The Phillies have designated utilityman Emmanuel Burriss for assignment, the team announced. His roster spot will go to the just-acquired Jimmy Paredes.
Burriss, 31, got his first substantial crack at the majors since 2012 this year with the Phils. (He did appear briefly last year with the Nationals.) Previously, he played a significant reserve role over a five-year span with the Giants.
Despite plenty of opportunity to go around on the current Phillies roster, Burries only managed to pick up 36 plate appearances over 27 games. He owns a meager .121/.194/.212 batting line on the year.
I don’t even know why the Phillies took Burriss on the opening day roster.

He had a really good spring
He OPS’d .793 without a HR, so not really.
If I remember correctly, the general buzz was that he had some really slick D at 1B, plus he was physically capable of backing up multiple infield positions, and was pretty fast.
When your 1B D consists of Howard and Ruf, and you’re not expecting to compete, I guess that’s a move you don’t have to not make… But Mackanin used him as the first PH bat in almost every game, and that was nauseating.
What is he doing with his bat in that picture? Is he trying to push a bunt somewhere? He looks like he’s swinging an oar.
Burriss may the worst player on a MLB roster. Only redeeming qualities are good hair and a batting avg lower than ryan Howard
