The Cubs have agreed to a minor league deal with veteran righty Joel Peralta, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets. The agreement is pending a physical.
Peralta, 40, was recently cut loose by the Mariners after a rough start to the season. Seattle still owes him the balance of his $1.25MM salary, less whatever he can earn (presumably, at the league minimum) with Chicago or another organization.
Though Peralta has pitched to a 5.40 ERA in his 23 1/3 frames on the year, there is some reason for optimism. He also struck out 10.8 and walked only 2.7 batters per nine with the M’s, and he’s maintained his velocity while hitting the zone and managing contact much as he has in prior years. The trick will be limiting the long ball, which has hurt the flyball-prone reliever thus far in 2016.
Per the report, the Blue Jays and Royals also showed interest before Peralta elected to reunite with manager Joe Maddon. Many of Peralta’s best seasons came with Tampa Bay during his four-year run with the organization.

Nice pickup.

Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t find sense in cutting loose Neil aramirez and essentially replacing him with Joel Peralta a week later.

It’s just you.
djtommyaces
Yes it’s just you. People keep speaking of the old neil ramirez not the post injury neil ramirez
gobraves46
Me too

I think Ramirez had issues, lost a couple miles an hour on his fastball, the Brewers dumped him pretty quick too… I think his window for being a quality reliever is closing.

Minor League Deals don’t require 25 Man roster spots.

I agree Neil Ramieze was ten time better but he wasn’t going to clear waivers but yet Theo held on to a guy like Richards cause he was a sorry lefty – Cub fans cringe when seeing him even warm up so Peralta better than Richard cups half filled but it was full w/Neil

Boy are they desperate or what?

Yeah, that’s it…

Bummer, thought Peralta would be a good fit with Giants

Not just you. For the Cubs its Championship or bust. Peralta, IF, he even performed well, wild be the least reliable in their bullpen. Minus, RichArd. Giving Alcantara for Coghlan was an overpay. And unless you’re acquiring Miller or Chapman….just stand pat.
cubsfan2489
Alcantara was an overpay huh? According to his MLB the Show rating? He’s blocked anywhere you look at it. They already have Ben Zobrist and Javy Baez is being the Zobrist of the team! Now if you wanna talk overpay of trades between the Cubs and A’s, then look back to July 3 2014.

And I prefer Chapman. The guy throws 101-103!! You just about CAN NIT hit that! 7th Strop
8th Chapman
9th Rondon
OR
7th Strop
8th Rondon
9th Chapman
MAKES FOR A VEY SHORT GAME. Give him Vogelbach and Candelario . Even a third player. And we’ve got money, re-sign him for 4yrs-52mil and you’ve got him and Rondon at the back end of your bullpen while you’re making these championship runs the next few years

We’re not spending a dollar next year Free Agent not even on The great Fowler . Look for more kids getting a shot . Here in this organization not a bad ideal.
