Surprisingly, Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia has revived his career to the point that he might actually have value in a trade, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. The soon-to-be 36-year-old has bounced back from multiple underwhelming seasons in a row to post an excellent 3.17 ERA in 76 2/3 innings in 2016, through his strikeout and walk ratios per nine innings (7.16 and 3.52) are each below average and he’s on a $25MM salary through 2017. In addition to Sabathia, hot-hitting 39-year-old right fielder/designated hitter Carlos Beltran, left fielder Brett Gardner, catcher Brian McCann, third baseman Chase Headley, and starters Michael Pineda and Nathan Eovaldi are Yankees who could have value around the deadline (not to mention their much-ballyhooed relievers, of course). The only member of that group who’s set to become a free agent at season’s end is Beltran. As Cafardo points out, it’s currently up in the air whether the playoff hopeful Yankees would move any of these players, though he wonders if clinging to postseason dreams is the right course for the 39-41 club.
More inside stuff from Cafardo:
- Led by former Rays general manager and current president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers are in pursuit of Tampa Bay right-hander Chris Archer. The Rays aren’t planning on moving the 27-year-old as of now, though, which backs up FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal’s report from Saturday.
- The presence of senior vice president of baseball operations Frank Wren, formerly the Braves’ GM, could lead the Red Sox to go after Atlanta right-hander Julio Teheran. Wren – who’s high on Teheran – is Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski’s right-hand man, Cafardo notes, and could push him toward putting together a package for the 25-year-old.
- If they’re unable to swing a deal for Teheran, the Red Sox might turn their attention to Rays southpaw Matt Moore – in whom they’re interested. Moore, who has three more years of team control left via club options, also intrigues the Astros, Dodgers, Orioles, Royals, Yankees and previously reported Rangers.
- With the possible exception of right-handed reliever Zach McAllister, the Indians aren’t going to give up pitching to augment their offense. Further, the organization has a reputation for keeping its payroll low and avoiding big-money acquisitions, which could take it out of the running to pick up a well-compensated trade chip. Athletics third baseman Danny Valencia, who’s on an affordable $3.15MM salary this season and has another trip through arbitration scheduled, is a potential target for Cleveland.
- Hard-throwing Diamondbacks lefty Robbie Ray, who’s eighth in the majors in K/9 (10.42), is drawing interest from teams looking for starters. The 24-year-old has thrown 214 innings of 4.00 ERA ball dating to 2015 and won’t even become eligible for arbitration until after 2017, meaning he has four full seasons of club control remaining.
- The Marlins are aggressively pursuing pitching, as evidenced already by their acquisition of reliever Fernando Rodney and reported interest in starters Drew Pomeranz and Jake Odorizzi. However, the Fish might not have the prospects to land a significant arm for their rotation, writes Cafardo.
- Blue Jays scouts are keeping a close watch over the Astros’ system, so the two AL playoff contenders could have some kind of deal in the works.

Could an encarnacion for aj reed be a possibility maybe blue jays give a prospect and Astros give money too
Philliesfan4life
I was thinking the jays would make a trade for Freeman incase they don’t resign Encarnacion in the offseason
billdale
The Braves wouldn’t trade Freeman. They need all the offense they can get.
Philliesfan4life
Maybe , but I think they will have the money to spend next year and in 2018, with all the young pitching they have.
Sam.rhodes16
The Jays have a barren farm system in terms of prospects the Braves would want. Anyways, they have rowdy tellez who plays 1st and will be able to take over in 2017/2018
Philliesfan4life
True, but I believe this might be the year where the jays need to win because their line up will be thin next year if they don’t keep both Encarnacion and Bautista
Sam.rhodes16
So you agree there’s 0% chance of them acquiring freeman because they have no one good enough to trade for him?
Philliesfan4life
imo the jays spent most of their trade bait prospects on price and tulo last year
thebighurt619
The jays have the prospects to get a deal done for freeman. The questions becomes a. Would they part with the likes of urena, greene, foley, alford, harris, pentecost, and possibly others and b. Would the braves take a package comprised of talented guys in the low minors or do they want mlb ready or close to mlb ready pieces for freeman.
Gogerty
Don’t think the Jays have even the prospects to make it happen. Plus do not think there is anything on the ML roster (arbitration type assets) that they would part with while trying to make playoff push.
chieftoto
Not only do the Jays not have the prospects, not even close in fact, there would be the matter of Coppy’s surgical amputation of his right arm.
Gogerty
I agree with you sir, but I think his right arm night recover in a massive haul that also brings back a “hopeful” 1B of the future.
Priggs89
Why would the Astros do that?
RunDMC
They wouldn’t – sell the future for a few months of a power hitter? That is ridiculous.
tsolid 2
Spot on RUN!
eggy
The Astros are in the playoff hunt and still they would rather have marwin Gonzalez take first over aj reed so there are obviously red flags
Astros2333
What an awful trade proposal (For the Astros)! The beat First Base prospect in the game and money for a rental and a low prospect. Thank God you’re not a GM.
Ray Ray
There was a time when Jon Singleton was the best first base prospect in the league too. Just sayin.
froghorn
Well, the Astros GM has pulled off a couple recently that have been head scratchers. The Giles trade has been a bust so far, and what do we show for the Kazmir rental from last year. At least Fiers and Gomez are contributing some.
eggy
Who said a low prospect I was thinking more like Pentecost
eggy
A catcher is generally considered better than a first baseman so Pentecost and they still have a future
Philliesfan4life
I don’t think the rays would trade Chris Archer unless they are blown away by the package. The Marlins I could see making a run at Odorizzi , but it’s crazy that how many times he has been moved in his career. .
Michigan Dodger Fan
De Leon, Holmes, Verdugo, and Barnes get it done for archer?
Philliesfan4life
the rays I think would like that deal, but they need offense , Longoria is there by himself.
Michigan Dodger Fan
Could replace Holmes with Bellinger. Let De Leon fill archers role in the rotation, Verdugo is an OF, Bellinger is 1B/OF, and Barnes is like early Carlos Santana in he can play C/2B/3B. Also they get 4 of the Dodgers top 12 prospects, which might help
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Realistically I would love a Montas, Holmes, Johnson, Calhoun, Toles, Barnes but Archer isn’t getting traded so I can just spitball crazy trade idea. Most team want offense and most teams want to keep offense so I can’t see the Dodgers giving up both Bellinger and Verdugo. I can see them dipping into their pitching prospects. With Verdugo’ all star performance and hitting streak he’s going to be talked about a lot.
Valkyrie
The Rays lead the Dodgers in almost every significant offensive category. Keep up junior.
matthewan
Not sure if dodgers would want to trade bellinger especially with Gonzalez getting to that point and no other realistic options in the organization
mkeving
If they trade for a starter I hope they do it without giving up De Leon.
Michigan Dodger Fan
Ideally yeah. But I think it depends on the starter. Archer is controlled through 2019 with 2 club options on a real cheap contract. I’d be okay giving up De Leon for him. But not for some other starters that have been listed as trade options
Philliesfan4life
I kinda had the dodgers making a bigger block buster trade for maybe Jose Fernandez or Sonny Gray, but they would prolly ask for both Urias and Deleon in return plus others
bravesfan1234
Fernandez isn’t happening. The last time the Dodgers asked about him the Marlins wanted Urias, Seager, and at least two other high ceiling/elite prospects.
Philliesfan4life
Billy Beane would prolly ask the same in return if the dodgers asked for sonny gray
therealryan
Chris Archer has more value than Gray does right now. Since both became full time starters in 2014, their numbers are almost identical, but Archer has a much better contract with 2 additional years of control. Also, as bad as Archer has been this year, he still has a better ERA, FIP and xFIP than Gray. Archer should cost more in trade than Gray and considering his 2 extra years of control, it should be significantly more.
BlueSkyLA
Beane can ask for whatever he wants, but Gray hasn’t been himself all season, so that’s going to be an issue in dealing him for a big haul.
Valkyrie
If you don’t think getting Archer out of TB is at least as much of a “blockbuster” as Fernandez or Gray, you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Exactly. It’s a blockbuster trade without a doubt. Even if he’s having a rough season because of his track record and contract.
eggy
And that was before they were in the hunt
madmc44
Tehran is not the answer. The Sox answer is removing JF from the dugout and replacing him with Lovullo or just about any available manager.
A package that might include JBJ, Shaw, Buchholtz and Kimbrel with Cash Considerations would be my suggestion. If you want an ace you will have to part with Betts or Bogaerts and some of their top prospects. Move manager first—NOW.
As a Lifelong Sox fan it’s hard to say this team is not a playoff team–a 4 or 5 finish in the East again is where I see this current group finishing. Bring up Benintendi, Moncada, Devers and give them 1/2 a season to get their feet wet. They will surprise Red Sox Nation.
Austin0723
Devers is like 18 lol and the other two still need some time
RunDMC
Buchholz has NO value – none. Bud Norris has more value than Buchholz at this point. ATL does not want him. And though there are some in ATL that would like to see a reunion with Kimbrel, I don’t want a reunion with his contract. He’s not the pitcher he once was and won’t ever be again. A 60-win team does not need an elite closer. That should be a revolving door trying out pitchers to find the best option, just like how Vizcaino came to be. However, a package of JBJ and Shaw would be intriguing.
bravesfan1234
Closers are often overrated, overpaid, and replaceable.
Valkyrie
When you are talking to Sox fans, everything they have is over-rated. Prospects, washed up pitchers, that wreck of a stadium they play in. Its just the nature of RSN.
jp08
Until its the playoffs and your starter is at 110 pitches after 8 innings in a one run game.
Sam.rhodes16
What will that package get you?? Why’re you trying to compete AND trade away Kimbrel? JBJ is back to being cold after his torrid June. Buch has negative value. Kimbrel has no value to the Braves – hence, why they traded him while rebuilding. Shaw could be a good piece. That package won’t get you in shouting distance of Teheran. A package for him starts at moncada and goes up from there.
The Sox might not be comfortable with that, but it’ll take that package to move Teheran, a controllable and incredibly affordable high2/low1 starter. With DD’s propensity to move specs for established players and Wren’s presence in the FO, I wouldn’t be surprised if that type of trade was made.
Varitek'sMitt
Lifelong? Are you 12 or something? I honestly can’t take you seriously.
onlyringsmatter
No ace is worth Xander or Betts. They are all star players 23 years old under cheap team control.LOL
RunDMC
So how do you upgrade pitching? Do you trade one or both of Benintendi/Moncada or do you think you’re deep enough on the farm to get a quality controllable arm for less?
Or do you just fire Farrell and it will magically make everything better?
onlyringsmatter
This season is lost for the Red Sox.They should look to the future.
bravesfan1234
Given the way they’ve looked lately I’m inclined to agree with you. I also think there is a decent chance Wright regresses to his career averages. I don’t know what’s going on Price, but he better figure it out soon if they are going to have a chance.
chound
It’s far from a loss but if they wait till the trade deadline it damn well might be…
Ray Ray
How is the season lost? They are currently projected to win the AL East and are currently in a Wild Card spot. You must be one of those fans that is literally impossible to please.
Valkyrie
You haven’t been watching. They spent the first month or two playing last place teams and hitting the ball like crazy. Not surprising they ran up a deceiving record. Since then, their schedule has gotten a little more difficult, they’re not batting .900 as a team anymore and their real potential is showing itself. This would be an average team if it had any pitching. As it is, they are a BAD team. They just got some lucky scheduling and bashed their way to a bunch of wins. That’s not sustainable nor is winning with a pitching that bad, top to bottom.
Philliesfan4life
no ace like fernandez or sonny gray? I am pretty sure the red sox would trade Moncada or Benintendi
onlyringsmatter
I never mentioned Moncada or Benintendi. And Sonny Gray is garbage this season.I wouldn’t trade for him
thebighurt619
You do realize that a reason sonny gray hasn’t been himself this year is because vogt is one of the worst pitch framers in baseball right? Vogt was ok at it the season before, as evident by gray keeping his strike outs similar, but walks has jumped. That and his fb velocity is relatively the same, but he’s got somewhere around 16% hr/fb rates which is an abnormality compared to 9% his previous 2 years.
Id trade for gray hoping for a lesser deal than it would cost if he regains form and goes up during the winter. He had an awful may, regained form in june, bad start to july. And has 2 previous years of dominance and 3.5 years of control.
seamaholic 2
Framing has at best marginal impact. Gray’s struggles have little to do with his catcher.
southi
And why would Hill show so much improvement if Gray’s struggles was mainly caused by poor framing from Athletics catching?
pgmitchell
you are mad!
RunDMC
It’s so odd they keep harping on the Frank Wren connection like it has some weight. Do you really think DD would trust Wren enough to reset the farm and trade away some of their best prospects? As a Braves fan, I’d love to see it happen – I’d love to see Benintendi (and Moncada?) in ATL – but I can’t see this scenario.
tsolid 2
He trusted Wren enough to give him a Job. Not saying he will reset that farm, but influence can be a heck of a thing on DD
Gogerty
Think they are just hitting that angle now. It has not been harped on as much and gives the story a new, interesting twist.
Gogerty
Hey Run, what are your thoughts on this; if Boston were to be light on the idea on Moncada, Braves sending Albies back to ease that concern?
Julio, Markakis, Albies for Moncada, Devers, Benintendi and pieces in between?
fireboss
If he listens to Wren The Red Sox will soon have no prospects and a group of one year wonders.
Drombowsky has shown he’ll trade prospects to win now and Wren thinks that his mentor is conservative in that arena. It’s a perfect storm that threatens the long term Sox success.
To get Teheran the duo will have to dramatically overpay to level I’m not sure even they could live with.
While the Braves are deep in pitching prospects they lack dependable, controllable experience in the rotation so any trade would force them into the market as well. It makes no sense to do that for any trade I’d offer them and I’m a Braves fan.
Good luck with Wren; you’ll need it.
bravesfan1234
Wren is terrible. He royally screwed up our farm system and apparently drove off many of our best scouts because people in our org hated working for him. As soon as he was fired a lot of them came back. Chipper made a public comment about it. Looking back on his drafts with the Braves just shows how awful he is. I don’t know why anybody would listen to him.
SoCalBrave
The only good thing about Wren were some of the trades he made. I think that’s the reason the Red Sox have him.
chound
I’d say the only good thing about Wren is that when he’s told to go for it… he goes all in with nothing held back. So its exciting for about a month and then its awful there after… When Atlanta show’d its hand for the Uptons, nearly every fan was in love with the idea. Turns out after the fact that it was awful but very few expected that.
bravesfan1234
Some of the trades he made were alright. He managed to get Justin Upton for basically a couple utility players and a reliever. But he also made some horrible signings. Dan Uggla, Melvin Upton, Chris Johnson, Kawakami, etc. He never seemed to scout particularly well.
disgruntledreader 2
Interesting duality in some of the media narratives right now. Sabathia, who has career-low K rates, career-high BB rates, isn’t going deep in games, and is owed $35M “might actually have trade value.” Melvin Upton Jr, meanwhile, is in year two of his return to providing value, is owed a bit more than half of that, but will have to be given away according to the same narratives.
rmullig2
Starting pitching is at a premium now. There are a lot of outfielders out there (Bruce, Reddick, Beltran, Valencia) but almost no starting pitching. CC appears to have adjusted to having lower velocity and having to pitch to contact. He’s been the Yankees’ best starter this season and is a team leader. Of course he has value. Upton is mentally frail, put him into a pennant race now and you don’t know if he regresses back to his Atlanta form.
jakegreenberg24
With their current trade values, both CC and Melvin could probably net one top 15 prospect from the average system. I could see lots of skepticism on the market that they continue to perform at this high a level, however.
jakegreenberg24
Yankees send Eovaldi/Gardner/Ellsbiry and Andrew Miller to Cubs for Dylan Cease, Eloy Jimenez, Jeimer Candelario, and Javier Baez/Gleybar Torres.
Thoughts?
Philliesfan4life
thats an over pay for the cubs, no way the cubs do that. But maybe Torres or Ian Happ plus vogelbach and others for Miller. no way that the cubs give up schwarber for him
A'sfaninUK
Worst trade idea I’ve seen on here in a while. Just pointless for the Cubs. They dont need anyone in that group other than Miller, who’d probably move to a setup role but those first 3 guys aren’t going anywhere and have no place on that Cubs team.
Valkyrie
Benefiting the Cubs wasn’t the point of that trade proposal though was it. Dumping more of the Yankees old man, big contract baggage was. The only thing keeping Yankees fans from being the most unrealistic Junior GMs in the world is Red Sox fans.
A'sfaninUK
If Oakland sends Valencia to Clevo, Zimmer and Frazier better be coming back. No reason to trade him otherwise, unless it’s a huge haul like that.
BoldyMinnesota
Looks like valencias staying in Oakland then
jp08
Yep
giants51
If Boston must trade some of there young talent the should focus on young talent in return……
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
The Rays are in the cat bird seat in terms of pitching assets. There is no denying that. They need to lock up Snell and build around Snell. Honeywell is a major name to watch a year or two out. There is no reason to move Archer, Oddorrizi, Smyley, and Cobb until the offseason unless there are utter hauls. If the Rays play this right they can stock both roster and pipeline.
baronbeard
Just like their trades for Shields and Garza. Silverman seems to also be buying into that mindset with the trades he has made. Most of which have stocked up the low level minors teams with exciting prospects.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Archer, Myers, Odorrizzi, Guyer, Souza and Bauers I would say that’s pretty good return for Shields and Garza. It’s sad to see teams in constant rebuild mode but they’ve had some great hauls. Granted Davis found his niche and that’s all that needs to be said. The Rays wouldn’t have been able to pay him so win for them I guess.
rangerfan23
I can see Rangers and rays making a trade. Matt Moore or Chris archer plus a bullpen lefty for 4 or 5 minor leaguers.
braves4life1
Braves Send: Teheran, Albeis, and Vizcaino
Boston Sends: Moncada, Benintendi, and Swihart
onlyringsmatter
Braves fans really really really need a reality check. That is something you send for Fernandez or Sale not Teheran
bravesguru
Reasonable deal if the Braves keep Albies and Vizcaino
Bobby Sweet
How do people actually believe this? If an “ace” like Julio Teheran is worth 2 of the top 15 prospects in baseball, what is a real ace, like Fernandez worth? The deed to your home park? Absolutely ridiculous.
SoCalBrave
According to the Marlins, Seager, Pederson, Urias and more. In other words, 3 top 5 prospects starts the conversation.
bravesguru
Teheran has a much higher excess value on his contract than Shelby Miler had at the time of the trade. Miller was +72Million and Teheran is +107Million. Thus the Braves should expect more in a deal. A deal should look something like:
Red Sox: Blake Swihart plus Yoan Moncada and Andrew Benintendi.
Astros: Preston Tucker plus Alex Bregman and AJ Reed.
Dodgers: Joc Peterson plus Jose De Leon and Austin Barnes.
Yankees: Gary Sanchez plus Aaron Judge and Domingo Acevedo.
Cubs: Javier Baez plus Willson Contreras and Ian Happ.
Rangers: Nomar Mazara plus Joey Gallo and Lewis Brinson.
Diamondbacks: Jean Segura plus Braden Shipley and Socrites Britto.
Pirates: Sterling Marte plus Josh Bell and Austin Meadows.
Colorado Rockies: Nolan Arenado.
Los Angeles Angels: Mike Trout.
Baltimore Orioles: Manny Machado.
goducksgoagogo
Please stop, guru, please….
Bobby Sweet
Nobody drink the water in Atlanta, it’s obviously been contaminated.
SoCalBrave
we know you can copy and paste, so please stop. Yes, Teheran has more trade value than Shelby did, but don’t forget that the diamondbacks overpaid by a lot. So you can’t really use that trade as a measure for what we can expect for Teheran. I think Teheran, Albies and Vizcaino for Moncada and Benintendi with a pitching prospect like Steen or Ball (No Swihart) would be reasonable. The Red Sox get a reliable #2 starter and a shut down late inning reliever both with years of control and a top second/SS prospect to take place of Moncada. The Braves get the power hitting outfielder they desire and a more advanced infielder prospect to pair with Swanson along with a somewhat high ceiling but far away pitcher to replace Teheran.

Must be a Red Sox Troll
bravesguru
Must be a Boston troll who thinks all the prospects are all-stars.
