Highly touted Cuban outfielder Lazaro Armenteros (aka “Lazarito”) will spend the next 24 hours mulling his options and is expected to decide on a team tomorrow, reports MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez. Lazaro himself told Sanchez recently that he hoped to make a decision tomorrow, though he left open the possibility that the decision process could take longer. “I’m planning on making a decision on [Wednesday], but only God knows what will happen and when I will sign,” Armenteros said to Sanchez. “I’m not worried about it. I’m just waiting on the right opportunity.” The ballyhooed 16-year-old is drawing serious interest from nine clubs, according to Sanchez, including the Braves, Cubs, Dodgers, Padres and Phillies.
Of that group, the Braves, Phillies and Padres would need to either exceed their 2015-16 international bonus pool in order to sign Lazarito or convince him to wait until the 2016-17 international signing period before signing. Both the Braves and Padres have been said to be planning on vastly overshooting their 2016-17 international pools, and Sanchez notes that the Phillies are in a similar boat, as they’re expected to have an impressive class of international signings next period as well. Signing Lazarito in the current period would prevent any of those three clubs from following through on those plans, as his bonus would force the teams into penalty territory and bar them from signing a player for more than $300K in the 2016-17 class (and again in the 2017-18 class, for that matter). Each team almost certainly has verbal agreements already in place with international amateurs, which would have to be broken in order to sign Armenteros.
Thus far in the 2015-16 signing period, the Cubs, Dodgers, Giants and Royals have incurred maximum penalties by overshooting their pools, meaning that the only cost to one of those four clubs would be purely financial. (Armenteros’ bonus plus a 100 percent luxury tax on the amount for which he signs.) Meanwhile, the Red Sox, Yankees, Angels, Diamondbacks and Rays would all be ineligible to sign Armenteros after exceeding their 2014-15 bonus pools and incurring spending penalties on this year’s class and the 2016-17 class of international free agents.
Armenteros was declared a free agent by Major League Baseball a little over a month ago and has since hosted an open showcase in addition to private workouts for multiple clubs, the most recent of which came on Monday, per Sanchez (though he lists the team involved in that private workout as “undisclosed”). Armenteros has worked out as both a center fielder and corner outfielder, drawing praise for his power, speed and athleticism. Sanchez ranks him eighth among international prospects and second among those that have not already signed, although the current iteration of his rankings does not include the Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (who has not yet been declared a free agent) or any international free agent that is exempt from international bonus pools. In his scouting reports, Sanchez notes that there’s a wide variance in scouts’ opinions on Lazarito’s arm, and some scouts have questioned how his “muscular college-football-player body” will look as he continues to grow. Armenteros is already listed at 6’2″ and 205 pounds, and if he continues to add to that frame, a move to the corner outfield certainly seems like a reasonable outcome.

If he choose The Cubs in two year he could break in with other young team mates in there minors plus what’s on the parent team could become the best team in the history of the game if Scwhaber can become a catcher
carlsoce
Cubs fans are delusional!!! Best team in the history of baseball??!! Are you out of your mind? Normally those kinds of teams have multiple World Series wins, not a drought of 108 years.
MonsterPike
Hey carl, I believe his words were “…could become…” Not that they are. I mean, it’s right there in black & white. At least on my laptop it is. 🙂

two things are hilarious.
And I’m not going to say him signing with the Cubs is hilarious b/c nobody knows who he will sign with except him and his agent or whomever..
1) A Cubs fans spelled Schwarber wrong ..
2) He won’t be in the minors in 2 years. He will start playing in the minors after signing say this year in 2017 as earliest (unless he is ridiculously advanced which he isn’t). He would then need at least 3-4 years in the US to go through A ball, A+ ball, AA, and AAA..
So you’re looking at 4-5 years at the minimum to see him sniff the majors.
tim815
Valid points.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
He’ll probably spend 2 years in the DSl before coming stateside. Then you are probably looking at 4 years after. Reports mention his rawness which means he will probably take a lot longer.
MonsterPike
Umm, ok, David, your point 1 is a real knee slapper…. Really? In this day & age of iPhone, Androids, etc., w/small keyboards & “autocorrect” you’re going to point out a commenter’s name spelling error…. **rolls eyes** I believe we all knew who he meant.. Even you by spelling it correctly.. What would we ever do w/out your brilliance…
And your point 2 is “hilarious” in it’s own right… Clear as mud. You said, “He won’t be in the minors in 2 years.” Then you say, “He will start playing in the minors after signing say this year in 2017 as earliest….” Great grammar there & it still doesn’t make sense LoL!! But even then that’s less than 2 years, but then you go on & say, “He would need at least 3-4 years in the US to go through A ball, A+ ball, AA & AAA.” Hey David, pssst, that is “the minors” LoL!!! In 1 sentence you say he wont be in the minors in 2 years, the next 1 you say he will be, then the next one you say he will be in the US for 3-4 years to go thru A, A+, AA & AAA, which are all minors… Make up your mind, Please.. Next time read what theBare wrote before writing your “hilarious” reply then proof read it before posting. Pot calling kettle comes to mind.. 😉
Now that was “hilarious”
MonsterPike
Ha ha, yeah. I don’t care about grammar, as long as I can understand what the person is saying. I hate the grammar police on the internet, especially w/all the gadgets now, so I police them. Not everyone is pounding away on a typewriter computer keyboard, LoL!! Especially when we’re out & all we have are our stinking thumbs on 3″x5″ touch screens of which only 1/3rd is the keyboard…. 🙂

Win something first. From an overall standpoint the Cubs are one of the worst teams in the history of the game. The self proclaimed dynasty talk is rather premature.
tim815
Cubs fan here.
Lazarito won’t sign with the Cubs. The Dodgers, Braves, and Phillies (probably in that order) make quite a bit more sense.
Don’t sweat it when he signs elsewhere.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I don’t see the braves blowing their international budget this year. Unless they can entice him to wait until July. But it seems like there is enough interest that they’d have to absurdly overpay.
tim815
They’ll agree to sign him in July. Or the Phillies. Or the Padres.
Turtle
Well, the Big Red Machine and the ’27 Yankees might beg to differ, but the Cubs do have considerable talent. Turning it into championships isn’t easy.
JoeyPankake
So with these super young international signings do they just drop out of high school, or were they never in school? Do the signing teams have some sort of academy in place where they get a diploma while still being primarily baseball first? Always been curious about these situations.
tim815
The Cubs have an educational set-up where the players (regardless the pedigree) take courses in language among other things. All teams should commit to making their investments more ready to produce as people and players.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
It depends on the area and poverty. Played and coached with kids who went to school, others who went to sports type academies, and others who were in farm type situations where baseball were the only ways out and parent needed them to work. I don’t know much about the other questions.
FrozenRopes
Speaking of workouts, any idea when Lincecum will have his?

I’ve read mid to late February.

Someone’s salty about the rebuilding process… Braves have done very well in deals shipping off some of their players, including the Shelby Miller and Andrelton Simmons deals. Don’t sweat it man, just a few more seasons of losing and the Braves will be really fun to watch.
yarritsblake
Goodness, do you realize how far the Braves farm system has come in the last three years? Oh sure, they had talented players on the roster, but nothing really with which to compete in the recently highly competitive NL East. Unfortunately for them I believe a lot of that had to do with the significant injuries to pitchers they figured would form the core of a future awesome rotation (i.e. Brandon Beachy, Kris Medlen, Jo-Jo Reyes, etc), and other prospects didn’t pan out as planned (i.e. Jordan Schafer, Marte, etc) and trading away good players for one year rentals (*cough Mark Teixeira *cough for Andrus, Harrison, Feliz, etc). So, recently ownership realized they didn’t have enough prospects in the high minors to replenish the major league roster, and didn’t have the financial might to entice free agents, so they traded their top talent (as much as it hurt) to bring in an enormous amount of low and high minor level prospects and make themselves very competitive for the future.
Zack Autry
For every part of me that wholeheartedly loves every bit of the rebuild, it’s not going to be 100% accurate in all its facets…there will be failed prospects, failed signings and injury- shortened careers…just hopefully not every prospect will be a bust.
And as far as building around a team…lets hope with revenue from the new park, the FO will have the ability to properly build a winner.
venga777
Magic got this two on the radar.
Turtle
Might Cincinnati be a sleeper in this chase? The Reds are strong in Cuba and if Alfredo Rodriguez’s $6 million pushes them well above their bonus pool anyway, they might be willing to spend to add a bat to a system deep in pitching but lacking in numbers of impact hitters.
tim815
Will they pay $20 mil plus penalties? If not, no go.
Senioreditor
I imagine the Dodgers will outspend everyone and sign him.
Zack Autry
Braves need to go big or go home in this year’s Intl class….just not in this signing period. The same way they “have had a handshake agreement” with Kevin Maitan, they should have, and probably have pursued the same deal for Armenteros. Maybe promising him more money…maybe promising him a major part in an organization that vows to win for a long time…i dont know if it would work…but if he desires to win more than make money (for a 16 year old young man from Cuba, I doubt he does, quite honestly and understandably) then he may agree to the proposal. Ive read since last year when the Braves began to be linked to him, Kevin Maitan has been referred to as a “kid who cares about winning 1st and foremost”, which leads me to believe the Braves thought the chances of another team swooping in last minute and luring him in with more money only to be slim.
Having said all this, Maitan is still the number one priority, Lazarito. Abraham Gutierrez is another guy on everyone’s radar..there’s depth in this class, and blowing it all by signing Lazarito on February 10th when they could wait until July and have Maitan and whoever else they desire enough.
Frank Richard
Curious what the dollar projections are on this guy. Also it seems to me that the teams that have already blown their budgets and can’t sign another player as of July would be more willing to throw money now because they won’t be able to soon. Cubs and Dodgers seem like the most likely teams to sign him before the July deadline. Should he wait until after that the Yankees, Braves, and Red Sox seem like real possibilities.
disgruntledreader 2
The Yankees and Red Sox will not be able to spend over $300K for any player in the 2016-17 signing period. But other than that, they’re real possibilities.

Well, 16 is technically Sophmore/Junior in High School. So “12” & “middle school” is a wee bit off. He’s almost 17, so in 5 or 6 years when he’s on the cusp of making the bigs, you might be saying you’re pretty happy they signed that guy when he was a kid.. Eventually 2021,2022 will get here. Or maybe you trade him for say, Shelby Miller. Oops, you did that once, w/a guy named Jason something. 😉
phils2020
whte ever happened to him signing ? still looking at offers?
