox fan. Nice to see that there is one. Most of them are insecure windbags.
MB923
Oh there are plenty. But there’s also plenty of fans just like BigPapi4eva
soxfan1
Not true, the folks that feel the need to post like “cityof” are not representative of RSN.
blazeitlikelincecum
Boston has 2 classes of fans. Real fans and “pink hats”. Real fans still carry that internal pessimism from not winning in spectacular fashion. Pink hats started being fans after the winning started.
Ray Ray
In fairness to the guy, he didn’t claim the Red Sox would win the WS. He was talking about Boston knocking the Yankees into being sellers. Although, he was doing it in a very obnoxious way,
MB923
He mentioned it in other threads/posts
mike156
OH, NO. To quote Daffy Duck in “Duck, Rabbit, Duck” “Not again….”
Foreveryankees
Just traded your best pitching prospect for a guy with shoulder problems and has never thrown more than 120 innings. DUMB.
yankeesfan681202
A team that goes into the trade deadline leading the east doesn’t always win it, if you recall the Yankees were sitting comfortably at the top with a 7.5 game lead over the Blue Jays last year. Red Sox aren’t even leading the division and if they were the doesn’t guarantee them anything cuz you never know what could happen in the second half.

Hey @bostoncityof this ones for you

How mean are you? Talking about my Yankees like that? Enjoy it while you can. ( even though I think you’ll be eliminated early in the playoffs)because someday the Yanks WILL be back on top.
MattTito23
Sox fans crack me up. I’d think you’d be more concerned with destroying the dreams of Baltimore and Toronto since they’re the teams you’re actually contending with

You obviously have been living under a rock for the last 20 years. This rivalry will never evaporate. 2003 and 2004 are still fresh on the minds of both fanbases.
Niekro
Arent Rivalries supposed to be back and forth its been more like a one sided slobber knocking for the past 100 years. I never bought the Yankees Red Sox being some great rivalry in sports one team was atrocious the other team was maybe the best in all of sports, it seemed to be created by ESPN more than actual baseball fans. I have no doubt the teams dislike each other though, to me a Rivalry takes more than dislike it takes competitive back and forth as well, the championships will never be close and pretty much no team in baseball ever will be, but the Red Sox are close to 200 games under .500 all time vs the Yankees too, some rivalry more like a one sided beat down.
coo coo
Wait a few more World Series wins
Bruin1012
Just gotta get to the playoffs and anything can happen. I am sure it is going to be a dogfight all the way in.
Bruin1012
I’m just happy it appears that the Sox are going to be in the chase this year.
deadmanonleave
Top respect to the decent Sox fans here jumping on the guy crowing about a championship not yet won. Far better to discuss how teams are doing and how they might deal without some godawful bias.
crushem1717
Tell me how you doing after the dog days of August and Sept. Yankees will rule!
braves4life1
Yankees get: Julio Teheran, Nick Markakis and Arodys Vizcaino
Braves get: Sanchez, Severino, Judge, and Betances
adyo4552
I think a right handed fly ball pitcher in YS is a terrinle fit. Lets be real too, if the Yankees traded even half of that list of their prospects they would set their rebuild back by a few years at least. Its a pretty awful trade. Braves should trade Freeman to the White Sox or another offense-strapped team, but thats neither here nor there.
mikey_mags
No I wouldn’t want any of those guys, the guys we are trading are better for the Yanks. Trading all of our youth we have accumulated in the last couple years for what scouts call a decent backend starter, a guy who just started closing and wouldn’t close on our team, and a shitty hitter on a bad contract who would have no spot in our OF.
conaboya
Teheran a backend starter? You’re an idiot.
BronxBombers14
Great deal for the braves. No way the Yankees pull the trigger on this deal.
bronxbombers
Lmao I can’t stop laughing
halos101
yet another horrible trade proposal from a braves fan. you braves fans do us a favor and please stop making them
LH
Does anyone else see how the Nationals could fit archer in with giolito, voth, and Lopez all so close? Having three young studs pretty much ready seems like even if gio or Ross was included or somehow removed from the rotation those guys would be next in line
AngelFan69
I still believe that the 2016 WS will be the BoSox vs. the Cubs…
yankeesfan681202
Red Sox don’t have the rotation to make it to the World Series. Price has not performed well at all and has a bad postseason resume, and while Wright is having a career year you never know with a knuckleballer, Pomeranz’s transition to AL is a big ?, and Porcello and the rotating backend of the rotation show flashes of potential, but remain inconsistent and therefore untrustworthy. A good offense is what the Sox have and that gets you in the playoffs, pitching wins it all for you and the lack that right now. Indians vs Cubs in the World Series.
killerbumblebee
I doubt the RedSox will be in any World Series this year. I think it’s Baltimore or Texas. Also , don’t discount the Washington Nationals.
Foreveryankees
Please Yankess sell!!
