Mets GM Sandy Alderson said today that the club is “not ruling anything out externally” as it deals with a significant injury to first baseman Lucas Duda, as ESPNNewYork.com’s Adam Rubin reports. Assistant GM John Ricco suggested recently that the club wasn’t content with what it has in house.
While the Mets are obviously interested to see what’s out there, Alderson suggested that there isn’t much urgency. “We’ll continue to monitor what’s available,” he said. “We haven’t at this point decided that we’re just going to go with what we have.”
One possibility that many have mentioned is to make a play for James Loney. He’s an established veteran with a high-on-base approach who’s playing well at Triple-A in the Padres organization, and New York has been said to have at least some “curiosity” in him.
New York has been scouting Loney, per Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter), but it certainly doesn’t appear that the team has rushed out to get him. Loney is not the only player that the club is looking at, according to that report. I recently ran down the different ways the team could go about filling the void, with Loney featuring as one of the most obvious options but far from the only one.
While it’s early to be dealing, Alderson called a trade “doable.” Nevertheless, he warned that it wouldn’t be easy to find and acquire the right piece. “The circumstances have to be right,” said the veteran executive. “Whether it’s doable or not is one thing. Actually pursuing it and trying to identify something is something else.”

Freeman to Mets.

Lol
NL_East_Rivalry
Would John C quit before they make the trade or would he give up his arm to be known as the GM that fleeced the rival?
Gogerty
Not like you really need both arms. Haha, can even throw in Flowers if the take Aybar and send back Smith.
Out of place Met fan
Flores returns this weekend. Give him and Kelly two weeks, with Soup mixed in. If production isn’t what Loney provides offer him a ML contract, forcing the Padres hand.
Should be around the time Duda is due for another MRI and x-ray, where they will have a more accurate timeline on his return. Then they will know if the Collins will work or if a starting caliber 1B is the need for the summer.
Granted my personal belief is they should target a Valencia, Valbuena, Coughlin type who will still have a role when/if Duda returns.
Fenway North
Want Allen Craig? I think he’s still alive.
redsguy1869
Jay Bruce can play first base. The Mets still down for that Wheeler for Bruce swap?
iamhector24
No thank you.
CTBrowns
Call Texas about Fielder. See if they’ll eat 1/2 his salary.
iamhector24
He’s batting .197 with no power. Flores is a MUCH better player at this point.
Ray Ray
No he’s not. He has had a better two months than Fielder, but he is NOT a better player than Fielder. Just last year Fielder was hitting over .300 with an All Star appearance. He is struggling, but Fielder has a much better chance of becoming Prince Fielder than Flores has of becoming Prince Fielder.
E Mac
he may have eaten the other half already
wedgeant27
More worried about what Princess would eat rather than Texas.
ernestofigueroa87
I’d trade for Coco Crisp to play 1B.He’s a switch hitter!
AngelFan69
Let’s trade CJ Cron for a whole bunch of good prospects … Or even Matt Harvey….
jrwhite21
HA
Brixton
Except CJ Cron’s only tool is power, and he hasn’t shown much of it.
chesteraarthur
They should trade for Dan Vogelbach of the cubs, because I’d like to see him play and that’s never gonna happen with rizzo.
Ray Ray
Not a bad thought, but what happens when Duda comes back in two months? They need a rental type guy that is good enough to start for a while, but not good enough to mind going to the bench in two months. James Loney of the Padres, Allen Craig of the Red Sox (if Boston pays a good chunk), or Jon Singleton of the Astros would be a great idea. Lucroy, Votto, Freeman, and Fielder are not because they would need to start. Vogelbach and other prospects would not be either because they would still be stuck behind a solid starter as soon as Duda returns.
chieftoto
Also Freeman’s not because that’s never going to happen.
chesteraarthur
I imagine vogelbach is cheap at this point. He’s coming up on rule 5. Duda is also controlled for less time than rizzo. And in large part, my post was not entirely serious.
cubsfan2489
1. The Cubs aren’t going to help the Mets for a position they need.
2. Vogelbach won’t be cheap. He’ll be a part of a package for a big piece.
3. The Cubs have 3 open 40 man spots as of right now. If they want, they can add him to it if they think he’ll be taken in the rule 5 draft. (He definitely would)
raiders
They actually added him to the 40 man roster already.
Crewfan620
Lucroy is still a decent fit for the Mets as he would be an upgrade over d’Arnaud who is often injured. Problem for New York is that they may not be willing to part with the talent it will take to land him.
brewcat
I’d go for Ed Kranepool.
notagain27
Twins have Plouffe who can play multiple positions once Duda returns.
sorayablue
Scott Van Slyke for a reliever. He will be off the DL soon and the Dodgers don’t appear to have room for him.
TenaciousD
Have cron or Choi or both
philliesrule
Howard is available. Please take him!!!!
fanofcards
Cardinals need a starting pitcher. Matt Adams for any of them.
dtwb93
Adams and Moss for any of their SP would work for both sides.
