Major league baseball has determined Rangers’ starter Yu Darvish was not involved in the gambling ring operated by his brother, tweets Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The story broke last week, although at no point in time was Darvish directly implicated. Based on the most recent reports, Darvish remains on pace to return to the Rangers in mid-May.
Here’s more from the western divisions:
- Dodgers’ outfielder Andre Ethier is set to earn 10-and-5 rights in April, writes Steve Dilbeck of the Los Angeles Times. The club has long been rumored to be shopping the outfielder who has two years and $38MM guaranteed on his contract. He could also earn an additional $15MM in 2018 via a vesting option (550 PA in 2017). After a shaky 2014 that saw him relegated to a bench role, Ethier rebounded in 2015 with a .294/.366/.486 line over 445 plate appearances. However, the team used him in a strict platoon. The Dodgers may find it difficult to find a suitor unless they pick up a large portion of his remaining contract. On the plus side, the platoon role almost ensures he won’t trigger his vesting option. Now that Dexter Fowler is the top free agent outfielder on the market, the Dodgers may find it easier to shop Ethier.
- Teams have asked about Angels’ starter C.J. Wilson, tweets Jon Heyman of MLB Network. Per Heyman, clubs view Wilson as a buy-low candidate, but the Angels have yet to receive an acceptable offer. I would add that the team’s starting pitching depth is a bit of a concern. While they have eight starting pitchers on the 40-man roster, names like Matt Shoemaker, Tyler Skaggs, Nick Tropeano, and Andrew Heaney are either coming of a bad season, recovering from injury, or unestablished at the major league level. However, escaping from part of the $20MM owed to him in 2016 could help the club address another position.
- Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton will have his playing time carefully managed in 2016 due to knee inflammation, writes T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com. Hamilton received a cortisone shot on Thursday. GM Jon Daniels described the joint as structurally sound. The aftermath of two surgeries could result in occasional flare-ups like this. Texas has plenty of outfield depth, particularly on the farm where Joey Gallo, Nomar Mazara, Lewis Brinson, and others wait in the wings. Gallo and Mazara are on the 40-man roster.
- Rockies GM Jeff Bridich has downplayed Colorado’s interest in free agent starter Yovani Gallardo, writes Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. In recent days, there have been several reports linking the Rockies with Gallardo as one of three finalists. While Bridich characterized talks as merely “checking in,” Saunders speculates that a signing could still come. At the very least, there appears to be some degree of mutual interest.

No need for Halos to trade Wilson right now. Let’s hope he has a great April and then trade him
seamaholic 2
Yeah, essentially trading Wilson for Dexter Fowler (getting rid of CJ to fit Dexter under the salary cap) would not solve any problems.
kbarr888
Dodgers need to call the Orioles, The White Sox, and the Angels about trading Ethier. He’s not CarGo, but he’ll come a lot cheaper I’d bet. Maybe they could work out a Wilson/Ethier trade…..one bad contract cancels out the other (almost)…..
seamaholic 2
Cheaper in talent return, yeah. Not cheaper in $$. And the Dodgers don’t really have an obvious replacement, I guess unless they sign someone like Fowler. The Van Slyke/Ethier platoon was very effective and I don’t know why they’d break it up. They don’t exactly have a killer left fielder either.
kbarr888
Crawford, Puig, Pederson, Van Slyke, Guerrero, and they could go get a backup like Denorfia, Stubbs, or Jackson for next to nothing……but they’d be transferring Ethier’s salary to the mound, which I would think they should want to do…..
SoCalShu
Crawford shouldn’t be counted for anything due to his proneness to injury.

Ethier for Scoop?
User 4245925809
Scoop Jackson maybe?
RegularEd 2
If you are suggesting the Orioles trade Schoop to the Dodgers for Eithier, you sir are clinically insane.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Bad contracts would mean Crawford for Wilson.
Backatitagain
I can see a trade between the Dodgers and the Braves where Ethier and his $38 Million plus Jose De Leon go to Atlanta and Nick Swisher(15) and Michael Bourn(14) go to the Dodgers with their $29Million. For Dodgers they take 9 mil off the books for 2016/2017 and pay with De Leon.
mumfordzero
It makes no sense for the Dodgers to trade Ethier and one of their top prospects for two aging outfielders.

kbarr888
Braves Fan trying to pawn off their garbage for a productive player……
They might as well keep Ethier…..Swisher & Bourn are not productive any longer. Bad deal for the Dodgers unless the Bravos are picking up 50% of the portion of both of their salaries that aren’t being paid by the Indians (that should amount to less than $10 mil, I think)….even so…..why would they do that??? Look at the slash lines below…..
2015 Stats
Swisher .196/.312/.320/.631
Bourn .238/.310/.282/.592
Ethier .294/.366/.486/.852
Case and Point…….
smitty5953
I’m a Braves fan and that deal would never work unless Teheran was added or something of value
kbarr888
Good call smitty5953…………especially since he included Jose DeLeon……an easy B+ prospect SP with huge upside with a 119/21 K/BB ratio…..and a 94+ fastball…..LOL

Why would the dodgers trade ethier and a top 5 prospect in their system for more extra outfielders andlittle salary relief
mack22 2
What are you Smoken?
mack22 2
The Dodgers would never do something that stupid
brianbigged
Not sure about that. Dee Gordon comes to mind
R.D.
The Dodgers aren’t the Diamondbacks, come on now.
Mark 20
That may be the worst trade proposition ive ever heard on these forums.
OnlyRaysFan
This guy has done worse. This was his exact post: “Nick Swisher for Jose Reyes, Brendan [Rodgers] and Jon Gray; or Jose Reyes, Jon Gray, David Dahl and Ryan McMahon.”
This guy just has no knowledge in the sport.
Cam
Why would the Dodgers dump a top prospect to save $?
This trade idea makes absolutely no sense.
baseball714
lol de leon funny guy
helf35
Wonder if the Dodgers would be interested in doing a Ethier for Danks deal but I imagine the sox would want some cash back as well. He would make a good platoon with Avisail.
Mark 20
What is with these biased trade propositions? Danks is terrible. Why would the dodgers move ethier for him? What possible incentive would there be for the dodgers to do that?
helf35
Salary dump for an expiring contract. $38 mil vs 16.
BlueSkyLA
Contending in 2016 vs. not? Show me a way that trading Ethier puts a larger number in the W column and we might have something to talk about.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
A four mill difference for one year makes no sense they are going to be over the threshold no matter what what is 2 mill? If the threshold jumps to 220 next year the Dodgers have a good chance of still being under.
Mark 20
Last off season I was the only one saying that Ethier wasnt done or washed up and look at the year he had. People always under value this year but hes actually a really solid OF. Sure maybe he had a platoon Adv, but hes a lefty, Hes going to play the majority of the time as more pitchers are right handed. Still had over 400 PAs. If the dodgers ate say, 8M of the total deal I see him being very very valuable on the trade market that has thinned out.
Mark 20
this guy *
shspringer99
I agree. If he has somewhat consistent playing time he can perform. Plus, when he plays right he seems to hit better than he does in center or left.
seth3120
I could see the Dodgers dealing Ethier but they aren’t going to force a deal. Most of what you guys are suggesting is a salary dump or a swap of bad contracts. Ethier is a productive outfielder. They are the Dodgers they aren’t desperately out looking to dump payroll on a guy that can play
BlueSkyLA
Exactly. The Dodgers have reasonable platoon options with Ethier and can afford to keep him in that role unless a more productive situation emerges. A resurgent Puig and healthy Crawford might do it but for now this is just rumor du jour for Ethier.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
In a sense they are motivated to move Ethier due to 10-5, but not forced. To be honest a trade involving Ethier and wood with no impact prospects but lower minor prosp retrieving a givens type would be music to true fans ears. The Os wanted Crawford for a C type prosp last year should have jumped. Hindsight is always 20/20 though.
BlueSkyLA
So by that you mean, the definition of a true fan is to agree with you? Hmm. First you need to ask yourself if 10-5 rights really mean that much, especially in this case. Realistically, would Ethier mess with the Dodgers by vetoing a trade to a team where (unlike LA) he’d play every day? Doubtful. Second, you need ask yourself where the Dodgers get their rotation depth for at least the first half of the season if they trade Wood. A bunch of throw-away minor league spot starters, just like last year, is the answer. Bottom line I agree with you that 10-5 rights should not guide their handling of Ethier, but not on Wood. If everything goes swimmingly with the rotation he could be available in July, but not before, unless they pick up some other decent starters with options.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
It was in reference to some of the trade proposals out there that aren’t realistic. The dodgers are clearly motivated in the aspect that the FO still has the leverage. In a sense you loose that once those kicks in. In no way am I advocating a trade. The question becomes do they think Ryu is healthy and Beachy can contribute. Once Wood gets moved into a swing role and/or minors he lose value. Depth is good but crowdiness w
Philliesfan4life
If I was the angels , I would wait till April to see if Wilson is healthy then trade him to whoever needs a pitcher to eat up innings, maybe the cardinals for example, they still need a pitcher to fill the void of lackey and lynn, already filled one spot with leake.
lamuga326
As much as I would like to see Gallardo resign with the Rangers, it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. I would rather he sign with the Rockies compared to the other possible options.
1976nickjames
I think Ethier would be a good addition to the White Sox. Though the price would be one of the Sox pitching prospects and more for the Dodgers to eat that big contract.
