The Mets have dealt with injuries and on-field struggles of late, and COO Jeff Wilpon says that the organization may not wait until August 1st to make a move, as Newsday’s Laura Albanese reports. “I think we might need to do something before [the deadline],” Wilpon said. “The deadline is still four, six weeks away. We’ve got to start playing better baseball now.” We’ve heard chatter about the club possibly going after free agent-to-be Jose Reyes, but it’s fair to wonder whether a more substantial improvement is preferable. The infield seems like the obvious place to target for the Mets.
Here are some more high-level notes as the summer trade market takes shape:
- Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski indicated that he’s still feeling out the trade market, as Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald reports. “[A] lot of times the conversations now are just as much an informational, feeling out [type],” he said. “And I think it’s also a situation where a lot of clubs really haven’t decided what they’re going to do yet.” While there are some obvious sellers, he noted, not many teams that came into the year with hopes of contending are now prepared to change course. “It’s important for us to stay in contact with those organizations so we know when they shift their focus,” said Dombrowski.
- The Marlins don’t intend to trade from their major league roster to bolster their rotation, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports. Unsurprisingly, that means that Miami won’t part with young outfielders Marcell Ozuna and Christian Yelich, who have drawn interest. With little of clear interest in the farm system, Rosenthal suggests that the club could look to take on some cash as a way of facilitating a trade — with owner Jeffrey Loria willing to boost the payroll if there’s a playoff chase to play for.
- Astros GM Jeff Luhnow suggests he’s preparing for the trade deadline without a clear wish list, as Brian McTaggart of MLB.com tweets. “I like our team right now,” said Luhnow. “There’s no obvious hole. Clearly we’re going to talk to other clubs and be look out for upgrade.”
- All eyes have been on the White Sox, who have put out word that they are open to improve sooner than later. GM Rick Hahn addressed concerns with both the roster and the field staff, as JJ Stankevitz of CBS Chicago reports. The executive declined to comment on any specific personnel, including skipper Robin Ventura, and stressed that he won’t get caught up in short samples. “You try to look at the entirety of the work,” said Hahn. “… I think it’s natural to look at areas where you can get better, but any decisions are made based upon the entirety of anyone’s performance, based on not just the snippet of five or 10 days or the length of a season or past career.” Hahn continued to emphasize that the organization is looking to add, rather than thinking about fall-back plans. “We very much believe the talent is there to be in the thick of things come October,” he said. “We need to get it turned around fairly quickly, though, so we can continue saying that and reinforce our notion, our believes in ourselves that this team has the ability to contend.”

If the white sox continue to roster Avisail Garcia they will surely fail. He is the next prime candidate for DFA and boosting their outfield is essential. Players like Braun, Reddick, Gardner, Bruce. Are all likely candidates for trade. Or if they want to go the cheap route they can op for recently released Crawford (although his injury history could keep that from happening) I also expect if Alex Avila can’t produce more than a single every once and a blue moon to get the DFA too. Lucroy or even somebody like Bryan Holaday who seems to be an extra rostered catcher for the Rangers at the moment would improve them greatly. The white sox management isn’t being proactive and with Shields tanking (who they’ve yet to admit is injured) they’re bound for a 3rd or 4th place finish. Also they should fire Ventura. He’s probably the worst Manager in baseball.
Gogerty
He get bumped to number one spot when Fredi got fired?
ahtigers
Avila is a very good defensive catcher and controls a staff very well also they have no where near what the brewers are going to want for lucroy and they aren’t willing to give up Fulmer or any top guys so they can’t get lucroy let alone him and a pretty good outfielder
CrushCity
No obvious hole for the Astros? how bout first base, third base and left field.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Bergman and Reed. I’d say CF is a hole.
CrushCity
Doesn’t look like they are calling either up this year. had a back and forth with McTaggart on twitter tonight and he seems to think because the astros are winning as of late, they’re not going to call either up. Which is utterly ridiculous.
as for cf, gomez has hit in 6 straight. I’ll take that.
padam
Bregman got clocked in the head last night by a pitch. Hopefully he’s ok. If anyone should get the call up, it’s him.
htxstunna
Gomez is starting to come around.
CoryM
It’s politics. A GM isn’t going to say his current players suck. He is talking positively publicly while looking for upgrades. He’s saying exactly what he should be saying.
CrushCity
I get a gm saying it, but for McTaggart to adamantly back the suggestion was a joke to me. They have kemp wasting space on the bench instead of sending him back down to develop in an everyday role and letting Reed come up and take first or dh starting spots.
AstrosWS20
It’s difficult to pick just one hole. Frankly, I think they should stand pat. Don’t trade assets this year. We have no clear ace the way Keuchel is playing and you need at least one or two to win a World Series. Stand pat, let Bregman and Reed start the season with the big club next year and then fill the needed holes next year or this offseason.
glassml
I agree we should stay pat because the recent Astros trades are horrible and we are already 11 games back from the powerful Rangers. I hate Texas but love the way they have built a championship baseball team.

I wonder how many people Rick Hahn is fooling when he says he believes the talent is there to be in it in October. I’m not sure he even fools himself.

White Sox sealed their fate when they thought Shields was the answer. Tough to pitch in that ballpark and in the American League with the stuff he is featuring. Sox are in a tough predicament between rebuilding or going all out! Should be interesting in the next few weeks which path they choose.
southi
White Sox don’t have strong organizational depth to deal from. The Shield trade , bad as it was, in truth wasn’t a high cost move in terms of prospects. It was more like a hope and see move (which was foolish).
There is a reason that many experts didn’t pick the White Sox to contend. Besides making some sexy moves, they appeared to be counting on a lot of positive things to happen. That is not a sound strategy when your organization isn’t deep.

The Sox have the worst GM
Strauss

The sox have the worst front office period! Williams should be the first out the door and it’s ok if the door hits him in the ass. He hasn’t been able to build any part of that organization.
Niekro
Does Shields have a son they can ban from the club house by chance?
sngehl01
I nominate this for best comment of the month. Well done.
halos101
this is great hahahaha.

With fewer teams willing to sell in the AL since everyone is so close, and possibly more buyers in both leagues the 3 cream of the crop in NL all want to improve and Miami looking to take hold, this could really end up benefiting the Braves, Brewers and Reds and possibly the Padres if their pitchers get healthy. Maybe the Pirates become surprise sellers too with such a market coming together.
sngehl01
If the Pirates start to sell, they could really put themselves in a great position to dominate in just a year or two. Jaso, McCutchen, Freese would be a good get for quite a few teams. I still think Liriano is a guy people would want to take a chance on, but his value is down now. If he can rattle off a couple of solid starts, he could probably be moved for something decent.
I would think the Pirates are more likely to sell than buy or stand pat. Two teams in the division are clearly better. Really, I think they are only better than the Phillies/Braves/Reds/Padres in the NL. I think them and the Marlins are pretty comparable.

David Shoenfield of ESPN wrote that the Red Sox should try to trade for Chris Sale today so he can start for them tonight against his former team, the White Sox. Shoenfield says Boston should give up Yoan Moncada, Anderson Espinoza, Blake Swihart, Henry Owens, and Eduardo Rodriguez for Sale. Thoughts?
Connorsoxfan
May need to give up even more. Swihart and Owens have minimal value at this point.
seamaholic 2
That’s quite a haul. I don’t think the Red Sox do that. Decimates the farm for a one-year shot at glory, which hasn’t been the Sawx style lately.
Mihailo1227
If the white sox are not near .500 at the deadline expect a clean house. Williams gone, Ventura gone! Now the best part trading Sale, Quintana, melky, Frazier, Abreu, Robertson, and eaton. The sox will have a terrific farm.
billysbballz
Are you serious? Owens is not a high end prospect. Eduardo Rodriguez has huge questions, mainly can he develop a good third pitch. Swihart has no real position and his bat doesn’t necessarily play on outfield yet. I mean your reading questions marks and one high end prospect with huge money owned to him and no clear position for one of the best pitchers and lefty in baseball. Your going to have to give up your top three prospects and then thrown in Swihart, Rodriguez, and Owens.
dlevin11
Yoan Moncada is already headed to the Hall of Fame. He is not going to be traded ever.
Voice of Reason
I don’t know what Hahn is saying when he says there has been a small sample with venturas work as manager. His record since he started 4 years ago is 331-387 and he has finished in 2nd in 2012, and 5th, 4th and 4th from 2013-2015.
The writing is on the wall and the white sox know it. It’s time for robin to go.
lilojbone
If there is one man from the White Sox organization who has to be released is Kenny Williams. Under his tenure as GM, he formed a World Series team; for that, thank you, but Kenny’s strategy only worked once. From 2006 — 2012, the White Sox were a contending team but what was the cost? Instead of focusing on developing talent, prospects were traded and players on their last legs were signed (Griffy and Youklis come to mind). Under Kenny, the White Sox had the second worse farm system. In my opinion, it is unacceptable! Insanity is continuously doing the same thing hoping to get better results. It is time for a change. It sucks the Sox are in a slump. I am as frustrated as much as Robin and the players. Heck, we need a center field because Jackson is injured and we need to look for one outside our farm system. (No offense. to Coats,) I do not blame this on Robin because he has to work with what he has. I have no quarrel with Hanh. I have read the farm system has improved under him and it is no longer ranked in the bottom. However, this might not have been the case if Kenny would had done a better job since 2006. So Kenny, thank you for the championship in 2005 but I’ll be damned if us Sox fans do the same as Bears fans and celebrate the same championship every year.. Your talents will be utilized somewhere else in Chicago, which is also falling apart.
ChiSoxCity
Great post, summed the front office problems up nicely.
billysbballz
Please mets pull this off do we can laugh at this pathetic ownership even more.
iamhector24
There is no such thing as a move where you sign someone to a veterans minimum and can cut him at anytime being called “a move you can laugh at”.
