The Orioles have yet to address their rotation this offseason despite early offseason claims that it was the team’s top priority, writes MASNsports.com’s Roch Kubatko. While the Orioles were at one point “deep” in negotiations with Yovani Gallardo, they now appear reluctant to part with the No. 14 overall pick to sign Gallardo. As an alternative, Kubatko writes that Padres right-hander Andrew Cashner is a name to watch, as the team has some interest in the free-agent-to-be.
Cashner, 29, was reportedly being shopped by the Padres earlier this offseason, although to this point, San Diego has elected to trade only from its bullpen (Craig Kimbrel, Joaquin Benoit, Marc Rzepczynski) as opposed to parting the three members of its rotation that have been oft-reported as available on the trade market (Cashner, Tyson Ross, James Shields). Cashner pitched a career-best 184 1/3 innings for the Padres in 2015, but he also took notable steps back in ERA (2.55 in 2014, 4.34 in 2015) and walk rate (2.1 BB/9 in 2014, 3.2 in 2015). Last season wasn’t all bad, however, as Cashner’s 8.0 K/9 rate was the highest in any of his full seasons as a starting pitcher, and his fastball velocity actually increased half a mile per hour over its 2014 average — rising from 94.3 to 94.8.
The Padres and Cashner agreed to a one-year, $7.15MM salary earlier this month, thus avoiding arbitration for the final time. Cashner is set to become a free agent following the season and as such would be a short-term acquisition for the Orioles (or any other team with trade interest). Baltimore, of course, has parted with a significant amount of its prospect depth in recent seasons, dealing names like Zach Davies, Eduardo Rodriguez, Steven Brault and Stephen Tarpley, among others, in deadline and offseason trades. That Cashner has just one season remaining and saw a notable jump in his ERA this past season certainly figures to lower the cost of acquisition, but the fact that Padres were said to be “pushing” Cashner in trades at the Winter Meetings but still didn’t make a deal serves as a reminder that they’re probably looking for a notable return.
Trade talks in general have been difficult for the Orioles as they’ve sought to upgrade in the rotation, per Kubatko, as teams have persistently asked Baltimore for Kevin Gausman, who could be the club’s best shot at having a top-of-the-rotation-caliber starter himself. One alternative suggested by Kubatko is right-hander Mat Latos, who could likely be had on a one-year deal as he looks to rebuild his stock coming off a poor and injury-riddled 2015 season. The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo wrote a bit about Latos over the weekend, noting that one NL official felt a strong manager such as Buck Showalter (or Bruce Bochy or Dusty Baker) would benefit Latos, who can be “too outspoken for his own good.” Latos was excellent for the Padres and Reds from 2010-14, posting a combined 3.27 ERA across those five seasons, but a knee injury cost him about half of the 2014 season, and his peripheral stats slipped upon return. Last year, his ERA fell off as well, when he worked to a 4.95 ERA in 116 1/3 innings between the Marlins, Dodgers and a brief late cameo with the Angels.

I wonder if the O’s are still waiting to see if Dylan Bundy and Hunter Harvery are going to break camp to be in the rotation, I know Bundy is out of options.
sals029
Neither has a chance to break camp in the rotation.
Buddy is out of options, if he’s healthy at the start of the season he will be in the bullpen. He just hasn’t thrown enough innings over the last 3 years (63) to be in a ML rotation.
Harvey hasn’t pitched in an actual game since 2014 and has never pitched above low A.
BarrelMan
Matt Garza is available cheap.
Philliesfan4life
He needs to go out west, maybe to the dbacks or maybe the angels
Joe McMahon
The O’s need at least two starters to have a competent rotation.
Philliesfan4life
Unless they are banking on Bundy and then Gausman to break out.
Joe McMahon
Gausman will likely be pretty good, but honestly, they need two starters IF he’ good. If he’s bad, then they’re really screwed. They have no one else. Based on projections, which can be wrong of course, Gausman and Jimenez are projected to be average, Tillman is projected to be below average and Miguel Gonzalez is projected to be bad. I don’t even know who their 5th starter will be if Bundy isn’t healthy. With a good Gausman, they have two #3’s, one #4, maybe a #5-6 and nothing else. Without Gausman, they have like a one #3, one #4 and then a bunch of holes which is….ouch.
misterb71
While I won’t argue against the O’s needing at least one upgrade to the starting rotation, remember that Tillman, Gonzalez, Jimenez and Gausman were responsible for just over 100 starts the year the team won 96 games in ’14. While it looks thin on paper, Showalter has demonstrated he can win with most of these arms in the rotation.
GRob78
Whole rotation is a giant “what if” again this year. What if:
– Gausman figures out a third pitch
– Bundy/Harvey can make the rotation
– Tillman gets his stuff back
– Jimenez can keep his control together
They had a couple of shots to get solid guys in FA. Duquette looks like he’s banking on “what ifs” this year. Opening Day rotation will probably end up being Tillman, Jimenez, Gausman, Gonzalez, and Wright. Doubt that will be the rotation at the All-Star Break though. Team has been cycling out the pitching prospects pretty fast in the last several seasons. Losing guys like Arieta, Rodriguez, and Davies. At least the back of the bullpen is solid (Givens, O’Day, Britton.)
Philliesfan4life
Bundy will prolly be in the bullpen since he is out of options
GRob78
That’s probably true. I suspect he’s going to begin in a LRP role at first. His arm issues are worrisome.
Philliesfan4life
Bundy is going to end up being like Jeff Samrdizja
therealryan
At this point the Orioles would be ecstatic if Bundy has a career anywhere near Samardzija’s. With all the injuries and missed development time, it’s very possible that Bundy is nothing but a middle reliever with a lot of “what could have been?”
BoldyMinnesota
I think the orioles have to many holes to compete this year and a couple starters are not enough(unless one of those starters is Tyson Ross). I know it seems crazy, but why not trade Machado for one of the biggest hauls ever had? If Shelby Miller got the first overall pick + some, just imagine what he’d get. And by the time these prospects will be ready in a couple of years, the Red Sox, Yankees and Jays will likely be significantly worse, making them the favourites for the east
Philliesfan4life
the O’s would be really dumb to trade Machado even though he would bring back a big haul.
BoldyMinnesota
It would be hard to trade him i just feel they’re kind of stuck in the middle of being good and bad, and by doing that they wouldnt have to do a complete rebuild, just a remake of sorts
Philliesfan4life
If they traded Machado , the O’s fans would not be happy and would want Dan Duquette fired. If they did decide to trade Machado, where could you see him going? I think the dodgers, he could bring back Holmes + De Leon or Urias plus others.

I hope you’re joking in the last 4yrs O’s are one of most winning AL TEAMS with pretty much the same team as they have now. Trading Machado such a bad idea he is one of the best young players in baseball, and one of very few true 5 tool players. But I do agree that the players he could bring in would be great. So if a long term deal can’t be reached with him and O’s before he is a FA. Then would be the time to entertain this idea. However no prospect is better than a proven 23 yr old MLB star. Honestly I can’t believe you are serious about trading him.
Gogerty
Machado and Yaz to Atlanta for Teheran and Kolby Allard.
BoldyMinnesota
Yep that’ll be enough for baltimore to part with a top 3 third baseman in the entire league
Philliesfan4life
nowhere near enough, I said the dodgers
Gogerty
I know, crazy thought. Apparently have not had enough coffee yet this morning. Would probably throw in another top pitching prospect. Gives them rotation piece now and two top 100 pitchers.
seamaholic 2
I honestly don’t think the Braves possess enough talent to package together for Machado, anywhere. The O’s would have to get multiple major league or near ready impact players.
Maybe if you start with Freeman and Newcomb you start a conversation. But you’d have to add quite a bit more.
niched
O’s wouldn’t want Freeman for Machado. More like Swanson, Blair, Sims, Allard and Toussaint for him.
disgruntledreader 2
Latos’s problem isn’t that he’s “outspoken..” It’s that he’s a six year old trapped in the body of a gifted 28-year-old pitcher. This is a guy who missed a start in the pennant chase because his arm hurt from getting a tattoo on it the night before. The problem with what he says is well upstream of his mouth.
Philliesfan4life
The pirates are the perfect fit for him to go rebuild his value
stymeedone
Is there any pitcher who is not a “perfect fit” for the Pirates?

Projected WAR from Top 5 Starters in AL East (Steamer):
New York: 13.6
Boston: 13.4
Tampa Bay: 11.3
Toronto: 8.6
Baltimore: 7.4
Other than Toronto, who can make up for a shaky rotation behind Stroman with one of the AL’s most potent offenses, Baltimore’s rotation isn’t even close to any other in the AL East. Their offense is projected to be decent, but worse than NY’s and way worse than Boston’s and Toronto’s. Basically, their chances this year look extremely bad with a slightly above average offense and a way below average rotation. They probably need to add two solid starters if they want a chance to compete.
Joe McMahon
**Projected WAR for top 5 starters in respective rotations in AL East
bootstrap
Please stop with projections the O’s win/loss projection the past 4yrs have been in the 70s and yet they’re one of the most winning teams in the AL. Projections are BS.
BoldyMinnesota
Where is 13.6 ranked against the rest of the league? Because none of these teams have a good rotation
Joe McMahon
The Yankees and Red Sox are both top 10 in the game, but neither is elite. The Cubs, Dodgers, Mets, Nationals and Indians, for example, are all projected for between 15 and 19. I do think the Yankees and Red Sox are projected for the second best rotation in the AL, mostly because after Cleveland, there are no great rotations in that division. The Astros and Red Sox are also close.
Philliesfan4life
On paper the indians have the best rotation in the American League, The yankees rotation I am not sold on.
Philliesfan4life
how is that possible that the yankees have the best WAR projected for a rotation in the al east, the rays have the best rotation on paper in that division easily.
Joe McMahon
Steamer is very optimistic about playing time for the Yankees starters. They have elite ceilings and were playing very well last year before all getting hurt. The problem with the Yankees is all their starters are injury prone. I agree with you that Tampa and Boston will probably have better rotations because Pineda, Tanaka and Eovaldi are all injury risks, but if they’re healthy, that rotation is excellent. The top 4 (those 3 and Severino are all projected to be well above average.
eldoog324
They need to sign/trade for a power hitting outfielder and try to out score everyone because there pitching staff sucks. Trade Bundy to Colorado for Carlos Gonzalez.
seamaholic 2
Bundy has zero value. If he had an option left he’d have some value, but he doesn’t. It’s like an unusually talented Rule 5 pick.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
What would Baltimore be willing to part with for Cashner? Obviously not anything amazing, but maybe say 1-2 B level prospects?
Philliesfan4life
Maybe Christian Walker? since they resigned chris davis
bringoutthegimp
The O’s don’t have a strong starting pitching staff? Shocking! If I was a O’s fan I be ready to hang myself. Every off season this is the topic in bird land. Got a hitter ballpark & no pitching. Peter should spend some of that tv money & fix this problem that’s been going on for the last decade. The man is cheap!!!
mrpadre19
Bundy for Cashner……
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Interesting proposal, I know I would consider it.
I also would have considered in the past Jake Arrieta for Volquez
Not sure why DD did not do that, when he had the chance
ln13
Because Scott Feldman was the much better option. Duh.. : – )
seamaholic 2
O’s would have to add, but it’s not a terrible framework if the Padres want to throw the dice.
wheby
Orioles would have to ADD? Casher is a free agent after this year. Bundy hasn’t even hit arbitration yet. Not that the Os would do it anyway, they’ve invested too much in Bundy not to reap their rewards.
bootstrap
No. Glad you’re not in charge Bundy for 1yr of Cashner.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
Doesn’t mean you can’t extend him
bmoregmr
I would like to see the orioles get latos and cahsner. They really need two pieces to have depth. I do think showalter and the orioles clubhouse could keep latos in check and he does have high upside if he is healthy. Bundy will be the longman and hopefully hunter harvey can stay healthy as well
bmoregmr
As far as trading Machado i hope it never happens. He has a chance to be the greatest oriole of all time. The O’s should offer him 10 years 250 million now and lock him up!
Philliesfan4life
He needs to be locked up long term for the O’s , imo Machado and Arenado are the two best defensive third basemen in the league. They would get a big haul back for him though, the dodgers would have the right package.
Philliesfan4life
Thats if Machado will take that offer
Backatitagain
No way Matt Latos can pass a Baltimore physical and… if he does it shows the whole physical ruse is a scam.
stymeedone
Why? What’s wrong with Latos, health wise?
SixFlagsMagicPadres
It depends on if you’re talking about physical health or mental health. Or both.
Strauss
As a white sox fan I’d like to offer John Danks to help the Orioles. We’d like to throw in Ventura and the front office as well. No trade! Just take them!!!
