Here are some news items from both the NL and AL Central…
- In an interview with Jim Duquette and Jim Bowden on MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM (audio link), Brewers GM David Stearns discussed that his team’s plan “at this stage [is to] acquire and develop the best young talent we possibly can,” and thus if teams come calling about Milwaukee’s young players, Stearns would want an “exceptionally high” return. Stearns, however, didn’t exactly say that this makes a veteran player like Jonathan Lucroy or Ryan Braun more likely to dealt. In fact, he noted that the possibility of trading Braun hasn’t been something that he’s had to seriously consider in his brief time as Milwaukee’s GM, and “there is no motivation for us to move…an elite-level player.” That said, Stearns did say he’d already talked to both Braun and Lucroy about the trade rumors circling around both men and said he’d keep them appraised of any developments should they arise. Stearns expects “active discussions” leading up to the trade deadline he said the Brewers “are in a situation where we need to be open-minded and we need to be open to any possibility.”
- If the Cubs keep running away with the NL Central, ESPN’s Buster Olney (subscription required) feels the Pirates may focus on deadline acquisitions that can help them in 2017, as reaching the coin flip that is the Wild Card game isn’t worth giving up substantial talent for a short-term rental.
- While the Pirates may have a need at catcher, both Clint Hurdle and Neal Huntington felt John Jaso’s past concussion history ruled him out of consideration for work behind the plate, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette tweets. Chris Stewart and the newly-acquired Erik Kratz look to handle the catching duties while Francisco Cervelli is on the disabled list.
- It doesn’t appear that Sean Burnett will exercise his June 15 opt-out clause even he isn’t on the Twins’ Major League roster, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports (via Twitter). Burnett signed a minor league contract with Minnesota in May, his fourth minors deal with as many clubs since November following prior agreements with the Braves, Dodgers and Nationals. The veteran southpaw has a 2.66 ERA over 20 1/3 relief innings at Triple-A this season as he looks to return to the bigs for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2014.
- Bryan Shaw had another tough outing on Saturday, leading Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer to wonder if the Indians need to look for a more reliable setup man at the deadline. Shaw’s season has been a roller-coaster, going from a terrible April to lights-out in May and thus far shaky in June, all adding up to a 5.18 ERA, 9.25 K/9 and 3.33 BB/9 over 24 1/3 innings. Shaw’s main problem has been the long ball, as his whopping 2.2 HR/9 is more than triple his career average prior to this season.
dsteig
Why doesn’t Terry Ryan bring him up instead of claiming a guy with ERA over 5. That’s why Ryan has to go now
Twinsfan79
They need more arms than just Burnett. And there’s likely a plan if he didn’t opt out. Although that might be because there’s an obvious need.

this is the same clown who was saying that the indians should trade all 4 of their top 100 guys and trevor bauer for what amounted to tehran, inciarte, markakis and a couple nobody spare parts from their pen and bench. clearly he still isn’t taking my recommendation of staying away from the drugs.
Brixton
The one point you missed is that trade value and/or current positioning in a rotation (being a 1 or 2, etc) has nothing to do with Wins, losses, career WAR or earning power, whether it is through arbitration, FA or career money earned.
cjh815
That where your wrong Brixton gms look at number in player career they take those numbers they see what let’s say player U has down and let say play w is sim in number and take though same number and they project them against play x,y,z who are older and all again let say player r,s, t who are young . To see what play u has down and project against the same numbers that player x,y,z have done in there career see if there on the same path a or better and project u numbers again them and what plays r,s,t mite do when they get to play u and what they mite project same path that plays x,y,z have down and if player u projects better then let say r,s,t , and w will do in future that given him greater value since team pay player what they mite do in the future not what they have all ready done

Dude, how about working on some grammar first. Your posts, regardless of content, are horrible to try and read.

Sorry, that was for cjh815.

Too long and stupid, didn’t read

Please dude, make your posts more legible. While your ideas are out of the box, they would be easier to understand if you formatted your posts better. If you spent half the time making your post legible as you do looking up all these numbers and players, your posts would be better to read. Instead, most of us probably just see a gigantic blob of words that are hard to read.

Hoosier fact that you all talk numbers and I give you numbers and you all won’t take time to look at the number compare the numbers the reason you don’t want to is because you don’t want to give credit to fact why Braves fans have been preaching why he is better then all you all give him credit I have the answer to who each of these players are if like I can post it
Brixton
The problem is half of those numbers are irrelevant.
Player A: 36 years old, 34-26, 7.6 career WAR, 9M earned.
Player B: 37 years old, 147 wins, 20.1 career WAR, 90M earned.
Similar career ERAs and FIPs.
Which one is a #2, which one is a #5 (at best)?

Hi, Cjh815,
I would like to prevent you from getting this type of response in the future. This is called a “period.” It is used to separate sentences. Most kids master it’s use by 2nd grade. As I have high hopes for you, our next conversation will be about our friend, the “comma.”
southi
You do realize that is extremely difficult to look at (especially on a cell). Sorta makes all your hard work pointless.
cjh815
It not difficult at all and it not waste if I gave you the answers the reason you all don’t like what idid is because I through right back in your face the same thing you all through in mine . And like told another article on this sit a good gm look what pitchers simpler age point in there career and they look at pitchers are putting up in career so let say this let say play x has put sim or better numbers the player y has down in his career if take play number x who is young then player w,y and z and project player x number out to around same projection that play w,y,z have down the you can figure out what play x will do in the future because team don’t pay for what you down they pay for what you mite do in the future so that why I did this and if you want answer to both of the list I give you the answer if you all ask nicely
cjh815

List 1 which was so call number 2 starters
A. Is Rick Porcello
B. Is masahiro tanaka
C is Anibal Sanchez
D. Is Jeff samardziga
E is Jarrett Weaver
F is Jason Hammels
G is Homer Bailey
H is Matt Cain
I is Ian Kennedy
J is Julio Tehran
K is Matt Garza
L is John lackey
M is Dillion Gee
N is tanner Roark
O is Phil Hughes
P is Jordan Zimmerman

A. Is Sonny Gray
B is Chris Tillman
C is Marcus Stroman
D is Michael Pinada
E is Chris Archer
F is Justin Verlander
G is Cory Kluber
H is Carlos Carrasco
I is Danny Salazar
J is Felix Hernandez
K is Yu Darvich
L is Stephen Strausberg
M is Matt Harvey
N is Jacob DeGrom
O is Noah syndergaard
P is Jose Fernandez
Q is Jake Arrieta
R is Julio Tehran
S is Adam Wainwright
T is Gerritt Cole
U is Johnny Cueto
V is Zack Greinke
W is Tyson Ross
Surprise. So what do you all think of the answers
Now I hope this stops the question if julio Tehran is at less a 2 and in many case is as equal to some of what you all think make a one if you figure the same pitcher you see that he has better career era better then 10 aces and has same career era as zack Greinke . When you take in effect that he 25 years old and his contract which is a lot better over next 4 years and fact that most of these pitchers are or will make more then that during the same time in arb. You should see why the Braves can ask for a lot more then you all think and when you compare the career numbers of Tehran and let say samardiziga you can see Tehran numbers are better if you if equal them during same time frame and if you add the fact of his contract if you look at what Cubs got from athletics let look back it
Athletics got samardziga , hammell
Cubs got ss Russell . 8 over all prospect . And A,s number 1 plus there number 2 prospect of billy McKinney and Dan straily which at time was a starting pitcher for A’s and cash so if Cubs got that much for samardziga and hamell back in 2014 and it easily to see that Tehran is better then Samardiziga .Then brave can trade Tehran and let’s say bud Norris to a contender and get hell a lot more especially when you look at fact that Tehran is younger and is under team friendy contract the samardziga was at the time so tell us that where idiots now for asking for hell a lot more for him .

First off I’m a lot older then most of you on here. Second hate inform you all I have iq bigger then most of you as well . Most of you could even come close to my iq . 3rd of all none of you even know what a real gm does or thinks . In fact have anyone of you ever asked the people who count . A major league player ,or manager , or even coach to ask them how good Tehran really is .no the only think you all know is rarer gun. At so call advance statics . You think he can’t hit 97 on rarer gun so you think he can’t pitch and you statics like war, to try to explain why he isn’t any good . We’ll have any you ever really try to hit fastball . Don’t answer that because answer most likely not. Bye way hate inform you all but 97 mite look great on radar gun . But it strait . Also if any of you have ever ask major league play who hate hitting of more guy who throws 97 strait fast ball or guy who can throw 95 but takes something off his fast ball throw 88 to 90 and hits his spots with movement . With great change up chances speeds . Funny thing is yo all think player like Harvey , syndergaard are great but let me inform you the that there only so many bullets in the chamber .you can only through that hard at max efferent for so long then you run out of bullets just go out ask players like verlander , weaver , shields . They all us hit 96 and up on there fastball now look at there fast ball they lucky if they can hit 92 and they had become pitchers . And also the reason there been so man T.Js is because to many guy are max guys and have falling in love with radar gun. . And you see in couple years team , and player will realize that

cjh815
Taken something off you fastball will lengthen your career and is better for you long time health . Especially with amount of $ team are paying each of baseball player keeps going up. When I was kid highest payed ball player was Dave Winfield he made 3 million a year and people that was crazy now people getting paid 25 to 30 million a year for 5 to 6 years and there talking about Harper getting 500 to 750 million dollar contract . And price just got around 30 million a year and play like Strasberg who has done nothing in his career just got 7 175 million . So with salaries keep rising you will see they will realize have guy that hit 97 to 105 is great in all but most of those guys are max efferent guys and when more of those guys have to have Tj surgery and are out for 1 year and have to 2 years and most time they have have second one . And if player is out they can’t help your team win it not worth what they pay if a play can’t be out there on reg bases to help win game and pull fans throw the turn stills . Because rather any of you like this or not MLB is business . And it about what you do on ball field not how hard you throw
daveinmp
Somebody needs to realize that the Brewers at 30-33 are not a bad team. Granted a wild card this year would be quite unlikely, but they are just 4 1/2 games behind and just 2 behind everyone’s darlings the Pirates.
Why on earth would they entertain offers for a premier player like Braun who they have under contract for 4 more years that don’t have teams offering both top flight talent and full salary relief? It’s not like their total payroll is such that they can’t handle Braun’s salary which by the way he is outperforming this year.
Brewers are not in the beginning stages of a major rebuild. They have young talent on their roster now, one of the top prospects in all of baseball in Orlando Arcia, major league ready, and one of the top lefty prospects in the game in Josh Hader also knocking on the door. They also have one of the better bullpens in the NL.
It’s not a given they’ll trade Lucroy. It’s much less likely Braun goes anywhere leaving a gaping hole in the middle of the lineup that would set them back for 3-4 more years. Braun has a big contract, but its’ not in Votto category and price goes down some in the final years. Brewers need to hold on to him.
chesteraarthur
I like what the brewers have been doing. They’ve made some very good trades. I think a lot of their reason for trading him now would be that they don’t see positive signs for his injuries.
doctorstrangeglove
Personally, I’m of the belief that a team, even a rebuilding one, can’t and shouldn’t trade everybody, because you need someone around for the fans and the young players to lean on. For the Brewers, that player is Braun. I’m not saying he’s cannot be traded, because you may get such an amazing offer for him it would be stupid as hell not to take it, but despite how good Braun is, he’s not cheap (although not terribly expensive), he’s 32 (not ancient, but not young), there are legitimate injury concerns that most likely only get worse as he ages, and even now, Braun does not those maintenance days off. I know that each and every post on the internet must be required by law to mention “PED baggage” in regards to Braun (I question how much this REALLY matters, since every organization seems to have players who have been busted for this somewhere, and GMs still offer lucrative contracts and make trades for these guys, but whatever), so a team may try to lowball a rookie GM like David Stearns to get him, but I doubt it.
Also, I think Chester makes a good point as well. If Milwaukee has real concerns regarding his injuries, and feel it is too highly likely Braun just falls apart or breaks down because of them, now is the time to move him.
I don’t think the Brewers are likely to get real value in a trade compared to the real value he offers the Brewers staying in Milwaukee, but if it’s close, they may have to strike now.
jstamped
At this point the Reds should take a flyer on every available bullpen arm! Burnett is a descent pitcher who knows his way in the NL, especially the NLC.
