The Reds have claimed righty Dan Straily from the Padres, ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick tweets. It was reported earlier today that the Padres had placed Straily on waivers.
Straily spent most of last season pitching for the Astros’ Triple-A affiliate in Fresno, where he produced a 4.77 ERA, 9.1 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 in 122 2/3 innings. He previously spent about a season and a half in the Athletics’ rotation, though, and his combination of relative youth (27), controllability (he’s still not yet eligible for arbitration) and experience make him an understandable target for a rebuilding team like the Reds. Straily can also start or relieve, and he can be optioned. The Reds’ current role for him is unclear, but it’s easy to see how they might find him useful in a variety of contexts, particularly given their injury-ravaged rotation and unsettled bullpen.

Welp, throw him into that already dumpster fire that is the Reds bullpen
slasher016
I thought he was out of options?
disgruntledreader 2
He is. That’s why he was traded to SD and then on waivers in the first place.

Takes Jake Cave’s spot on the 40?
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Well that was fast.

I don’t think he goes (straight) to the bullpen – with 5 starters (Bailey, DeSclafani, Moscot, Lamb, Lorenzen) opening the season on the DL and the Game 3 starter being listed as TBD as of yesterday… the smart money is on Straily starting game 3.
Only Iglesias, Finnegan, Simon… and non-roster invitee Tim Melville (who’s had a mediocre spring) are currently healthy.

Great move by the Reds! Perfect landing spot.

Yeah I think it was a great move for both the player and the team. One of the few moves by the Reds that could be described as great, but credit where credit is due this time.

I agree… i think Straily has underachieved in the majors. Reds might be a good spot for him since their rotation is pretty bleh

What is San Diego doing? Was trading Kratz for Straily merely a ploy for San Diego t dump an $850k salary? Was San Diego looking to make a quick $20k (waiver money)? Makes no sense
bbatardo
If I had to guess the Padres were about to cut Kratz or send him to minors, then wanted to take a look at Straily and see if he had a spot based on any potential deals, but realized there wouldn’t be room for him. I suspect they are keeping 1 or both of the remaining Rule V pitchers they got. instead
jkim319
That totally makes sense… No harm no foul for Sam Diego. In the end they also made $20k

The reason they made the trade is because they thought they might be able to sneak Straily through waivers. Since he was out of options they had to get him through waivers before sending him to AAA. He was never going to make the major league roster but all they had to give up was their 4th string catcher who wasn’t going to make the team for an attempt to get him onto their AAA club.

good move by Reds. But the Article is incorrect on “and he can be optioned” He can not be optioned. He is out of options which is why the Astros traded him in the first place. They needed a backup catcher and he would not of made it through waivers anyways. So it worked out for both the Padres and Astros.
redsfanman
I doubt the Reds would option him if they could – even if he fails in the rotation he’s probably an upgrade to the bullpen.
If Straily doesn’t produce he’ll quickly be lost behind a swarm of other younger pitchers in Cincinnati. It’s a great opportunity for him, but his opportunity is now, not later. If he does well he’ll probably become trade bait, rather than part of the Reds’ future.

Straily can’t be optioned. Change the “he can be optioned” part.
