The Padres have designated catcher Hector Sanchez for assignment, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports on Twitter. Infielder/outfielder Ryan Schimpf was selected to take his roster spot.

Sanchez, 26, was claimed off waivers from the White Sox in mid-May. He saw only 18 plate appearances for San Diego, though he did manage five hits (including a double and a homer). Long a reserve for the division-rival Giants, Sanchez owns a career .240/.276/.348 bating line over 663 plate appearances at the major league level.
As for Schimpf, this represents the first MLB opportunity after eight seasons in the minors. The 28-year-old utilityman has had some impressive stretches at the plate, none moreso than his recent run at Triple-A El Paso. Over 190 plate appearances on the year, Sanchez owns a .355/.432/.729 slash with 15 long balls.

It is about time he got a shot. He is killing the PCL at a .355 clip with 14 HRs. That is most on the team and Sanchez has mostly rode the pine since we claimed him. I get the PCL is notoriously hitter friendly but glad he gets a shot. Maybe we DFA Rosales now and give Dickerson a go. I like Rosales but he is under the Mendoza line and hasn’t inspired much confidence with any other skills.

No point in having Dickerson sitting watching (like Jankowski). They shouldn’t recall Dickerson until one or more outfielders are moved before the deadline.

Blue Jays should sign this guy.

Not to nit pic just pointing out that on the bottom you should have put Schimpf instead on Sanchez.

The Rays should try and pick him up. He’d be an upgrade there.

Always liked to see him play. Hope he can find a spot to start, switch hitter with a good bat. Rays would make this guy into a good catcher as they seem to do good with catchers that have been in the league for some time

This guy will be a Pirate in about 15 minutes

I am excited for the kid to get a shot…I hope he sees more time than Sanchez did cause riding the pine in the bigs sucks for his advancement. As for his “killing it” in the PCL…you do know that there is a HUGE Grand Canyon of difference between AAA and the bigs. Literally thousands of guys have “killed it” in AAA only to flounder in the show. Lets not jinx this kid before he even sees a pitch. I hope for the best in his career.
As for Sanchez I hope he gets a job somewhere. I liked his attitude and he absolutely got his hacks when he went to the plate. Good kid.
