The Red Sox have designated right-hander Sean O’Sullivan for assignment, Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald was among those to report (Twitter link).
Before the Red Sox designated him, the 28-year-old O’Sullivan made his second major league start of the year Sunday. In a 10-9 win over Houston, O’Sullivan threw 4 1/3 ugly innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits – including two home runs – along with three strikeouts and two walks. O’Sullivan’s first start, in Boston’s 13-5 victory over Oakland this past Tuesday, was a more successful outing. He still surrendered 12 hits and four earned runs in six innings, however. All told, O’Sullivan threw 11 1/3 innings for the Red Sox prior to today and compiled an unsightly 7.94 ERA.
In parts of seven big league seasons, O’Sullivan has racked up 309 1/3 career major league frames and pitched to a 5.96 ERA. His struggles have come thanks in part to a lack of strikeouts, as O’Sullivan has averaged just 4.34 per nine innings.

Can he take Clay Buchholz with him?

Yes!! Totally trade clay buchholz!! Please!!
philly435
I still can’t believe he was even rostered to begin with
start_wearing_purple
Our pitching staff is that thin. But he benefited from the Sox offensive burst.

He’s, like, 8th or 9th on our depth chart for starting pitchers, but injuries, longetivity issues with Owens, and coincidental timing of starts are what caused it.

I can understand giving him the first start to see what he could do. Still can’t believe after that game there were people saying he pitched alright. 12 hits is not alright. He got lucky it was against a bad Oakland team or it would’ve been a lot more than 4 runs. Figured after that they would’ve given Brian Johnson a shot or maybe given another chance to Elias or Owens.

You’d get similar performances with all of them. They didn’t need Cy young. They just needed a guy to give them 5 or 6 average innings. They gave Owens and Elias a shot. They couldn’t hack it. They gave O’Sullivan a shot he couldn’t hack it. He was doing okay in AAA. Johnson wasn’t so he didn’t get the call. If he straightens it out maybe he will. But it’s more likely ERod or Kelly will be back with the team.

O’Sullivan was signed as pitching depth but the Sox can’t bury him deep enough. His career record shows how awful he is and always has been. At least they won his 2 starts.

He’ll get outrighted to Pawtucket, thanks for being an arm with a pulse for two starts Seany

We need pitching! We need to trade ASAP
oak87
No they need to wait for E-rod and Kelly to come back. After they get back give them some time and see how the rotation shakes out.

Agreed. See how those two (potentially) benefit the roster before making a panic move.

For who exactly? While Shields seems to be the best option his periphery numbers concern me and my guess is the Pads won’t ask for Sandoval.
hawkny11
A trade you say? How about sending Swihart, Owens and Buchholz to Atlanta for Julio Teheran and Nick Markakis. Atlanta wants to unload salary and rebuild. Boston can use an every day LF’er and starting pitcher. It would be worth sending cash to the Braves to sweeten the pot so as to make this deal.
staypuft
Throw in Pablo Sandoval and you might be able to get James Shields. /sarc
BadCo
A) they passed on Shields cause he is a flyball pitcher and gave up 30 plus dingers in Petco last year aka the Grand Canyon …..
B) I don’t give up on Sweihart
C) Andrew Bentdini (SP) just got promoted to AA and he is fast tracking … Aka we don’t need Markakis… But yeah Buchholtz falls under the term” headcase”..We need that bulldog type personality …. Turn it on guys!!!
mookiessnarl
You wouldn’t be giving up on Swihart, you’d be trading a valuable piece from a position of depth for something you need.
