Today, we’re proud to announce an acquisition of our own! Trade Rumors has purchased the Roster Resource website, which was formerly known as MLB Depth Charts before expanding into other sports. Additionally, we’ve hired the site’s creator, Jason Martinez. Jason will continue to obsessively update depth charts and roster information quickly and accurately for all MLB, NBA, and NFL teams, and he’ll also contribute articles here at MLBTR.
The depth charts and roster information will continue to live at Roster Resource for now, though it is officially under the Trade Rumors umbrella. You’ll see us begin linking more to the Roster Resource depth charts in our posts, as we feel this information is a perfect fit for readers of MLB Trade Rumors, Hoops Rumors, and Pro Football Rumors. We are striving to bring you the best possible coverage of transaction-related news as well as depth charts and roster information you can consult for further analysis.
We’d love your feedback on Roster Resource, whether through comments on this post, replies on Twitter, or messages through our contact form. We’ve already got a number of improvements planned. Below, I’ve linked to depth charts for each of the 30 teams, which is the heart of what the site offers.

I think adding in contract information would be great. And for minor league players, how many years of team control they’re under.
I looked it over pretty quickly – but i didn’t see that information.
For MLB, there is also a separate Team Information page for each that does contain much of that info. We need to evaluate how we want to present all this info. Example:
rosterresource.com/mlb-chicago-cubs-info/
Awesome – thanks
Tremendous addition Tim.
Truly does add to what the site has to currently offer.
It’s already there and you’ll be amazed at what some teams are paying players or nonplayers. I like how the Rangers are actually getting 30 mil per year from other teams. Lol
Cool I love that site.
Great news. Any update on the creation of the hockey rumors site? When is it planned to be up and running?
Just between you and me, we had a soft launch of our hockey site yesterday:
prohockeyrumors.com/
Awesome. Just bookmarked it!
It looks great, Tim. When is it expected to be running on the app?
I’m thinking around September we’ll have it in the app. Tentatively.
This is great! I try to tell everyone how awesome both sites are! It pains me how much people still go to crappy sites for info.
I look forward to seeing it merge with the awesomeness of TR!
Will Roster Resource and prohockeyrumors be introduced to the trade rumors app?
Hockey should be pretty easy to integrate into the Trade Rumors app, just adding a fourth sport. However, I want to wait a couple of months as we get our feet under us. There are always some bugs to iron out with a new site.
RR would be tricky to add to the app. Before we dig into that, we are going to try to make all of its pages mobile-friendly, on the web, by year’s end.
I feel like the info at RR, perhaps coupled with our trackers, could support a second app. We have some thinking to do.
Hits for power, can slot him into the middle of the lineup and plus fielding!! Obviously we will have to evaluate who won this one down the road but right now it looks like a one sided deal.

i applaud your being creative and looking for ways to improve and expand the site. I’ll be honest, i’ve never used rosterresource before but I can see the value. good luck with the integration.
WOW! I hadn’t heard of RR before. I’m like a kid in a candy store! Good move!
I was thinking the same thing! How have I never heard of this site full of awesomeness!?!?
Congratulations. I think this can only enhance the user experience. Keep up the great work
awesome! 2 sites I use regularly under one umbrella!
Although I never heard of it before, I think this website contains a lot of valuable information and can certainly add a lot to the trade rumors site..
One thing that should be improved is the presentation. I think the font quite hard to read and is very small. The bright colors used on some fields don’t help with that. Furthermore, it is not always clear what these colors indicate. An example: In the ‘go-to lineup’ section on the TB Rays page, the fact that Corey Dickerson bats left handed is indicated with red, while this is not done for Brad Miller and Logan Morrison. This is also the case for the right-handed Mikie Mahtook on the bench. I can not work out why this.
Brad Miller and Logan Morrison are not part of a platoon in Jason Martinez’s opinion but Mahtook/Dickerson are.
I had not heard of Roster Resource or MLB Depth Charts before and thought it would be a substitute for baseball-reference links of players upon first reading this article. But looking through the site, it’s extremely impressive. There is a lot of information that has been boiled down and color-coded for quick reference. This is going to greatly enhance articles on this site.
The few suggestions I have on initial glance are:
1) a couple columns could be a bit clearer. There are several acronymns
2) a link to player profiles on baseball-reference would be quite useful
3) an ability to sort
4) I noticed a few very minor errors (maybe just my browser) Duane Underwood Jr. and Ian Rice on the Cubs’ roster both have flags that are 1 pixel or so in height
There may already be answers/rebuttal to all of my points. I look forward to seeing where this goes from here.
Is there a Twitter account set up for the pro hockey rumors website?
Whoa !
Excellent…quick glance shows alot of great info !
Best of Luck to all !!!
Spotrac? Cots?
Do they have a way to see each players stat line at each individual ball park over their careers? I think cbs or fox does but its a pain to find through googling
Great news for Jason Martinez! He’s worked hard for nearly a decade on that site, great to see him get the recognition he deserves.
Great news! I have both sites open on my phone pretty much constantly for quick reference. Classy and smart move keeping Jason on board as well!
This site just keeps getting better and better. RR was an excellent pickup. Nice work!
Happy for the staff of both websites as I’m a big fan and frequent user of both. The merger almost makes too much sense…
However, I noticed that rosterresource doesn’t have the Wrestling rosters anymore, is that because of the merger?
This is pretty cool. Congrats guys!
Woohoo! Two awesome sites combining their excellence.
Good pick-up, neither you nor I will be disappointed. His database as they say, “Will complete you.”
what a great resource for my favorite website! as usual trade rumors continues to crush it deep!
This is epic. I’ve been using both sites for years and now I get them both in one. Plus Jason is an amazing dude who loves what he does. I’m happy for you both
I found the link to RR a few years ago through baseball prospectus. A very informative and update site. Glad to hear it’s part of the mlbtraderumors team. Can’t wait for hockey rumours either.
Or like it if Roster Respurces site was more visually appealing. Easier to sort stuff, a simpler design, etc. the way it is right now, especially on mobile, the data just kind of smacks you in the face. Congrats to MLBTR though! I couldn’t be happier for you guys, keep up the good work!
I’m excited for this, Congratz guys!!
Lots of great info, and while I appreciate some color coding, it’s a little over the top and a killer on the eyes.
This combines two of my three most accessed MLB info sites! MLBdepthcharts has kept me ahead of the curve for several years. I recently requested Mr. Martinez to reprise his Knocking on the Door feature and was happy to see that as his first submission here. The third site, by the way, is Fantasy Rundown all the news in one place..
Well done.
This looks great Tim, It will definitely make the overall site better. Probably too soon for corrections but the Padres do still have a rule 5, Perdomo. He shows in the bulk data but shows as a zero in the roll up table.
Great move! Roster Resource is an excellent site.
I’m not big on change, but if this is what is best for both sites, then I’m all for it.
The best thing about MLBDepthCharts/RosterResource from Day 1 was the fact it was far and away the most up-to-date source for Depth Charts, including tracking the 25-man Rosters and 40-Man Rosters. I would think this merge would only make it easier for that to be the case, but you never know. I fear when you try to grow, sometimes sacrifices and compromises are made. Jason was always able to add more features while still maintaining the core functionality that put MLBDepthCharts on the map in the first place. I hope that can continue with this merge.
Additionally, I, too, consider “Knocking on the Door” the best of the “extras” at MLBDepthCharts, so it is encouraging to see that be Jason’s first contribution here at MLBTR.
Tim, This might be a difficult ask, but, I’d appreciate your honest assessment.
I used to be a user of Roster Resource when it was independent. When it was acquired by FanGraphs, I became a subscriber … but primarily for RR.
Now that MLBTR is acquiring RR, is there a significant rationale why one should continue to subscribe to FanGraphs? I am NOT denigrating FanGraphs, but RR was my primary reason for using FG.
Also, while you may have mentioned it in one of the responses above, when to you expect to have RR integrated to the MLBTR website, and in what manner … as a masthead option?
Thanks, and congratulations,
Will
