WEDNESDAY: Miami has also reached out to the Padres to ask about lefty Drew Pomeranz, MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reports. After some solid work in recent years in a swingman capacity, Pomeranz has put up surprisingly excellent numbers as a starter in San Diego, working to a 3.00 ERA with 10.7 K/9 against 4.2 BB/9 over 81 innings.
Pomeranz can be controlled for two more seasons after this one via arbitration, and he’ll be building off of a cheap $1.35MM salary. The Marlins are evidently looking at assets with value beyond the present season, though that would certainly raise the acquisition cost for an organization that doesn’t feature a high volume of highly-regarded talent in the upper levels of its farm system.
MONDAY: The Marlins have been looking at both starters and relievers on the trade market, according to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter). Among the players they have discussed is Rays’ right-hander Jake Odorizzi, per the report.
It’s not surprising to hear that Miami is looking for arms. The club is certainly in a buying posture as the All-Star break nears; in fact, the Fish have somewhat quietly passed the Mets and currently occupy the second spot in the NL East.
Despite that success, there are some clear questions in the staff. That’s especially true in the rotation, where Jose Fernandez has led a group of otherwise ordinary starters. Major free agent signee Wei-Yin Chen isn’t going anywhere, but hasn’t been great. Adam Conley and Tom Koehler have been ordinary on the whole, while neither Justin Nicolino or Jarred Cosart has managed to lock down a spot.
There are at least some questions, too, in the bullpen, though the results have been more than fine from the team’s top relievers even with Carter Capps and now Bryan Morris missing significant time. A.J. Ramos and breakout righty David Phelps have held down the back of the pen admirably, with Kyle Barraclough racking up strikeouts but also walks. Miami has received good middle-relief work from pitchers like Dustin McGowan and Nick Wittgren, with late-inning lefty Mike Dunn showing promise upon his return. On the other hand, Miami has received a lot of subpar innings from other pitchers. It’s certainly possible to imagine the team pursuing back-end or middle relief help via trade.
Odorizzi looks like exactly the kind of pitcher you’d think the Marlins would look at. He could well be made available even if Tampa Bay doesn’t elect to trigger a broader sell-off, as the team has loads of depth in its own rotation. He has been more solid than great this year, but is a power pitcher with control (through 2019 via arbitration), much like Cosart was when he was added back in 2014.

Isn’t it Dustin McGowan not Kyle
Jeff Todd
Yeah I don’t know how I did that. Fixed it.

Can’t really imagine the Marlins being able to offer the Rays anything of particular value, outside their major league squad. Odorizzi is no ace, but he’s a solid middle rotation guy, that should command a solid return with his team control. Can’t see Miami willing to trade Kolek or Naylor, and after that their system sort of drops off. Rays probably would target Realmuto, but no way the marlins would trade their starting catcher in a playoff race, with no good alternative.
ducksnort69
Don’t underestimate the Rays FO’s ability to regard players higher than consensus evaluations. Sometimes it works, ex. Forsythe, other times not so much, ex. Souza.
pgmitchell
Marlins have nothing the Rays need
_mannyalvarez
Marlins are stacked with offense. no pitching besides Fernandez
theo2016
Not in the minors. And anything off the big league team minimizes the upgrade.

As a Marlins fan, I dont understand what universe the Marlins think they live in, where you can get a SP like him for free (from someone that isnt the Marlins) lol, b/c that must be the plan, considering there are essentially zero assets they have or can use. Maybe they should ask Texas how they got an elite reliever in Sam Dyson for free…O wait, that was from the Marlins….
BarrelMan
They should probably be more realistic and go after a Matt Garza type of guy.
robhussle
Bring back Nolasco
Crewfan620
Garza might be appealing to teams at the deadline if he keeps up his current production and continues on a good role. He would also not require anything super significant due to his contract and injuries so I’m sure the Marlins could acquire him pretty easily.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Don’t underestimate the potential of a three team trade.

The Rays have been very inconsistent this year and can’t seem to get all facets of the game working at the same time. They had another disappointing loss tonight and they’re starting to look more like a team that may wind up as sellers. If so, they could have some interesting pieces to move. They have multiple young, controllable SP that could make for interesting targets and Steve Pearce who is having a monster season.
That being said, I have a hard time seeing who the Marlins have to offer in a potential Odorizzi trade. I don’t see the Rays moving him without getting multiple top 100 type prospects in return and the Marlins don’t really have any prospects of that caliber.
crazysull
The Rays would most defiantly start by asking for Ozuna given their situation in the outfield and then go from there. I am sure the Marlins are unwilling to give him up just for Odorizzi so I don’t see any serious rumor here, just wishful thinking.
davidcoonce74
Although I understand the Padres need to deal Pomeranz, especially if they can get a legit prospect or player in return, he’s only 27 and under team control for a while and, well, somebody has to pitch, right? On the other hand, Pomeranz’s walk rate is spiraling upward, which has been his problem throughout his career. So perhaps dealing him while he still is putting up decent numbers might be the right move
sdsuphilip
Unless they are trading from major league team they have nothing to trade. Maybe they can get a backend guy with minimal control left. No shot for Pomeranz/Odorizzi
bleacherbum
Eh, that’s not entirely true. They don’t have any top 100 prospects in their organization but they do have some guys that would be of interest. Tyler Kolek the number 2 overall pick in last years draft is recovering from Tommy John and would be a steal for a rebuilding team to stash and slowly work back into form. Their number 2 prospect in the organization is Josh Naylor who is a 19 year old big slugging lefty first baseman from Canada who was taken with the 12th pick in the 2015 draft, so they might not have the blue chip prospects but I think the Padres should buy on Pomeranz’s early success and cash in on him before it’s too late like with (Ross and now Cashner), I would ask for Kolek & Naylor and a piece of the big league club, maybe Cosart. The Padres throw in a guy like Quackenbush and call it a day.
sdsuphilip
Please, both those guys aren’t good prospects. Naylor makes like 3 teams top 10. Kolek wasn’t a top 100 guy before TJ. There only top 200 guy is ineligible to be traded. Trading pomeranz for that garbage return is the opposite of selling high, it’s acting like Pomeranz is a number 5 starter.
ZachPadres24
What about trading their #1 pick this year, Braxton Garrett? Sort of like we did with Trea Turner
MikePLV10
Can’t trade this years draft picks until after the World Series.. Use to be able to by using PTBNL in trades but now they can’t.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Yeah they should look elsewhere before going to the Marlins. Perhaps more potential suitors will pop up as the deadline gets closer.
theo2016
Actually you can trade them as soon as they sign now.
therealryan
Recent draft picks can’t be traded until after the World Series.

You also have to remember that the Padres have one of the worst contracts in the majors still on the team. My bet is that they use Pomeranz as a get outta jail free card and ship Kemp off with him. That’s the only way I think this deal could work.
Dylan A. Chase
That’s not a terrible idea. And for all of his maligning, Kemp is still a league average player. People act like he is an actual criminal, but compared to a guy like Pablo Sandoval, at least the dude is plugging a hole on a roster.
As a situational fill-in to use in pinch hitting situations, he might actually provide even more value. He still has a fearsome power stroke, and for all of the undervaluing of situational hitting in WAR metrics (I know, I know…’Noise!’, they screamed….Whatever) it’s impossible to argue against the fact that Matt Kemp hits with runners in scoring position.
Ideally though, they can unload him to an AL team, where he might actually provide a few wins a year if his hips are spared from chasing after endless doubles in a Luis Perdomo dumpster fire.
IMO, Pads will take the risk again and hold onto Pom until the offseason. Let him build a 200 inning resume. Although it did blow up in their face with Ross and Cash, timing a sell-high can set a team up for a decade (see: Dickey, R.A. and Mets, New York).
thebighurt619
To get out of kemps contract they can either part with renfoe or margot or wil myers. And i mean get out of it completely.
The braves gave up kimbrel and upton jr for wisler a comp balance pick maybin and quentin.
So i think they can still get a decent return for myers/kemp as the braves did for kimbrel/upton. Top 50 prospect, another top 100 prospect, and a couple fringe prospects, and a bad contract either 1 or 2 years left- somewhere between 8-12mill a season. Not ideal in terms of compensation for myers but to get out of that contract completely its worth it.
gobraves46
What happened to Jared Cosart? I know he’s been injured, but it kind of seemed like the Marlins mishandled him a little bit.
sdsuphilip
He was always overrated thanks to futures game. Always was likely a reliever, fastball straight and zero command.
marlins1993
“Odorizzi looks like exactly the kind of pitcher you’d think the Marlins would look at.”
Perfectly said, Jeff Todd. In more ways than one.
AndreB
Kendry Flores and Jarlin Garcia for Odorizzi? I think thats pretty fair considering how well Odorizzi did last yr
therealryan
That’s not nearly enough for Odorizzi. Over the past 2.5 seasons he ranks in the top 50 in ERA, FIP, K/9 and fWAR and has 3.5 years of control remaining. You don’t trade that for 2 so-so prospects that project as #4 or 5 starters.
jmorrison8
I was discussing a hypothetical Cubs offer for Odorizzi the other day. We came to a conclusion that the framework would likely require Torres and Happ, plus 1-2 organizational top pitching prospects. We were obviously just guessing too, but I think we were much more in the ballpark.
sdsuphilip
Yes if Rays are open to dealing him that would be a good starting point
