With the traditional first-round picks in the books, we’ll use this post to track the “sandwich” selections that come before the second round: compensatory picks awarded to clubs that lost QO-declining free agents as well as Round A of the competitive balance picks (tradeable choices that are awarded by lottery to low-revenue/small market clubs).

Pick 40 is the Braves isn’t it?
atlbrave22
Yeah Braves have #40 and Pirates have #41.
joshbehr84
Dodgers have #36 too
eggy
Where is Dakota Hudson going to go now that Baltimore didn’t take him
Niekro
Possibly Rangers here? have been taking quite a few college pitchers.
Brixton
Interesting to see a guy in Nolan Jones (who lives in my hometown) fall down. He was 20th in the MLB prospect board.

I will be rooting for Kaboom

I was really hoping that the Rockies could get Carter Kieboom. Just imagine the marketing possibilities for a hitter named Kieboom playing in Coors Field. I’d buy that T shirt..

Give Rockies credit for drafting cpl of bullet-ball throwers. Pint hopefully should develop well and hopefully tyler they can put on a power reliever track. Look at the marlins? #1 on Garret, whom IMO was the most over rated among the guys talked about and just had to go to someone I like.
Ray Ray
Yeah I am tentatively happy about the Rockies draft thus far. Although I always prefer a position player as the first pick. Whether it is true or not, it always seems that they have less of a tendency to bust.
bravesfan 7
I know a lot of you braves fans are hating that the braves haven’t taken any bats, but they are taking the best talent available and that’s they way you should draft. And btw I’m pretty sure the braves front office knows more about what they’re doing than you do.
theo2016
They certainly didn’t take the best talent available with their first pick so that’s false,
Jon429
Actually they drafted 3 guys ranked by MLB in the top 25 with their first 3 picks. Overdrafting Anderson at #3 I’m assuming will lead to less slot money for him and more for the other 2 guys they took at 40 and 44 in order to get them to sign. So they took the best they could with their first 3 picks.
theo2016
1) you lied to support your argument. Wentz was 26.
2) I think you are overeating the difference between number 25 and 26 ranked and other top 40’s.
3) clearly they wanted a top 15 talent to fall to them and that didn’t happen.
4) high school pitchers! Lol. Will be 2018 before they are even throwing 100 innings and ready to be useful trade pieces…
Salionski
He didn’t lie. He was referring to MLB’s rankings, which Muller was the lowest at 24 (Wentz at 16). BA had Muller at 25 and Wentz at 26.
theo2016
Yeah realized after the fact. Callis isn’t very good so I just go with b.a., I certainly think he over rated wentz; he has a scary velocity band for someone who had arm trouble last year.
Jon429
1) Didn’t lie, go take a look at MLB.com’s top 100 prospect list.
2) Ok, well BA had them in the 20s, yet the Braves got them in the 40s.
3) I don’t think they were realistically targeting top 15 at 40 and 44. That was all just nonsense from overzealous fans. Yet they knew some would players would slip to the second round, they always do.
4) The strength of this draft was HS players, mostly pitchers. That’s been known for a year now. It’s by far riskier but these kids presumably have higher ceilings than the college guys taken. Point taken that they won’t be useful trade pieces, they probably won’t be traded for a long time anyway, if ever. Who cares about that anyway? It’s not like teams are thinking “which player can I take that will have the most trade value a year from now”
theo2016
Daz Cameron fell last year and was a top 10 talent, pretty sure they were hoping for something similar. A lot of teams actually think about future trade value while drafting. The original point was they could have gotten a bat underslot that was better just as easily as a high school pitcher. Do you honestly think any of the college bats would sit out a year and take another shot in a deeper draft next year? Point is they should have gone with a floor bat underslot.
Jon429
Daz Cameron fell because Houston had a deal worked out with him before the draft. He was telling other teams he wouldn’t sign. 4 mil was way overslot anyway, like top 5 last year. Only reason Houston could afford to do that was because they had 2 picks in the top 5. I somehow doubt the Braves were ready to offer 4 million of their slot money to the #40 or 44 pick.
They had a plan, executed it and it worked for them. Will it payoff? No way to know that for at least a few years.
theo2016
Unless you are privy to their predraft plan it’s tough to say they executed it…
Math&Baseball
Teams RARELY execute pre draft plans. Cause you don’t know who someone will and won’t take before you pick. Which is why teams have a plethora of contingency plans for drafting. Just like NFL and NBA does.

Daz had no deal worked out with Houston before the draft idiot
Salionski
3 projected 1st rounders with their 3 picks is a pretty solid strategy. I think the Braves front office will be sleeping well tonight while knee jerk reactionary fans are still screaming about it.
Plus the international “spending spree” is still coming and they’ve really only been consistently linked to bats. That’s where I suspect we’ll start to see some of the impact bats start to come in, and then later on in trades.
RunDMC
Good – not a good year for bats. That’s what the international draft is for.
Gogerty
Agreed RunDMC, ever look back at the Top 100 prospects 4-5 years ago. Ton of names that were trade pieces and what were Top 10 before clearly did not make it to prominence. Drafts are fun, but not end all be all.
chesteraarthur
I’m not really sure what that post is supposed to say, but if you mean that there are people in the draft that didn’t succeed, then yes, every draft has it’s misses. You should take a closer look though, High School arms are the riskiest and most volatile of any players drafted.
I think in large part, this draft shows that the braves seem to be looking at a more long term game than a short term (competing next year or really 2018). The arms they drafted are probably 4+ years from making any real contribution to the ML team.
Gogerty
I was just stating even if you look at the position players, a lot get jumbled back and forth. I am not as well versed with the draft prospects to be honest, but does not seem there was a “can’t miss” pool.
Like any fan of any team, hoping my team can do well in the international and can use the freed up money to fill in a couple holes.
chesteraarthur
This draft did not have a very strong top (can’t miss) collection. It is supposed to be pretty strong depth wise.
I think it’s hard to evaluate any of these teams drafts until we see how much money some of these players sign for. For example I’ll be curious to see what Groome, Pint and also Lewis get vs. Anderson.
Gogerty
I agree.
theo2016
It’s a little different now though. I feel 90% of college bats will take underslot that high as sitting out is just crazy bad for their development as getting in to pep ball at 23 isn’t a good idea. But now they are pretty likely to just get slot because there isn’t much overdo it guys left.
chesteraarthur
Which college bats would you have taken at 3? I really didn’t like this class for them at all outside of senzel.
theo2016
Ray or Lewis were each fine there. As a cubs fan you should know chesny young, well that was Lewis teammate at Mercer and everything he did has translated. Lewis will be a good player. Might be this year’s benitendi with better d.
