After two weeks of strong speculation about the possibility of the Rockies trading an outfielder, the club has announced the trade of left fielder Corey Dickerson and third base prospect Kevin Padlo to the Rays in exchange for left-hander Jake McGee and right-handed pitching prospect German Marquez.
The trade accomplishes multiple goals for the Rays, who will add a high-upside young bat in the form of Dickerson and also clear a bit of money from the payroll by shedding McGee’s $4.8MM salary in the deal. That’s not to suggest in any way that this is a salary dump, of course, as McGee has quietly emerged as one of the better left-handed relievers in the game in recent years.
Dickerson, 26, is not yet arbitration eligible and comes with four years of club control remaining. The former eighth-round pick missed most of the 2015 season as he dealt with plantar fasciitis in his left foot and, later, a broken rib, but he should be healthy enough to take regular at-bats for Tampa Bay in 2015. The left-handed hitter is a career .299/.345/.534 hitter with 39 home runs in just 925 big league plate appearances, although those impressive numbers do come with some caveats. For one, Dickerson has crushed right-handed pitching at a .313/.358/.577 clip in his time as a Major Leaguer, but lefties have given him a fair amount of difficulty, limiting to a .246/.299/.377 slash. Beyond that, there’s a nearly 400-point difference between his OPS at the hitter-friendly Coors Field and his mark on the road. Then again, as MLB.com’s Mike Petriello explained back in December, there’s reason to believe that the so-called “Coors Field Effect” is overblown, and Rockies hitters can excel once leaving the team even if they initially possessed gaudy home/road splits. Dickerson’s troubles against lefties, then, could be the greater cause for concern.
Defensively, Dickerson has spent the bulk of his Major League time in left field, though he’s seen 200 innings in center as well. Defensive Runs Saved and Ultimate Zone Rating are down on his work in left, although his worst ratings in the eyes of those metrics came in 2015, when he endured multiple DL stints due to the aforementioned plantar fasciitis. It’s easy to imagine that such a painful condition in one’s left foot could hamper outfield range and lead to considerably diminished contributions with the glove.
From a broader perspective, it’s not entirely clear how Dickerson will fit with the Rays’ roster. Tampa Bay already has a wealth of outfielders, with Desmond Jennings slotted into left field, Kevin Kiermaier in center field and Steven Souza in right field. With Brandon Guyer and Mikie Mahtook as possible reserve options and the yet-formally-announced newcomer Steve Pearce also carrying significant corner outfield experience, the Rays didn’t have a clear need for an outfield upgrade. Then again, positional depth is a trademark of the Rays, and the team is never shy about adding controllable young talent — especially in instances like this, where the cost of acquisition (at least at the big league level) is a player with just two years of club control remaining.
The 29-year-old McGee missed the beginning of the 2015 campaign after undergoing offseason surgery to remove a bone spur from his left elbow. He returned in mid-May, however, and showed no ill effects from the operation, cruising to a 2.41 ERA with outstanding strikeout and walk rates of 11.6 and 1.9 per nine innings pitched, respectively. A partial tear in his left meniscus cost McGee another month later in the season, but he did return at the end of the year to fire 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Over the past four seasons, McGee has been terrific, pitching to a combined 2.58 ERA with 11.4 K/9, 2.3 BB/9 and a 40.9 percent ground-ball rate. He’s exhibited dominance against not only left-handed batters in that time but right-handed opponents as well. In fact, lefties have actually hit McGee harder than opposite-handed opponents, although neither has mustered much in the way of meaningful offense against him.
McGee could enter the season as the favorite to close games in Colorado as right-hander Adam Ottavino recovers from 2015 Tommy John surgery. McGee has saved 25 games across the past two seasons and looked to have cemented himself as Tampa Bay’s primary ninth-inning option prior to last winter’s elbow surgery. (In his early-season absence, righty Brad Boxberger seized the role and never looked back.) The Rockies will have control of him for at least two seasons, although the possibility of course exists that Colorado will flip him either in July if the team is not contending or perhaps next offseason, when he gets another bump in his $4.8MM salary via arbitration and is only one year removed from free agency.
The Rockies have long been expected to trade an outfielder — in spite of the front office’s suggestion that a deal wasn’t a necessity — due to their own surplus of left-handed-hitting outfielders that was created upon signing Gerardo Parra to a three-year deal. In Dickerson, Parra, Charlie Blackmon and Carlos Gonzalez, the Rockies were carrying four somewhat redundant assets, with each of the three incumbent options representing an appealing option to clubs in search of a bat. Given Colorado’s own need for pitching, a trade certainly seemed plausible, even if, as GM Jeff Bridich said on several occasions, a deal was far from a given.
Turning to the prospects in the deal, Padlo was a fifth-round selection by the Rockies in the 2014 draft. Selected out of high school, Padlo hit .257/.372/.447 across two Class-A levels in 2015 and has amassed a composite batting line of .271/.388/.494 with 19 homers and 41 stolen bases early in his pro career. Baseball America rated Padlo 14th among Rockies farmhands last offseason, noting that he had “impressive power” for a high school player in the draft but has a thick lower half and can get flat-footed at third base, so he’ll need to work on his agility and be conscious about his weight.
Marquez, who was on the Rays’ 40-man roster, rated 25th among Tampa Bay farmhands, according to MLB.com’s most recent prospect rankings (a new version of the list will be out soon, as will Baseball America’s full Top 30). The 20-year-old Venezuelan right-hander that spent last season pitching at Class-A Advanced, where he worked to a 3.56 ERA with 6.7 K/9 against 1.9 BB/9 in 139 innings. MLB.com notes that Marquez has been consistently challenged by facing older competition — he was three years younger than the league average this past season, for instance — and has succeeded despite being one of the younger players in each league in which he’s pitched. Marquez offers a low- to mid-90s fastbal with the makings of an average or better curveball and a changeup that’s still a work in progress. His control has improved with each season in the minors as well.
Nonetheless, it’s somewhat surprising, in my eyes, that the Rockies felt comfortable parting with four years of Dickerson for two years of a reliever, however excellent he may be, and one mid-level pitching prospect. Colorado, of course, may see considerably more in Marquez than others in the industry, and they may also have had concerns about Dickerson’s diminished plate discipline and increased strikeout rate.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports first reported that Dickerson was going to the Rays in a trade (Twitter link). Joel Sherman of the New York Post added that McGee would go to Colorado, and prospects were also involved (Twitter link). Rosenthal further tweeted some additional details on the structure of the deal, and Jon Heyman reported that Marquez was going back to the Rays as well (on Twitter). Rosenthal later tweeted that Padlo was the fourth player in the trade.

Hopefully not Snell
seamaholic 2
Ha! As a Rockies fan I would do a victory dance …. ain’t gonna happen.
Slipknot37
I’m going to keep refreshing this just to see who the pitchers are. Pretty awesome
Philliesfan4life
I wonder who the rays had to give up, hopefully not cobb or snell
seamaholic 2
Those two are not in the same category. Snell is untouchable I would think. The fact that “multiple pitchers” are involved suggests no one of Snell’s level will be.
baronbeard
I doubt either of them, especially Snell. Not worth him.
HalosFan
I love how we get a notification on “rays and Rockies discussing trade” 5 mins before the trade is announced. Happened with most moves this offseason.
Deelron
Fangraphs had an article on the 26th discussing the rumors about said trade.
A'sfaninUK
There also have been a few that took all day to finish. We still don’t know the other pitcher in this deal yet, could make or break the deal for either team.
Eric D.
Dickerson is so underrated. I have the Rays winning the division this year, and this trade just enforces that.
KingSall77
Pretty bold of you to say that “I have the Rays winning the division” I don’t think there’s anyway they beat out Boston or New York.
stormie
Boston or New York? And the Blue Jays are what, minced meat? They only led baseball in runs and run differential by a wide margin last year and are arguably even better now.
A'sfaninUK
They lost arguably the best pitcher in baseball, they are 100% not “arguably better” you homer.
stormie
Clearly your opinion of what is arguable or not isn’t worth anything. They lost 11 starts and 2.4 WAR of 100% not “arguably the best pitcher in baseball”, and will replace it with 30 starts from Stroman (who had 1.3 WAR in 4 starts), a full season of Tulo (who had 1.4 WAR in 40 games as a Jay to Reyes’ 0.6 WAR in 70 games, and Tulo wasn’t even hitting), Happ over Buehrle (another 2.1 WAR gain), and Storen in the pen. Try and tell me how that’s 100% not even arguable that their team stands to be better in 2016 than in 2015.
therealryan
The Blue Jays are good, but there is significant risk with this team. The offensive core is all 30+ and the starting rotation is a promising prospect and 4 back end starters. If the offense stays healthy and fights off Father Time for another year, as well as, several SPs have career years, they can win the division. A few injuries creep up and guys like Happ and Estrada pitch like Happ and Estrada and they could easily be sitting in 4th place.
therealryan
Don’t forget on August 1st last year the Jays were 53-52 and sitting in 3rd place in the division.
kylelohse
No way Snell is part of the deal…gotta think that the Rays made them take Loney as part of the deal to send a higher end pitcher. I’m guessing either Odorizzi, Moore, or Smyly will be involved.
baronbeard
Nothing from the Rays beat writer yet. So holding my breath. Probably McGee and a low level pitching prospect if it goes through. I’d say no way Snell, Guerreri, or Honeywell.
seamaholic 2
If it’s really low level, the Rockies don’t do that. McGee has very little value to them and I would guess they’d immediately flip him.
baronbeard
That’s the issue that I have with this trade. The Rays don’t have much need for Dickerson either. The outfield is packed, first base is covered, and their 40 man is full.
ammiel
Totally agree. Why wouldn’t the Rays keep McGee who stands as at least their setup man if they plan on contending this season?
baronbeard
My thought, maybe Andriese.
Rbase
Probably Erasmo Ramirez + a reliever. I can’t see a higher caliber pitcher as the headline here (unless the Rockies add other good pieces).
seamaholic 2
Corey Dickerson is very VERY good.
Rbase
I don’t think he is a top 10 left fielder at this point (MLB network disagrees). He is not a good defensive left fielder and his career slash line away from Coors field is .249/.286/.410, which is below average for an outfielder. He’ll have something to prove in his first year.
seamaholic 2
No chance. Dickerson is one of best young hitters in the game.
ethanhickey
Erasmo is not a minor leaguer
Rbase
I gave (/started to write) this comment just 1 minute before word came out that McGee was the main piece going to Colorado. I thought the Rays would rather trade a starter since they have some prospect depth there..
Eric D.
The Rays are my choice to win the division this year and now they finally have some offense to get it done
MB923
I’m not so sure of that
Corey Dickerson Coors Field stats – .355/.410/.675/1.085
Corey Dickerson Away stats – .249/..286/.410/.695
wRC+ at Coors – 165
wRC+ Away – 89
I think we can safely say he’s a product of Coors Field.
Thanksfully he’s going to be playing most road games in hitter friendly ballparks. Nonetheless, his home games will be in one of the very few AL pitcher friendly parks.
MB923
And I will say I still think it’s a good trade for Tampa.
Thomas W
Counter point this argument is at least 5 years old, some of us posted back then as well.

A'sfaninUK
That’s the most ridiculously cherry picked bunch of stats I’ve ever seen. Get out of town with this. I don’t know where to start, maybe with Matt Holliday might be a borderline HOFer if he pulls out a couple more elite offensive seasons and Dickerson’s been a regular for a single season.
MB923
Matt Holliday is one of the very few Rockies exceptions , not the rule.
A'sfaninUK
Steamer has Dickerson at 1.5 fWAR in 121 games next year, he’s being wildly overrated in this comments section. He has a career .695 OPS away from Coors and he’s played 265 games so far, so it’s a not really a small sample scale with him either. He is not good defensively, at all. UZR hates him. He’s a decent hitter though so the Rays can always sub in Souza or Jennings to replace him in the late innings. That’s a solid 4-man OF they got there, if used properly.
Steve Adams
There’s been quite a bit of research done on the negative impact Coors Field has on the road production of hitters who play in Denver regularly, and there are examples of previous players with dramatic home/road splits as a Rockie going on to have quality offensive seasons away from Denver. (Dexter Fowler stands out as one recent example.) .
265 games is still a reasonably small sample, especially when you’re looking at an even more fragmented sample of defensive metrics, a large portion of which were impacted by an injury (plantar fasciitis) that would clearly be detrimental to a player’s outfield range.
I’m a big proponent of sabermetrics and using as many means of info as you can when evaluating a player, but you can’t just look at 600 innings of defensive metrics and check out someone’s Steamer projection and close the book on them.
A'sfaninUK
I’m not saying Dickerson is a terrible player, but he’s not underrated. He is what he is: a guy who’s going to hit 20+ HR with league average D if he’s healthy. I like him as a rotating guy with the 5 OF the Rays have with Jennings, Souza, Guyer and Kiermaier.
I think Fowler is better than Dickerson by quite a bit too.
I’m not closing the book on anyone, but for 2016, i’ll stick with steamer and what we’ve seen already. You are right in that his foot injury might have effected him, but I’m not sure that will make that much difference in that I just don’t think Dickerson’s that great to begin with: 8th rounder who put up inflated numbers in the PCL isn’t that impressive to me. I still think the Rays won the trade because they got a guy who can play a position everyday and Padlo for 2 years of McGee and a low level minor leaguer.
beyou02215
Man, where were the Indians on Dickerson? I hope they at least inquired.
Rally Weimaraner
Rockies make strange trades. Unless they plan on acquiring an entire starting rotation to go along with McGee they are still going to stink in 2016 in 2017 and then McGee will be gone
seamaholic 2
They’re gonna flip him.
hanks1hammer
The Rockies aren’t competing. They’re rebuilding. A reasonably young, effective relief pitcher is a cheap investment to pick up prospects come the trade deadline
looney4baseball
here’s an idea. Why didn’t they just get prospects for Dickerson instead of a lesser valuable player they can try to flip at the deadline?
ammiel
4.8 Million is a cheap reliever? there is loads of cheaper available that could be as useful to a rebuilding team.
Gogerty
Damn, was so hoping Braves would make a play.
Brixton
After the return that Giles/KImbrel brought, the Rockies should flip McGee right away.
Ray Ray
The problem is that if anyone was going to give a huge package for him, then wouldn’t the Rays have traded him there?
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
I think it was the Rays asking price. They wanted young MLB hitters. Most teams unwillingness to give up those guys or those guys were too much a part of their plan. So they both traded from strength. Now the Rockies can trade for a package that involves those prospects most might be more inclined to trade.
beyou02215
Taylor G. I bet. Also, I was really hoping the Indians would make a play for Dickerson.
baronbeard
Doubt it. McGee is a pretty good get, probably lower rung, but still good.
ourgiants25
Unless the Rockies get a serviceable pitcher this deal doesn’t make much sense. The Rockies are one of the teams that has little chance if any to contend in MLB so they don’t need a closer.
Slipknot37
Yes, but they wanted a bullpen pitcher. Looks like they got one
ourgiants25
It’s official. This looks like a really bad deal. Maybe the Rockies FO is looking ahead to the trade deadline and thinking they have a premium trade piece? The Rockies won’t have any leads to hold so keeping Mcgee would be bizarre. The Rockies are likely more than two years from contention, so if they don’t trade Mcgee he will leave as a free agent after his time is up. Looks like a bad deal.
praeceps93
Unless this is Honeywell/Snell, the Rockies just got fleeced hard. Dickerson has his downsides, but he’s worth more than McGee.
triberulz
If the Rockies are going to turn around & trade McGee I hope the Indians get involved. McGee’s contract is affordable & the Rockies could send cash & get 2 quality pitching prospects. Indians are in dire need of LH relief help.
smelliott00
I definitely see the Rockies flipping McGee. Not much use for a closer when you can’t get to the 6th inning with a lead. Also, this is interesting because it essentially eliminates a Cubs-Rays trade, at least involving Soler, which has been coming up in rumors because Fowler is still on the board. The shedding of McGee’s salary might also help the Rays to sign Ian Desmond *wink wink*.
triberulz
The Rays will trade with the Cubs for Baez only now. I think they’ll go that route if Desmond signs elsewhere. I got a feeling the Rays will make an offer to Desmond soon. I bet after this trade the Rays will be at 38 players on the 40 man. One spot cleared for Pearce, the other hoping on Desmond.
Otownpr
No chance the Rays will give up the draft pick for a year rental.
triberulz
The Rays could add a year to the deal. Desmond is definitely worth giving up a draft pick, power RH SS w/speed and capable of stealing bases. His defense was better in the 2nd half last season. Desmond’ s off year was probably due to pressing in a contract year. His track record is very strong .
Voice of Reason
You giving up snell for Baez? The Rays aren’t trading archer and we don’t need another #3 starter which is what odorizzi is.
The Cubs are better off keeping Baez unless the Rays want to trade snell.
egrossen
do you mean baez for dickerson? That makes no sense for the Cubs. They have Schwarber in LF, Heyward in CF, Soler in RF, and Chris Coghlan as a 4th OF.
smelliott00
I could see the Cubs and Rays still matching up on a deal involving Baez, but this eliminates Soler to Tampa rumors, which was interesting because of the Cubs and Dexter Fowler circling back towards one another. I would only think the Cubs sign Fowler if they deal Soler. They want and should to have the 3 guys of the future playing full time.
Ray Ray
Have you even watched a Rockies game in the past few years? They get into the 6th inning with a lead quite often and the bullpen promptly blows the lead. You can learn a lot about baseball by actually watching the games too.
jtt11 2
The rox pen was atrociously bad.
Otownpr
No way the Rays will give up the draft pick for a year rental. Desmond will not be a Ray!
Niekro
I understand trading an OF but why trade your youngest OF as a team that should be rebuilding?
Niekro
His value was probably the lowest of the 3 too
ammiel
Really leads to the question of why did the rockies sign Gerardo Parra in the first place, Blackmon, Dickerson and Gonzalez are not the root of any problems in Colorado. They should have paid overs and signed a Kennedy or Fister.
Billy Leager
I would say that Parra as an offensive player is around Dickerson’s level, but as a defensive player Parra is miles better. I would take the combination of Parra and McGee over just Dickerson any day of the week.
ammiel
Why sign Parra in the first place? The rockies need pitching!
Voice of Reason
If you’re going to trade Dickerson to the Rays, then get a couple of top prospects for him.
Teams like the Rockies, that will be bad in 2016, don’t need a solid closer.
seamaholic 2
They can trade McGee, and likely will if they’re as bad as they should be.
Out of place Met fan
Having a solid bullpen goes a long way to improving a team. It is not something that is typically successfully rebuilt in one off-season. Having a stable pen can allow the team to bring along young starters without undue stress (2015 Rays?)
Looking at the Rockies off-season it appears that it was one area they felt they could make significant improvements. They haven’t been very successful luring high end starters either due to the environment or because they haven’t tried since Hampton and Naegle.
dro03
As a white sox fan, this is bs. All it took was a reliever and a prospect? Why not an adams + any of the relievers minus Robertson or back end starter then sign one. He would have been perfect even considering Cargo, Cespedes (long term), and possibly Upton. Not sure what’s going on at the Cell.
kenster84
because it’s Kenny Williams
SupremeZeus
Because they are probably signing Austin Jackson or rolling with Avi Gracia (barf) and upgrading at the deadline if they are in the race (there will be lots of deadline deals this season w/ the poor FA class next season). The White Sox can get Austin Jackson for money alone, my guess is Jackson to the sox and Fowler back to the cubs.
Tko11
Crazy to think that Garcia was at one point not too long ago one of the best Tigers prospects.. I even recall some saying he was untouchable in trades.
rayrayner
Yes, I remember Avi being called “Baby Cabrera” when he played in the postseason for the Tigers.
kiermaier
whitesoxs dont have a good reliever thats the problem or much trde bait
beyou02215
Same can be said of the Indians. Dickerson would have been a perfect fit for them but, instead, they seem content to roll with the likes of R. Davis and Napoli.
Priggs89
Ew. I’d much rather keep Adams. Dickerson is bad outside of Coors. Not impressed.
AndThisGameBelongsToMySanDiegoPadres
So probably Honeywell?
Ray Ray
I am okay with this deal, depending on the minor league pitcher quality. Despite the common perception, the Rockies bullpen and not the rotation, has been their Achilles heel for the past few seasons. They have 9-10 candidates for the rotation, but when Jason Motte is your best bullpen arm, you really need help. If they can sign Yovani Gallardo, they might be sneaky good in the tough NL West.
slogar1
“2:52pm: Rosenthal tweets that the Rockies will be sending McGee and a minor league pitcher to the Rockies”……Colorado is sending 2 players to themself?
foc44
This makes no sense to me. Dickerson has much more value than McGee. The prospect must be decent or else the White Sox and Angels will be looking dumb for not offerring more.
baronbeard
Doesn’t seem to be anyone of clear value to the Rays. Something must of matched up well with the two.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Defensively and On the road splits tell the story of the value. With .249 avg .280 obp with only 15 hr compared to 24 hr at home while playing more games on the road. We’ve seen what top of the line pitching brings. So essentially if they wanted they could get much more out of a McGee trade wise than they could have out of Dickerson. The Rockies are going to hit that’s just what they are going to do. Flipping McGee could bring more arms in. Add that to CarGo at the trade value and the rebuilding of arms is on.
foc44
I can see this as a move to flip McGee for prospects that fit a rebuilding scheme. However, with Dickerson, there is more than one way to look at him. An alternative view is of an OF hitting his prime and under control for 4 years at a low price. The splits are bad, but rational arguments have been made as to Denver’s negative effect on road performance at the plate.
So maybe there is some logic on the side of the Rox. But given what is left in the market I would have thought at least 4 teams would be attempting to outbid each other for Dickerson.
kiermaier
its not a top 10 prospect you werent going to get snell or honeywell anyways rockies fans
The Oregonian
I know McGee’s a good reliever, but why trade Dickerson for him? It’s like the Rockies think they were a bullpen piece away from competing this year. Great add for the Rays, he’s the middle of the order bat they needed.
The Oregonian

dtwb93
Considering what I bet the salary dumping Rays did. Cobb is definitely going. Saved the Cards from over paying for Cargo as they can pick him up when the Rockies are 20 games out at trade deadline.
Mark 20
I dont buy into the concept of “a product of coors field”. Sure it can skew Homerun totals, but as far as Batting average, and OBP go, it doesnt really factor in too much. You dont have the numbers Dickerson does if youre not a good hitter, no matter where you hit.
therealryan
I have a hard time seeing Dickerson as more than a lefty hitting platoon, poor defensive LF. Had one ok season and one bad, injury plagued season. How much value is in that player really? He looks very similar to Matt Adams who is always overrated by Cardinal fans, but doesn’t do much to impress others. Rock fans, tell me why I’m wrong.
Mark 20
a Bad injury plagued season? He hit 10 home runs and hit over .300 in only 61 games… Thats hardly bad. The year before he had 24 bombs, hit over .300 once again and had an OPS of .931. Im not a rockies fan but even at Coors, thats impressive. Hes also 26.
mehcky
Per Rosenthal…German Marquez going to Rox
MLB4LIFE
Chalk a win up for the Rays.Colorado could have recieved more elswhere you would think.
Cam
How very Rockies. Trading four years of a solid young Outfielder, for two years of a reliever.
When they won’t compete for two years plus.
Actually, it’ll probably be a long time.
What on earth does a reliever bring to a team that’s going nowhere?
22222pete
Good trade bait at the deadline should get them a decent prospect or 2 since you get more at the deadline than in the offseason. Dickerson will be expensive in 2 years in his late arb years and he is wasted for the next 2 years. since the teams going nowhere with him or without him
Cam
Picking up someone with the intent to sit on him and flip him later is an extremely flawed strategy. Two years of Jake McGee would be of value to a team that has any use for an above average reliever – the Rockies don’t have use for it.
Anyone can eat innings while they try and rebuild their shambles of a franchise.
You said “Dickerson will be expensive in 2 years in his late arb years and he is wasted for the next 2 years”.. Well, not only is Jake McGee wasted for the next two years as well, he’s also a free agent in two years. How on earth is he any better for the Rockies?
Now, they have less control over a player playing a position of lesser value.
The Oregonian
I bet he gets flipped to the Dodgers for a couple pieces in their stockpile of prospects. The Dodgers probably couldn’t deal with the Rays directly because the Rays wanted a controllable, high-upside bat, but the Rockies want young pitching, which LA can spare.
BlueSkyLA
I’m always wondering about the concept of upside. Does Dickerson need to be better than he is already for this to be a good trade for the Rays?
ammiel
Why McGee tho, dont the Rays need bullpen depth to compete!
kiermaier
rays have a deep bullpen actully
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
That’s what I was thinking. It wouldn’t be a typical in division trade with just two years left although it still is going to be a big price. This is a great move for Colorado. They get an interesting young arm, while also the ability to spin McGee for more.
SemihAutomatic
Well, to be fair, if it weren’t a last place team making that swap, we may be applauding them – with the cost of great relievers suddenly skyrocketing, the Rockies just got one of the best in the game the last four years (save for a relatively rough 2013) in McGee for a guy who may very well be a Coors Field mirage without any defensive or baserunning value to make up for a potential loss of offense. Now I don’t think Dickerson is just gonna fall off the map but McGee isn’t a bad haul at all….
Until you factor in the talent of the team McGee will be closing for. Then, it makes no sense at all – unless they flip him down the line for a package better than Dickerson alone.
Cam
Precisely. If this were a team that actually had a need for a reliever, sure, it makes sense.
But they have precisely zero need for a reliever. They literally swapped four years of an outfielder, for two years of a reliever, when they have no use for a reliever.
Regardless of whether people rate Dickerson is not – I’m on the fence with regards to his potential outside of Coors – it doesn’t really add up. It can’t even be called a lateral move.
Brentus07
As a Rays fan, this makes me very happy.
cmb1974
Tampa trying to stay in it good trade for them.
parks
what the hell are you doing colorado
at least get a top-ish prospect, for godsake
triberulz
So the final deal is Tampa Bay receives OF Corey Dickerson, & no. 14 prospect 3B Kevin Padlo. While Colorado gets closer LHP Jake McGee, & no. 25 prospect German Marquez. Looking at it the Rockies are definitely going to flip Mcgee. Great deal for the Rays.
gorav114
IMO Colorado could not get the return for Dickerson they wanted and spring training is right around the corner. Now the plan is bring in a closer so if they are in contention they have one which they need more than an extra outfielder. If they are out of it flip him to a contender around the deadline for a young controllable pitcher when a team is more likely to give one up for a piece they feel is needed to get to the WS.

Why did the Rockies trade Dickerson and Padlo (who I wasn’t familiar with, but he actually looks decently promising) for a, albeit good, reliever in McGee. Angels could’ve definitely used dickerson 🙁
AndreB
“And should be back to hit in 2015.” Uhhh

On the other hand… Tampa has made some sneaky good moves getting Corey Dickerson, Brad Miller, and Hank Conger. I imagine all 3 will contribute a lot to the 2016 Rays
A'sfaninUK
Ok wow Padlo? The Rays won this trade for now, but the Rockies can still pull it out if they flip McGee for a bounty in this market that overvalues relievers. McGee makes a lot of contenders bullpens bulletproof.
therealryan
If there was a bounty waiting in the market for McGee, why wouldn’t have the Rays made that trade?
csiebert5
Because they wanted a proven major league bat, rather than prospects
A'sfaninUK
I don’t know, I don’t run the Rays. I would hope they looked around for a better prospect package or a better OF than Dickerson though.
jleusn
I don’t know why you all are ruling out a possible Rays/Cubs deal with Soler. They just made it easier on themselves now. Rays trade Kiermaier and Odorizzi to Cubs for Soler (add in a prospect here or there for either team). Jennings moves to CF, Dickerson in LF, Soler in RF. Pierce is the 4th OF. Its a perfect match: Rays don’t lose depth and Cubs get their #4 starter and their leadoff man/CF.
brickhaus
How on god’s green earth would you expect the Rays to trade Keirmaier for Soler straight up, much less throwing in Odorizzi? Keirmaier was a 5+ WAR player last year. Not to mention Jennings will be perennially injured as long as he plays half his games on turf.
Priggs89
Hahaha. Want anything else while you’re at it? Kiermaier is already much more valuable than Soler, and you want them to add in a high end #3. That’s absolutely ridiculous.
therealryan
Maybe the Cubs throw in a prospect, like Bryant, to help even out the trade.
A'sfaninUK
Are you a Cubs fan? No way do the Rays make that trade. I thought you were going to be sensible for a second and say Baez for Odorizzi straight up, which makes sense, but then you went and added Keirmaier for no reason at all. Please don’t do that.
Valkyrie
I’m not sure Baez for Odorizzi makes sense for the Rays. They have enough guys who can strike out at a 30+% rate.
sigurd 2
That sounds a little light. How about the Rays throw in Chris Archer also?
kiermaier
odorizzi isnt even close to a number 4 he is a 2
Valkyrie
This is quite possibly the single dumbest Homer the Junior GM trade scenario I’ve ever seen.
A Platinum Glove CF with 5 years of team control and a decent if not spectacular bat.
A 25 YO starter who won 9 games on a sub-500 team with a 3.35 ERA and 150 Ks in 169 innnings who OBTW has 4 years of team control.
For
An injury prone, questionable at best RF who strikes out 1 of every 3 ABs and who is burdened with a contract the Cubs were dumb enough to give him for next 5 years and $21M.
In what twilight zone other than your head does this make sense for the Rays?
Soler for either one of the two Rays players straight up would be a huge stretch. For both of them? Its so laughable as to be pathetic.
therealryan
I won’t say it’s impossible, but why not do a 3-way trade then? Like last season when the Rays wanted an MLB ready bat and worked a 3-team trade with the Nats and Padres so they could get that MLB ready bat in Souza.
brickhaus
This is flat out silly. So let for Odorizzi straight up would be a stretch, but throwing in a guy with 5 years of service time left who was a 5 WAR player last year just makes it ridiculous.
I do still think there’s a potential match between the Rays and Cubs where the Cubs get Jennings and perhaps Cobb. But it would no longer involve the Rays getting Soler, Baez or Contreras. Jennings for someone like Vogelbach straight up might still make sense. The Rays get salary relief and a local kid who might be able to DH at some point, and the Cubs get someone who can backup all three outfield positions. The Rays can’t really use Jennings – the turf is killing his knees; and the Cubs can’t really use Vogelbach – they already heave enough terrible defenders and there’s no DH in the NL. Seems like a ein-win to me.
Valkyrie
Why even discuss the Cubs? This isn’t about them.
Yet another typical Cubs Fan Trade Scenario: Here, you take this piece we don’t want anymore but we tell you is valuable and you give us riches beyond our wildest dreams in return. Why? So you can have the honor of dealing with the Cubs. Why else? LOL
michaelw
You can’t do a 3 way trade w the Padres n Nashionals cause no one wants to play for Wash. Except that 38 year old minor league pitcher lmao
bringoutthegimp
WOW! Somebody’s got a hard on for my Nationals! Hater gotta Hate! Spellcheck Please!!!
inigomontoya
Got to*
inigomontoya
Offense was looking pretty weak, but with Pearce and Dickerson the Rays actually have the looks of a decent offensive team. They may not be the 2010 Rays, but this team should definitely have a chance to compete for the division in 2016.
mryan2
I’ve been a Dickerson fan. If you’re a Rays fan you have to like this. We will see how much he benefited from Colorado. But with his years of control this could become an excellent move for them.
