Angels lefty C.J. Wilson will undergo surgery on his left shoulder, per a club announcement. The procedure will address “fraying” in his labrum and rotator cuff and will keep him out until 2017.
Wilson, 35, has simply not shown progress after dealing with shoulder soreness this spring. He has yet to appear in the majors this season, and also had his 2015 season cut short by arm surgery — that time to remove bone chips from his elbow.
With the news, Wilson will hit the open market without returning to the bump for the Halos. He joined the organization on a five-year, $77.5MM free agent contract before the 2012 season.
That signing may not have paid off quite as much as hoped, but Wilson was useful for Los Angeles over his four years of active duty with the club. All told, Wilson contributed 722 1/3 innings of 3.87 ERA pitching, with 7.7 K/9 against 3.8 BB/9.
Depending upon how his rehab goes, Wilson could feature as an interesting bounceback candidate on the open market. Teams are always in need of sturdy, back-of-the-rotation arms, and we’ve seen fairly significant guarantees handed out to similarly-accomplished pitchers who have recent injury concerns.
HaloShane
Okay. So dude was once a baseball player…
Kingmojo101
Dead season anyway. Wish mlb can adopt an amnesty clause like the nba.
Cam
Nah – if the Angels were smart, they’d have insurance on his contract.
If they don’t, well, they aren’t smart, and they deserve to get stuck with the sunk cost.
Senioreditor
I’m guessing he’s done at least until 2018 or longer.
bkbkbk
There was a loud internal theory going around that after he was criticized bymamagement vocslly for supporting Hamiltons departure that he actively decided to not throw for the halos again. He was very well liked for a while, but I think he leaves on a pretty sour note.
agentx
Maybe, though Arte Moreno may also want to consider the possibility that instead of being surrounded by wrong-headed, intransigent, or otherwise difficult personalities whom the Angels must constantly jettison that Moreno himself actually may be the problem.
ryanw-2
So Hamilton relapses and breaks a promise he made to Arte Moreno to stay clean, but it’s Arte Moreno’s fault?
halos101
partly. most is hamiltons fault and that’s reality. But Moreno should have been a little smarter about who he throws his money at
agentx
No, Hamilton’s relapse wasn’t Moreno’s fault. Moreno’s petulance about pointedly *not* saying whether Hamilton would play for the Angels again when he was still under contract and then allowing Carpino torch Hamilton in the press before his MiLB rehab stint was up exhibited very poor crisis and personnel management on Moreno’s part.
agentx
DiPoto vs. Scioscia went down poorly and very publicly as well. Hard to believe there was nothing Moreno could do to mitigate that embarrassment.
halos101
Good. If he came back and joined rotation it would have bumped someone out that’s way better than him. I try to keep it positive, but he’s a trash player with a trash contract. Angels fans will never forget how he gave up on our team in the middle of a playoff chase… good riddance cj
Halo27
Said the same thing a few weeks ago. He’s a quitter. Totally threw a turd against the Royals. He may be very intelligent, but he doesn’t have the heart that Weaver does. Quitter!!!
Cam
As opposed to the turds Weaver has been throwing up all year? Heart won’t get his fastball to break a pane of glass.
At this stage – Weaver needs to show some hustle filling up the bubble gum buckets, and have absolutely nothing to do with an MLB mound.
halos101
weavers getting paid a lot to pitch. He’s doing what he can and is an absolute bulldog out there. Wilson is being paid a ton to do absolutely do nothing and quit in a team in a playoff hunt (not this year). The weaver criticism needs to stop. If he could he wouldn’t be throwing so slow. Look at what he’s done for this franchise and how hard he’s still trying.
ryanw-2
That’s ridiculous. The guy is injured and has been dealing with nagging arm injuries more than half the time he’s been with the Angels. He has no control over that. And you need to find some evidence and a way to quantify him “quitting” on the team, which there really is none. It’s all media narratives you’re choosing to believe rather than following what’s actually going on with your team. You might want to consider these things before bashing a player.
kahnkobra
mlb doesn’t need an amnesty clause, they don’t have a salary cap
McConaughey'sLincoln
Took the words out of my mouth
A'sfaninUK
So the Angels paid him $77.5M to throw 772 innings of 3.87 ERA/3.95 FIP ball.
That’s $100,349.60 an inning.
Cam
Probably about right – $25mil / 200 IP a year is 125,000 an inning.
halos101
Hopefully I never hear of cj Wilson again.
halos101
Wilson is a disgrace to uniform he’s wearing
woodhead1986
boy, you Halos fans are pretty butthurt. The guy is hurt folks! The doctors aren’t making up diagnoses. pitching is not only his livelihood but his life’s passion. Do you really think he’s “quitting” on that? Its a bad contract, it happens, don’t take it so personally.
angelsinthetroutfield
Yeah, he’s pretty much hated by most of the Halo faithful. To be honest I didn’t feel the same as the majority towards him though. He contributed as expected through most of his contract (much better than Hamilton and even Pujols) and I give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to being injured. I have a hard time believing the guy would literally refuse to pitch despite being healthy.
halos101
you aren’t a passionate Angels fan. If you were, you would understand why he’s hated so much.
angelsinthetroutfield
I understand why. Just choose not to believe that he quit on the club due to the Hamilton debacle. Was he frustrating? At times. Was he the notorious nibbler? Almost always. But the fact of the matter is not everyone has the ironman mentailty and it’s purely speculation that he “quit” during last yrs playoff run.
halos101
he did quit. no two ways about it. he may have had shoulder discomfort, I’m not saying he completely made up an injury. but I guarentee you if that was weaver he would’ve pitched through it like a true player would.
angelsinthetroutfield
so because he’s not Weave (in terms of mentality) he’s a bum? I think you’re setting the barometer pretty high when it comes to selflessly playing injured. There are plenty of players who missed time due to less. CJ is hardly the worst IMO.
pd14athletics
As an A’s fan I have zero sympathy for Wilson, all of us can’t stand the guy. That said, it doesn’t stop us from looking at the Angels fans dogging him and thinking you guys are entitled idiots. He’s pitched through bone spurs, and much of the season with issues necessitating surgery. If he’d broken his arm like Weaver had, you would probably have expected Wilson to pitch through that as well.
ryanw-2
He did pitch through injury!!! Find actual evidence. What team are you following?
ryanw-2
That’s the problem with the Angels fan base. Orange County entitlement culture. Don’t take any responsibility as a fan, just expect the entertainment to come to you and rely on media narratives because it’s easier than following what’s actually going on with your team. I’ve been a die hard Angels fan for almost 30 years and I can tell you right now it was an entirely different culture with more loyal and informed fans, especially before 2002…
One Fan
Sorry Halos101 but Wilson did not quit! Grow up dude
ryanw-2
Wrong! Weaver would not pitch through soreness from scar tissue in his labrum and rotator cuff. The latter is code for his career is over. Weaver would be in the same boat. And there’s a fine line between playing hurt and hurting your team. I pitched on a torn meniscus in my right knee (push off leg) for four months and that knee took my shoulder with it…
ryanw-2
He’s not hated by the fan base. He’s hated by a handful of so-called fans who seem to follow media narratives than their actual team, or are just projecting their personal issues and using CJ as a punching bag because they don’t have to say it to his face…
halos101
no krol he is hated by most of the fan base. most fans would hate a guy that doesn’t live up to a big contract or else you just don’t care about your team. And what are you comparing now to before 2002 for? completely different time with social media growing and bigger contracts. Guarentee your wrong that not as many fans were mad at a player for being a complete bust…One fan- he did quit, why do you think teammates were upset with him?
satan
What a terrible investment he turned out to be.
ryanw-2
Not really. 5 years, $77 million is chump change for a starting pitcher these days.
halos101
chump change? 15 mill a year is not “chump change” man
metseventually 2
How the Angels are choosing not to rebuild is beyond me…
halos101
agreed. I feel like it’s artes choice not to rebuild
ryanw-2
Because they have the resources to rebuild and contend at the same time. Teams that have to fully rebuild are teams that are lower on the payroll bracket. The Angels just crossed the luxury tax threshold. That’s what you do when you’re a filthy rich organization in the second biggest market in the country.
halos101
having the resources to buy people shouldn’t mean you shouldn’t rebuild. It means you should do a quicker rebuild. Angels don’t need a multi year rebuild, but they do have to start getting some minor league talent
Yamsi12
I see CJ still has sand in his vagina over the whole Hamilton thing.
BoldyMinnesota
What’s wrong with people? Ya, I’m sure he’s getting an unnecessary surgery just to not pitch for the Angels
T_Rexx2
People don’t get surgery twice in order to fake an injury… That just doesn’t happen.
Psychguy
Friedman will pick him up. He likes signing players with injury histories.
jules
No reason to continue wasting ink, time or thought on CJ Wilson. He was a bad signing by Moreno along with Hamilton and Pujols (about 70 mil per year all together). Let us spend some time and thought in the future, what are the Angels going to do in 2017 and 2018., because this season is over…
ryanw-2
It’s quite amusing seeing the dumb comments about CJ quitting on his team. Here’s a lesson in logic: in no way does CJ benefit from any of this. The guy pitched while injured more than half the time he’s been able to pitch for the Angels. If one actually believes he’s doing all of this on purpose then I question their intelligence and/or mental stability.
Yamsi12
Or the mental stability of CJ.
halos101
I don’t think people are questioning that he’s getting the surgery for no reason.
One Fan
Well I have to say that I now understand why everyone says the Angels fan base is about the dumbest people in the country
halos101
Not too many people say that. Angels fans are great. But when you dislike a signing as much as I do for Wilson, you tend to have some anger. understandable if you actually cared about your team…
