The Pirates have announced that righty Ryan Vogelsong is headed to the 15-day DL after being diagnosed with facial fractures. He’ll be replaced on the active roster by fellow right-hander A.J. Schugel.
Vogelsong was struck by a pitch in the left eye area yesterday in what was one of the more frightening plays you’ll ever see on a baseball field. The team previously suggested that he had suffered injuries both to the eye and the surrounding bone. Fortunately, Vogelsong’s wife tweeted promising news last night about his general outlook, which was obviously much more important than his playing status.
Pittsburgh signed the 38-year-old to provide a swingman option and stabilize a staff that has some uncertainty. He’s done just that, providing 21 2/3 innings of 3.74 ERA pitching with 6.6 K/9 against 4.2 BB/9.
It’s obviously not clear at this point just what lies ahead for Vogelsong, but surely we’ll learn more in the coming days. MLBTR joins many others around the game in wishing the respected veteran a full and speedy recovery.

wish we could have kept him in SF instead of peavy… and it would have kept his face intact – really miss that guy around here

it’s hard to find a good spot starter/middle innings guy. this will be big loss for the bucs. I seen that Schugel was brought back. so if anyone thought glasnow or taillion would arrive,….not yet. hey ryan, get well and recover soon!

I don’t think the Pirates would bring up Glasnow or Taillion if their entire pitching staff went on the DL. Gotta save that money #super2

Good luck to him. When Showtime did that special on the Giants, it was hard to not love he and his wife.

If you don’t know the Vogelsong story, look it up it’s just such an amazing and heartwarming story of a guy who was given a chance as an older (almost done) player and took it with both hands. It’s a Lifetime movie I tell ya!!!!
If you can listen to an interview on him with the crew at KNBR, do it!! They are always eloquent and honest, you won’t find a bunch of “non answers” from him. I love listening to him talk baseball because he is just such an intelligent player. One of the guys at KNBR once told me “Vogelsong is ALWAYS a GREAT interview because he’s real, there’s nothing fake about him”.
I would switch on Pirates games just hoping to see him and/or McKutchen play. He’s a classy guy who loved his team and only left because SF didn’t have a spot for him and if you know my posts you’ll know I love players who play with class.
But if you have watched this guy, you know it will take more than a ball to the snoot for him to stop playing. Get well Vogey, SF fans are pulling for you, you’ll always be a Giant to me.
