The Padres’ search for a shortstop is nearing the finish line, general manager A.J. Preller confirmed to Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “We’ve gotten to a spot where we’ve looked at a lot of options,” Preller told Lin. “Things could come to a head in the next few days to a week.” While Preller didn’t specify any names, sources tell Lin that free agents Alexei Ramirez and Ian Desmond can be considered the favorites to fill San Diego’s shortstop vacancy.
The Padres have been connected to both free agents quite a bit of late, though the two would represent very different types of options. The 30-year-old Desmond figures to command a lengthier multi-year deal, whereas Ramirez could potentially be looked at as more of a stopgap to top prospect Javier Guerra, who was acquired from the Red Sox alongside three other minor leaguers in exchange for Craig Kimbrel. Because Desmond turned down a qualifying offer, he’d cost the Padres their top unprotected draft pick, while the veteran Ramirez could be had for only money.
Lin reported last week why the 30-year-old Desmond is appealing to Preller for reasons beyond just his strong track record from 2012-14 (his 2015 season, of course, was a difficult one). The GM also explained to Lin at that time why the presence of Guerra wouldn’t stop him from adding a shortstop on a multi-year deal, noting that a team can’t have too much up-the-middle talent. It’s also worth noting, of course, that there’s been speculation about Desmond changing positions this offseason. If and when Guerra emerges as a potential everyday option (which probably won’t happen until at least 2017), Desmond could conceivably more to another spot on the diamond.
A dismal first half in 2015 left Desmond with an unsightly .223/.290/.384 batting line last year, but the powerful infielder still hit 19 homers and chipped in 13 stolen bases. Additionally, he looked more like himself after the All-Star break, hitting .262/.331/.446 with a dozen homers and eight stolen bases in the season’s second half. And, while Desmond’s defensive lapses drew a lot of headlines early on when he made eight errors in the first 12 games of the season, he settled down and played considerably better defense for the remainder of the year. Of course, Desmond’s rapidly escalating strikeout rate (29 percent in 2015) is a cause for concern, and even his solid second half was buoyed to some extent by a BABIP spike, as he continued to whiff at a prolific rate (30.3 percent in the second half).
Ramirez has his own positive and negative attributes, of course. While he’s been a largely durable asset for the White Sox over the life of his big league career, showing both power and speed at times, he, too, fell victim to a woeful first half in 2015 when he batted just .224/.249/.292. Given the fact that he’s 34 years of age, the Padres probably have to be more wary of a potential decline for Ramirez. However, he batted a much more characteristic .277/.325/.432 with eight homers and seven steals following the All-Star break, and as previously noted, will presumably come at a cheaper cost not only in terms of overall dollars, but also in length of commitment and by the virtue of being unencumbered by draft pick compensation.
Whichever route the Padres go, it figures to be an upgrade over a 2015 campaign that saw Clint Barmes, Alexi Amarista, Will Middlebrooks and Jedd Gyorko combine to log a .228/.279/.365 while providing, on the whole, sub-par defense.

Would be a HUGE mistake to aquire Desmond, with little protection in SD would lead the league in Ks

Couldn’t agree more, not to mention losing the compensation pick by signing him as well. Padres need to take advantage of having 6 picks in the top 100 of this years draft. Sign Ramirez or Rollins to a two year deal to bridge the gap to when Guerra or Rondon are ready.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Yeah I think between the two of them, Ramirez is the better option.

It’s not like their going to the postseason next year. It would be smartest to sign Ramirez for a year or two.

Also, this talk about Fernando Rodney potentially signing with the padres? Please, give me a break. As sorry as it sounds I’d rather give Quackenbush a shot. I don’t know why they insist on keeping Cashner in the starting rotation, he goes 5 innings and fizzle’s out of every game, he should be considered to close games. He also has that gritty, rare back and light up the radar gun mentality. Wish they would test that out IMO.

This is one of the smartest things I have heard about the Padres this offseason. As a huge fan, I would hate to see Fernando Rodney in the Padres uniform. I say transition Cashner to closer or give Brandon Maurer or Quackenbush a shot. Not really a fan of a Desmond signing, would prefer to see them trade for Javier Baez, but that would require a Tyson Ross trade. I’d be fine with Ramirez for a year or two till Guerra is ready.

Good to see another friar faithful on here speaking logically. The 3 guys you mentioned.. Cashner, Maurer and Quack, they are the only guys we have with closer stuff and potential and they are all under very cost effective contracts so wasn’t that the plan all along by trading Kimbrel and Benoit? signing Rodney would totally go against that. Reminds me of when we signed Valverde last spring, made no sense. I was hoping with Prellers background and time in Texas that we would be able to sign Feliz or Ogando for cheap and allow them to compete for the closers role but they signed a couple weeks ago with Pittsburgh and Atlanta respectively. At this point, I have no idea what the plan is for the 9th not to mention the rest of the pen.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
I like this idea too. It would be really cool to see Cashner in a closer role, where he really has the potential to thrive. Every game I went to last year in which he was pitching, he would always run out of gas after 5 innings, give or take. Giving him a shot at being the closer would be much better than signing someone like Rodney (ugh).
Then again, if they were to do that, who would take his place in the rotation?
bleacherbum
They Padres posted an article a few days ago saying that Maurer was going to compete for a spot in the rotation, so that could be who takes his spot and depending on what they want to do with Pomeranz will have a say as well. You are spot on about Cashner, I’m a season ticket holder and watch or listen to all the road games and he just doesn’t have to stamina to consistently get passed the 6th on a consistent basis. My projected rotation/ bullpen as the team is currently constructed would look pretty close to this:
1. Shields
2. Ross
3. Morrow
4. Maurer
5. Pomeranz/Perdomo (rule 5 pick up)
7 bullpen spots:
Despanigne/Perdomo
Baumann (signed to major league deal, no experience above AAA)
Vargas ( same as Baumann)
Vincent
Quackenbush
1 of the 2 other rule 5 picks:
Josh Martin or Blake Smith.

^With Cashner being the closer at the bottom of this list based off what we’d like to see. It sure would be nice to see him rare back and blow guys away with 100mph and that mullet flying around in the wind haha

For Maurer I have the same thoughts as I do for Cashner. He tried being a starter in Seattle and struggled and has had two dominant seasons in the bullpen. He would get tired after 5 or 6 innings whereas him as a reliever he was throwing 97-99 last year with filthy stuff. Use a Quack, Maurer and Cash as a 7-8-9 dominant bullpen. Also put Pomeranz in the pen mix. The best teams are built on great bullpens so the Padres should try and put their top assets there. Let’s also not forget about Robbie Erlin who had a few decent starts last September and was once a top prospect in the organization as a 5 starter. I’d like to see them sign someone like Doug Fister or Cliff Lee on a 1 year deal to help them reestablish their value after pitching at Petco for a year.
bleacherbum
Solid points. I like it, a lot. I think fister makes more since or even a reunion with Latos just because of age and the ability to sign a multi year contact somewhere else if they do have a bounce back year. I think Lee, wants to go somewhere where he will not only be the number 4-5 starter but also competing for a championship and I just don’t see the fit in San Diego with him. It would be nice to see Erlin given a full year to see what he can do, I wouldn’t mind a trade to bring in one more lefty as well. Maybe a veteran with a year or two left on his deal coming off a bad year that could benefit with a little tweaking of mechanics or style with Darren Balsley, maybe John Danks or Hector Santiago. I’m sure they could be had for mid level prospects or even for a guy like spangenberg or jankowski.
gersh 2
I agree on the part with Cliff Lee, I just want to see him as a Padre because I’m a big fan. I don’t see the Angels trading away Santiago unless they’re getting a big bat like one of the Rockie’s outfielders, Santiago was an all-star last year. John Danks could make some sense, but he is expensive.
bleacherbum
It’s hard not to be a fan of cliff lee, guy is a gamer and true pro. You’re right about Santiago, I thought he made the all-star team but all the trade rumors and chatter made me second guess myself and wonder why they would want to cut bait with him now. I think Danks makes sense because he has the bad contract, because we have a few on our roster as well.. If we were able to do a bad contract for bad contract deal but get a solid left handed veteran starter out of it I’m all for it. Maybe Melvin Upton and a prospect, or if we really want to clear some money we could send Kemp over there if they can’t sign Cespedes or Justin Upton. Either way Shields, Kemp and Upton Jr are commanding a lot of our payroll and I’d have to imagine that one of those 3 guys we will try to move if not before then after spring training concludes.
SixFlagsMagicPadres
Yes, if they were to go this route of making Cashner the closer, they would more than likely need to sign someone on a cheap deal to give the rotation some depth. Morriw has injury concerns, and I think Erlin does too ( I believe he had elbow trouble last year, or it could have been the year before).
Either way, it would be interesting to see the Padres do something like this. They could have a pretty dominate bullpen if it would all work out.
bleacherbum
I forgot to mention Colin Rea as well as one of the rotation options. But we would 100 percent need to add another established big league arm if we were to move Cashner to 9th inning duties. I think Preller still has another trade or two up his sleeve this offseason but we are just forced to be patient which is hard after what he did last year that had us all fired up. Hopefully news drops soon about the shortstop search so we can have a little more clarity what the team is trying to do.
beyou02215
Please don’t be Desmond at 4+ years and a ton of money (relatively speaking). 2 years? Sure. 3? On the cheap, sure. But no more than that.
