The Mets bringing back soon-to-be free agent shortstop Jose Reyes is a “long shot,” a source told Newsday’s David Lennon, who reports that the door isn’t closed on the possibility. As of now, the Mets are in wait-and-see mode with the 33-year-old Reyes, whom the Rockies designated for assignment earlier this week on the heels of a subpar 2015 showing and, more importantly, a 52-game domestic violence suspension. Reyes would bring much-needed speed to a Mets team with the fewest stolen bases in the National League (13), notes Lennon, who adds that he’d come at a cheap price and, unlike other options, wouldn’t require the club to trade prospects. If the Mets do reunite with Reyes, they’d likely put him at second base and move Neil Walker to third to replace the injured David Wright, per Lennon. During his Mets tenure from 2003-11, Reyes hit a terrific .292/.341/.441 in 4,840 plate appearances, racked up 380 steals, made the All-Star team four times and accounted for 30.7 fWAR.
More from Queens and two other NL destinations:
- The Mets agreed to trade right-hander Zack Wheeler to the Brewers last summer for Carlos Gomez, but that deal fell through because of concerns over the outfielder’s health. A year later, the Mets have “close to zero interest” in using Wheeler as deadline trade bait, a source informed Lennon. Wheeler could return next month from 2015 Tommy John surgery, and the Mets regard him as either a key down-the-stretch piece in a potential six-man rotation or an option for their bullpen.
- Padres ace Tyson Ross threw a bullpen session Saturday, his first since succumbing to right shoulder inflammation in early April, according to Carlos Collazo of MLB.com. Ross remains a long way off from returning to the majors, though, said manager Andy Green. That would seem to decrease the already fading chances of Ross going anywhere prior to the deadline.
- One of Ross’ rotation mates, fellow righty Andrew Cashner, has been on the disabled list since June 11 with a strained neck. Cashner still isn’t ready to throw a BP session and will miss longer than the minimum 15 days as a result, tweets AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. Cashner, like Ross, was regarded as a valuable trade chip for the Padres entering the season. However, the 29-year-old Cashner has likely hurt his stock with two DL stints and less-than-stellar production (4.75 ERA, 6.1 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9 across 53 innings).
- Cubs catcher/outfielder Kyle Schwarber is “hitting all his range of motion checkpoints exactly on schedule,” president of baseball operations Theo Epstein told Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune. Schwarber, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL and LCL in his left knee on April 7, is currently on track to return for spring training next year. In the meantime, he assisted the Cubs during the amateur draft earlier this month. “’Schwarbs’ sat in the draft room with us while the team was away,” said Epstein. “He’s always looking for ways to contribute to the organization. He added some levity to the room.”

I think a team that doesn’t care about his baggage should absolutely give Reyes a shot. With the Jays, he hit .285/.322/.385 with speed and some pop (17 doubles), so it’s not like hes a worthless 2B option. The White Sox could use him if Anderson struggles, and can DH him if Garcia/Shuck don’t hit.

Fixed. Thanks.

As aets fan a reunion with Reyes would be awesome. He can provide the spark that are team is missing.

Spark of what?

I’m a Cub fan 3 cheers for the Mets for having a pair
jleusn
Schwarber is a great player and locker room presence, BUT I don’t see him fitting on the Cubs much longer if Contreras impresses behind the plate. Kyle is below average in the OF and thats the only position he will play if the Cubs want him in the lineup everyday. I would propose a trade to LAA for CF Mike Trout. Hear me out…Schwarber, Soler, Torres, Underwood, and Happ for Trout should do it. Cubs would play him in CF, Almora in LF, and JHey in RF. Best defensive OF in the league by far. Put Trout in the 3 spot, pushing Bryzzo each back a spot with Zobrist/JHey at 1 and 2. Contreras at catcher for good, Baez being the swiss-army knife all around the diamond, with Szczur, Montero, and LaStella off the bench as well. 2017 would be a cake walk
ABCD
Theo will never trade him. Kyle is such a good boy.
theo2016
Almora is a better cf than trout, defensively that is.
TBaggins
No that should not do it… A yearly MVP candidate does not get traded for an injured DH, a below replacement OF and a couple prospects.

LoL Cubs fans…
bsteady powers
Dude those are 5 top prospects. If the Angels had any sense they would take that
bsteady powers
Maybe one more arm
DVail79
Trout would cost so much more than that offer … Just to make it interesting for the Angels the Cubs would need to offer Almora Schwarber McKinney Hendricks Underwood Happ and probably Contreras. Now that wouldn’t make sense for the Cubs even getting the great Mike Trout but what incentive does Anaheim have to even listen to a deal for a perrenial MVP candidate who’s on a majorly team friendly contract unless they get exactly what they’d want and more? I’m not even saying the Angels would agree to this deal but its the bottom level of a deal that MIGHT get them to listen

Lol my sides
nymlagares
That’s not a bad idea, but keep in mind you’d be losing a ton of very strong depth so if someone got hurt or heyward left after 2018/2019 (opt out) they might run into a bit of trouble. It does seem fairly realistic though and it would at a minimum make the Angels pick up the phone
pullhitter445
That package your proposing for trout is nowhere near the return LAA would receive way more. Soler can’t stay healthy and underperforms defensively and offensively often. Torres, underwood, and happ fart noise. Would need Baez tossed in there, LAA needs a starting pitching help also so the Cubs have no pitching in the minors. Cubs have no shot of getting trout, doesn’t even make sense for them to trade for him.
hojostache
Agreed.
Trout is a Bryant+ type trade. Would the Cubs do that…probably not, but that is the kind of talent it’d take to pry him from LAA. A second tier package for arguably the best everyday player in the game (Harper is right there). Trout isn’t moving and the Cubs will most likely trade for a solid but not sexy reliever so they can hang onto their top prospects.
thebare
You don’t trade the farm for 1 super star
beauvandertulip
Not a bad trade. But I don’t think the Angels are smart enough to move him. They hold onto pieces when their shot of anything is gone
gse71
No GM in their right mind trades Trout for that. If the Angels are even talking trade they are asking for Bryant just to start off talks. It’s that simple.
As far as Schwarber is concerned, he may be Theo’s boy right now but he is completely over rated. We are talking about a catcher that isn’t good enough to catch at the big league level. He isn’t good enough for the outfield either. His best position may be first but it may be part time dh too.
andreasd
Reyes, despite all the baggage, is ideal right now for the Mets. If he still has he laser arm I remember, he can potentially plug in at 3rd, but you could also move Cabrera and Walker to 3rd, and platoon Flores at 1st with Loney. Aside from the media circus, there’s no risk. As chapman has shown, if you perform, people will move on. Reyes gives us an actual leadoff man (even if his legs aren’t what they used to be) and pushes Grandy to an RBI spot where he should be. It lengthens our line up significantly..if he performs obviously.
To me, this is the best option. Zero risk, where you can cut him if he doesn’t work out. No trading prospects. An important bat in a position/line up spot we need (after we reconfigure infield). Otherwise, we need a big bat at 3rd or middle infield. Valencia/Lowrie wont cut it in my opinion.
staypuft
Valencia won’t cut it but Reyes will? Lol what?
andreasd
We’ll have to significantly overpay for Valencia which I’m not comfortable with. The point I was making is there is 0 risk with Reyes and gives us an area of need (lead off), and he was batting well with Toronto before the trade. Thus shifting Grandy to an power role. If not, I rather overpay for a legit power bat which Valencia is not.

Hard to fault Preller for not trading Cashner or Ross without knowing what offers were on the table. I mean last trade deadline I think the cubs offered Junior Lake for Ian Kennedy which he took the 1st compensation and turned that into Eric Laurer, saved 1$160k on that deal and projected to move through the minors quickly, and was offered a package including Michael Fulmer from the mets, but wound up taking the 1st round pick which he turned into Hudson Sanchez which saved the Padres a boat load of pool money, somewhat over 2 million, which they used for a well above slot bonus with their 3rd round pick Mason Thompson. and will probably put towards a deal with Reggie Lawson as well. That and depending on how much Tre Carter and/or Hunter Bishop are looking for if Preller gets both signed itll be miraculous.
Injediwetrust
Finally a Pads fan talking some sense. Agree 100 percent.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
It makes sense that Cashner would not have bought back much on his own, but surely they had to have gotten some offers of significance this past offseason for Ross. Now that he’s hurt, his value is very low and no one knows how he will be when or if he ever gets back. If they keep Cashner and turn him into another draft pick, that would be fine, but I just think they missed a good chance with Ross.
thebighurt619
Ross posted an alarming BB/9 last year, think he led the majors or was top 10 or 5 for starters, and his over usage of his slider had to hurt his stock. He uses his FB roughly 50% of the time and his slider roughly 40% of the time in 2014 and 2015. I’m sure there were offer, probably good offers, but other GMs have been trying to low ball Preller since he became GM and was willing to part with pretty much everyone accumulated by the previous regime. But, should be interesting to see what he gets of Jay, Myers, Rodney at the deadline; I doubt Myers gets traded over summer, but over the off season I do see him bringing back a big haul. Could rival what he gave up in Ross and Turner given his production this season and staying off the DL.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
I don’t see any situation in which Cashner nets us a draft pick.
chuckn9ne
No that Eric Lauer is necessarily a bad prospect but in hindsight I’d much rather have Michael Fulmer. Now that could potentially change in the future (fingers crossed) but Fulmer is dominating right now
thebighurt619
If the $160k saved on Laurers deal gets bishop, carter and/or lawson signed then its not just Laurer for Fulmer in retrospect. It’s Lauer, Thompson, and whoever else we are able to sign to above slot deals so they forgo college commitments. Yes Fulmer is dominating right now, but we shall see what Lauer and whoever else we sign wind up doing.
But I think Hudson Sanchez was the comp pick from Upton. So i guess it should be see what Sanchez and the rest signed from his 2 million in savings do.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Hudson Sanchez was the comp pick for Kennedy. If we had traded Upton we would have only had one comp pick and would have taken Sanchez with it. I would rather have Michael Fulmer than Eric Lauer.
chuckn9ne
I hope and pray that some of the international signings pan out or else the Padres might be looking at a very very long rebuilding period. Not that I’m not used to it but it gets a little taxing after a while
cjh815
Ha here’s a stat for you all who think he not top of rotation starter . Tehran in last 11 Ings has has given up 0 runs and 11 strike outs and 1 walk
BoldyMinnesota
Wow in 11 whole innings.
cjh815
Here you go for you all who think Julio Tehran is not ace look at this stat line compete game /one hit shut out with 7 strike outs / O walks . And if it wasn’t for a bloop single in 3 ing and that shouldn’t have happen because on 1-1 count the ump call a ball that should have been a strike and next pitch he throw a strike which made it 2-2 and went to 3 -2 and then they got there hit other wise he would have thrown a perfect game . NOW TELL BRAVES NATION HE IS NOT A ACE????
andropov4
One start hardly proves anything. Phil Humber threw a perfect game, you know.
Chris815
You do understand Tehran also sup 2 era in last 12 starts . And her has retired 37 out of 39 batters he face only 1 walk and 1 hit ,also in last 13 starts he has 2.17 era in last 7 starts and only given up 8 hits in last 3 starts combine
hojostache
An ace isn’t anointed after a 7 game run. Jon Niese had a solid 5-6 game run last year and every single Met fan knew that it was merely a hot streak. Tehran has more talent than JN, but when you look at his overall #’s for his career…they are merely good but not great. He isn’t a #1, though he could be a serviceable #2. He isn’t the next coming of (insert ace here).
thebighurt619
And Fernando Rodney has given the padres 24.1 innings allowing 0 runs thus far. Doesn’t mean at 39 years of age Rodney is the best reliever in the game right now.
BoldyMinnesota
HES NOT AN ACE
IndianaBob
Not an ace. Very good 2 or bad 1.
Chris815
So I guess Greg Maddox was not ace or Tom glavine to right . Like said above 1 hit and should have been perfect game . 8 total hit in last 3 games . 2..17 era in last 7 starts and if that not enough for you .91 whip , 2.08 babip and 3.83 k/bb %
aff10
Not an ace, my friend. Solid #2 for sure, and a guy that most every team (except for maybe the Cubs) could use, but one great start doesn’t move the needle a ton. Jered Weaver threw a shutout today too just so you know. He’s a nice player, one who should IMO bring in 3 prospects, at least 2 top 100 types, but one great start isn’t gonna change how anyone truly feels about him going forward
hojostache
lol. Tehran is NOT Maddox or Glavine. Both of those guys put together the better part of a decade of dominating pitching. Tehran is at….<1 season. If he wants to be in Maddox/Glavine territory he'll need to do it for another 6-8 years….at least.

Can anyone here tell me more about the Cashner for Inciarte trade offer that Stewart allegedly made Preller last year? Was it Inciarte for Cashner straight up or was it Inciarte for Cashner and more? If it was Cashner for Inciarte straight up idk whose more stupid, Stewart for making the offer or Preller for declining it.
