There’s plenty of trade chatter as camp approaches, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports writes in a column today. That’s already been made evident by the notable deal struck earlier this evening. As always, a full read is recommended, but here are some of the highlights of the post:
- The Orioles would prefer to add Dexter Fowler after signing Yovani Gallardo — assuming they can get that deal done — says Rosenthal. But if that doesn’t work out for some reason, Baltimore’s backup plan would be to pursue a deal for Jay Bruce. The Reds appear to have realistic expectations with the veteran, who hasn’t been consistently productive in recent years and is owed $12.5MM this year (with a $13MM option for another season). Indeed, getting something done would likely require rather modest expectations. Though Bruce has shown quite a bit of talent over the years, and is still shy of thirty years of age, his track record over the past two seasons (.222/.288/.406) isn’t inspiring.
- The White Sox could be a threat on Fowler or other free agent outfielders, per the report. Chicago seems to have more interest in adding there than in pursuing Ian Desmond, as the team likes its internal options at shortstop. The South Siders are pushing on multiple fronts and might well also line up a deal for Avisail Garcia if they make a significant addition. The willingness to be flexible and seek creative avenues to value could certainly serve the Sox well as the winter wraps up; the team already seems to have done well in securing Mat Latos at just $3MM.
- Chicago’s interest in Andre Ethier has been overstated, says Rosenthal, but the Dodgers have indeed explored trade scenarios. It’s a complicated decision, as he notes, since Ethier has been plenty useful. Then there’s the fact that his contract status comes with some intricacies. Ethier is set to reach ten-and-five rights early in the year, and his vesting clause poses a bit of a barrier for possible suitors. From my perspective, it remains somewhat difficult to see another organization being willing to take on enough salary (and/or give back enough value) to make a deal work out. There’s $38MM still to go over two years, plus the threat of a reasonably attainable vesting clause, and that’s quite a bit for a player who will soon turn 34 and would come with expectations of being a solid regular rather than a difference maker.
- While the Padres are still looking around for deals, discussing players like Matt Kemp and Derek Norris, near-term deals for those prominent names appear unlikely. Likewise, the Athletics have had talks involving Billy Butler, and may even have had one opportunity to deal the struggling DH. Butler is more expendable than ever with Khris Davis now in the fold, though that addition hardly makes a trade inevitable given how much Butler is owed. Oakland will presumably hope he can rebuild value by carrying momentum from a solid finish to an otherwise rough 2015.
ZantiGM
i would have rather had kris davis than acq jay bruce
EndinStealth72
Give Davis 600 at bats and he’ll hit 30-35 dingers.
A'sfaninUK
Sean Nolin & Billy Butler for Matt Kemp. SD trades Kemp’s 4/87 deal for Butler’s 2/23 deal and get Nolin out of the salary dump. They can use him at 1B/bench bat or just eat Butler’s salary, as 23 mill is a lesser pill than 87. Oakland gets a RF replacement for Reddick if he can’t be extended and can roll out this lineup out on opening day 2016:
CF Burns/Crisp
RF Reddick
DH Davis
LF Kemp
C Vogt/Phegley
SS Semien
3B Valencia
2B Lowrie/Ladendorf
1B Alonso/Canha
Twinsfan79
No way A’s eat money.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Yes, I imagine the Padres would have to eat some of Kemps salary.
A'sfaninUK
A’s aren’t “eating” money, they are adding essentially 64 mill over 4 years to pay Kemp to play everyday by getting rid of Butler’s 23 mill. Kemp has more value to them than SD.
marley321
Crisp if healthy will play LF but that even looks hazy with Davis in the fold, Canha is very capable of play left as well so why spend half of their pay roll for an aging OF with 2 bum hips?

Ethier and Alex Guerrero for CJ Wilson
Michigan Dodger Fan
Why would the Dodgers do that? They have rotation depth already and Ethier is more valuable to them than Wilson would be. Seems more likely Wood gets packaged with either Andre or Guerrero to someone like Baltimore, White Sox, or Yankees.
BlueSkyLA
No, no, that’s the way it’s supposed to work. The Dodgers give up useful players for someone they don’t need.
gregn213
CJ Wilson projects to have an ERA next year that is higher than any of 6 possible Dodgers starters, so there would be no place for him. And his salary is $20M.
retirement13
I would be very interesting that after all this speculation about trades and free agents regarding the White Sox that they ended up doing nothing.
jimmyz
Getting Brett Lawrie, Todd Frazier, and Mat Latos without significantly subtracting from the MLB team isn’t nothing.
A'sfaninUK
lol sure man, the Toddfather is “nothing”.
retirement13
You are both correct gentleman. I was referring to the speculation during the past 2-3 weeks.
EndinStealth72
Andrew Either is not an upgrade. San Diego acquired him in an effort to upgrade their offense. It didn’t work for them. Now they want to move him. Oakland would be no better with him.
EndinStealth72
Everyone ignore this comment. it makes no sense. lol
tycobb016
sox got something up their sleeve. bruce is affordable. not sure what theyre gonna do. something good will happen
seamaholic 2
Jeez, if Desmond doesn’t go to the White Sox, I’m out of ideas. Who’s left? This dude was a 4 WAR SS as recently as 2014, and isn’t old. But I can’t think of who might sign him.
virginiascopist
The White Sox would be a good fit for Desmond, but if not there, maybe the Rockies for a year. With Reyes facing a criminal trial, likely MLB suspension and (from what I gather) possible deportation, they look like they could benefit from Desmond on a pillow contract. If he performs well, they could flip him at the trade deadline or maybe make him a QO at the end of the year. No better place than Coors Field for a hitter to re-establish value.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Rockies already have Trevor Story
A'sfaninUK
Just bring up Tim Anderson, he was great at AA and is 23 this year. Perfect timing.
crazy Jawa
O’s plan is to get mediocre pitching but one heck of a line up. As long as the pitching can keep the opponents to 6 runs or less they should win.
camosteve
Really it’s gonna be about the starters going at least 6-7 innings most nights, the bullpen should dominate. I believe adding Fowler gives them the best offense in the east. Fowler not a great hitter but a career obp above .360 is exactly what they need. Contenders with Gallardo and Fowler, .500 without.
A'sfaninUK
The Royals had a mediocre rotation last season and won a championship.
Deke
@just another fan. Just for the record I like that you’re active on these boards, intelligent and I haven’t noticed you being rude to anyone. I could be wrong because I haven’t seen everything you’ve ever written but to me it seems like you genuinely add intelligent commentary and just wanted to say “thanks”. It’s nice to read comments that aren’t written by people who are just being mean to people and trying to press buttons.
IndianaBob
Weak division , which will be stronger this year. Crap the AL as a whole was weak. They have a decent chance of missing the playoffs this year.
virginiascopist
Wasn’t that the strategy of the Red Sox going into last season?
tycobb016
fowler zero games in lf zero games in rf lifetime. gotta be bruce or desmond still.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Well tech he has played in Rf for an inning. It makes sense as both him and eaton can flip flop between center and a corner. Fowler could easily play LF.
gorav114
Has their ever been any speculation of Big Country being connected to ped’s? How can a player that was doing so well just fall off a cliff and show minimal signs of recovery? Is it realistic to expect he will ever perform at an above average level again? Such a disappointment
triberulz
Oakland aquires Santana/Wolters, Cleveland aquires Butler/Reddick/Nolin. The Wolters DFA is curious, Otero has no shot at making the team after Hunter’s signing . Oakland just traded there top catching prospect, and is first in line on the waiver wire. Since Billy Beane liked Joey Wendle (Moss Trade) ,Wolters is the same type of prospect adjusting from SS/2B to C. Butler & Santana contracts are just about equal. The Indians need an outfielder with Brantley injured. Oakland has a surplus of OF’s with the Kris Davis acquisition. Nolin would give the Indians LHP protection if TJ House doesn’t hold up with his shoulder issues.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Hard to see clev taking on that salary. Essentially Santana has ~10 mill guaranteed compared to 20 for Butler. They can cut bait with Santana after this year. Butler takes away from that roster flexibility.
A'sfaninUK
The A’s and Indians do not match up in any way, shape or form. Stop it.
itsbob826
The Ethier problem is not as bad as it looks. His vesting issue (550 PA in ’16, or 1100 PA in ’16/’17) won’t happen if he’s used correctly, which is strictly in a platoon. Man never has (and can’t) hit LHP. He is however a force vs. RHP and a legit clutch hitter. If the Dodgers decide they can trust Puig, he’s gone. If he isn’t gone, Fear of Puig is why.
tycobb016
dont know if mlb speculated about butler and steroids. i think he did. i was also thinking ortiz still does. maybe there is an exceptable level of steroids like the nfl has. quite a few others too i suspect. i wish they would tell the story. canseco said 85% were using when he played, McGwire said in 1998 that everyone he knew in baseball was using the same stuff he was using, Pedro said he thinks 60% were using when he played, Byrnes said in 2015 there are more than one user in the hof. i would love to hear the whole story.
camosteve
Fowler gives the O’s best offense in the east imo.
RF Fowler
3B Machado
1B Davis
CF Jones
C Wieters
DH Trumbo
2B Schoop
LF Kim
SS Hardy
Love that line up
pullhitter445
Torontos is a lot better than that lineup
Trevor 3
Better maybe, but a lot better? A lot is a big statement. What is it like 4 letters? I’d go with a smidge better.
sixpacktwo
Trade for Bruce, and get power, defense. Keep Draft picks. move Trumbo to DH.
misterb71
You are insane to think that the A’s would bring on a single player contract that meets or exceeds what the rest of the 24-man roster is going to cost for 2016. Kemp to Oakland is stupid beyond anything else I’ve heard in the last decade.
A'sfaninUK
Yeah, that’s why its been brought up multiple times over the last 2 years, you clown.
bleacherbum
Exactly, I hate how ignorant people are on here. A rumor breaks on a valid source such as The Bleacher Report and we sit back as fans and try to analyze how we think a deal could get done by trying to put ourselves in the GM’s shoes. But troll’s like this guy want to make it sound like you created the rumor yourself and knock every idea we come up with for a trade scenario that makes sense. For the record, I agree with everything you have said on the Kemp topic, he isn’t a useless player and he does have value to the right team and I think that the A’s are one of those teams. They dump a bad salary that they have been trying to dump in Butler, and swap him out with Kemp who will give them far more for essentially the same price for the next 2 seasons.
Injediwetrust
Why would the Pads do that? Kemp might be expensive but hes the most credible player on the team. A veteran presence and productive offensively. If you factor in what LA paid and will pay in 12M more over 4 more years Kemp equates to a 15M AAV for the 5 years he is signed. Makes it alot more sense to keep him.
bleacherbum
I think the idea of moving him solely rests on the fact that we are rebuilding and aren’t going to be competitive this year. I see your point about keeping him because “it’s all we got” type scenario but I think it just stalls the fact that we need to let the kids play and start to sort things out and see what we have. Ideally, if we could get rid of Kemp and Upton Jr to allow Blash, Jankowski and Renfroe to play the outfield by the second half of the season I think that would be huge for the future of this organization to see what we have here.
Let’s make no bones about it, nobody wants to see their team tank or take a back seat to the others in the division but with what LA, SF & AZ all did this offseason to what they already had it makes them far superior than us. Why not take a step back, slowly but surely start to tear this thing down, let Preller bring in young talent through the draft and international period and build this thing the correct way like Houston and Chicago. It’s not sexy to do by any means and fans hate it but it’s what’s best for the long term success of the franchise. So, by letting Kemp go we save 82 million over the next 4 years and free up a roster space to allow one of the kids to play.
Arthur
Come on white sox, make a move. At this point I don’t think they should give up a draft pick for a scrub like Desmond, they don’t need another high strikeout player. They should call Atl and ask them about Erick aybar, he’s only on 1 year deal and they’re prob not trying to keep him if they’re not contending, then get Austin Jackson and call if an offseason
misterb71
Yet, it’s never happened has it?
al10
The White Sox are in a ‘win now’ mode with all the talent they have. There is pressure on the manager, players, and upper management. They’ve committed to winning instead of rebuilding during the upcoming year(s). Send Garcia to the Reds for Jay Bruce, or send him to AAA to work on his new batting stance. There is a lot on the line right now for the ChiSox! Desmond is a waste of time!. Look at Saladino and Anderson for the answer at SS with patience. Bruce needs a change of scenery, still in his prime, can provide good defense in RF, and can pay big dividends. He would be a lot better than LaRoche . They can save their draft picks, and just make a painless trade.
Strauss
Hey Reinsdorf , are you alive? What kind of pictures does Williams and Ventura have onyou?
nrd1138
JR is notoriously loyal to his management, many times at the detriment of his teams (I think the Bulls have the same issue as GarPax should be gone, or at least one of them). He believes too much in KW and his ego because he won one WS in the 10+ years as GM. Ventura is still there because of KW and his ego in not wanting to admit his major gaff in bringing in Ventura to begin with. I think Hahn wants the training wheels off, but I think JR has no faith in Hahn until he can get this team to the playoffs, which is doubtful as long as Robin and his lackadaisical management style are in the locker room.
