Major League Baseball has extended the paid administrative leave period of Braves outfielder Hector Olivera by two weeks to allow further investigation of his arrest for alleged domestic violence, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (Twitter links). Olivera is facing charges in Virginia for misdemeanor assault and battery.
Olivera had been placed on the preliminary one-week leave period contemplated under the domestic violence policy by commissioner Rob Manfred, which was due to expire tomorrow. Rosenthal says that the policy contemplates extension of that time, with the union agreeing to the two week period in this case.
Manfred has issued decisions on two matters that arose under the domestic violence policy since its inception, handing Aroldis Chapman a 30-game suspension and finding no cause for discipline relating to Yasiel Puig. But he has yet to act on the recently-arising Olivera matter or the late 2015 arrest of Jose Reyes. The Rockies infielder has been on paid administrative leave since the start of spring camp, and his status remains in limbo — despite the fact that charges against him were dropped at the end of March because the alleged victim (his wife) declined to cooperate.
It bears stressing that neither conviction nor criminal charges are necessary for a violation of the policy to be found to have occurred; indeed, neither took place in Chapman’s case. The commissioner is vested with broad powers to investigate and punish offenders.

This guy has just turned into a disaster. We got him with the hope he could play 3rd and he can’t. He is below sverage in LF defensively. Hopefully he turns it around.
Gogerty
Not sure what to hope for; it is untrue and brush it under the rug or it is true, suspended the season and recoup some money before the teams drops him.
WAH1447
This was by far the dumbest trade the braves did this guy is terrible anyways, they should find a way to void his contract and send him on his way back to Cuba
Gogerty
No, still calling the Texiera trade the dumbest by the Braves.
jrudd12
No, dumbest Braves trade was Adam Wainwright for one year of JD Drew, albeit it was a good year from Drew
cjb
You guys are right…. Both trades were very very stupid
shane7ramsey
Dodgers got rid of him at the right time apparently… Oh well braves fans y’all rebuilding anyways

on a side note, why is it that 99 percent of the time it is the foreign players committing these crimes? They get paid millions to live their dream, the least they can do is be a positive influence to all the kids watching. There should be some kind of harsher punishment for foreign players, as they are lucky enough just to be here. MLB could very well allow American born players only if they really wanted to. I have nothing against foreign players, half of the Giants are Hispanic of some sort and I love them all. But there should be some kind of punishment or program put in place to avoid these players from making a mistake such as this. In their home countries maybe these things get brushed aside but they must learn America has zero tolerance for this action. it’s a shame to see such a great player like Aroldis Chapman miss 20 percent of the season for something that should never happen.

That’s a slippery slope Shane.

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read! As a medical professional I’ve never seen any of these race distinctions that you speak of related to domestic violence. I have worked in the Emergency Dept for years and I’m trained to pick up subtle signs of domestic violence. None of those signs include race or socioeconomic status.
cjb
Agreed

My wife has also lived in another country south of the US for multiple years and the repayment for mistreating women and children is much stricter… Sometimes death. Don’t kid yourself about other countries. Feel free to get a passport and travel a little bit and experience it for yourself. The 4 continents I’ve visited have taught me many things about humans.
danpartridge
99 percent, huh? You pull that number out of where you keep your brains there, Tex?

Labeling someone as an abuser is a really good way to attack their character; sometimes people attack other’s characters for reasons that are not totally pure. Sometimes money and power hang in the balance. In that case, it is always important to remember that whoever benefits may be in some way behind the rush to judgment.

And just remember, folks. His vote counts the same as yours.
Terribly offensive comnent

While you’re at it, You forgot to mention you have a couple of African American friends! By far the DUMBEST comment I’ve read on these boards. What about the people that LIVE here, know the laws/penalties, but STILL break them?? SMH
disadvantage
You managed to get all that out without starting with “I’m not racist, but…”? Impressive.
No Soup For Yu!
Why would he start with that? He’s clearly unapologetic about this sort of thing. He should have started with, “I am racist, and…”

Because the USA is the only place in the world with domestic violence laws? Ya right. Just spent 3 months in South America and didn’t see any issues of it. Live in Canada, and believe it or not, us Canucks, one of the most peaceful of people, have issues and situations of domestic violence here as well. Just because you live somewhere it doesn’t make you and the people of your community better than anyone else. There are situations of everything everywhere.
DTI812
I am not defending Shane but what he asked was why is it 99% foreign born players? And everyone jumped him. Let’s look at this- chapman, puieg, olivera and Reyes. That’s 4 out of 4 which is closer to 100%.
I think the point is based on the recent set of circumstances in baseball not society. Not to speak for you Shane.
I agree.
baseballrat
Actually, DT, Puig is not in that category b/c he was cleared in the altercation with a bouncer. To group a whole class of people b/c of 3 is still incredibly STUPID. BTW….. it does sound like you are defending Shane, which is stupid also.
DTI812
Neither stupid or defending him. Not talking about society where the numbers go up and percentages go down(some what) talking about 4 cases that happened recently to MLB players. Stop being led by the liberal media.

How about Chuck Knoblauch? Josh Lueke? Brett Myers? Kirby Puckett? Milton Bradley? Maybe the local players only commit more serious crimes like vehicular manslaughter while drunk driving (see Matt Bush).
baseballrat
There you go. Way to inject politics, just like a teabagger. Yea. You are STUPID

I’m not even going there. Some opinions are better left unspoken. Hated the trade then, hate it now. Not confident of Hart’s ( and to some degree Copalella) mehod of rebuild. All the young pitchers have to reach their once heralded potential as high draft picks in order for a solid team to be built…..and what’s the probability of all those arms reaching potential…can you say Foltynewicz?… a bullpen arm in the long run… Meanwhile leaving fans with little to root for and hope is weighed down by prospects achieving potential. Hate the move to Smyrna….like I’m gonna get there in time for 1st pitch with traffic…will need to leave at 3pm for a 7pm game….I don’t believe we’ll be a contending team next yr or the year after. Granted Hart has made some fantastic trades but Oliveras was not one of them.
T_Rexx2
Did you even see the Shelby Miller trade? Yeah the Olivera trade wasn’t great but that Shelby Miller trade makes up for it and then some.
steelerbravenation
The Olivera trade was not as bad as everybody seems to be making it out to be. Peraza doesn’t seem to be heralded as he once was and Alex Wood from his arrival to the big leagues was always described as a long term bullpen piece with an inevitable injury ready to happen because of his delivery.
Now $ 5 million for Olivera because that is what we are paying him is not bad. He was suppose to be a 3rd baseman but has had to move to the OF. Nobody foresaw him gettin locked up and possibly suspended. But even if you walk away with a platoon partner for Inciarte (can’t hit lefties) and a solid LHP bullpen arm in Paco which by the way has always rated better than Avilan I don’t look at that as a terrible deal. In Hart/Coppy I trust.
I could bring up a bunch of Schuerholtz deals that were worse than that deal. Wainwright for JD Drew ring a bell or how bout the Tex deal.
baseballrat
But….. Schuerholtz had a contender every year, despite the trade he made. BIG difference
Salionski
Schuerholz also took over a team that had top young (under control for multiple years) talent in place prior to him taking over. Most of the core of those early winning days was in place before he arrived. And then he ended up having the luxury of a top payroll team during most of his run as the GM. Big differences as well compared to the situation Coppy had to step into.
Schuerholz was a pretty phenomenal GM. The situations just are too wildly different to make any comparisons. Especially at this point.
gobraves007
We also received a top 40 pick in the 2016 draft and Zach Bird. It wasn’t a horrible deal. All the negative opinions about the deal are usually from people being unrealistic about Wood and Peraza’s value. If Olivera is a bust the draft pick and Zach Bird should make up for it.
Avilan and Paco were a wash. At the time of the trade Avilan was healthy and Paco was on the DL..The dodgers needed bullpen help and the Braves weren’t in contention so getting a guy on the DL with one extra year of team control was the better option. The Texiera trade was the worst in franchise history. .
